Abstract
Dynamical ordering from a disordered plastic flow to an anisotropically ordered smectic flow induced by a dc force has been studied in various many-particle systems, including vortices in type-II superconductors. However, it remains unclear whether the dynamical ordering is a true phase transition because of lack of suitable experimental methods. Here, we study the response of vortex flow to the transverse force using a cross-shaped amorphous Mo[Formula: see text]Ge[Formula: see text] film. From transverse current-voltage (force-velocity) characteristics under various longitudinal currents, we find a change of the transverse response in low voltage (velocity) regions from a nonlinear to linear behavior at a well-defined longitudinal current that marks the dynamical ordering transition. We also find the scaling collapse of the transverse current-voltage curves to a universal scaling function, providing evidence of the second-order transition for the dynamical ordering transition.

Abstract
Dynamics of string-like objects is an important issue in a broad range of physical systems, including vortex lines in superconductors, viscoelastic polymers, and superstrings in elementary particle physics. In noncentrosymmetric magnets, string forms of magnetic skyrmions are present as topological spin objects, and their current-induced dynamics has recently attracted intense interest. We show in the chiral magnet MnSi that the current-induced deformation dynamics of skyrmion strings results in transport response associated with the real-space Berry phase. Prominent nonlinear Hall signals emerge above the threshold current only in the skyrmion phase. We clarify the mechanism for these nonlinear Hall signals by adopting spin density wave picture to describe the moving skyrmion lattice; deformation of skyrmion strings occurs in an asymmetric manner due to the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction, which leads to the nonreciprocal nonlinear Hall response originating from an emergent electromagnetic field. This finding reveals the dynamical nature of string-like objects and consequent transport outcomes in noncentrosymmetric systems.

Abstract
We review the depinning and nonequilibrium phases of collectively interacting particle systems driven over random or periodic substrates. This type of system is relevant to vortices in type-II superconductors, sliding charge density waves, electron crystals, colloids, stripe and pattern forming systems, and skyrmions, and could also have connections to jamming, glassy behaviors, and active matter. These systems are also ideal for exploring the broader issues of characterizing transient and steady state nonequilibrium flow phases as well as nonequilibrium phase transitions between distinct dynamical phases, analogous to phase transitions between different equilibrium states. We discuss the differences between elastic and plastic depinning on random substrates and the different types of nonequilibrium phases which are associated with specific features in the velocity-force curves, fluctuation spectra, scaling relations, and local or global particle ordering. We describe how these quantities can change depending on the dimension, anisotropy, disorder strength, and the presence of hysteresis. Within the moving phase we discuss how there can be a transition from a liquid-like state to dynamically ordered moving crystal, smectic, or nematic states. Systems with periodic or quasiperiodic substrates can have multiple nonequilibrium second or first order transitions in the moving state between chaotic and coherent phases, and can exhibit hysteresis. We also discuss systems with competing repulsive and attractive interactions, which undergo dynamical transitions into stripes and other complex morphologies when driven over random substrates. Throughout this work we highlight open issues and future directions such as absorbing phase transitions, nonequilibrium work relations, inertia, the role of non-dissipative dynamics such as Magnus effects, and how these results could be extended to the broader issues of plasticity in crystals, amorphous solids, and jamming phenomena.

Abstract
We report structural evidence of dynamic reorganization in vortex matter in clean NbSe(2) by joint small-angle neutron scattering and ac susceptibility measurements. The application of oscillatory forces in a transitional region near the order-disorder transition results in robust bulk vortex lattice configurations with an intermediate degree of disorder. These dynamically originated configurations correlate with intermediate pinning responses previously observed, resolving a long-standing debate regarding the origin of such responses.

Abstract
The vortex lattice (VL) in the mixed state of the stannide superconductor Yb3Rh4Sn13 has been studied using small-angle neutron scattering (SANS). The field dependences of the normalized longitudinal and transverse correlation lengths of the VL, ξ(L)/a0 and ξ(T)/a0, reveal two distinct anomalies that are associated with vortex-glass phases below μ0Hl ≈ 700 G and above μ0Hh ∼ 1.7 T (a0 is the intervortex distance). At high fields, around 1.7 T, the longitudinal correlation decreases abruptly with increasing fields indicating a weakening (but not a complete destruction) of the VL due to a phase transition into a glassy phase, below μ0Hc2 (1.8 K) ≈2.5 T. ξ(L)/a0 and ξ(T)/a0, gradually decrease for decreasing fields of strengths less than 1 T and tend towards zero. The shear elastic modulus c66 and the tilting elastic modulus c44 vanish at a critical field μ0Hl ≈ 700 G, providing evidence for a disorder-induced transition into a vortex-glass. A 'ring' of scattered intensity is observed for fields lower than 700 G, i.e. μ0Hc1 = 135 G < μ0H < 700 G. This low-field phenomenon is of different nature than the one observed at high fields, where ξ(L)/a0 but not ξ(T)/a0, decreases abruptly to an intermediate value.

