EFL Teachers' Optimism and Commitment and Their Contribution to Students' Academic Success

The present review study determines to scrutinize EFL teachers' optimism and commitment and their contribution to students' academic success. Academic optimism, as a new construct, is evolving from the examination of the positive psychology (PP), societal principal, and communal school assets that affect the attainment and success of all learners. In addition, within the past decades, commitment has received a great level of consideration, principally in the domain of structural research. The straightforward perseverance of this review is to extend the concept of academic optimism to individuals, that is, to hypothesize theoretical optimism and approve the efficacy of this paradigm at the instructor level in relation to students' academic success. According to the literature review, the definitions of these constructs, namely teachers' optimism and commitment, and students' academic success, as well as empirical studies in this domain are presented. As a conclusion, this study, to some extent, promotes the educators' mindfulness about their commitment. In this respect, pedagogical implications for teachers, school principals, teacher-trainers, and future researchers are presented, and new guidelines for further research are determined.

The Role of Negative Affect in the Assessment of Quality of Life among Women with Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus

BACKGROUND

The purpose of this study is to determine the impact of negative affect (defined in terms of lack of optimism, depressogenic attributional style, and hopelessness depression) on the quality of life of women with type 1 diabetes mellitus.

METHODS

Participants (n=177) completed either an online or paper questionnaire made available to members of Australian diabetes support groups. Measures of optimism, attributional style, hopelessness depression, disease-specific data, and diabetes-related quality of life were sought. Bivariate correlations informed the construction of a structural equation model.

RESULTS

Participants were 36.3±11.3 years old, with a disease duration of 18.4±11.2 years. Age and recent glycosylated hemoglobin readings were significant contextual variables in the model. All bivariate associations involving the components of negative affect were as hypothesized. That is, poorer quality of life was associated with a greater depressogenic attributional style, higher hopelessness depression, and lower optimism. The structural equation model demonstrated significant direct effects of depressogenic attributional style and hopelessness depression on quality of life, while (lack of) optimism contributed to quality of life indirectly by way of these variables.

CONCLUSION

The recognition of negative affect presentations among patients, and an understanding of its relevance to diabetes-related quality of life, is a valuable tool for the practitioner.

The association among depressive symptoms, smoking status and antidepressant use in cardiac outpatients

Both depression and smoking are highly prevalent and related to poorer outcomes in cardiac patients. In this study, the authors examined the association between depressive symptoms and smoking status, described the frequency and type of antidepressant use, and prospectively tested the effects of antidepressant use in smokers on smoking status and psychosocial outcomes. Participants comprised 1,498 coronary artery disease (CAD) outpatients who completed a baseline survey which assessed depressive symptoms, current medications, and smoking status. A second survey was mailed 9 months later that assessed depressive symptoms, anxiety, insomnia and smoking status. Results showed that current and former-smokers had significantly greater depressive symptoms than non-smokers. Ten percent of patients were taking antidepressants, most frequently SSRIs, with significantly more smokers on antidepressants than former and non-smokers. At follow-up, smokers on antidepressants were less likely to have quit, had greater anxiety, depressive symptoms and insomnia than smokers not using antidepressants. This study demonstrated that smokers and quitters with CAD had greater depressive symptoms and use of antidepressants than non-smokers, but that the antidepressants utilized may not be optimizing outcomes.

Coping competence as predictor and moderator of depression among chronic disease patients

This tested the utility of the "Coping Competence Questionnaire" (CCQ) in predicting depression among chronic disease patients. Coping competence is defined as a dispositional stress resistance factor based on helplessness and hopelessness theory. Predictive power and buffering effects of the CCQ were tested in three patient samples scheduled for Coronary Artery Bypass Surgery (N = 272), other heart surgeries (N = 109), or lung tumor surgery (N = 203). Coping competence, symptom stress, and depression were assessed before and 6-months following surgery. Hierarchical multiple regressions indicated moderator effects of coping competence in the relationship between symptom stress and depression, supporting the stress-buffer hypothesis. Symptom stress was strongly correlated with depression among patients who were low in coping competence only. Among patients high in coping competence, depression was low and unaffected by symptom stress. The results suggest that the 12-item coping competence scale may qualify as useful tool for the prediction of depression in chronic disease populations.
