Preliminary epidemiological and clinical observations on Shimao Zheng (fleece-eating) in goats and sheep

Trichophytobezoar duodenal obstruction in New World camelids

OBJECTIVE

To describe clinical findings, surgical treatment, and outcome associated with trichophytobezoar duodenal obstruction in New World camelids.

STUDY DESIGN

Retrospective study.

ANIMALS

Alpacas (7) and 1 llama.

METHODS

Historical and clinical data were obtained from the medical records of New World camelids with a diagnosis of trichophytobezoar duodenal obstruction confirmed by surgical exploration or necropsy.

RESULTS

Seven camelids were <1 year old. Abnormal clinical findings included anorexia, reduced fecal output, recumbency, colic, abdominal distension, regurgitation, decreased serum chloride concentration, increased serum bicarbonate concentration, and/or elevated first gastric compartment chloride concentration. Survey abdominal radiographs obtained (4 animals) revealed gastric distension (4) and/or visualization of the obstruction (2). Diagnosis was confirmed at necropsy (1) or surgery (7). Right paracostal celiotomy was performed on all animals and duodenotomy (3) or retropulsion of the trichophytobezoar combined with third compartment gastrotomy (4) was used to remove the obstruction. Six animals survived to discharge and 5 were healthy at follow-up, 8-20 months later. The remaining discharged alpaca was healthy at 12 months but subsequently died of unrelated causes.

CONCLUSIONS

Diagnosis of trichophytobezoar duodenal obstruction should be considered in juvenile New World camelids with abdominal distension and hypochloremic metabolic alkalosis. Right paracostal celiotomy can be used for access to the descending duodenum and third gastric compartment for surgical relief of obstruction.

CLINICAL RELEVANCE

Duodenal obstruction from bezoars should be considered in New World camelids <1year of age with abdominal distension and hypochloremic metabolic alkalosis. Surgical relief of the obstruction by right paracostal celiotomy has a good prognosis.

An experimental study on the treatment and prevention of shimao zheng (fleece-eating) in sheep and goats in the Haizi area of Akesai county in China

A series of experimental trials on methods of treatment and prevention of shimao zheng (fleece-eating) were carried out using various sulphates. The results confirmed the hypothesis that this is a local nutritional and metabolic disease, caused mainly by a sulphur deficiency, that could be prevented or cured with supplementary sulphur in the diet. In field studies, the clinical signs virtually disappeared within 14 days of the animals receiving medicated pellets. Over the same period, the concentrations of sulphur in the blood, liver and spleen returned to normal and the pathological changes in the skin improved. The condition of the controls became worse in each of these respects over this time. However, the pathological changes in the musculature were not allevated by the treatment.

Studies on the pathogenesis of shimao zheng (fleece-eating) in sheep and goats

Research on the disease called shimao zheng, which had resulted in widespread fleece-eating and shedding by sheep and goats in the Haizi area of Akesa County of Gansu Province of China, was carried out by both laboratory studies and pathological observations. There was a marked deficiency of sulfur in the wool and tissues of the affected animals. The pathological changes were mainly loss of fleece, exposure of the skin, keratinization of the epidermal cells, narrowing and reduced numbers of the fleece follicles, and fewer sebaceous glands and sweat glands. Histologically, there was atrophy of the striated and cardiac muscles and of the epithelium of the convoluted tubules of the kidney, together with a glomerulonephritis. The disease was considered to be a local nutritional and metabolic disorder, probably mainly caused by sulfur deficiency.
