Topography of inputs into the hippocampal formation of a food-caching bird

The mammalian hippocampal formation (HF) is organized into domains associated with different functions. These differences are driven in part by the pattern of input along the hippocampal long axis, such as visual input to the septal hippocampus and amygdalar input to temporal hippocampus. HF is also organized along the transverse axis, with different patterns of neural activity in the hippocampus and the entorhinal cortex. In some birds, a similar organization has been observed along both of these axes. However, it is not known what role inputs play in this organization. We used retrograde tracing to map inputs into HF of a food-caching bird, the black-capped chickadee. We first compared two locations along the transverse axis: the hippocampus and the dorsolateral hippocampal area (DL), which is analogous to the entorhinal cortex. We found that pallial regions predominantly targeted DL, while some subcortical regions like the lateral hypothalamus (LHy) preferentially targeted the hippocampus. We then examined the hippocampal long axis and found that almost all inputs were topographic along this direction. For example, the anterior hippocampus was preferentially innervated by thalamic regions, while posterior hippocampus received more amygdalar input. Some of the topographies we found bear resemblance to those described in the mammalian brain, revealing a remarkable anatomical similarity of phylogenetically distant animals. More generally, our work establishes the pattern of inputs to HF in chickadees. Some of these patterns may be unique to chickadees, laying the groundwork for studying the anatomical basis of these birds ’ exceptional hippocampal memory.

The Role of Neuroplasticity in Improving the Decision-Making Quality of Individuals With Agenesis of the Corpus Callosum: A Systematic Review

Although individuals with agenesis of corpus callosum (ACC) possess intelligence coefficients within regular parameters, current studies have demonstrated decision-making compromise and potential negative social consequences. Furthermore, alternative pathways regarding brain connectivity in acallosal patients combined with cognitive therapy that would potentially mitigate such difficulties. Therefore, this study aimed to examine the current state of the art regarding brain foundations in the role of neuroplasticity by improving the decision-making quality in ACC.

A systematic revision of literature was performed including studies conducted on non-syndromic ACC individuals and analyzing the impact of the potential role of neuroplasticity on the decision-making published to date. Studies with patients who underwent callosotomy were excluded. Experimental studies performed on animal models were included.

During this period, 849 studies were identified; among them, 11 were eligible for qualitative analysis. Despite the paucity of evidence on this matter, patients with ACC present considerable decision-making difficulties mainly due to the functional connectivity impairment in the frontal lobes. Moreover, neuroplasticity was characterized by increased anterior commissure width as compared with controls. Notwithstanding, no studies were conducted on cognitive therapists managing this type of disease.

Although the reorganization of inter-hemispheric bundles on anterior commissure has demonstrated the main natural neuroanatomic strategy in ACC, further evidence will be needed to clarify whether cognitive stimulus could improve the decision-making quality.

Digital embryos: a novel technical approach to investigate perceptual categorization in pigeons (Columba livia) using machine learning

Pigeons are classic model animals to study perceptual category learning. To achieve a deeper understanding of the cognitive mechanisms of categorization, a careful consideration of the employed stimulus material and a thorough analysis of the choice behavior is mandatory. In the present study, we combined the use of “virtual phylogenesis”, an evolutionary algorithm to generate artificial yet naturalistic stimuli termed digital embryos and a machine learning approach on the pigeons’ pecking responses to gain insight into the underlying categorization strategies of the animals. In a forced-choice procedure, pigeons learned to categorize these stimuli and transferred their knowledge successfully to novel exemplars. We used peck tracking to identify where on the stimulus the animals pecked and further investigated whether this behavior was indicative of the pigeon’s choice. Going beyond the classical analysis of the binary choice, we were able to predict the presented stimulus class based on pecking location using a k-nearest neighbor classifier, indicating that pecks are related to features of interest. By analyzing error trials with this approach, we further identified potential strategies of the pigeons to discriminate between stimulus classes. These strategies remained stable during category transfer, but differed between individuals indicating that categorization learning is not limited to a single learning strategy.
