Abstract
Cancer treatment brings about a phenomenon not fully clarified yet, termed chemobrain. Its strong negative impact on patients' well-being makes it a trending topic in current research, interconnecting many disciplines from clinical oncology to neuroscience. Clinical and animal studies have often reported elevated concentrations of proinflammatory cytokines in various types of blood cancers. This inflammatory burst could be the background for chemotherapy-induced cognitive deficit in patients with blood cancers. Cancer environment is a dynamic interacting system. The review puts into close relationship the inflammatory dysbalance and oxidative/nitrosative stress with disruption of the blood-brain barrier (BBB). The BBB breakdown leads to neuroinflammation, followed by neurotoxicity and neurodegeneration. High levels of intracellular reactive oxygen species (ROS) induce the progression of cancer resulting in increased mutagenesis, conversion of protooncogenes to oncogenes, and inactivation of tumor suppression genes to trigger cancer cell growth. These cell alterations may change brain functionality, as well as morphology. Multidrug chemotherapy is not without consequences to healthy tissue and could even be toxic. Specific treatment impacts brain function and morphology, functions of the immune system, and metabolism in a unique mixture. In general, a chemo-drug's effects on cognition in cancer are not direct and/or in-direct, usually a combination of effects is more probable. Last but not least, chemotherapy strongly impacts the immune system and could contribute to BBB disruption. This review points out inflammation as a possible mechanism of brain damage during blood cancers and discusses chemotherapy-induced cognitive impairment.

Abstract
Interleukin-2 (IL-2) and its receptor (IL-2R) are essential in orchestrating immune responses. Their function and expression in the tumor microenvironment make them attractive targets for immunotherapy, leading to the development of IL-2/IL-2R-targeted therapeutic strategies. However, the dynamic interplay between IL-2/IL-2R and various immune cells and their dual roles in promoting immune activation and tolerance presents a complex landscape for clinical exploitation. This review discusses the pivotal roles of IL-2 and IL-2R in tumorigenesis, shedding light on their potential as diagnostic and prognostic markers and their therapeutic manipulation in cancer. It underlines the necessity to balance the anti-tumor activity with regulatory T-cell expansion and evaluates strategies such as dose optimization and selective targeting for enhanced therapeutic effectiveness. The article explores recent advancements in the field, including developing genetically engineered IL-2 variants, combining IL-2/IL-2R-targeted therapies with other cancer treatments, and the potential benefits of a multidimensional approach integrating molecular profiling, immunological analyses, and clinical data. The review concludes that a deeper understanding of IL-2/IL-2R interactions within the tumor microenvironment is crucial for realizing the full potential of IL-2-based therapies, heralding the promise of improved outcomes for cancer patients.

Abstract
CONTEXT Primary adrenal lymphoma (PAL) is difficult to distinguish from other adrenal masses. Soluble interleukin-2 receptor (sIL-2R) is a diagnostic biomarker for nodal non-Hodgkin lymphoma, whose association with PAL is unknown. OBJECTIVE The aim of this study was to determine the diagnostic utility of serum sIL-2R for Patients with PAL. DESIGN Prospective cohort study. SETTINGS AND PARTICIPANTS A total of 118 patients with adrenal masses who were willing to be tested for levels of serum sIL-2R from a tertiary hospital between 2019 and 2021 were included. MAIN OUTCOMES AND MEASURES Serum sIL-2R and lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) levels. RESULTS Patients with PAL had significantly higher sIL-2R levels than those of patients with other adrenal masses with indetermined and benign computed tomography (CT) features (both Ps < 0.001). The LDH levels of patients with PAL were also significantly higher than those of patients with other adrenal masses with indeterminate and benign CT features (both Ps < 0.001). Good discrimination of patients with PAL from other patients (PAL vs other adrenal masses with indeterminate CT features/non-PAL) was achieved with an area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC) of 0.984 (95% CI, 0.95-1)/0.992 (95% CI, 0.975-1.000) using the serum levels of sIL-2R and further improved (AUC = 0.998, 95% CI, 0.994-1.000; AUC = 0.999, 95% CI, 0.996-1.000) after adjusting by LDH category. CONCLUSIONS For the first time, we have identified that serum sIL-2R and LDH category-adjusted sIL-2R levels have good diagnostic performances for PAL.

