An Information-Theoretic Account of Semantic Interference in Word Production

I present a computational-level model of semantic interference effects in online word production within a rate–distortion framework. I consider a bounded-rational agent trying to produce words. The agent's action policy is determined by maximizing accuracy in production subject to computational constraints. These computational constraints are formalized using mutual information. I show that semantic similarity-based interference among words falls out naturally from this setup, and I present a series of simulations showing that the model captures some of the key empirical patterns observed in Stroop and Picture–Word Interference paradigms, including comparisons to human data from previous experiments.

Visual search under physical effort is faster but more vulnerable to distractor interference

Cognition and action are often intertwined in everyday life. It is thus pivotal to understand how cognitive processes operate with concurrent actions. The present study aims to assess how simple physical effort operationalized as isometric muscle contractions affects visual attention and inhibitory control. In a dual-task paradigm, participants performed a singleton search task and a handgrip task concurrently. In the search task, the target was a shape singleton among distractors with a homogeneous but different shape. A salient-but-irrelevant distractor with a unique color (i.e., color singleton) appeared on half of the trials (Singleton distractor present condition), and its presence often captures spatial attention. Critically, the visual search task was performed by the participants with concurrent hand grip exertion, at 5% or 40% of their maximum strength (low vs. high physical load), on a hand dynamometer. We found that visual search under physical effort is faster, but more vulnerable to distractor interference, potentially due to arousal and reduced inhibitory control, respectively. The two effects further manifest in different aspects of RT distributions that can be captured by different components of the ex-Gaussian model using hierarchical Bayesian method. Together, these results provide behavioral evidence and a novel model for two dissociable cognitive mechanisms underlying the effects of simple muscle exertion on the ongoing visual search process on a moment-by-moment basis.

A distributional and theoretical analysis of reaction time in the reversal task across adulthood

Reversal learning assesses components of executive function important for understanding cognitive changes with age. Extant reversal learning literature has largely assessed measures of accuracy, but reaction time (RT) has not yet been well characterized, perhaps due to the daunting task of analyzing non-normal RT distributions. The current study contributes to the literature by examining distributional and theoretical aspects of the entire RT distribution in addition to accuracy. Participant sample included young (N = 43) and community-dwelling, healthy, middle-aged (N = 139) adults. Results showed a Normal-3 Mixture distribution best fits the sample as a whole, with the ex-Gaussian distribution passing visual inspection. Age related significantly to various measures of RT (p's < 0.5); older age was associated with higher both efficient and overall RT, perhaps due to a more conservative criterion of decision-making. In a generalized adaptive elastic net regression, RT explained age-related differences in performance while accuracy did not contribute. Specifically, middle-aged adults were slower in efficient RT and had increased intra-individual variability which has been previously linked to poorer frontal lobe processes and age-related cognitive decline. Overall, these findings highlight the importance of examining the entire RT distribution and measuring RT as a fractionated construct to further explain age-related differences in reversal learning, even in middle-aged individuals.

Validation of a Bayesian Adaptive Estimation Technique in the Stop-Signal Task

The Stop Signal Task (SST), a commonly used measure of response inhibition, uses standard psychophysical methods to gain an estimate of the time needed to withhold a prepotent response. Under some circumstances, conventional forms of the SST are impractical to use because of the large number of trials necessary to gain a reliable estimate of the speed of inhibition. Here we applied to the SST an adaptive method for estimating psychometric parameters that can find reliable threshold estimates over a relatively small number of trials. The Ψ adaptive staircase, which uses a Bayesian algorithm to find the most likely parameters of a psychophysical function, was used to estimate the critical stop signal delay at which the probability of successful response inhibition equals 0.5. Using computational modeling and adult participants, estimates of stop signal reaction time (SSRT) based on the Ψ staircase were compared to estimates using the method of constant stimuli and a standard staircase method of adjustment. Results demonstrate that a reliable estimate of SSRT can be gained very quickly (20-30 stop trials), making the method very useful for testing populations that cannot maintain concentration for long periods or for rapidly obtaining multiple SSRT estimates from healthy adult participants.

