Word-based grouping affects the prime-task effect on semantic priming

Structure-Based Modulation of Inhibition of Return is Triggered by Object-Internal but not Occluding Shape Features

When attention is oriented to an object it is inhibited from returning to the same object following a short delay. This inhibition-of-return (IOR) effect is modulated by an edge discontinuity presented between cue and target—an effect referred to as structure-based modulation of IOR. Here we examined two alternative accounts for the structure-based modulation effect. On one account the modulation is caused by the presence of any intervening feature between cue and target. On another account the modulation is caused by edge-bounded (i.e., closed) regions of space, on which space-based selection mechanisms operate. We presented cues and targets on unsegmented and internally or externally segmented rectangles to examine the two alternative accounts for the effect. Contrary to the predictions of the two alternative accounts, structure-based modulation of IOR was found with the internally but not with the externally segmented displays. This supports our hypothesis that object-based IOR arises from perceptually complete and internally structured object representations.

Task difficulty and response complexity modulate affective priming by emotional facial expressions

In this study we used an affective priming task to address the issue of whether the processing of emotional facial expressions occurs automatically independent of attention or attentional resources. Participants had to attend to the emotion expression of the prime face, or to a nonemotional feature of the prime face, the glasses. When participants attended to glasses (emotion unattended), they had to report whether the face wore glasses or not (the glasses easy condition) or whether the glasses were rounded or squared (the shape difficult condition). Affective priming, measured on valence decisions on target words, was mainly defined as interference from incongruent rather than facilitation from congruent trials. Significant priming effects were observed just in the emotion and glasses tasks but not in the shape task. When the key-response mapping increased in complexity, taxing working memory load, affective priming effects were reduced equally for the three types of tasks. Thus, attentional load and working memory load affected additively to the observed reduction in affective priming. These results cast some doubts on the automaticity of processing emotional facial expressions.

Masked priming effect reflects evidence accumulated by the prime

In the same–different match task, masked priming is observed with the same responses but not different responses. Norris and Kinoshita's (2008) Bayesian reader account of masked priming explains this pattern based on the same principle as that explaining the absence of priming for nonwords in the lexical decision task. The pattern of priming follows from the way the model makes optimal decisions in the two tasks; priming does not depend on first activating the prime and then the target. An alternative explanation is in terms of a bias towards responding “same” that exactly counters the facilitatory effect of lexical access. The present study tested these two views by varying both the degree to which the prime predicts the response and the visibility of the prime. Unmasked primes produced effects expected from the view that priming is influenced by the degree to which the prime predicts the response. In contrast, with masked primes, the size of priming for the same response was completely unaffected by predictability. These results rule out response bias as an explanation of the absence of masked priming for different responses and, in turn, indicate that masked priming is not a consequence of automatic lexical access of the prime.

N400, the reference electrode, and the semantic activation in prime-task experiments: a reply to Dombrowski and Heil (2006)

In two recent papers, Heil et al. [Heil, M., Rolke, B., Pecchinenda, A., 2004. Automatic semantic activation is no myth: semantic context effects on the N400 in the Letter-Search task in the absence of response time effects. Psychol. Sci., 15 (12), 852-857] and Marí-Beffa et al. [Marí-Beffa, P., Valdés, B., Cullen, D.J.D., Catena, A., Houghton, G., 2005. ERP analyses of task effects on semantic processing from words. Cogn. Brain Res., 23, 293-305] found opposite ERP effects of semantic priming following letter search (as measured by the N400). Dombrowski and Heil [Dombrowski, J.H., Heil, M., 2006. Semantic activation, letter search and N400: a reply to Marí-Beffa, Valdés, Cullen, Catena and Houghton (2005). Brain Res., 1073-1074, 440-443] have argued that the N400 modulation associated to semantic priming found by Marí-Beffa et al. [Marí-Beffa, P., Valdés, B., Cullen, D.J.D., Catena, A., Houghton, G., 2005. ERP analyses of task effects on semantic processing from words. Cogn. Brain Res., 23, 293-305] is due to the use of electrode Cz as reference, rather than to the task manipulation being studied (letter search vs. categorisation). In the current article we argue that the conclusions of Dombrowski and Heil are mistaken and are due in part on a misreading of Marí-Beffa et al. [Marí-Beffa, P., Valdés, B., Cullen, D.J.D., Catena, A., Houghton, G., 2005. ERP analyses of task effects on semantic processing from words. Cogn. Brain Res., 23, 293-305]. We argue instead that the differences between the results of Heil et al. [Heil, M., Rolke, B., Pecchinenda, A., 2004. Automatic semantic activation is no myth: semantic context effects on the N400 in the Letter-Search task in the absence of response time effects. Psychol. Sci., 15 (12), 852-857] and Marí-Beffa et al. [Marí-Beffa, P., Valdés, B., Cullen, D.J.D., Catena, A., Houghton, G., 2005. ERP analyses of task effects on semantic processing from words. Cogn. Brain Res., 23, 293-305] are largely due to differences in experimental method and procedure, rather than to the technique used for the ERP analysis.

