Characteristics of Lightning Electromagnetic Fields Produced by Antarctica Storms

This paper presents the temporal characteristics of electromagnetic fields produced by cloud-to-ground (CG) lightning flashes associated with Antarctica storms. A total of 51 positive CG (+CG) and 103 negative CG (−CG) flashes have been recorded by a magnetic direction finder (MDF) sensor in King Sejong Station, King George Island. In total, 47 positive and 107 negative return strokes were located, ranges from 32 to 569 km. All CG flashes were detected to occur over the ocean. The return strokes characteristics include the observations of slow front, fast rising, rise time, and pulse duration with geometric mean values of 3.2, 0.53, 3.21, 13.12, and 67.09 µs for +CG flashes, while 3.9, 0.57, 3.72, 20.75, and 69.86 µs for −CG flashes, respectively. Additionally, the average peak currents of +CG and −CG flashes were 4.13 kA and 3.14 kA, respectively. The temporal characteristics of the return strokes of Antarctica storms are comparable to other geographical regions. The smaller peak currents might be due to small magnitude of Antarctica cloud charges when compared to other geographical regions.

Trends in Atmospheric Humidity and Temperature above Dome C, Antarctica Evaluated from Observations and Reanalyses

The time evolution of humidity and temperature above Dome C (Antarctica) has been investigated by considering data from (1) meteorological radiosondes (2005–2017), (2) the microwave radiometer HAMSTRAD (2012–2017), (3) four modern meteorological reanalyses (1980–2017) and (4) the southern annular mode (SAM) index (1980–2017). From these observations (2005–2017), a significant moistening trend (0.08 ± 0.06 kg m−2 dec−1) is associated with a significant warming trend (1.08 ± 0.55 K dec−1) in summer. Conversely, a significant drying trend of −0.04 ± 0.03 kg m−2 dec−1 (−0.05 ± 0.03 kg m−2 dec−1) is associated with a significant cooling trend of −2.4 ± 1.2 K dec−1 (−5.1 ± 2.0 K dec−1) in autumn (winter), with no significant trends in the spring. We demonstrate that 1) the trends identified in the radiosondes (2005–2017) are also present in the reanalyses and 2) the multidecadal variability of integrated water vapor and near-surface temperature (1980–2017) is strongly influenced by variability in the SAM index for all seasons but spring. Our study suggests that the decadal trends observed in humidity and near-surface temperature at Dome C (2005–2017) reflect the multidecadal variability of the atmosphere, and are not indicative of long-term trends that may be related to global climate change.

Seasonal Analysis of Cloud-To-Ground Lightning Flash Activity in the Western Antarctica

This paper presents a seasonal analysis of cloud-to-ground (CG) lightning flash activity in the Western Antarctica using a lightning detector sensor installed at the Carlini Base station. Data obtained from the detection system between February and December 2017 were analyzed. Three common locations and areas of composite active thunderstorms (labelled storm regions A, B, and C) were detected by the sensor within a 1000 km radius from the station. Storm region A was located to the northwest (N/W) of the station and covered the Amundsen/Bellingshausen Sea (ABS), whereas storm region C was located on the southeastern (S/E) side of the station over the Weddell Sea (WS), with distances ranging from 500 to 800 km and bearings of 270° to 360° and 90° to 180, respectively. Storm region B was located around 100 km from the station with the bearings of stroke taken from 0° to 360°. A total of 2,019,923 flashes were detected, of which 43.01% were positive CG and 56.99% were negative CG flashes. The analysis revealed that more than 96% of the CG flashes (both positive CG and negative CG) were produced during the summer and fall seasons as compared with less than 4% during the winter and spring seasons. Most detected lightning strokes (>85%) were located in the central area around the station produced by storm region B and less than 15% were produced by storm region A and storm region C, located in the ocean areas over the Amundsen/Bellingshausen Sea and the Weddell Sea.

Inter-Comparison and Evaluation of the Four Longest Satellite-Derived Cloud Climate Data Records: CLARA-A2, ESA Cloud CCI V3, ISCCP-HGM, and PATMOS-x

Results from four global cloud climate data records (ISCCP-HGM, ESA Cloud CCI V3, CLARA-A2 and PATMOS-x) have been inter-compared in global time series plots, in global maps and in zonal region plots covering the period in common, 1984–2009. The investigated cloud parameters were total cloud fraction and cloud top pressure. Averaged seasonal cycles of cloud cover, as observed by the CALIPSO-CALIOP sensor over the 2007–2015 period, were also used as an additional independent and high-quality reference for the study of global cloud cover. All CDRs show good agreement on global cloud amounts (~65%) and also a weak negative trend (0.5–1.9% per decade) over the period of investigation. Deviations between the CDRs are seen especially over the southern mid-latitude region and over the poles. Particularly good results are shown by PATMOS-x and by ESA Cloud CCI V3 when compared to the CALIPSO-CALIOP reference. Results for cloud top pressure show large differences (~60 hPa) between ISCCP-HGM and the other CDRs for the global mean. The two CDR groups show also opposite signs in the trend over the period.

A potential hidden layer of meteorites below the ice surface of Antarctica

Antarctica contains some of the most productive regions on Earth for collecting meteorites. These small areas of glacial ice are known as meteorite stranding zones, where upward-flowing ice combines with high ablation rates to concentrate large numbers of englacially transported meteorites onto their surface. However, meteorite collection data shows that iron and stony-iron meteorites are significantly under-represented from these regions as compared with all other sites on Earth. Here we explain how this discrepancy may be due to englacial solar warming, whereby meteorites a few tens of centimetres below the ice surface can be warmed up enough to cause melting of their surrounding ice and sink downwards. We show that meteorites with a high-enough thermal conductivity (for example, iron meteorites) can sink at a rate sufficient to offset the total annual upward ice transport, which may therefore permanently trap them below the ice surface and explain their absence from collection data.

The depolarization-attenuated backscatter relationship for dust plumes

This study identified the relationship between the layer-integrated attenuated backscatter coefficient and layer-integrated depolarization ratio of dust plumes and compared it with that of cloud, using CALIPSO LIDAR measurements. The histogram distribution of the integrated color ratio for dust and cloud was also examined. On the basis of the layer-integrated attenuated backscatter coefficient and layer-integrated depolarization ratio relation, a simple method of detecting dust plumes was developed. A case study of dust identification over the Taklimakan Desert was conducted and compared with the current CALIPSO products. The result shows that the proposed method can significantly improve the classification of cloud and dust plumes and can supplement the current space-borne LIDAR discrimination approach, especially over dust source regions. In addition, The zonal and meridional mean occurrence derived by the proposed method and the CALIPSO's method were compared for Asian dust over East Asia region (30°N -45°N, 80°E -180°E) using the night measurements of CALIPSO from March to May, 2007. The comparison showed that the dust occurrence obtained from the proposed method is larger than that of CALIPSO's method. The dust could be found up to around 6-8 km (Above Sea Level, ASL) near the Taklimakan desert region, and maximum occurrence is over 80%. The transport altitude remained at 3 km-7 km (ASL) as the dust was transported across the Pacific Ocean.
