Cosmogenic 7Be: Particle size distribution and chemical composition of 7Be-carrying aerosols in the atmosphere in Japan

The particle size distributions of airborne aerosols with ⁷Be were measured using cascade impactors at Dazaifu, a city in western Japan, in 2018 to observe their seasonal variation. Beryllium-7 was found to be adsorbed to aerosols with a particle size of less than 2.1 μm; in general, particles sized 0.43-0.65 μm had the highest ⁷Be activity concentrations. The activity median aerodynamic diameter (AMAD) of ⁷Be fluctuated less over the year within the range of 0.40-0.52 μm, which is the size range of particles that can reach human alveoli, and had an annual mean of 0.43 ± 0.034 μm. The activity concentrations of ⁷Be were significantly lower in summer, which affected ⁷Be activity concentration for each particle size fraction. The particle size distribution of ⁷Be-carrying aerosols was also affected by that of the aerosol particles in the atmosphere. Finally, findings suggest that ⁷Be was mainly adsorbed to sulfate aerosols (particularly ammonium sulfate aerosols).

The Fourier analysis applied to the relationship between (7)Be activity in the Serbian atmosphere and meteorological parameters

Air sample monitoring in Serbia, Belgrade started in the 1960s, while (7)Be activity in air and total (dry and wet) deposition has been monitored for the last 22 years by the Environment and Radiation Protection Department of the Institute for Nuclear Sciences, Vinca. Using this data collection, the changes of the (7)Be activity in the air and the total (wet and dry) deposition samples, as well as their correlation with meteorological parameters (temperature, pressure, cloudiness, sunshine duration, precipitation and humidity) that affect (7)Be concentration in the atmosphere, were mathematically described using the Fourier analysis. Fourier analysis confirmed the expected; the frequency with the largest intensity in the harmonic spectra of the (7)Be activity corresponds to a period of 1 year, the same as the largest intensity frequency in Fourier series of meteorological parameters. To analyze the quality of the results produced by the Fourier analysis, we compared the measured values of the parameters with the values calculated according to the Fourier series. Absolute deviations between measured and predicted mean monthly values are in range from 0.02 mBq/m(3) to 0.7 mBq/m(3) for (7)Be activity in air, and 0.01 Bq/m(2) and 0.6 Bq/m(2) for (7)Be activity in deposition samples. Relatively good agreement of measured and predicted results offers the possibility of prediction of the (7)Be activity.

Spatial and temporal variability of (7)Be and (210)Pb wet deposition during four successive monsoon storms in a catchment of northern Laos

Fallout radionuclides (7)Be and (210)Pb have been identified as potentially relevant temporal tracers for studying soil particles dynamics (surface vs. subsurface sources contribution; remobilization of in-channel sediment) during erosive events in river catchments. An increasing number of studies compared (7)Be: (210)Pb activity ratio in rainwater and sediment to estimate percentages of freshly eroded particles. However, the lack of data regarding the spatial and temporal variability of radionuclide wet deposition during individual storms has been identified as one of the main gaps in these estimates. In order to determine these key parameters, rainwater samples were collected at three stations during four storms that occurred at the beginning of the monsoon (June 2013) in the Houay Xon mountainous catchment in northern Laos. Rainwater (7)Be and (210)Pb activities measured using very low background hyperpure Germanium detectors ranged from 0.05 to 1.72 Bq L(-1) and 0.02 to 0.26 Bq L(-1), respectively. Water δ(18)O were determined on the same samples. Total rainfall amount of the four sampled storms ranged from 4.8 to 26.4 mm (51 mm in total) at the time-fractionated collection point. Corresponding cumulative (7)Be and (210)Pb wet depositions during the sampling period were 17.6 and 2.9 Bq m(-2), respectively. The (7)Be: (210)Pb activity ratio varied (1) in space from 6 to 9 for daily deposition and (2) in time from 3 to 12 for samples successively collected. Intra-event evolution of rainwater (7)Be and (210)Pb activities as well as δ(18)O highlighted the progressive depletion of local infra-cloud atmosphere radionuclide stock with time (washout), which remains consistent with a Raleigh-type distillation process for water vapour. Intra-storm ratio increasing with time showed the increasing contribution of rainout scavenging. Implications of such variability for soil particle labelling and erosion studies are briefly discussed and recommendations are formulated for the collection of rainwater signature in studies based on the (7)Be: (210)Pb ratio method, especially in tropical areas under high erosive pressure.

Cosmogenic 22Na, 7Be and terrestrial 137Cs, 40K radionuclides in ground level air samples collected weekly in Kraków (Poland) over years 2003-2006

A low background gamma spectrometer with an Etruscan, 2500 years old lead shield and a muon veto detector were applied to study ²²Na and ⁷Be activity concentration in ground level air aerosol samples collected weekly over the years 2003–2006 in Kraków. Each sample was formed with ca 100 000 m³ of passed air, collected with two parallel ASS-500 high volume air samplers. The results for ⁴⁰K and ¹³⁷Cs are also presented for reference and comparison. Presented frequency distributions for activity concentration and correlation between the obtained results are discussed. The activity concentration results confirmed seasonal variation of activity to be different for all the investigated radionuclides. Moreover, the seasonal variation in nucleus activity ratio was also noticed for ²²Na and ⁷Be. Cosmogenic radionuclides being mainly of stratospheric origin, are subsequently attached to fine aerosols, via which they are transported to the ground level air. The mean aerosol transport time within the troposphere was estimated as equal to 7.5 days on average, reaching even 50 days in warm seasons. Limitations of the applied model were identified.

High activity concentrations of (210)Pb and (7)Be in sediments and their histories

High activity concentrations of (210)Pb and (7)Be, in addition to (137)Cs, were found in a rooftop deposit in Japan. This deposit had activities of about 5 Bq/g from (210)Pb and 3.6 Bq/g from (7)Be, an order of magnitude greater than typically found in field soils and lake and sea bottom sediments. It is clear that under certain conditions aerosol particles can accumulate in deposits with little or no mixing and dilution by silicate materials, and that subsequent processes and factors result in a heterogeneous distribution pattern of activity concentration on the Earth's surface. A simple model suggests that the history of an environmental sample can be estimated by using the activities of (210)Pb and (7)Be.

Seasonal and spatial variation of atmospheric 210Pb and 7Be deposition: features of the Japan Sea side of Japan

Monthly depositional fluxes of (210)Pb and (7)Be at Tatsunokuchi, Japan which faces the Japan Sea were studied over a 12-year period from 1991 to 2002. The data were compared with the spatial variability of these fluxes at Taejon in Korea and at 11 other sites in Japan from Ishigaki of the southern islands of Okinawa to Wakkanai of the northern end of Hokkaido over a 2-year period from 2000 to 2001. The monthly depositions of both (210)Pb and (7)Be at Tatsunokuchi revealed very similar seasonal variations with a single peak; both depositions were high in winter and low in summer. This phenomenon was found to be not transient but stationary. The deposition of these nuclides was much greater on the Japan Sea side of Japan than on the Pacific Ocean side. The cause for high deposition of (210)Pb and (7)Be in winter might be explained by a combination of a series of the following processes: blowing out of air masses with a high (210)Pb concentration near the surface layer over the continent by strong winter monsoons, additional flow of cold air masses with high (7)Be concentration at high latitude, well-mixing with generation of ascending current and convection clouds over the Japan Sea, and heavy snowfalls accompanying them.
