Lessons learned from undocumented Latinx immigrants: How to build resilience and overcome distress in the face of adversity

Implications of Undocumented Status for Latinx Families During the COVID-19 Pandemic: A Call to Action

BACKGROUND

A disproportionate number of COVID-19 cases and deaths have been reported among Latinxs in the U.S. Among those most affected by the pandemic are marginalized families, including those that are undocumented and mixed-status, in which some, but not all members are undocumented. Undocumented and mixed-status families face multiple and chronic daily stressors that compromised their health and wellbeing. Salient stressors faced by undocumented Latinx families include poverty, social disadvantage, discrimination, dangerous living and working conditions, and limited access to healthcare. These stressors are frequently compounded with trauma, fear of detention, deportation, and family separation.

PURPOSE

Informed by the literature and insights from our community-based work to address the health needs of undocumented and mixed status Latinx families during the pandemic, this paper uses a social determinants of health lens to present a narrative summary that highlights four primary psychosocial stressors faced by these families and their implications for mental health.

DISCUSSION

These include stressors pertaining to (a) anti-immigrant rhetoric and actions; (b) family stressors and disruptions in family dynamics; (c) economic changes and financial losses; and (c) limited access to healthcare. Implications of the aforesaid stressors on the mental health of undocumented families and youth are also discussed. In addition, recommendations are provided for the provision of mental health services, best practices, and resources from a strengths-based approach.

Post-Rape Experiences of Undocumented Mexican Women in the U.S.-Mexico Border Region: A Critical Ethnography

Introduction: Numerous undocumented immigrant women in the United States have survived rape, and many have experienced physical and psychological consequences. Although rape disclosure can facilitate early intervention and improve health outcomes, most undocumented immigrant women do not disclose rape, and little is known about their post-rape experiences. Methods: This critical ethnography explored the post-rape experiences of undocumented immigrant women of Mexican (UIWM) origin living in the U.S. Mexico border region. Data collection and analysis were guided by Carspecken's framework for critical qualitative research. Six women, who identified as UIWM participated in the study. Each was interviewed using a semistructured approach. Results: Interview data revealed three domains: Glimpses of Support, Barrier After Barrier, and Overcoming. In accordance with Carspecken's framework, a theoretical lens was applied to these domains. The application of Feminist Intersectional Theory and Standpoint Theory united the domains into the theme Struggling to Heal. Conclusion: This study suggests that the marginalization of these survivors detrimentally impacts their post-rape experiences and describes the intersections of multiple forces on their experiences, including the cultural and sociopolitical context of the border region. This study lays the foundation for future research aimed at mitigating disclosure and help-seeking barriers for this marginalized group.

Xenophobia and discrimination: Consequences for latinx immigrants and pathways to restoration & healing

The United States is often conceptualized as a country of immigrants, with an origin story of multicultural, multilingual, diverse foreign-born populations coming together to create the fabric of the nation. This narrative emerges through many domains of American society, frequently depicting an image of opportunity for all. Yet historically and contemporarily, immigration has been racialized and wrought with oppressive practices and policies. Research has shown that white Americans tend to define "American" as synonymous with "white" and subsequently perceive those who appear phenotypically not white (e.g., darker skin tones) as "less American." This phenomenon is reflected in immigration policy and lived experiences of minoritized immigrants. Vast theoretical and empirical literature documents the deleterious consequences of discrimination across domains of physical (e.g., hypertension, compromised immune functioning) and psychological health (e.g., ethno-racial trauma, depression). While it is critical to highlight the harmful effects of racism and xenophobia on immigrant well-being, the intent of this article is to also explore how indigenous, restorative healing practices may help communities and individuals heal from xenophobia and discrimination. Thus, the aim of this piece is twofold; (1) briefly discuss and contextualize the systems of oppression impacting immigrants, specifically Latinx communities in the United States, and (2) provide a framework for restoration and radical healing for Latinx immigrants.

Extending the Psychology of Working Model for Latinx Youth: Incorporating Youth Voice

Psychology of working theory (PWT) emphasizes the role of contextual constraints in career development, as well as promotive factors that might be cultivated to navigate these constraints. Although PWT has implications for promoting youth career development, most research has focused on college students and working adults. We interviewed 12 youth residing in a Latinx community with a high level of poverty and attending a well-resourced private high school with a high degree of college acceptance to explore developmentally and culturally relevant promotive factors that might inform the extension of PWT for youth. Analyses conducted through Consensual Qualitative Research revealed a strong sense of purpose and hope that were grounded in family, school, and workplace supports. Participants reported critical awareness of societal inequities and a focus on challenging inequity through hard work rather than societal change. We discuss implications for extending PWT theory, research, and intervention with Latinx youth.
