Ionic structure in aqueous electrolyte solution by the difference method of X-ray diffraction

Dissolving salt is not equivalent to applying a pressure on water

Salt water is ubiquitous, playing crucial roles in geological and physiological processes. Despite centuries of investigations, whether or not water’s structure is drastically changed by dissolved ions is still debated. Based on density functional theory, we employ machine learning based molecular dynamics to model sodium chloride, potassium chloride, and sodium bromide solutions at different concentrations. The resulting reciprocal-space structure factors agree quantitatively with neutron diffraction data. Here we provide clear evidence that the ions in salt water do not distort the structure of water in the same way as neat water responds to elevated pressure. Rather, the computed structural changes are restricted to the ionic first solvation shells intruding into the hydrogen bond network, beyond which the oxygen radial-distribution function does not undergo major change relative to neat water. Our findings suggest that the widely cited pressure-like effect on the solvent in Hofmeister series ionic solutions should be carefully revisited.

By advanced machine learning techniques, first-principles simulations find that dissolving salt in water does not change water structure drastically. It is contrary to the notion of “pressure effect” which has been widely applied over past 25 years.

Composition effect on the aggregate/solution interface of a nematic lyotropic liquid crystal

We study how the concentration of phospholipids, decanol and NaCl affects the bilayer and the liquid crystal/solution interface structures of lyotropic nematic liquid crystals.

The QM-MM interface for CHARMM-deMon

We present a new QM/MM interface for fast and efficient simulations of organic and biological molecules. The CHARMM/deMon interface has been developed and tested to perform minimization and atomistic simulations for multi-particle systems. The current features of this QM/MM interface include readability for molecular dynamics, tested compatibility with Free Energy Perturbation simulations (FEP) using the dual topology/single coordinate method. The current coupling scheme uses link atoms, but further extensions of the code to incorporate other available schemes are planned. We report the performance of different levels of theory for the treatment of the QM region, while the MM region was represented by a classical force-field (CHARMM27) or a polarizable force-field based on a simple Drude model. The current QM/MM implementation can be coupled to the dual-thermostat method and the VV2 integrator to run molecular dynamics simulations.

Ion solvation and water structure in potassium halide aqueous solutions

The structure of water and the nature of ionic hydration is explored in aqueous solutions of potassium fluoride, chloride, bromide and iodide over a range of concentrations up to 4.8 ion pairs per 100 water molecules, using the combined techniques of neutron diffraction with hydrogen isotope substitution. The diffraction data are interpreted using the method of empirical potential structure refinement, which attempts to build a three-dimensional model of the scattering system consistent with the diffraction data. The water structure is strongly perturbed in the first hydration shells of both anion and cation, but is found to be only mildly perturbed outside of this region, with the largest effects occurring with the smallest anion and highest concentrations. For the potassium ion there are strong orientational correlations in the first hydration shell, with the water molecules lying with their dipole moments pointing almost directly away from the cation on average, but with an angular spread of approximately +/-60 degrees which is mildly dependent on the anion type present. For all the anions the water molecules in the first shell are strongly oriented with one O-H vector pointing directly towards the anion on average, with an angular spread of approximately +/-10 degrees for F(-), increasing to approximately +/-22 degrees for I(-). For both anions and cations the second hydration shell is much more disordered than the first, but there is a weak pattern of orientational correlation which becomes more pronounced with the larger anions. There is some evidence that the fluoride ion structures water significantly in its first hydration shell, but not beyond. The findings throw further light on recent findings that the orientational relaxation time for water outside the first shell of dissolved ions is the same as in the bulk liquid.

The hydration structure of guanidinium and thiocyanate ions: implications for protein stability in aqueous solution

Neutron diffraction experiments were carried out on aqueous solutions containing either guanidinium or thiocyanate ions. The first-order difference method of neutron diffraction and isotopic substitution was applied, and the hydration structures of two of nature's strongest denaturant ions were determined. Each ion is shown to interact weakly with water: Guanidinium has no recognizable hydration shell and is one of the most weakly hydrated cations yet characterized. Hydration of thiocyanate is characterized by a low coordination number involving around one hydrogen-bonded water molecule and approximately two water molecules weakly interacting through "hydration bonds." The weak hydration of these denaturant ions strongly supports suggestions that a major contribution to the denaturant effect is the preferential interaction of the denaturant with the protein surface. By contrast, solute species such as many sugars and related polyols that stabilize proteins are strongly hydrated and are thus preferentially retained in the bulk solvent and excluded from the protein surface.