Abstract
The vortex lattice in a Type II superconductor provides a versatile model system to investigate the order-disorder transition in a periodic medium in the presence of random pinning. Here, using scanning tunnelling spectroscopy in a weakly pinned Co(0.0075)NbSe(2) single crystal, we show that the vortex lattice in a 3-dimensional superconductor disorders through successive destruction of positional and orientational order, as the magnetic field is increased across the peak effect. At the onset of the peak effect, the equilibrium quasi-long range ordered state transforms into an orientational glass through the proliferation of dislocations. At a higher field, the dislocations dissociate into isolated disclination giving rise to an amorphous vortex glass. We also show the existence of a variety of additional non-equilibrium metastable states, which can be accessed through different thermomagnetic cycling.

Abstract
We use particle-based simulations to examine the static and driven collective phases of Skyrmions interacting with random quenched disorder. We show that nondissipative effects due to the Magnus term reduce the depinning threshold and strongly affect the Skyrmion motion and the nature of the dynamic phases. The quenched disorder causes the Hall angle to become drive dependent in the moving Skyrmion phase, while different flow regimes produce distinct signatures in the transport curves. For weak disorder, the Skyrmions form a pinned crystal and depin elastically, while for strong disorder the system forms a pinned amorphous state that depins plastically. At high drives the Skyrmions can dynamically reorder into a moving crystal, with the onset of reordering determined by the strength of the Magnus term.

Abstract
We examine driven dislocation assemblies and show that they can exhibit a set of dynamical phases remarkably similar to those of driven systems with quenched disorder such as vortices in superconductors, magnetic domain walls, and charge density wave materials. These phases include pinned-jammed, fluctuating, and dynamically ordered states, and each produces distinct dislocation patterns as well as specific features in the noise fluctuations and transport properties. Our work suggests that many of the results established for systems with quenched disorder undergoing plastic depinning transitions can be applied to dislocation systems, providing a new approach for understanding pattern formation and dynamics in these systems.

Abstract
Nonequilibrium self-organized patterns formed by particles interacting through competing range interaction are driven over a substrate by an external force. We show that, with increasing driving force, the preexisted static patterns evolve into dynamic patterns either via disordered phase or depinned patterns or via the formation of nonequilibrium stripes. Strikingly, the stripes are formed either in the direction of the driving force or in the transverse direction, depending on the pinning strength. The revealed dynamical patterns are summarized in a dynamical phase diagram.

Abstract
The magnetization and anisotropic electrical transport properties have been measured in high quality Cu(0.03)TaS(2) single crystals. A pronounced peak effect has been observed, indicating that high quality and homogeneity are vital to the peak effect. A kink has been observed in the magnetic field, H, dependence of the in-plane resistivity ρ(ab) for H is parallel to c, which corresponds to a transition from activated to diffusive behavior of the vortex liquid phase. In the diffusive regime of the vortex liquid phase, the in-plane resistivity ρ(ab) is proportional to H(0.3), which does not follow the Bardeen-Stephen law for free flux flow. Finally, a simplified vortex phase diagram of Cu(0.03)TaS(2) for H is parallel to c is given.

Abstract
Locked-to-sliding phase transition has been studied in the driven two-dimensional Frenkel-Kontorova model with the square symmetric substrate potential. It is found that as the driving force increases, the system transfers from the locked state to the sliding state where the motion of particles is in the direction different from that of driving force. With the further increase in driving force, at some critical value, the particles start to move in the direction of driving force. These two critical forces, the static friction or depinning force, and the kinetic friction force for which particles move in the direction of driving force have been analyzed for different system parameters. Different scenarios of phase transitions have been examined and dynamical phases are classified. In the case of zero misfit angle, the analytical expressions for static and kinetic friction force have been obtained.

Abstract
The driven state of a well-ordered flux line lattice in a single crystal of 2H-NbSe2 in the time domain has revealed the presence of substantial fluctuations in velocity, with large and distinct time periods ( approximately seconds). A superposition of a periodic drive in the driven vortex lattice causes distinct changes in these fluctuations. We propose that prior to the onset of the peak effect there exists a heretofore unexplored regime of coherent dynamics, with unexpected behavior in velocity fluctuations.