Abstract
Cancer immunotherapy is a highly successful and rapidly evolving treatment modality that works by augmenting the body’s own immune system. While various immune stimulation strategies such as PD-1/PD-L1 or CTLA-4 checkpoint blockade result in robust responses, even in patients with advanced cancers, the overall response rate is low. While immune checkpoint inhibitors are known to enhance cytotoxic T cells’ antitumor response, current evidence suggests that immune responses independent of cytotoxic T cells, such as Natural Killer (NK) cells, play crucial role in the efficacy of immunotherapeutic interventions. NK cells hold a distinct role in potentiating the innate immune response and activating the adaptive immune system. This review highlights the importance of the early actions of the NK cell response and the pivotal role NK cells hold in priming the immune system and setting the stage for successful response to cancer immunotherapy. Yet, in many patients the NK cell compartment is compromised thus lowering the chances of successful outcomes of many immunotherapies. An overview of mechanisms that can drive NK cell dysfunction and hinder immunotherapy success is provided. Rather than relying on the likely dysfunctional endogenous NK cells to work with immunotherapies, adoptive allogeneic NK cell therapies provide a viable solution to increase response to immunotherapies. This review highlights the advances made in development of NK cell therapeutics for clinical application with evidence supporting their combinatorial application with other immune-oncology approaches to improve outcomes of immunotherapies.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To identify the optimal treatment for rheumatoid arthritis (RA) after the regression of lymphoproliferative disorders (LPDs). METHODS The subjects were 232 patients with RA who developed LPD between 2000 and 2017 at seven hospitals participating in the LPD-WG study. Kaplan-Meier and Cox proportional regression analyses were performed to determine the factors associated with the rate of LPD relapse and the retention of biological disease-modifying antirheumatic drugs (bDMARDs). RESULTS Treatment for RA was resumed in 138 patients after spontaneous regression of LPD after the discontinuation of methotrexate and in 52 patients after chemotherapy for LPD (persistent-LPD). LPD relapses occurred in 23 patients. Not DMARDs use but Hodgkin's lymphoma was identified as a risk factor for LPD relapse. In 88 RA patients treated with bDMARDs [tocilizumab, 39 patients; abatacept 20 patients; tumor necrosis factor inhibitor, 29 patients], the one-year retention rate was 67.8%. The risk factors for discontinuation of bDMARDs were persistent-LPD, non-diffuse large B-cell lymphomas (non-DLBCL), and a high clinical disease activity index (CDAI). Tocilizumab showed the highest retention rate among bDMARDs, particularly in DLBCL. CONCLUSION Although any bDMARD could be used in patients after LPD regression, effectiveness and risk for relapse should be carefully assessed for each LPD subtype.

Impact of serum levels of IL-18 and soluble IL-2 receptor on the clinical outcome of patients with diffuse large B-cell lymphoma treated with R-CHOP regimen. Future Sci OA 2019; 5:FSO414. Abstract
Aim & methods: To assess the impact of pretreatment serum levels of IL-18 and soluble IL-2 receptor (sIL-2R) on the clinical outcome of patients with diffuse large B-cell lymphoma treated with an R-CHOP protocol. Total 73 patients were included. Results: Elevated serum IL-18 (using mean as cutoff) was associated with numerically lower complete remission, and 3-year disease-free survival rates; however, the difference was not statistically significant. Nevertheless, the 3-year overall survival rates were significantly more favorable for the lower serum level group. Correspondingly, the complete remission, 3-year disease-free survival and overall survival rates for patients with low pretreatment sIL-2R levels were significantly better than individuals with higher levels. Conclusion: There is a growing body of evidence supporting the utility of pretreatment serum levels of sIL-2R and IL-18 as prognostic factors in diffuse large B-cell lymphoma patients. Diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL) is the most common subtype of non-Hodgkin lymphomas in Egypt. Since the introduction of rituximab, the utility of International Prognostic Index in DLBCL patients treated in the rituximab era has been questioned. Instead, biologic prognostic factors including cytokines are increasingly being investigated to stratify DLBCL patients. In this prospective single arm Phase II study, there is evidence supporting the utility of pretreatment serum levels of IL-18 and sIL-2R, which can be easily measured in clinical practice, as potential prognostic factors that may add additional information regarding response to treatment and outcome in DLBCL patients and could help stratify poor risk patients for more aggressive treatment.

