Performance and Microbial Community Analysis of an Electrobiofilm Reactor Enhanced by Ferrous-EDTA

The biological reduction of ferrous ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA-Fe^II-NO and EDTA-Fe^III) is an important process in the integrated electrobiofilm reduction method, and it has been regarded as a promising alternative method for removing NO _x from industrial boiler flue gas. EDTA-Fe^II-NO and EDTA-Fe^III are crucial substrates that should be biologically reduced at a high rate. However, they inhibit the reduction processes of one another when these two substrates are presented together, which might limit further promotion of the integrated method. In this study, an integrated electrobiofilm reduction system with high reduction rates of EDTA-Fe^II-NO and EDTA-Fe^III was developed. The dynamic changes of microbial communities in the electrobiofilms were mainly investigated to analyze the changes during the reduction of these two substrates under different conditions. The results showed that compared to the conventional chemical absorption-biological reduction system, the reduction system exhibited better performance in terms of resistance to substrate shock loading and high microbial diversities. High-throughput sequencing analysis showed that Alicycliphilus, Enterobacteriaceae, and Raoultella were the dominant genera (>25% each) during the process of EDTA-Fe^II-NO reduction. Chryseobacterium had the ability to endure the shock loading of EDTA-Fe^III, and the relative abundance of Chryseobacterium under abnormal operation conditions was up to 30.82%. Ochrobactrum was the main bacteria for reducing nitrate by electrons and the relative abundance still exhibited 16.11% under shock loading. Furthermore, higher microbial diversity and stable reactor operation were achieved when the concentrations of EDTA-Fe^II-NO and EDTA-Fe^III approached the same value (9 mmol·L^-1).

A Biophysicochemical Model for NO Removal by the Chemical Absorption-Biological Reduction Integrated Process

The chemical absorption-biological reduction (CABR) integrated process is regarded as a promising technology for NOx removal from flue gas. To advance the scale-up of the CABR process, a mathematic model based on mass transfer with reaction in the gas, liquid, and biofilm was developed to simulate and predict the NOx removal by the CABR system in a biotrickling filter. The developed model was validated by the experimental results and subsequently was used to predict the system performance under different operating conditions, such as NO and O2 concentration and gas and liquid flow rate. NO distribution in the gas phase along the biotrickling filter was also modeled and predicted. On the basis of the modeling results, the liquid flow rate and total iron concentration were optimized to achieve >90% NO removal efficiency. Furthermore, sensitivity analysis of the model revealed that the performance of the CABR process was controlled by the bioreduction activity of Fe(III)EDTA. This work will provide the guideline for the design and operation of the CABR process in the industrial application.

Tales of volcanoes and El-Nino southern oscillations with the oxygen isotope anomaly of sulfate aerosol

The ability of sulfate aerosols to reflect solar radiation and simultaneously act as cloud condensation nuclei renders them central players in the global climate system. The oxidation of S(IV) compounds and their transport as stable S(VI) in the Earth's system are intricately linked to planetary scale processes, and precise characterization of the overall process requires a detailed understanding of the linkage between climate dynamics and the chemistry leading to the product sulfate. This paper reports a high-resolution, 22-y (1980-2002) record of the oxygen-triple isotopic composition of sulfate (SO4) aerosols retrieved from a snow pit at the South Pole. Observed variation in the O-isotopic anomaly of SO4 aerosol is linked to the ozone variation in the tropical upper troposphere/lower stratosphere via the Ozone El-Niño Southern Oscillations (ENSO) Index (OEI). Higher (17)O values (3.3‰, 4.5‰, and 4.2‰) were observed during the three largest ENSO events of the past 2 decades. Volcanic events inject significant quantities of SO4 aerosol into the stratosphere, which are known to affect ENSO strength by modulating stratospheric ozone levels (OEI = 6 and (17)O = 3.3‰, OEI = 11 and (17)O = 4.5‰) and normal oxidative pathways. Our high-resolution data indicated that (17)O of sulfate aerosols can record extreme phases of naturally occurring climate cycles, such as ENSOs, which couple variations in the ozone levels in the atmosphere and the hydrosphere via temperature driven changes in relative humidity levels. A longer term, higher resolution oxygen-triple isotope analysis of sulfate aerosols from ice cores, encompassing more ENSO periods, is required to reconstruct paleo-ENSO events and paleotropical ozone variations.

Determination of the temperature and pressure dependence of the reaction OH + C2H4from 200–400 K using experimental and master equation analyses

The pressure and temperature dependence for the reaction of OH + C(2)H(4) was studied over the range of conditions: 200-400 K and 5-600 Torr by laser flash photolysis, laser-induced fluorescence (FP-LIF). Additional experiments were conducted at room temperature by laser flash photolysis, cavity ring-down spectroscopy to facilitate determination of the high pressure limit. One-dimensional master equation calculations were conducted to test the temperature and pressure dependence of the reaction in He and in N(2). The energetics of the reaction and geometries of intermediate species were calculated by ab initio calculations (DFT-BH&HLYP/6-311+G(3df,2p) and CBS-APNO level along DFT-IRC, respectively. An investigation into the importance of a pre-reaction van der Waals complex on the kinetics over the pressure range of the troposphere is discussed. The high pressure rate coefficient was extracted by fitting the master equation calculations to the data and yields k(infinity) = 5.01 x 10(-12) exp(148/T) cm(3) molecule(-1) s(-1). The master equation calculations were then optimized for the pressure fall-off in He and N(2) by varying the average downward energy transfer parameter (DeltaE(down)) for the different collision partners and finally fitted to a Troe expression to determine k(o) and F(cent) for use in atmospheric modeling.
