Avoiding twisted pixels: ethical guidelines for the appropriate use and manipulation of scientific digital images

Digital imaging has provided scientists with new opportunities to acquire and manipulate data using techniques that were difficult or impossible to employ in the past. Because digital images are easier to manipulate than film images, new problems have emerged. One growing concern in the scientific community is that digital images are not being handled with sufficient care. The problem is twofold: (1) the very small, yet troubling, number of intentional falsifications that have been identified, and (2) the more common unintentional, inappropriate manipulation of images for publication. Journals and professional societies have begun to address the issue with specific digital imaging guidelines. Unfortunately, the guidelines provided often do not come with instructions to explain their importance. Thus they deal with what should or should not be done, but not the associated 'why' that is required for understanding the rules. This article proposes 12 guidelines for scientific digital image manipulation and discusses the technical reasons behind these guidelines. These guidelines can be incorporated into lab meetings and graduate student training in order to provoke discussion and begin to bring an end to the culture of "data beautification".

Long-term data storage in DNA

This article discusses how DNA might be used to store data. It is argued that, at present, DNA would be best employed as a long-term repository (thousands or millions of years). How data-containing DNA might be packaged and how the data might be encrypted, with particular attention to the encryption of written information, is also discussed. Various encryption issues are touched on, such as how data-containing DNA might be differentiated from genetic material, error detection, data compression and reading frame location. Finally, this article broaches the difficulty of constructing very large pieces of DNA in the laboratory and highlights some complications that might arise when attempting to transmit DNA-encrypted data to recipients who are a long period of time in the future.

Digital imaging of bone and tooth modification

Digital cameras are capable of producing images of cut marks and other three dimensional subjects comparable to those obtained from the scanning electron microscope (SEM). Until now, the SEM has offered unparalleled depth of field and surface rendition. SEM units are, however, expensive to acquire and maintain, and SEM image production is time-intensive. Furthermore, SEM images lack color and are often incapable of imaging bone modifications because of magnification and chamber size limitations. A digital imaging method for producing extremely high depth of field enlargements of three dimensional, sub-millimeter scale objects circumvents these problems. In our presentation we employ four case studies of hard tissue modification related to: (1) the origins of meat-eating in the human lineage; (2) evidence for cannibalistic behavior among Neanderthals; (3) pre-Columbian evidence of North American dentistry; and (4) the earliest evidence of cranial surgery in North America. Procedures for replica production, image-capture, and image enhancement are provided. The digital images produced are compared to those obtained with the SEM. Image processing software, a crucial component of this method, allows complete control of graphic data, making graphic fraud a larger threat than ever before. Issues in ethics stemming from the application of this technology to scientific analysis are considered.
