Tunable and enhanced light emission in hybrid WS2-optical-fiber-nanowire structures

Enhanced second harmonic generation by an atomically thin MoS2 sheet attached to a resonant metasurface

Two-dimensional transition metal dichalcogenides have shown large second-order nonlinear responses due to their broken crystal inversion symmetry. However, their nonlinear interaction with light is restricted to an atomically thin layer. Placing a sheet of transition metal dichalcogenides on a resonant metasurface enhances the field interacting with the nonlinear material thus compensating for this shortcoming. But, it remains a challenge to tune resonances such, that they coincide with fundamental and second harmonic frequencies simultaneously. Here we demonstrate two independent methods to achieve that goal and numerically illustrate our findings for a MoS2 layer combined with silicon nitride photonic crystals. We numerically demonstrate 20-fold and 170-fold enhancement of second-harmonic generation compared with a design based on a single resonant structure. Although we focus on that specific configuration our approach can likewise be applied to other dielectrics combined with highly nonlinear 2D materials.

Advancement in Biosensor Technologies of 2D MaterialIntegrated with Cellulose-Physical Properties

This review paper provides an in-depth analysis of recent advancements in integrating two-dimensional (2D) materials with cellulose to enhance biosensing technology. The incorporation of 2D materials such as graphene and transition metal dichalcogenides, along with nanocellulose, improves the sensitivity, stability, and flexibility of biosensors. Practical applications of these advanced biosensors are explored in fields like medical diagnostics and environmental monitoring. This innovative approach is driving research opportunities and expanding the possibilities for diverse applications in this rapidly evolving field.

Functionalizing nanophotonic structures with 2D van der Waals materials

The integration of two-dimensional (2D) van der Waals materials with nanostructures has triggered a wide spectrum of optical and optoelectronic applications. Photonic structures of conventional materials typically lack efficient reconfigurability or multifunctionality. Atomically thin 2D materials can thus generate new functionality and reconfigurability for a well-established library of photonic structures such as integrated waveguides, optical fibers, photonic crystals, and metasurfaces, to name a few. Meanwhile, the interaction between light and van der Waals materials can be drastically enhanced as well by leveraging micro-cavities or resonators with high optical confinement. The unique van der Waals surfaces of the 2D materials enable handiness in transfer and mixing with various prefabricated photonic templates with high degrees of freedom, functionalizing as the optical gain, modulation, sensing, or plasmonic media for diverse applications. Here, we review recent advances in synergizing 2D materials to nanophotonic structures for prototyping novel functionality or performance enhancements. Challenges in scalable 2D materials preparations and transfer, as well as emerging opportunities in integrating van der Waals building blocks beyond 2D materials are also discussed.

Two-dimensional semiconducting SnP2Se6 with giant second-harmonic-generation for monolithic on-chip electronic-photonic integration

Two-dimensional (2D) layered semiconductors with nonlinear optical (NLO) properties hold great promise to address the growing demand of multifunction integration in electronic-photonic integrated circuits (EPICs). However, electronic-photonic co-design with 2D NLO semiconductors for on-chip telecommunication is limited by their essential shortcomings in terms of unsatisfactory optoelectronic properties, odd-even layer-dependent NLO activity and low NLO susceptibility in telecom band. Here we report the synthesis of 2D SnP₂Se₆, a van der Waals NLO semiconductor exhibiting strong odd-even layer-independent second harmonic generation (SHG) activity at 1550 nm and pronounced photosensitivity under visible light. The combination of 2D SnP₂Se₆ with a SiN photonic platform enables the chip-level multifunction integration for EPICs. The hybrid device not only features efficient on-chip SHG process for optical modulation, but also allows the telecom-band photodetection relying on the upconversion of wavelength from 1560 to 780 nm. Our finding offers alternative opportunities for the collaborative design of EPICs.

Suspended-core fiber with embedded GaSe nanosheets for second harmonic generation

We report an all-fiber scheme for the second harmonic generation (SHG) by embedding gallium selenide (GaSe) nanosheets into a suspended-core fiber (SCF). Based on modes analysis and theoretical calculations, the phase-matching modes from multiple optional modes in the SHG process and the optimal SCF length are determined by calculating the effective refractive index and balancing the SHG growth and transmission loss. Due to the long-distance interaction between pumped fundamental mode and GaSe nanosheets around the suspended core, an SHG signal is observed under a milliwatt-level pump light, and exhibits a quadratic growth with the increased pump power. The SHG process is also realized in a broad wavelength range by varying the pump in the range of 1420∼1700 nm. The SCF with the large air cladding and suspended core as an excellent platform can therefore be employed to integrate low-dimensional nonlinear materials, which holds great promise for the applications of all-fiber structures in new light source generating, signal processing and fiber sensing.

