Extinction Times in Multitype Markov Branching Processes

In this paper, a distributional approximation to the time to extinction in a subcritical continuous-time Markov branching process is derived. A limit theorem for this distribution is established and the error in the approximation is quantified. The accuracy of the approximation is illustrated in an epidemiological example. Since Markov branching processes serve as approximations to nonlinear epidemic processes in the initial and final stages, our results can also be used to describe the time to extinction for such processes.

Tetrathyridiosis in a domestic shorthair cat

CASE SUMMARY

This report describes the clinical and parasitological findings in a domestic shorthair cat with isolated thoracic tetrathyridiosis. The cat was a stray from Malta that had lived in Germany for several years since as an indoor-only cat. Therefore, the process of infection remains very unusual. In this case it must be considered that the cat had been infected years previously while in Malta, and had lived at least 4 years without any clinical signs. It was possible to diagnose this uncommon disease and initiate an effective treatment with fenbendazole, praziquantel and supportive care. Clinical signs, as well as radiographic findings, were regressive with this treatment.

RELEVANCE AND NOVEL INFORMATION

Tetrathyridiosis is a rare finding in cats, especially in Germany, but it seems to be a potential differential diagnosis of pleural effusion. Mesocestoides corti, which was the causative parasite in this case, has not previously been isolated in Germany. Because tetrathyridiosis is only diagnosed post mortem in most cases, little is known about effective therapeutic options. Furthermore, clinical signs of this disease can be absent for several years and can potentially be triggered by neoplastic conditions or immunosuppression. Tetrathyridiosis seems to be a treatable disease that can be controlled by adequate antiparasitic therapy.

The role of culture media on embryonation and subsequent infectivity of Capillaria obsignata eggs

This study investigated whether infectivity of Capillaria obsignata eggs depends on media culture used for embryonation. Intact female worms were kept in one of following four media: 0.5 % formalin, 2 % formalin, 0.1 % potassium dichromate and 0.1 N sulfuric acid. Embryonation rates of the eggs were quantified either daily in intact females for 16 days, or weekly in disrupted females. Infectivity of the embryonated eggs was tested through an experimental infection of chickens with a single dose of 250 eggs/ bird. The vast majority of the eggs (>82 %) in the first two thirds of the uteri was able to complete embryonation, irrespective of the culture media used for incubation. However, only 32.6 % of total eggs could be harvested after disruption of the intact females. Embryonation rates of the eggs from disrupted worms were different among four culture media, with 0.1 N sulfuric acid resulting in the highest embryonation rate (44.2 %). All the experimentally infected birds harboured mature worms, with varying establishment rates depending on the culture media (P < 0.001). Incubation of the eggs in potassium dichromate 0.1 % resulted in a lower (P < 0.001) establishment rate (10.2 %) when compared with formalin (70.5 and 47.9 % for concentrations at 0.5 and 2 %, respectively) or with 0.1 N sulfuric acid (57.5 %). It can be concluded that most of the eggs in first two thirds of the uteri in the intact females have the potential to complete embryonation without being influenced by the culture media. However, disruption of the intact females results in lower number of harvestable embryonated eggs, with a considerable variation due to culture media used. With the exception of 0.1 % potassium dichromate, any of the three media, particularly 0.1 N sulfuric acid, can be suggested for embryonation of C. obsignata eggs.

Comparative genetics and genomics of nematodes: genome structure, development, and lifestyle

Nematodes are found in virtually all habitats on earth. Many of them are parasites of plants and animals, including humans. The free-living nematode, Caenorhabditis elegans, is one of the genetically best-studied model organisms and was the first metazoan whose genome was fully sequenced. In recent years, the draft genome sequences of another six nematodes representing four of the five major clades of nematodes were published. Compared to mammalian genomes, all these genomes are very small. Nevertheless, they contain almost the same number of genes as the human genome. Nematodes are therefore a very attractive system for comparative genetic and genomic studies, with C. elegans as an excellent baseline. Here, we review the efforts that were made to extend genetic analysis to nematodes other than C. elegans, and we compare the seven available nematode genomes. One of the most striking findings is the unexpectedly high incidence of gene acquisition through horizontal gene transfer (HGT).