Abstract
We report spontaneous narrow band oscillations in the high field Wigner solid. These oscillations are similar to the recently seen and yet unexplained oscillations in the reentrant integer quantum Hall states. The current-voltage characteristic has a region of negative differential resistance in the current biased setup and it is hysteretic in the voltage biased setup. As a consequence of the unusual breakdown, the oscillations in the Wigner solid are of the relaxation type.

Abstract
We use large scale simulations to study interacting particles in two dimensions in the presence of both an ac drive and quenched disorder. As a function of ac amplitude, there is a crossover from a low drive regime where the colloid positions are highly disordered to a higher ac drive regime where the system dynamically reorders. We examine the coarsening of topological defects formed when the system is quenched from a disordered low ac amplitude state to a high ac amplitude state. When the quench is performed close to the disorder-order crossover, the defect density decays with time as a power law with alpha = 1/4 to 1/3. For deep quenches, in which the ac drive is increased to high values such that the dynamical shaking temperature is strongly reduced, we observe a logarithmic decay of the defect density into a grain boundary dominated state. We find a similar logarithmic decay of defect density in systems containing no pinning. We specifically demonstrate these effects for vortices in thin film superconductors, and discuss implications for dynamical reordering transition studies in these systems.

Abstract
We have probed the effects of transverse variations in pinning strength on charge-density-wave (CDW) structure in NbSe3 by x-ray micro-beam diffraction. In ribbonlike crystals having a large longitudinal step in thickness, the CDW first depins on the thick side of the step, causing rotations of the CDW wave vector. By measuring these rotations as a function of position and electric field, the corresponding shear strains are determined, allowing the CDW's shear modulus to be estimated. These results demonstrate the usefulness of x-ray microdiffraction as a tool in studying collective dynamics in electronic crystals.

Abstract
We present a mode locking (ML) phenomenon of vortex matter observed around the peak effect regime of 2H-NbSe2 pure single crystals. The ML features allow us not only to trace how the shear rigidity of driven vortices persists on approaching the second critical field, but also to demonstrate a dynamic melting transition of driven vortices at a given velocity. We observe the velocity dependent melting signatures in the peak effect regime, which reveal a crossover between the disorder-induced transition at small velocity and the thermally induced transition at large velocity. This uncovers the relationship between the peak effect and the thermal melting.

Abstract
We study the nonlinear dc response of a two-dimensional underdamped system of interacting atoms subject to an isotropic periodic external potential with triangular symmetry. When driving force increases, the system transfers from a disorder locked state to an ordered sliding state corresponding to a moving crystal. By varying the values of the effective elastic constant, damping, and temperature, we found different scenarios and intermediate phases during the ordering transition. For a soft atomic layer, the system passes through a plastic-channel regime that appears as a steady-state regime at higher values of the damping coefficient. For high values of the effective elastic constant, when the atomic layer is stiff, the intermediate plastic phase corresponds to a traffic-jam regime with immobile islands in the sea of running atoms. At a high driving of the stiff layer, a solitonlike elastic flow of atoms has been observed.

Abstract
We study numerically correlation and response functions in nonequilibrium driven vortex lattices with random pinning. From a generalized fluctuation-dissipation relation, we calculate an effective transverse temperature in the fluid moving phase. We find that the effective temperature decreases with increasing driving force and becomes equal to the equilibrium melting temperature when the dynamic transverse freezing occurs. We also discuss how the effective temperature can be measured experimentally from a generalized Kubo formula.

Abstract
We have used high-resolution x-ray scattering, in the presence of an applied direct current, for studying the correlation lengths in the sliding charge-density wave (CDW) state. Transport properties were simultaneously measured in situ during the experiment. We find that, while the transverse correlation is reduced when the CDW moves, the CDW becomes more ordered in the direction of motion. This is the first report of a motional ordering process in a periodic system other than a vortex lattice.

Abstract
We study numerically the evolution of the degree order and mobility of the vortex lattice under steady and oscillating applied forces. We show that the oscillatory motion of vortices can favor an ordered structure, even when the motion of the vortices is plastic when the same force is applied in a constant way. Our results relate the spatial order of the vortex lattice with its mobility, and they are in agreement with recent experiments. We predict that, in oscillating applied forces, the lattice orients with a principal axis perpendicular to the direction of motion.