Optical microfibers integrated with evanescent field triggered self-growing polymer nanofilms

Hybrid optical fibers have been widely investigated in different architectures to build integrated fiber photonic devices and achieve various applications. Here we proposed and fabricated hybrid microfiber waveguides with self-growing polymer nanofilms on the surfaces of microfibers triggered by evanescent field of light for the first time. We have demonstrated the polymer nanofilm of ∼50 nm can be grown on the microfiber with length up to 15 mm. In addition, the roughness of nanofilm can be optimized by controlling the triggering laser power and exposure duration, and the total transmission loss of the fabricated hybrid microfiber is less than 2 dB within a wide wavelength range. The hybrid polymer nanofilm microfiber waveguides have been characterized and their relative humidity (RH) responses have also been tested, indicating a potential for RH sensing. Our fabrication method may also be extended to construct the hybrid microfibers with different functional photopolymer materials.

Polarization-Dependent Purcell Enhancement on a Two-Dimensional h-BN/WS2 Light Emitter with a Dielectric Plasmonic Nanocavity

Integrating two-dimensional (2D) transition-metal dichalcogenides (TMDCs) into dielectric plasmonic nanostructures enables the miniaturization of on-chip nanophotonic devices. Here we report on a high-quality light emitter based on the newly designed 2D h-BN/WS₂ heterostructure integrated with an array of TiO₂ nanostripes. Different from a traditional strongly coupled system such as the TMDCs/metallic plasmonic nanostructure, we first employ dielectric nanocavities and achieve a Purcell enhancement on the nanoscale at room temperature. Furthermore, we demonstrate that the light emission strength can be effectively controlled by tuning the polarization configuration. Such a polarization dependence meanwhile could be proof of the resonant energy transfer theory of dipole-dipole coupling between TMDCs and a dielectric nanostructure. This work gains experimental and simulated insights into modified spontaneous emission with dielectric nanoplasmonic platforms, presenting a promising route toward practical applications of 2D semiconducting photonic emitters on a silica-based chip.

Silicon nitride waveguides with directly grown WS2 for efficient second-harmonic generation

Different functions can be directly realized by silicon (Si) in integrated electronic circuits. Although Si and silicon nitride (Si₃N₄) photonics have shown great potential in integrated optoelectronic devices, different functions, such as light generation, transparency for guided light, and light detection, cannot be simultaneously achieved only by Si or Si₃N₄. Second-order nonlinearity is another optical property they do not possess due to their centrosymmetric properties. Several kinds of 2D materials emerged recently and were transferred to specified photonic devices aimed at improving their nonlinear performance. However, the transferring methods are time-consuming, unable to achieve large-scale production, and will inevitably cause materials damage and introduce impurities at the interface. Herein, we demonstrate the direct growth of large-area homogeneous monolayer WS₂via a physical vapor deposition method onto Si₃N₄ waveguides. The WS₂ growth can be controlled mainly along the Si₃N₄ waveguides and the waveguides show an obvious enhancement of second-harmonic generation with the elongated WS₂ coverage. The direct growth of WS₂ endows Si₃N₄ integrated photonics with new nonlinear optical properties. As an alternative method of transferring 2D materials, the method we present here is compatible with large-scale integrated photonic fabrication, which lays the foundation for on-chip integrated optical fabrication and applications.

Trion dynamics and charge photogeneration in MoS2 nanosheets prepared by liquid phase exfoliation

Since excitonic quasiparticles, including excitons, trions and charges, have a great influence on the photoelectric characteristics of two-dimensional (2D) transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs), systematic explorations of the trion dynamics and charge photogeneration in 2D TMDs are important for their future optoelectronic applications. Here, broadband femtosecond transient absorption spectroscopic experiments are performed first to investigate the peak shifting and broadening kinetics in MoS₂ nanosheets in solution prepared by liquid phase exfoliation (LPE-MoS₂, ∼9 layers, 9L), which reveal that the binding energies for the A-, B-, and C-exciton states are ∼77 meV, ∼76 meV, and -70 meV (the energy difference between free charges and excitons; the negative sign for C-excitons means a spontaneous dissociation nature in band-nesting regions), respectively. Then, the trion dynamics and charge photogeneration in LPE-MoS₂ nanosheets have been studied in detail, demonstrating that they are comparable to those in chemical vapor deposition grown MoS₂ films (1L-, 3L- and 7L-MoS₂). These experimental results suggest that LPE-TMD nanosheets also have the potential for use in charge-related optoelectronic devices based on 2D TMDs.