Abstract
An understanding of interactions within the tumor microenvironment (TME) of classic Hodgkin lymphoma (cHL) has helped pave the way to novel immunotherapies that have enabled dormant and tumor-tolerant immune cells to be reactivated. The immunosuppressive nature of the TME in cHL specifically inhibits the proliferation and activity of natural killer (NK) cells, which contributes to tumor immune-escape mechanisms. This deficiency of NK cells begins at the tumor site and progresses systemically in patients with advanced disease or adverse prognostic factors. Several facets of cHL account for this effect on NK cells. Locally, malignant Reed-Sternberg cells and cells from the TME express ligands for inhibitory receptors on NK cells, including HLA-E, HLA-G, and programmed death-ligand 1. The secretion of chemokines and cytokines, including soluble IL-2 receptor (sCD25), Transforming Growth Factor-β, IL-10, CXCL9, and CXCL10, mediates the systemic immunosuppression. This review also discusses the potential reversibility of quantitative and functional NK cell deficiencies in cHL that are likely to lead to novel treatments.

Abstract
The prognosis of patients with classical Hodgkin lymphoma following chemo- and radiotherapy has been excellent during the last 4 decades. However, the development of secondary malignancies is of major concern. Therefore, the reduction of radiotherapy application is a major objective of ongoing clinical trials. De-escalation of treatment may increase the risk of relapses and thus may lead to reappearance of prognostic factors. Prognostic biomarkers might help to identify patients who are at increased risk of relapse. This review summarizes the current knowledge about potential prognostic biomarkers for patients with classical Hodgkin lymphoma.

Abstract
CONCLUSION Lymph node swelling in the neck is one of the initial symptoms of malignant lymphoma (ML). The present study showed that clinical factors including higher age, higher level of maximum standardized uptake value (SUV-max) of positron-emission tomography, elevated serum lactate dehydrogenase (LDH), and elevated serum soluble interleukin-2 receptor (sIL-2R) were all useful indicators to suggest the diagnosis of ML, so may be helpful in the selection of patients for lymph node dissection. OBJECTIVE Lymph node dissection is essential for the diagnosis of ML. The factors important for the diagnosis of ML were investigated, to establish surgical indicators. METHODS Preoperative data including age, number and side of lymph nodes, SUV-max, serum LDH, serum sIL-2R, and size of lymph nodes were obtained from medical records. The cut-off level for each factor was calculated using the Youden Index for logistic regression analysis. RESULTS Multivariate logistic regression analysis showed that the following factors were associated with ML: higher age (≥ 53 years), higher level of SUV-max (≥ 9.0), elevated serum LDH (≥ 203 U/L), elevated serum sIL-2R (≥ 2590 U/ml), with odds ratios of 3.7, 4.9, 3.7, and 11.9, respectively.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Establish a correlation between serum soluble interleukin 2 receptor (sIL-2R) levels and clinical characteristics of follicular lymphoma patients with gastrointestinal involvement. DESIGN AND METHODS Patients (n=44) presenting with follicular lymphoma lesions in the gastrointestinal tract were enrolled into the study and divided into 2 groups based on sIL-2R levels (normal vs. elevated). Clinical characteristics were also analyzed between groups. RESULTS Patients with elevated sIL-2R levels likely had systemic follicular lymphoma involvement (Ann Arbor system staging IIIES/IV or Lugano system staging II-2/IV), involvement of 5 or more nodal areas, and presentation of bulky tumors in the gastrointestinal tract. These patients also presented a high Follicular Lymphoma International Prognostic Index (FLIPI) score, suggestive of poor prognosis. No differences were found among other clinical characteristics including sex, age at lymphoma diagnosis, histological grade, LDH levels, bone marrow involvement, hemoglobin levels, and identification of tracer accumulation in gastrointestinal lesions by positron-emission tomography scanning. CONCLUSIONS sIL-2R levels can be used as an independent prognostic index in follicular lymphoma patients based on the correlation with the FLIPI score. Moreover, since high sIL-2R levels were associated with a large tumor bulk, sIL-2R may serve as a good indicator for monitoring disease relapse or progression.

