Peak effect versus skating in high-temperature nanofriction

Depinning and nonequilibrium dynamic phases of particle assemblies driven over random and ordered substrates: a review

We review the depinning and nonequilibrium phases of collectively interacting particle systems driven over random or periodic substrates. This type of system is relevant to vortices in type-II superconductors, sliding charge density waves, electron crystals, colloids, stripe and pattern forming systems, and skyrmions, and could also have connections to jamming, glassy behaviors, and active matter. These systems are also ideal for exploring the broader issues of characterizing transient and steady state nonequilibrium flow phases as well as nonequilibrium phase transitions between distinct dynamical phases, analogous to phase transitions between different equilibrium states. We discuss the differences between elastic and plastic depinning on random substrates and the different types of nonequilibrium phases which are associated with specific features in the velocity-force curves, fluctuation spectra, scaling relations, and local or global particle ordering. We describe how these quantities can change depending on the dimension, anisotropy, disorder strength, and the presence of hysteresis. Within the moving phase we discuss how there can be a transition from a liquid-like state to dynamically ordered moving crystal, smectic, or nematic states. Systems with periodic or quasiperiodic substrates can have multiple nonequilibrium second or first order transitions in the moving state between chaotic and coherent phases, and can exhibit hysteresis. We also discuss systems with competing repulsive and attractive interactions, which undergo dynamical transitions into stripes and other complex morphologies when driven over random substrates. Throughout this work we highlight open issues and future directions such as absorbing phase transitions, nonequilibrium work relations, inertia, the role of non-dissipative dynamics such as Magnus effects, and how these results could be extended to the broader issues of plasticity in crystals, amorphous solids, and jamming phenomena.

Friction and nonlinear dynamics

The nonlinear dynamics associated with sliding friction forms a broad interdisciplinary research field that involves complex dynamical processes and patterns covering a broad range of time and length scales. Progress in experimental techniques and computational resources has stimulated the development of more refined and accurate mathematical and numerical models, capable of capturing many of the essentially nonlinear phenomena involved in friction.

Nanotribology at high temperatures

Recent molecular dynamics simulation results have increased conceptual understanding of the grazing and the ploughing friction at elevated temperatures, particularly near the substrate's melting point. In this commentary we address a major constraint concerning its experimental verification.

Temperature control in molecular dynamic simulations of non-equilibrium processes

Thermostats are often used in various condensed matter problems, e.g. when a biological molecule undergoes a transformation in a solution, a crystal surface is irradiated with energetic particles, a crack propagates in a solid upon applied stress, two surfaces slide with respect to each other, an excited local phonon dissipates its energy into a crystal bulk, and so on. In all of these problems, as well as in many others, there is an energy transfer between different local parts of the entire system kept at a constant temperature. Very often, when modelling such processes using molecular dynamics simulations, thermostatting is done using strictly equilibrium approaches serving to describe the NVT ensemble. In this paper we critically discuss the applicability of such approaches to non-equilibrium problems, including those mentioned above, and stress that the correct temperature control can only be achieved if the method is based on the generalized Langevin equation (GLE). Specifically, we emphasize that a meaningful compromise between computational efficiency and a physically appropriate implementation of the NVT thermostat can be achieved, at least for solid state and surface problems, if the so-called stochastic boundary conditions (SBC), recently derived from the GLE (Kantorovich and Rompotis 2008 Phys. Rev. B 78 094305), are used. For SBC, the Langevin thermostat is only applied to the outer part of the simulated fragment of the entire system which borders the surrounding environment (not considered explicitly) serving as a heat bath. This point is illustrated by comparing the performance of the SBC and some of the equilibrium thermostats in two problems: (i) irradiation of the Si(001) surface with an energetic CaF(2) molecule using an ab initio density functional theory based method, and (ii) the tribology of two amorphous SiO(2) surfaces coated with self-assembled monolayers of methyl-terminated hydrocarbon alkoxylsilane molecules using a classical atomistic force field. We discuss the differences in behaviour of these systems due to applied thermostatting, and show that in some cases a qualitatively different physical behaviour of the simulated system can be obtained if an equilibrium thermostat is used.

Tribo-induced melting transition at a sliding asperity contact

Observation of a tribo-induced transition from solid to liquidlike behavior is reported for a scanning tunneling microscope tip in sliding contact with an indium electrode of a quartz crystal microbalance (QCM). In particular, at a sufficiently high asperity sliding speed (about 1 m/s) and/or sample temperature, a change in the contact mechanics is observed that is consistent with melting in terms of both the QCM response and an energy analysis. The results confirm that the surface, rather than bulk, melting point temperature is the more relevant quantity for tribological considerations.

Disordering transitions and peak effect in polydisperse particle systems

We show numerically that in a binary system of Yukawa particles, a dispersity-driven disordering transition occurs. In the presence of quenched disorder this disordering transition coincides with a marked increase in the depinning threshold, known as a peak effect. We find that the addition of poorly pinned particles can increase the overall pinning in the sample by increasing the amount of topological disorder present. If the quenched disorder is strong enough to create a significant amount of topological disorder in the monodisperse system, addition of a poorly pinned species generates further disorder but does not produce a peak in the depinning force. Our results indicate that for binary mixtures, optimal pinning occurs for topological defect fraction densities from 0.2 to 0.25. For defect densities below this range, the system retains orientational order. We determine the effect of the pinning density, strength, and radius on the depinning peak and find that the peak effect is more pronounced in weakly pinning systems.