A High-Efficiency Wavelength-Tunable Monolayer LED with Hybrid Continuous-Pulsed Injection

High-efficiency and wavelength-tunable light-emitting diode (LED) devices will play an important role in future advanced optoelectronic systems. Traditional semiconductor LED devices typically have a fixed emission wavelength that is determined by the energy of the emission states. Here, a novel high-efficiency and wavelength-tunable monolayer WS₂ LED device, which operates in the hybrid mode of continuous-pulsed injection, is developed. This hybrid injection enables highly enhanced emission efficiency (>20 times) and effective size of emission area (>5 times) at room temperature. The emission wavelength of the WS₂ monolayer LED device can be tuned over more than 40 nm by driving AC voltages, from exciton emission to trion emission, and further to defect emission. The quantum efficiency of defect electroluminescence (EL) emission is measured to be more than 24.5 times larger than that from free exciton and trion EL emission. The separate carrier injection in the LED also demonstrates advantages in allowing defect species to be visualized and distinguished in real space. Those defects are assigned to be negatively charged defects. The results open a new route to develop high-performance and wavelength-tunable LED devices for future advanced optoelectronic applications.

Silica optical fiber integrated with two-dimensional materials: towards opto-electro-mechanical technology

In recent years, the integration of graphene and related two-dimensional (2D) materials in optical fibers have stimulated significant advances in all-fiber photonics and optoelectronics. The conventional passive silica fiber devices with 2D materials are empowered for enhancing light-matter interactions and are applied for manipulating light beams in respect of their polarization, phase, intensity and frequency, and even realizing the active photo-electric conversion and electro-optic modulation, which paves a new route to the integrated multifunctional all-fiber optoelectronic system. This article reviews the fast-progress field of hybrid 2D-materials-optical-fiber for the opto-electro-mechanical devices. The challenges and opportunities in this field for future development are discussed.

Continuous-wave pumped frequency upconversions in an InSe-integrated microfiber

We report the achievement of continuous-wave (CW)-pumped second-harmonic generation (SHG) and sum frequency generation (SFG) in a layered indium selenide (InSe)-integrated microfiber. As a result of the strong interaction between the InSe nanosheets and the evanescent field, the second-order nonlinear processes are greatly enhanced in the InSe-integrated microfiber pumped by a few milliwatt CW lasers. The experimental results reveal that the intensities of SHG and SFG are quadratic and linear dependencies with the incident pump power, respectively, which is consistent with theoretical predictions. Additionally, the SHG intensity is strongly polarization-dependent on the nonaxisymmetrical distribution of the InSe nanosheets around the microfiber, providing the possibility of the SHG-polarized manipulation. The proposed device has the potential to be integrable into all-fiber systems for nonlinear applications.

Optical fibres with embedded two-dimensional materials for ultrahigh nonlinearity

Nonlinear optical fibres have been employed for a vast number of applications, including optical frequency conversion, ultrafast laser and optical communication^1-4. In current manufacturing technologies, nonlinearity is realized by the injection of nonlinear materials into fibres^5-7 or the fabrication of microstructured fibres^8-10. Both strategies, however, suffer from either low optical nonlinearity or poor design flexibility. Here, we report the direct growth of MoS₂, a highly nonlinear two-dimensional material¹¹, onto the internal walls of a SiO₂ optical fibre. This growth is realized via a two-step chemical vapour deposition method, where a solid precursor is pre-deposited to guarantee a homogeneous feedstock before achieving uniform two-dimensional material growth along the entire fibre walls. By using the as-fabricated 25-cm-long fibre, both second- and third-harmonic generation could be enhanced by ~300 times compared with monolayer MoS₂/silica. Propagation losses remain at ~0.1 dB cm^-1 for a wide frequency range. In addition, we demonstrate an all-fibre mode-locked laser (~6 mW output, ~500 fs pulse width and ~41 MHz repetition rate) by integrating the two-dimensional-material-embedded optical fibre as a saturable absorber. Initial tests show that our fabrication strategy is amenable to other transition metal dichalcogenides, making these embedded fibres versatile for several all-fibre nonlinear optics and optoelectronics applications.