Congruency effects in the letter search task: Semantic activation in the absence of priming

Semantic priming is typically eliminated when participants perform a letter search on the prime, suggesting that semantic activation is conditional upon one's attentional goals. However, in such studies, semantic activation (or the lack thereof) is not measured during the letter search task itself but, instead, is inferred on the basis of the responses given to a later target. In the present study, direct online evidence for semanticactivation was tested using words whose meaning should bias either a positive or a negative response (e.g.,present vs. absent). In Experiment 1, a semantic congruency effect was obtained, with faster responses when the word meaning matched the required response. Experiment 2 replicated the congruency effect while, simultaneously, showing the elimination of semantic priming. It is concluded that letter search does not affect the initiation of semantic activation. Possible accounts for the elimination of priming following letter search include activation-based suppression and transfer-inappropriate processing.

Dissociating object- and response-based components of negative priming through effects of practice

The negative priming (NP) effect is the slowing of responses to an imperative stimulus (probe) that has recently been ignored (prime). Prevailing accounts of the phenomenon attribute it to a variety of causes, all centered on a representation of the stimulus event itself. However, we argue that the most commonly used NP paradigms confound stimulus- and response-based factors. In two experiments, we demonstrate the importance of response factors in producing NP and show clear empirical dissociations between object- and response-centered NP when studying their time courses over extended practice. When distractors compete for a response (response-based), the NP effect is both more robust and more resistant to the effects of practice. On the other hand, when prime distractors do not compete for response (object-based), they yield weaker NP effects that disappear with practice. We conclude that the NP effects shown in the most common procedures are produced by a combination of distinct factors that tend to act in the same direction.

ERP analyses of task effects on semantic processing from words

Semantic (positive) priming refers to the facilitated processing of a probe word when preceded by a related prime word, and is a widely used technique for investigating semantic activation. However, the effect is interrupted or eliminated when attention is directed to low-level features of the prime word, such as its letters, a result which has been used to question the automaticity of semantic processing. We investigated this issue using both behavioural [reaction time (RT)] and electrophysiological measures [event-related potentials (ERPs)]. Subjects performed semantic categorization (living vs. nonliving) and letter search ("A" or "E") tasks on prime words followed by lexical decision on the probe. RT results showed the expected elimination of semantic priming following letter search. However, both prime tasks were affected by the semantic category of the prime, indicating that the meaning was processed. The ERP results supported this conclusion: an early component previously associated with automatic semantic processing [the Recognition Potential (RP)] was sensitive to the category of the prime word irrespective of the prime task. However, a later component (N400) was significantly affected by the task, in both the prime (categorization task) and probe words (semantic priming). The results dissociate rapid, automatic semantic processing from semantic priming. We suggest that a later inhibitory control mechanism suppresses this semantic activation when it is not relevant to the task, and that this produces the loss of semantic priming.

The modulation of inhibition of return by object-internal structure: implications for theories of object-based attentional selection

Recently, Vecera, Behrmann, and McGoldrick (2000), using a divided-attention task, reported that targets are detected more accurately when they occur on the same structural part of an object, suggesting that attention can be directed toward object-internal features. We present converging evidence using the object-based inhibition of return (IOR) paradigm as an implicit measure of selection. The results show that IOR is attenuated when cues and targets appear on the same part of an object relative to when they are separated by a part boundary. These findings suggest that object-based mechanisms of selection can operate over shape representations that make explicit information about object-internal structure.

Inhibition of return for objects and locations in static displays

When orienting attention, inhibition mechanisms prevent the return of attention to previously examined stimuli. This inhibition of the return of attention (IOR) has been shown to be associated additively with location- and object-based representations. That is, when static objects are attended, IOR is associated with both the object and the location cued, and hence IOR is larger than when only spatial location is attended. Recently McAuliffe, Pratt, and O'Donnell (2001) failed to observe such additive effects except under a narrow set of conditions (at short cue-target intervals and using mixed blocks in which object- and pure location-based effects were probed in the same display). The present study shows that additive IOR effects are observed under conditions that violate all of these boundary conditions. The results also show that IOR is modulated by internal structural properties of objects. These findings are cosistent with the hypothesis that IOR operates over functionally independent object- and location-based frames of reference.

Priming and interference effects can be dissociated in the Stroop task: new evidence in favor of the automaticity of word recognition

Recently, Besner, Stolz, and Boutilier (1997) showed that by coloring a single letter instead of the whole word, Stroop interference is reduced or even eliminated, a result that is at odds with the widely accepted assumption that word recognition is automatic. In a replication of the Besner et al. study, we computed priming effects in addition to the standard Stroop interference. Interference results replicated those of Besner et al. Also, negative priming in the all-letter-colored condition and positive priming in the single-letter-colored condition were obtained. Priming findings demonstrate that word processing can take place in the absence of interference effects. These results support the view of automatic processing of words in the Stroop task and call for priming as a more appropriate measure of word processing than interference.

Semantic priming in the prime task effect: evidence of automatic semantic processing of distractors

The automaticity of the semantic processing of words has been questioned because of the reduction of semantic priming when the prime word is processed nonsemantically--for example, in letter search (the prime task effect). In two experiments, prime distractor words produced semantic priming in a subsequent lexical decision task, but with the direction of priming (positive or negative) depending on the prime task. Lexico-semantic tasks produced negative semantic priming, whereas letter search produced positive semantic priming. These results are discussed in terms of task-based inhibition. We argue that, given the results from the distractors, the absence of semantic priming does not indicate an absence of semantic activation but reflects the action of control processes on prepotent responses when less practiced responses are needed.