Distributional analysis of semantic interference in picture naming

In picture–word interference experiments, participants name pictures (e.g., of a cat) while trying to ignore distractor words. Mean response time (RT) is typically longer with semantically related distractor words (e.g., dog) than with unrelated words (e.g., shoe), called semantic interference. Previous research has examined the RT distributional characteristics of distractor effects by performing ex-Gaussian analyses, which reveal whether effects are present in the normal part of the distribution (the μ parameter), its long right tail (the τ parameter), or both. One previous study linked the semantic interference effect selectively to the distribution tail. In the present study, we replicated the semantic interference effect in the mean picture naming RTs. Distributional analysis of the RTs and those of a previous study revealed that semantic interference was present in both μ and τ. These results provide evidence that the effect is not selectively linked to the τ parameter, and they warn against any simple one-to-one mapping between semantic interference and distributional parameters.

Application of the ex-Gaussian function to the effect of the word blindness suggestion on Stroop task performance suggests no word blindness

The aim of the present paper was to apply the ex-Gaussian function to data reported by Parris et al. (2012) given its utility in studies involving the Stroop task. Parris et al. showed an effect of the word blindness suggestion when Response-Stimulus Interval (RSI) was 500 ms but not when it was 3500 ms. Analysis revealed that: (1) The effect of the suggestion on interference is observed in μ, supporting converging evidence indicating the suggestion operates over response competition mechanisms; and, (2) Contrary to Parris et al. an effect of the suggestion was observed in μ when RSI was 3500 ms. The reanalysis of the data from Parris et al. (2012) supports the utility of ex-Gaussian analysis in revealing effects that might otherwise be thought of as absent. We suggest that word reading itself is not suppressed by the suggestion but instead that response conflict is dealt with more effectively.

RT distribution analysis of category congruence effects with masked primes

In the number magnitude decision task ("Is the number bigger/smaller than 5?"), response to a target (e.g., 3) is faster following a masked prime congruent with the target (e.g., 1) than it is following an incongruent prime (e.g., 9). This category congruence effect has been reported to be "interference-dominant" relative to a neutral prime (e.g., the # sign, the number 5) on the basis of the analysis of mean response time (RT). Using RT distribution analysis as well as mean RTs, we identified two bases for this pattern. One relates to the choice of neutral baseline: The # prime, unlike the digit prime, does not factor in the cost of perceptual transition between the prime and target, and therefore underestimates facilitation and overestimates the interference effect. The second basis of the interference-dominant pattern is a disproportionate slowdown of congruent trials in the slow RT bins. Furthermore, this slowdown is greater for primes that had been used as targets than it is with "novel" primes that have not been responded to as targets. We interpret the results as suggesting that the category congruence effect has two components with different time courses-one based on stimulus-response mapping, and the other on semantic categorization.

The Simon effect for vertical S-R relations: changing the mechanism by randomly varying the S-R mapping rule?

Recent findings indicate that the shape of the effect function of the Simon effect--derived by analysing the response time distribution for corresponding and non-corresponding trials--differs depending on the task. Specifically, decreasing effect functions have been reported for horizontal and stable rather increasing effect functions have been obtained for vertical stimulus-response (S-R) relations. Furthermore, it has been assumed that these differences reflect distinct mechanisms underlying the Simon effect. However, in two studies decreasing effect functions were reported for the vertical dimension. In order to investigate these contradictory findings four experiments were conducted. Since both studies--in which a decreasing effect function was obtained--used a modified version of the Simon task, that is, randomly varying S-R mapping rules, the Simon effect for fixed and random S-R mapping rules was investigated using vertical (Experiments 1, 2, and 4) and horizontal (Experiment 3) S-R relations. The results indicate that randomly varying S-R mapping rules affect the shape of the effect function for vertical but not for horizontal S-R relations. It was concluded that these findings indicate that the alternation of S-R mapping rules changes the information processing for the vertical dimension in a way, that the same mechanism as for horizontal S-R relations occurs.