Abstract
PURPOSE Lymph node enlargement in the neck is a common presentation of malignant lymphoma (ML) and requires tissue sampling for accurate diagnosis. Although delayed diagnosis may be critical for some patients, unnecessary biopsy should be avoided wherever possible. This study examined the process for determining the necessity to perform a biopsy and evaluated the value of an open biopsy as a diagnostic tool to enable definite subclassification of the disease. METHODS The subjects included 20 patients with suspected ML who underwent cervical lymph node extirpation at Okayama Saiseikai general hospital between 2007 and 2010. The decision to perform a biopsy was made based on the results of sonographic evaluation, fine needle aspiration cytology (FNAC), and serum levels of lactate dehydrase (LDH) and soluble interleukin-2 receptor (sIL-2r). RESULTS The diagnosis was ML in 15 patients (75%), Castleman's disease in 1 (5%), and benign lymphadenopathy in 4 (20%). CONCLUSIONS A lymph node biopsy remains the gold standard for the diagnostic evaluation of ML. Sonographic evaluation combined with serum levels of LDH and sIL-2r is useful in determining the need for biopsy. Many of the cases of ML where it was difficult to determine whether a biopsy should be performed were relatively low grade and critical conditions could be avoided by close observation of the patient.

Abstract
Serum concentration of soluble interleukin-2 receptor (sIL-2R) predicts the clinical outcome of patients with aggressive non-Hodgkin's lymphoma treated with the cyclophosphamide, doxorubicin, vincristine, and prednisolone (CHOP) regimen without rituximab. In the present study, we aim to re-assess the prognostic significance of serum sIL-2R for diffuse large B cell lymphoma (DLBCL) patients treated with CHOP plus rituximab and to assess sIL-2R with subtype of DLBCL, such as GCB type and non-GCB type. Two hundred and thirty-three patients with DLBCL were enrolled between December 2002 and March 2008. To evaluate serum levels of sIL-2R, venous blood samples were drawn from patients immediately before initiation of treatment. Serum sIL-2R was determined by sandwich enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. The 5-year overall survival (OS) rates for patients with sIL-2R levels of ≥2,000 (110 cases) and <2,000 U/mL (123 cases) were 54.2% and 89.0% (P < 0.0001), respectively. Multivariate analysis using the proportional-hazards model revealed that serum sIL-2R (P = 0.0099) and extranodal involvement sites (P = 0.0392) were independent prognostic factors for OS and that clinical stage (P = 0.0168), performance status (P = 0.0181), sIL-2R (P = 0.0232), and LDH (P = 0.0316) were independent prognostic factors for progression-free survival in sIL-2R and every factor of the International Prognostic Index. Serum sIL-2R might be a useful prognostic factor for DLBCL patients in the rituximab era.

