On the emergence of primary visual perception

We propose a concise novel conceptual and biological framework for the analysis of primary visual perception (PVP) that refers to the most basic levels of our awake subjective visual experiences. Neural representations for image content elaborated within V1/V2 and the early occipitotemporal (ventral) loop remain only latent with respect to PVP until spatially localized with respect to an attending observer. This process requires more than the downstream deployment of attentional resources onto targeted neurons. Additionally, the source neurons for such processes must be linked to a neural representation subserving a first-person perspective. We hypothesize that the simultaneous emergence of both the perceptual experience of image content and the personal inference of its ownership requires the resolution of any conflicting neuronal signaling between afferent and recurrent projections within and between both the ventral and dorsal streams. The V1/V2 complex and ventral cortical areas V3 and the V4 complex together with dorsal cortical areas LIP, VIP, and 7a with additional contributions from the motion areas V5/MT (middle temporal area), FST (fundus of superior temporal area), and MST (medial superior temporal area) together with their subcortical dependencies have the physiological properties required to constitute a "posterior perceptual core" that encodes the normal primary perceptual experience of image content, space, and sense of minimal self.

Goal-directed whisking increases phase-locking between vibrissa movement and electrical activity in primary sensory cortex in rat

We tested the hypothesis that behavioral context modulates phase-locking between rhythmic motor activity and concomitant electrical activity induced in primary sensory (S1) cortex. We used exploratory whisking by rat as a model system and recorded two measures: (i) the mystacial electromyogram ( nabla EMG) as a surrogate of vibrissa position, and (ii) the field potential ( nabla LFP) in S1 cortex as an indicator of electrical activity. The degree to which the nabla EMG and nabla LFP were phase-locked was compared for three categories of rhythmic whisking: (i) searching for an object with the vibrissae for a food reward, (ii) whisking in air for the goal of returning to the home cage, and (iii) whisking with no reward. We observed that the magnitude of phase-locking was nearly tripled for the two rewarded conditions compared to unrewarded whisking. Critically, increased locking was not accompanied by an increase in the amplitude of the cortical nabla LFP for the rewarded tasks. Additional experiments showed that there was no significant relation between the amplitude of a sensory-evoked response in S1 cortex and the magnitude of the locking between the nabla EMG and the nabla LFP during whisking. We conclude that the behavioral context of a whisking task can increase the modulation of S1 cortical activity by motor output without a concomitant increase in the magnitude of activity.

Quantitative assessment of the timing and tuning of visual-related, saccade-related, and delay period activity in primate central thalamus

This study investigates the visuomotor properties of several nuclei within primate central thalamus. These nuclei, which might be considered components of an oculomotor thalamus (OcTh), are found within and at the borders of the internal medullary lamina. These nuclei have extensive anatomical links to numerous cortical and subcortical visuomotor areas including the frontal eye fields, supplementary eye fields, prefrontal cortex, posterior parietal cortex, caudate, and substantia nigra pars reticulata. Previous single-unit recordings have shown that neurons in OcTh respond during self-paced spontaneous saccades and to visual stimuli in the absence of any specific behavioral requirement, but a thorough account of the activity of these areas in association with voluntary, goal-directed movement is lacking. We recorded activity from single neurons in primate central thalamus during performance of a visually guided delayed saccade task. The sample consisted primarily of neurons from the centrolateral and paracentral intralaminar nuclei and paralaminar regions of the ventral anterior and ventral lateral nuclei. Neurons responsive to sensory, delay, and motor phases of the task were observed in each region, with many neurons modulated during multiple task periods. Across the population, variation in the quality and timing of saccade-contingent activity suggested participation in functions ranging from generating a saccade (presaccadic) to registering its consequences (e.g., efference copy). Finally, many neurons were found to carry spatial information during the delay period, suggesting a role for central thalamus in higher-order aspects of visuomotor control.

Problems for judgment and decision making

This review examines recent developments during the past 5 years in the field of judgment and decision making, written in the form of a list of 16 research problems. Many of the problems involve natural extensions of traditional, originally rational, theories of decision making. Others are derived from descriptive algebraic modeling approaches or from recent developments in cognitive psychology and cognitive neuroscience.

An evaluation of a new gel-coupled ultrasound device for the quantitative assessment of bone

Quantitative ultrasound (QUS) is now being accepted as a tool in the assessment of bone status. Most QUS devices measure broadband ultrasound attenuation (BUA) and speed of sound (SOS). A newly introduced device, the Acoustic Osteo-Screener (AOS-100), measures both SOS and an attenuation related parameter called the transmission index (TI) and provides a derived parameter called osteo sono-assessment index (OSI). The purpose of this study was to examine the reproducibility of this new device, compare the results with the UBA 575+ and evaluate the effect of using two platforms to compensate for different foot sizes on the measured values. 83 subjects aged 21-89 years, who gave informed consent, were recruited. Subjects were assigned to three different groups determined by age and health status. The short-term measurement precision (expressed as root mean square coefficient of variation) of SOS (0.13-0.16%) and TI (1.18-1.96%) was similar to and better than that obtained for the UBA 575+. Significant negative correlations were found between the differences in SOS measured with the two platforms (adaptors to adjust the position of the foot relative to the foot plate) and foot length (p < 0.0001). This implies that small feet are more influenced by the differences of measured location. All QUS parameters measured with the small platform were found to be significantly smaller than those with the large platform (p < 0.0001). The mean percentage differences were 0.6% in SOS, 2.8% in TI and 4.3% in OSI with the large foot platform giving larger value results. Proper use of the platforms resulted in more reproducible SOS and TI. This study demonstrated that the newly developed AOS-100 parameters TI and OSI were highly reproducible. This study also demonstrated that the use of an inappropriate platform can cause discrepancies in QUS readings and poor reproducibility.
