The effect of sensory feedback on the timing of movements: evidence from deafferented patients

The role of sensory feedback in the control of movements was investigated in two deafferented patients with complete loss of cutaneous touch and movement/position sense below the neck and two control groups of different ages. In a synchronized repetitive finger-tapping task in time with a regular auditory pacing signal, the deafferented participants showed a strong influence of extrinsic feedback. In contrast to controls who demonstrated a typical asynchrony between their taps and the pacing signal in all feedback conditions, the deafferented participants, with auditory feedback and visual monitoring, showed no asynchrony between finger taps and the pacing signal. These findings support the view that sensory information plays a crucial role in the anticipatory timing of movements.

Mechanism Involvement During Skill Imagery

Explanations of the effects of initial mental imagery practice on the subsequent performance of a motor task may be divided into two categories. In-flow explanations propose that proprioceptive feedback generated during imagery practice serves as the underlying mechanism while outflow explanations claim that cognitive operations (e.g., motor programs) generated during skill imagery serve as the basis for physical performance. A test of these two models was conducted by comparing unilateral and bilateral transfer in a rotary pursuit task following either imagery or physical practice (cf. Wallace, 1977). The results showed that all transfer groups produced positive transfer relative to a no-practice control group. Further, unilateral transfer was greater than bilateral transfer for physical practice. There was no difference between unilateral and bilateral transfer for imagery practice. These data were interpreted as evidence for an outflow explanation of skill imagery.

Proprioceptive Feedback as a Mediator in Interlimb Timing

Prior findings regarded as evidence for proprioceptive feedback as a mediator in interlimb timing can also be interpreted as evidence for motor outflow because they came from research that had subjects make voluntary movements, and such movements allow for both feedback and outflow to operate. The present study was designed to resolve this controversy by determining if these findings could be replicated with passive movements which allow for feedback, but not outflow, to operate. The interlimb timing task studied was one where subjects made the timing response with their right hand while moving their left arm during the 1.5-sec interval to be timed. Three groups of 16 male college students performed 50 trials of the right-hand response with knowledge of results, under one of three left-arm conditions: (a) passive movement, (b) voluntary movement, and (c) no movement. The results indicated that the findings were replicated with passive movements and this was interpreted as support for the involvement of proprioceptive feedback in interlimb timing.