Abstract
When interleukin-2 (IL-2) receptor γ-chain (γ(C))-sharing cytokine receptors on T cells bind their specific ligands (IL-2, -4, -7, -9, -15 or -21), they initiate a variety of cell signals that promote survival, differentiation or antiviral or antitumor cytolytic functions. Although expression of the γ(C) is constitutive across T-cell subsets, the varying expression of other receptor complex components can regulate cytokine signalling and function. Impaired γ(C) cytokine activity in HIV infection, and the role of γ(C) cytokines in CD8(+) T-cell function and homeostasis, implicates these molecules among potential contributors to the observed decline of cytolytic activity (CTL) in HIV disease. In particular, this review will be highlighting information about the IL-7 receptor (IL-7R) complex, which is composed of the γ(C) and the IL-7Rα (CD127) chains. There has been an abundance of HIV-related CD127 research and its important role in CD8(+) T-cell survival and function. The expression of CD127 undergoes dramatic changes throughout the course of T-cell responses in HIV infection. The expression of CD127 is significantly decreased in progressive HIV disease, whereas effective antiretroviral therapy results in its recovery. Observations of impaired IL-7 activity in HIV(+) individuals have suggested that CD127 has an important role in HIV immunopathogenesis. In addition, a soluble form of CD127 (sCD127) is upregulated in the plasma of HIV(+) individuals. Hence, CD127 is being increasingly considered as a marker of disease prognosis, and related information may provide insight into understanding the expression and role of other γ(C) receptors in HIV disease and contribute to the development of novel cytokine-based therapeutics.

Abstract
The authors report on the case of a 64-year-old man with solitary intradural extramedullary non-Hodgkin lymphoma of the cervical spine. The lesion mimicked the appearance of meningioma on MR imaging. Positron emission tomography showed increased accumulation of fluorine-18-labeled fluorodeoxyglucose only in the cervical lesion. Serum levels of C-reactive protein and soluble interleukin-2 receptor were mildly elevated. At surgery, the intradural tumor in the subarachnoid space was totally extirpated. Based on histopathological findings, diffuse, large B-cell type non-Hodgkin lymphoma was diagnosed. Postoperatively, the patient was treated with 2 courses of chemotherapy by intrathecal injection of methotrexate, cytarabine, and prednisolone and 4 courses of intravenous rituximab, an antibody binding to CD20 on the surface of B cells. All preoperative symptoms completely resolved after surgery. Two years postoperatively, the patient was faring well with no evidence of local recurrence or new lesions at any other site. To the best of the authors' knowledge, this case is the first reported instance of solitary intradural extramedullary non-Hodgkin lymphoma of the cervical spine.

Abstract
Background IL-7 is an essential cytokine in T-cell development and homeostasis. It binds to the IL-7R receptor, a complex of the IL-7Rα (CD127) and common γ (CD132) chains. There is significant interest in evaluating the expression of CD127 on human T-cells as it often decreased in medical conditions leading to lymphopenia. Previous reports showed the usefulness of CD127 as a prognostic marker in viral infections such as HIV, CMV, EBV and HCV. A soluble CD127 (sCD127) is released in plasma and may contribute to disease pathogenesis through its control on IL-7 activities. Measuring sCD127 is important to define its role and may complement existing markers used in lymphopenic disease management. We describe a new quantitative assay for the measurement of sCD127 in plasma and report sCD127 concentrations in healthy adults. Methodology/Principal Findings We developed a quantitative bead-based sCD127 capture assay. Polyclonal CD127-specific antibodies were chosen for capture and a biotinylated monoclonal anti-CD127 antibody was selected for detection. The assay can detect native sCD127 and recombinant sCD127 which served as the calibrator. The analytical performance of the assay was characterized and the concentration and stability of plasma sCD127 in healthy adults was determined. The assay's range was 3.2–1000 ng/mL. The concentration of plasma sCD127 was 164±104 ng/mL with over a log variation between subjects. Individual sCD127 concentrations remained stable when measured serially during a period of up to one year. Conclusions/Significance This is the first report on the quantification of plasma sCD127 in a population of healthy adults. Soluble CD127 plasma concentrations remained stable over time in a given individual and sCD127 immunoreactivity was resistant to repeated freeze-thaw cycles. This quantitative sCD127 assay is a valuable tool for defining the potential role of sCD127 in lymphopenic diseases.