Strain engineering of 2D semiconductors and graphene: from strain fields to band-structure tuning and photonic applications

Two-dimensional (2D) transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDCs) and graphene compose a new family of crystalline materials with atomic thicknesses and exotic mechanical, electronic, and optical properties. Due to their inherent exceptional mechanical flexibility and strength, these 2D materials provide an ideal platform for strain engineering, enabling versatile modulation and significant enhancement of their optical properties. For instance, recent theoretical and experimental investigations have demonstrated flexible control over their electronic states via application of external strains, such as uniaxial strain and biaxial strain. Meanwhile, many nondestructive optical measurement methods, typically including absorption, reflectance, photoluminescence, and Raman spectroscopies, can be readily exploited to quantitatively determine strain-engineered optical properties. This review begins with an introduction to the macroscopic theory of crystal elasticity and microscopic effective low-energy Hamiltonians coupled with strain fields, and then summarizes recent advances in strain-induced optical responses of 2D TMDCs and graphene, followed by the strain engineering techniques. It concludes with exciting applications associated with strained 2D materials, discussions on existing open questions, and an outlook on this intriguing emerging field.

Efficient Frequency Mixing of Guided Surface Waves by Atomically Thin Nonlinear Crystals

Monolayer transition metal dichalcogenides possess considerable second-order nonlinear coefficients but a limited efficiency of frequency conversion due to the short interaction length with light under the typical direct illumination. Here, we demonstrate an efficient frequency mixing of the guided surface waves on a monolayer tungsten disulfide (WS₂) by simultaneously lifting the temporal and spatial overlap of the guided wave and the nonlinear crystal. Three orders-of-magnitude enhancement of the conversion efficiency was achieved in the counter-propagating excitation configuration. Also, the frequency-mixing signals are highly collimated, with the emission direction and polarization controlled, respectively, by the pump frequencies and the rotation angle of WS₂ relative to the propagation direction of the guided waves. These results indicate that the rules of nonlinear frequency conversion are applicable even when the crystal is scaled down to the ultimate single-layer limit. This study provides a versatile platform to enhance the nonlinear optical response of 2D materials and favor the scalable generation of a coherent light source and entangled photon pairs.

Routing valley exciton emission of a WS2 monolayer via delocalized Bloch modes of in-plane inversion-symmetry-broken photonic crystal slabs

The valleys of two-dimensional transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDCs) offer a new degree of freedom for information processing. To take advantage of this valley degree of freedom, on the one hand, it is feasible to control valleys by utilizing different external stimuli, such as optical and electric fields. On the other hand, nanostructures are also used to separate the valleys by near-field coupling. However, for both of the above methods, either the required low-temperature environment or low degree of coherence properties limit their further applications. Here, we demonstrate that all-dielectric photonic crystal (PhC) slabs without in-plane inversion symmetry (C2 symmetry) can separate and route valley exciton emission of a WS2 monolayer at room temperature. Coupling with circularly polarized photonic Bloch modes of such PhC slabs, valley photons emitted by a WS2 monolayer are routed directionally and are efficiently separated in the far field. In addition, far-field emissions are directionally enhanced and have long-distance spatial coherence properties.

Normal-Incidence-Excited Strong Coupling between Excitons and Symmetry-Protected Quasi-Bound States in the Continuum in Silicon Nitride-WS2 Heterostructures at Room Temperature

Room-temperature strong coupling between quasi-bound states in the continuum (q-BIC) of a silicon nitride metasurface and excitons in a WS₂ monolayer is investigated in detail by both numerical simulations and theoretical calculations. The strong coupling between the q-BIC mode and excitons leads to a remarkable spectral splitting and typical anticrossing behavior of the Rabi splitting, which can be realized in the absorption spectra by varying the grating thickness and asymmetry parameter of the silicon-nitride metasurface, respectively. In addition, both the line width of the q-BIC mode and local electric field enhancement are found to affect the strong coupling, which needs to be considered in detail in q-BIC metasurface designs. This work provides a possible way to enhance light-matter interactions in transition metal dichalcogenides monolayers and pave the way for future quantum and nanophotonic applications.

