Coping of Young Refugees in Germany

Abstract. Background: Coping is considered to have an important influence on well-being, especially in adolescent refugees dealing with a high amount of stress. In addition, gender differences in coping are a common topic for research and are often attributed to differences in socialization between boys and girls. Aims: The study aims at clarifying the gender differences in coping strategies used by non-Western adolescents. Additionally, associations with aspects of socialization, in particular Gender Role Attitudes (GRA), on gender differences are investigated. Method: Refugees from Syria, Iraq, and Afghanistan ( N = 106, 55% male) aged 11–18 years completed questionnaires in schools or housing facilities. Associations between gender, GRA, coping strategies, and well-being were investigated using moderation and regression analyses. Results: Gender differences found in previous literature could, in part be replicated. Refugee girls reported more anger-related emotion regulation than boys did. However, GRA did not show any connections to coping strategies. Limitations: Most limitations result from low reliabilities and possible biases due to the use of self-reports. Conclusion: The more frequent use of anger-related emotion regulation as the only gender difference replicated in this study highlights the importance of research with refugee samples to prevent over-generalization of previous results from Western cultures.

Self-Rated Mentalizing Mediates the Relationship Between Stress and Coping in a Non-Clinical Sample

BACKGROUND

The clinical concept of mentalizing has recently been extended into non-clinical contexts. In particular, the protective function of robust mentalizing as a processing capacity of interpersonal and intrapsychic events has become a focus of consideration. Theoretical approaches hypothesize that mentalizing may allow for an adequate self-awareness in the face of aversive experiences such as stress, leading to a reappraisal of these experiences and therefore enables the use of adaptive coping behaviors.

OBJECTIVE

The study aimed to investigate the association between coping behavior, mentalizing and experiences of stress.

METHOD

534 healthy adults completed the German-language Stress Processing Questionnaire (SVF), the Mentalization Questionnaire (MZQ), and a short scale of the Trierer Inventory of Chronic Stress (TICS) in a cross-sectional research design.

RESULTS

Correlational analyses suggested associations between coping and mentalizing. Furthermore, MZQ scores predicted both positive and negative coping behavior. The relationship between stress and both negative and positive coping was mediated by mentalizing capacity.

CONCLUSION

Findings confirm the hypothesis that mentalizing may represent a coping resource within a resilience framework. An implementation of the concept in preventive mental health interventions is discussed.

Zur Bedeutung funktionaler und dysfunktionaler Emotionsregulations- strategien für die depressive Symptomatik bei Jugendlichen

Zusammenfassung. Fragestellung: Dysfunktionale und funktionale Emotionsregulationsstrategien im Jugendalter wurden bislang häufig separat, jedoch kaum in ihrer Wechselwirkung erforscht. Ziel ist es, eine mögliche Kompensation von dysfunktionalen Regulationsstrategien durch funktionale Strategien bei depressiven Symptomen zu analysieren. Methodik: Mittels des Regulation of Emotions Questionnaire (REQ) wurde bei N = 247 Jugendlichen im Alter von 12 bis 17 Jahren (MW = 14.41; SD = 1.39) die Fähigkeit zur Emotionsregulation erhoben. Die depressive Symptomatik wurde mit der Allgemeinen Depressionsskala (ADS) bestimmt. Ergebnisse: Die Befunde sprechen für eine Kompensation internal-dysfunktionaler Emotionsregulationsstrategien durch internal-funktionale Emotionsregulationsstrategien bei Mädchen. Bei den Jungen hingegen verstärken funktionale Emotionsregulationsstrategien den Zusammenhang zwischen internal-dysfunktionalen Emotionsregulationsstrategien und depressiver Symptomatik; andere Strategien interagieren nicht miteinander. Schlussfolgerungen: Bei Mädchen weisen die Ergebnisse auf einen Kompensationseffekt hin, während bei Jungen die funktionale Emotionsregulation einen Verstärkereffekt auf depressive Symptome zu haben scheint. Es kann vermutet werden, dass Jungen funktionale Strategien in dysfunktionaler Weise nutzen, während Mädchen diese angemessen einsetzen können. Eine Exploration des Verständnisses funktionaler Strategien kann Ansatzpunkte für die Behandlung eröffnen.

Daily Stress, Hearing-Specific Stress and Coping: Self-reports from Deaf or Hard of Hearing Children and Children With Auditory Processing Disorder

This study evaluated stressors and coping strategies in 70 children who are deaf or hard of hearing (D/HH) or with auditory processing disorder (APD) attending Grades 5 and 6 of a school for deaf and hard-of-hearing children. Everyday general stressors and more hearing-specific stressors were examined in a hearing-specific modified stress and coping questionnaire. Reports were compared with normative data for hearing children. Regarding everyday general stressors, stress levels for children who are D/HH or with APD did not differ from those of hearing children. Within children with hearing problems, everyday stressors were experienced as more stressful than hearing-specific stressors. For coping strategies, differences between children with hearing problems (D/HH, APD) and hearing children were shown (i.e., problem solving, anger-related emotion regulation). Girls scored higher in seeking social support whereas boys reported higher amounts of media use as a way of coping. Differences regarding stress and coping between children who are D/HH and children with APD were minor; D/HH children reported more social support seeking. Implications for assessment and resource promotion are discussed.

Geschlechtstypische Unterschiede und geschlechtstypische Erwartungen beim Einsatz von Bewältigungsstrategien und ihre Zusammenhänge zum Problemverhalten von Jugendlichen

Zusammenfassung. In dieser Studie geht es um geschlechtstypische Unterschiede bei der Nutzung von Bewältigungsstrategien in der frühen Adoleszenz. Neben den Angaben zur Nutzung der Strategien wird zusätzlich berücksichtigt, in welchem Ausmaß Geschlechtsunterschiede von den Jugendlichen erwartet werden. Die Angaben zur Nutzung von Bewältigungsstrategien sowie das Ausmaß der Geschlechtsrollenkonformität der Erwartungen werden zu Anpassungsproblemen in Bezug gesetzt. An der Studie nahmen 260 Jugendliche mit einem Durchschnittsalter von 13.7 Jahren (SD = 1.9) teil. Die Ergebnisse zeigen, dass nur bei wenigen Bewältigungsstrategien Geschlechtsunterschiede hinsichtlich ihrer Nutzung bestehen, während bei wesentlich mehr Bewältigungsstrategien Nutzungsunterschiede erwartet werden. Vor allem als maladaptiv klassifizierte Bewältigungsstrategien stehen in beiden Geschlechtsgruppen mit erhöhten emotionalen und verhaltensbezogenen Anpassungsproblemen im Zusammenhang. Als adaptiv klassifizierte Bewältigungsstrategien sind weiterhin bei Jungen mit geringeren emotionalen Problemen assoziiert. Bei Mädchen finden sich weiterhin Bezüge zur Suche nach sozialer Unterstützung. Es zeigt sich weiterhin, dass mit geschlechtsrollenkonformen Erwartungen zum Einsatz von Bewältigungsstrategien eine weitere Varianzaufklärung bei Anpassungsproblemen erreicht werden kann. Dies gilt jedoch nur für Mädchen und kann möglicherweise durch die Wirkung von Geschlechtsrollenstereotypen erklärt werden, die sich sowohl auf die Angaben zu den Bewältigungsstrategien als auch auf die Angaben zu Anpassungsproblemen auswirken und dadurch gemeinsame Varianz erzeugen.