Abstract
Cancer growth and development is associated with the stimulation of the innate immune system, including enhanced interleukin 2 receptor (IL-2R) expression in immune cells and its shedding into the circulation in a soluble form of sIL-2Ralpha. In most haematological malignancies, including different types of leukaemias and lymphomas, sIL-2Ralpha has been found to be released directly from the surface of neoplastic cells thus reflecting the tumour bulk, turnover and activity. Several studies have proved that not only lymphoid cancer cells, but also some non-lymphoid cancer cells, express IL-2R on their surface. They include malignant melanoma and carcinomas of the kidney, head and neck, oesophagus and lung. It is suggested that in most malignant solid tumours, elevated levels of sIL-2Ralpha are likely to be the product of normal peripheral mononuclear cells activated in response to the neoplasm's growth or that they are released from activated lymphoid cells infiltrating neoplastic tissues. This latter hypothesis has been proved by discovering the high expression of CD25 on the cell surface of most of these cells. Although the precise source and biological role of sIL-2Ralpha has not been clarified definitively, pretreatment serum levels of sIL-2Ralpha have been shown to reflect the activity, advancement and biological aggressiveness of many types of cancer in adults and children as well as to correlate with prognosis and overall survival. The possibility of enriching the diagnostic tools of oncologists with a new biochemical marker of activity of neoplasms resulted in numerous studies and reports concerning the clinical usefulness of sIL-2Ralpha measurements in adult and, less frequently, in paediatric malignancies. This article presents the actual knowledge concerning the structure, source and biological function of sIL-2Ralpha in patients with haematological and non-haematological malignancies. The authors review the published data on clinical applicability of soluble IL-2Ralpha determination in terms of diagnostics, prognosis and treatment monitoring of particular types of malignant disorders both in adults and in children. They also provide an insight into the clinical usefulness of sLL-2Ralpha-blocking antibodies in patients with cancer, and in those who reject organ transplants, develop graft-versus-host disease after allogeneic bone marrow transplantation and are affected with autoimmune disorders.

Abstract
Wilms' tumour (WT) and soft tissue sarcomas (SA) in children lack reliable biochemical markers. This study was carried out to determine the clinical significance of serum soluble interleukin-2 receptor alpha (sIL-2Ralpha) in the diagnostics and treatment monitoring of children with WT and SA. The study included 48 children: ten with WT, eight with SA and 30 healthy controls. The sIL-2Ralpha levels (ELISA) and rates of elevated sIL-2Ralpha values were estimated prospectively at diagnosis and in complete remission during treatment and after therapy. As the dependence on age was determined, the levels of sIL-2Ralpha were expressed as multiplications of the upper value of the normal range for a particular age ( xN). Median pretreatment levels of sIL-2Ralpha in patients exceeded those of healthy controls (1.79 xN for WT and 1.53 for SA vs. 0.61 for controls; p < 0.001) as did the rates of elevated sIL-2Ralpha values (80% of WTand 87.5% of SA patients vs. 0% of controls). Good response to therapy was paralleled by a significant decline of pretreatment sIL-2Ralpha levels and its elevated rates. Thus, sIL-2Ralpha determination may be of some value in the diagnostics and treatment monitoring of childhood WT and SA.

