[The contribution of Open Science to the quality of educational research]

The starting point of this paper are the discussions of the robustness of empirical findings in related disciplines, namely social psychology, which culminated in the so-called "replication crisis". These discussions about replication and "questionable research practices" have only started to reach the educational sciences. At the same time, parts of the educational sciences are prone to the same problems as related disciplines. Therefore, it may only be a matter of time before these controversies also arise in the educational sciences. Against this backdrop, we argue how Open Science can contribute to increasing the robustness of educational sciences' findings. In particular, we suggest three Open Science practices: Pre-registration, Open Materials and Open Data. We present these practices and examine how researchers can implement these Open Science practices in the educational sciences. We discuss the specific conditions of the educational sciences in comparison to related disciplines and address the limitations and particularities of the educational sciences. We conclude with a plea for transparency.

Investigating Dynamic Visualizations of Multiple Representations Using Mobile Video Analysis in Physics Lessons

This contribution presents the results of a replication study on the learning effect of tablet-supported video analysis compared to traditional teaching sequences using non-digital experimental materials in the subject areas of uniform and accelerated motion in high school physics lessons. In addition to the replication of the preliminary study results recently published in this journal (Becker et al 2018, 2019), the investigation of the effect on the cognitive load as well as the emotional state of the students is another focal point. Compared to the preliminary study, the sample size was significantly increased from $$N=109$$ N = 109 to $$N=294$$ N = 294 . The individual effects of the preliminary study could be replicated in this way. For both topics, a significant reduction of extraneous cognitive load and a positive effect on intervention-induced emotions could be demonstrated. Moreover, the theoretically founded causal relationship between emotion, cognitive load, and learning achievement could be empirically verified by means of structural equation modeling.

Effekt Glückssache?

Zusammenfassung. Damisch, Stoberock und Mussweiler (2010) zeigten in einer Reihe von Experimenten, dass die Induktion von abergläubigen Glücksüberzeugungen im Vergleich zu einer Kontrollgruppe zu einer besseren Leistung in unterschiedlichen kognitiven und motorischen Aufgaben führt. Wir führten zwei konzeptuelle Replikationen ( N Studie 1 = 101, N Studie 2 = 175) eines der Experimente durch, in denen wir untersuchten, ob Versuchspersonen in einer Online-Studie durch die Induktion Glück zu haben, bessere Leistungen beim Lösen von Anagrammaufgaben zeigten als die Kontrollgruppe und untersuchten dabei in Studie 2 mit einem anderen Manipulationsstimulus zusätzlich den Effekt von Pechinduktion auf die Leistung. Des Weiteren wurde in beiden Studien der Effekt der Induktion auf die Selbstwirksamkeitserwartung untersucht. Den Hypothesen widersprechend zeigte sich kein statistisch signifikanter Effekt der Glücks- bzw. Pechinduktion auf die Leistung. Auf die Selbstwirksamkeitserwartung zeigte sich nur in Studie 2 ein kleiner Effekt. Zu geringe Teststärke und nicht erfolgreiche Manipulation können in beiden Studien als Ursache für die erfolglose Replikation ausgeschlossen werden. Wir diskutieren, dass Effekte von Glücks-Induktionen auf Leistung offensichtlich nur unter sehr spezifischen, oft nicht replizierbaren Randbedingungen gezeigt werden können.