Abstract
Although crystals are usually quite stable, they are sensitive to a disordered environment: even an infinitesimal amount of impurities can lead to the destruction of crystalline order. The resulting state of matter has been a long-standing puzzle. Until recently it was believed to be an amorphous state in which the crystal would break into 'crystallites'. But a different theory predicts the existence of a novel phase of matter: the so-called Bragg glass, which is a glass and yet nearly as ordered as a perfect crystal. The 'lattice' of vortices that contain magnetic flux in type II superconductors provide a good system to investigate these ideas. Here we show that neutron-diffraction data of the vortex lattice provides unambiguous evidence for a weak, power-law decay of the crystalline order characteristic of a Bragg glass. The theory also predicts accurately the electrical transport properties of superconductors; it naturally explains the observed phase transitions and the dramatic jumps in the critical current associated with the melting of the Bragg glass. Moreover, the model explains experiments as diverse as X-ray scattering in disordered liquid crystals and the conductivity of electronic crystals.

Abstract
We report on experiments investigating the depinning dynamics of a strongly pinned vortex lattice in 2H-NbSe2. We find that the depinning process starts at currents that are well below the critical current of the entire lattice and that it is governed by the formation of contiguous channels of mobile vortices connecting the sample edges. We obtain the formation time of the first channel by monitoring the delayed voltage response to a driving current step and by measuring the ramping rate dependence of the critical current. The subsequent increase in the number of moving vortices is determined from the temporal evolution of the voltage response and the critical current.

Abstract
We report on the degree of order of the vortex solid in YBa2Cu3O7 single crystals observed in ac susceptibility measurements. We show that when vortices are "shaken" by a temporarily symmetric ac field they are driven into an easy-to-move, ordered structure but, on the contrary, when the ac field is temporarily asymmetric, they are driven into a more pinned disordered state. This is characteristic of tearing of the vortex lattice and shows that ordering due to symmetric ac fields is essentially different from an equilibration process or a dynamical crystallization that is expected to occur at high driving currents.

Abstract
Transport studies in a Corbino disk suggest that the Bragg glass phase undergoes a first-order transition into a disordered solid. This transition shows sharp reentrant behavior at low fields. In contrast, in the conventional strip configuration, the phase transition is obscured by the injection of the disordered vortices through the sample edges, which results in the commonly observed vortex instabilities and smearing of the peak effect in NbSe2 crystals. These features are found to be absent in the Corbino geometry in which the circulating vortices do not cross the sample edges.

Abstract
We studied the conduction noise spectrum in the vortex state of a high-temperature superconductor, Bi(2)Sr(2)CaCu(2)O(y), subject to a uniform driving force. Two characteristic features, a broad-band noise (BBN) and a narrow-band noise (NBN), were observed in the vortex-solid phase. The origin of the large BBN was determined to be plastic motion of the vortices, whereas the NBN was found to originate from the washboard modulation of the translational velocity of the driven vortices. We believe this to be the first observation of washboard noise of dc driven vortices in any superconductor.

Abstract
We report on the observation of two types of current driven transitions in metastable vortex lattices. The metastable states, which are missed in usual slow transport measurements, are detected with a fast transport technique in the vortex lattice of undoped 2H-NbSe2. The transitions are seen by following the evolution of these states when driven by a current. At low currents we observe an equilibration transition from a metastable to a stable state, followed by a dynamic crystallization transition at high currents.

Abstract
We report on marked memory effects in the vortex system of twinned YBa2Cu3O7 single crystals observed in ac susceptibility measurements. We show that the vortex system can be trapped in different metastable states with variable degree of order arising in response to different system histories. The pressure exerted by the oscillating ac field assists the vortex system in ordering, locally reducing the critical current density in the penetrated outer zone of the sample. The robustness of the ordered and disordered states together with the spatial profile of the critical current density lead to the observed memory effects.

Abstract
The magnetic flux line lattice in type II superconductors serves as a useful system in which to study condensed matter flow, as its dynamic properties are tunable. Recent studies have shown a number of puzzling phenomena associated with vortex motion, including: low-frequency noise and slow voltage oscillations; a history-dependent dynamic response, and memory of the direction, amplitude duration and frequency of the previously applied current; high vortex mobility for alternating current, but no apparent vortex motion for direct currents; and strong suppression of an a.c. response by small d.c. bias. Taken together, these phenomena are incompatible with current understanding of vortex dynamics. Here we report a generic mechanism that accounts for these observations. Our model, which is derived from investigations of the current distribution across single crystals of NbSe2, is based on a competition between the injection of a disordered vortex phase at the sample edges, and the dynamic annealing of this metastable disorder by the transport current. For an alternating current, only narrow regions near the edges are in the disordered phase, while for d.c. bias, most of the sample is in the disordered phase--preventing vortex motion because of more efficient pinning. The resulting spatial dependence of the disordered vortex system serves as an active memory of the previous history.