Abstract
PURPOSE The aim of the present study was to assess the prognostic significance of serum soluble interleukin-2 receptor (sIL-2R) in aggressive non-Hodgkin's lymphoma (NHL). METHODS One hundred and thirteen consecutive patients with previously untreated aggressive NHL (diffuse large B-cell lymphoma, 96; peripheral T-cell lymphoma, 17) prospectively participated in this study between 1995 and 2001. The patients were treated with 6-8 cycles of a CHOP or THP (pirarubicin)-COP regimen. RESULTS A high serum sIL-2R level (2,000 U/ml and over) at onset was associated with a low complete remission rate. Patients with high sIL-2R had significantly lower survival rates (5-year, 24%) than those with low sIL-2R (under 2,000 U/ml) (74%) (P<0.01). Multivariate analysis employing sIL-2R levels and conventional prognostic factors demonstrated that high sIL-2R, presence of B-symptoms, and advanced age (60 years and older) were significantly unfavorable variables for overall survival. In addition, we attempted to use sIL-2R in combination with the International Prognostic Index (IPI). The patients in the high (H) risk group and those with high sIL-2R in the low-intermediate (LI)/high-intermediate (HI) risk group had significantly lower survival rates than the patients in the low (L) risk group and those with low sIL-2R in the LI/HI risk group (P<0.001). CONCLUSION The results suggest that a high serum sIL-2R level predicts a poor prognosis in aggressive NHL and may be a useful biomarker for selecting appropriate treatment when used in combination with the IPI.

Abstract
Currently head and neck squamous cell-carcinomas are staged clinically, though this is not ideal. We did a multivariate prospective study of 234 patients with head and neck squamous-cell carcinoma and showed that high serum concentrations of sIL-2Ralpha at diagnosis were highly correlated with a shorter survival (p<0.0001). In addition, patients who had low serum sIL-2Ralpha concentrations at diagnosis were less likely to develop distant metastasis during the 36 months follow up compared with the group with high serum sIL-2Ralpha concentrations (p<0.001). These findings suggest that serum sIL-2Ralpha could be considered as an independent serum biomarker in head and neck cancer patients.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The International Prognostic Score (IPS) identifies seven independent factors predicting progression-free and overall survival in advanced stage Hodgkin's disease (HD). The IPS is also applicable in limited disease. However, the IPS does not identify patients with a very poor prognosis. The aim of this study was to define biological markers which may add to the IPS in predicting outcome. PATIENTS AND METHODS One hundred forty-five patients (> 15 years) with HD of all stages and histopathology subgroups were included. In addition to factors included in the IPS, serum levels of CRP, sCD4, sCD8, sCD25, sCD30, sCD54, interleukin (IL)-10, beta2-microglobulin and thymidine kinase were analysed. RESULTS The strongest predictors of a poor cause-specific survival (CSS) in univariate analyses were: increased serum levels of IL-10, sCD30 and CRP, anaemia, low levels of albumin (P < 0.001); stage IV (P = 0.003), age > or = 45 years (P = 0.006), increased serum levels of sCD25 (P = 0.010), low lymphocyte counts (P = 0.020). Serum IL-10 added prognostic information to that achieved by the IPS: patients with a high score and increased serum IL-10 had a very poor outcome with a five-year CSS of 38%. Patients with increased serum levels of sCD30 and a high score also had a poor outcome with a five-year CSS of 54%. CONCLUSION Serum levels of IL-10 and sCD30 may add to IPS in prediction of outcome in HD, and should be validated in large, prospective studies.

Abstract
The levels of serum soluble interleukin-2 receptor (sIL-2R) of 36 patients with ovarian cancer, 34 with benign gynecological tumors and 31 blood donors were measured by ELISA. Compared to those of benign and normal controls, serum levels of sIL-2R in patients with ovarian cancer elevated significantly (P < 0.01). Serum sIL-2R levels were likely related to types, clinical stage or histological grading of ovarian cancer. We were led to conclude that serum sIL-2R level may reflect the status of the immune system and the disease severity in patients with ovarian cancer. Its value as a marker for monitoring treatment and prognosis needs further studies.

Abstract
Both topics discussed in this review, prognostic factors and short-course regimens for Hodgkin's disease, have been the focus of recent research with the goal of developing tools and treatments that will result in the highest cure rates with the least long-term sequelae. A new "prognostic score" for advanced-stage Hodgkin's disease and several potential prognostic factors, including soluble CD30, soluble interleukin-2 receptor, activated cytotoxic T-lymphocytes, and Epstein-Barr virus, are discussed. Preliminary reports of short-course chemotherapy regimens with and without radiotherapy for all stages of Hodgkin's disease are summarized.
