Stability in Perceived Control

Objective: Our purpose was to examine how stability/variability in perceptions of control (PC) relate to a variety of health-related variables. Design: PC stability/variability across multiple domains was assessed in a longitudinal design including 318 adults, 72 to 99 years of age. Method: PC and health-related measures were obtained during in-person interviews conducted approximately 3 months apart. PC variability was assessed in relation to self-reported health outcomes (perceived health, chronic health conditions, functional status) and objective measures of physician visits and hospitalizations recorded over a 4-year period in a highly reliable and comprehensive database. Results: PC variability was associated with poorer health, poorer functional status, and more physician visits and hospital admissions, even after statistically controlling for mean PC level and direction-of-change in PC. Implications: Our findings suggest that health and well-being among very old individuals may be compromised by fluctuating levels of PC, or conversely, that stability in PC enhances health.

Managing threats against control in old age: a narrative inquiry

BACKGROUND

The desire to retain personal control over self and life circumstances continues into old age; it exists in tension with late-life vulnerabilities.

OBJECTIVES

This article investigates how older adults respond to threats against control in light of changes surrounding health and identity.

METHODS

Community-dwelling African American (n = 10) and European-American older adults (n = 10), aged 70 years and older, with varied self-reported health statuses were qualitatively interviewed. Open-ended interviews explored older adults' perceptions of control and threats to control in older age.

RESULTS

Three themes linked older adults' responses to threats to control. Older adults (a) proactively monitored physical and mental health, (b) maintained roles that shaped important aspects of identity, and (c) fostered personal growth and development by generative practices. Responses of participants who had difficulty countering threats to control are also offered.

DISCUSSION

This study shows that the construct of control is not abstract; it is interpreted and applied by older adults in the contexts of everyday life. Respondents used personal resources honed throughout the life course to respond to threats to control. Older adults viewed control as a cultural construct with nuanced meanings that recalled past roles and current changes that occur with age. Suggestions are offered for how health professionals can assist older adults with the cognitive and emotional tasks required to deal with threats to personal control surrounding health and identity.

Influence of culture and age on control beliefs: the missing link of interdependence

A number of studies have found that primary control declines in old age and is lower in Asian countries, while secondary control increases in old age and is higher in Asian countries. We examined whether these patterns may be due to the mediating influence of interdependence. In a sample of 557 young and old adults in Japan and the United States, primary and secondary control, age, and interdependence were measured. We found that interdependence mediates the influence of: (1) culture on secondary control; and (2) age on both primary and secondary control. Findings suggest that interdependence is an important factor that should be considered in trying to understand the determinants of control cross-culturally and developmentally.

Secondary control reviewed and defined

Conclusions about secondary control have been hindered by researchers' disparate interpretations of the construct. The current review offers a definition that reflects commonality among researchers and the spirit of the original article (F. Rothbaum, J. R. Weisz, & S. S. Snyder, 1982): Secondary control refers to the process by which people adjust some aspect of the self and accept circumstances as they are. The authors also identify a "fit versus control" dimension, along which secondary control research can be classified and reviewed. The authors conclude that fit-focused secondary control is adaptive for coping, is relatively preferred in interdependent cultural contexts, and may serve the motivation for relatedness. Control-focused definitions lead to different interpretations of the function and cultural nature of secondary control. The proposed definition and dimension should enable researchers to articulate assumptions about the function and correlates of secondary control.