High-efficiency second-order nonlinear processes in an optical microfibre assisted by few-layer GaSe

The centrosymmetric nature of silica fibre precludes the realisation of second-order nonlinear processes in optical fibre systems. Recently, the integration of 2D materials with optical fibres has opened up a great opportunity to develop all-fibre active devices. Here, we demonstrate high-efficiency second-order nonlinear frequency conversions in an optical microfibre assisted with few-layer gallium selenide (GaSe) nanoflakes. Attributed to the strong evanescent field of the microfibre and ultrahigh second-order nonlinearity of the GaSe nanoflakes, second harmonic generation (SHG) and sum-frequency generation (SFG) are effectively achieved with only sub-milliwatt continuous-wave (CW) lasers in the wavelength range of 1500-1620 nm, covering the C and L telecom bands. The SHG intensity from the microfibre is enhanced by more than four orders of magnitude with the assistance of the GaSe nanoflakes on fibre nonlinear processes. Moreover, in the SFG process, the intensity transfer between different frequencies can be effectively manipulated by changing the wavelengths and powers of two pump lasers. The realised strong second-order nonlinearity in the GaSe-integrated microfibre might expand the applications of all-fibre devices in all-optical signal processing and new light source generation at awkward wavelengths.

Measuring the refractive index of optical adhesives at cryogenic temperatures

The development of photonic quantum information technologies requires research on the properties of optical adhesives at cryogenic temperatures. In the process of developing microfiber (MF)-coupled superconducting nanowire single-photon detectors (SNSPDs), we invented a cryogenic-temperature refractive index (RI) measurement method based on a kind of MF device. The device was put into the cryostat to observe the variance of MF transmittance with temperature. Then an RI-temperature relationship was established through the correspondence between the confinement conditions of MFs of various diameters in an optical adhesive-${{\rm MgF}_2}$MgF₂ environment and transmittance-temperature curves. Using this method, we analyzed the thermal-optical properties of a commercial fluorinated acrylic optical adhesive and obtained the RI values of the adhesive at various temperatures. The results were successfully applied in the development of broadband and high-efficiency MF-coupled SNSPDs.

Investigation of Surface Plasmon Resonance (SPR) in MoS2- and WS2-Protected Titanium Side-Polished Optical Fiber as a Humidity Sensor

In this paper, we report the effects of a side-polished fiber (SPF) coated with titanium (Ti) films in different thicknesses, namely 5 nm, 13 nm, and 36 nm, protected by a thin layer of transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDCs) such as molybdenum disulfide (MoS₂) and tungsten disulfide (WS₂), which provide ultra-sensitive sensor-based surface plasmon resonance (SPR) covering from the visible to mid-infrared region. The SPF deposited with Ti exhibits strong evanescent field interaction with the MoS₂ and WS₂, and good optical absorption, hence resulting in high-sensitivity performance. Incremental increases in the thickness of the Ti layer contribute to the enhancement of the intensity of transmission with redshift and broad spectra. The findings show that the optimum thickness of Ti with 36 nm combined with MoS₂ causes weak redshifts of the longitudinal localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) mode, while the same thickness of Ti with WS₂ causes large blueshifts. The redshifts are possibly due to a reduced plasmon-coupling effect with the excitonic region of MoS₂. The observed blueshifts of the LSPR peak position are possibly due to surface modification between WS₂ and Ti. Changing the relative humidity from 58% to 88% only elicited a response in Ti/MoS₂. Thus, MoS₂ shows more sensitivity on 36-nm thickness of Ti compared with WS₂. Therefore, the proposed fiber-optic sensor with integration of 2D materials is capable of measuring humidity in any environment.

Anisotropic Enhancement of Second-Harmonic Generation in Monolayer and Bilayer MoS2 by Integrating with TiO2 Nanowires

The ability to design and enhance the nonlinear optical responses in two-dimensional (2D) transition-metal dichalcogenides (TMDCs) is both of fundamental interest and highly desirable for developing TMDC-based nonlinear optical applications, such as nonlinear convertors and optical modulators. Here, we report for the first time a strong anisotropic enhancement of optical second-harmonic generation (SHG) in monolayer molybdenum disulfide (MoS₂) by integrating with one-dimensional (1D) titanium dioxide nanowires (NWs). The SHG signal from the MoS₂/NW hybrid structures is over 2 orders of magnitude stronger than that in the bare monolayer MoS₂. Polarized SHG measurements revealed a giant anisotropy in SHG response of the MoS₂/NW hybrid. The pattern of the anisotropic SHG depends highly on the stacking angle between the nanowire direction and the MoS₂ crystal orientation, which is attributed to the 1D NW-induced directional strain fields in the layered MoS₂. A similar effect has also been observed in bilayer MoS₂/NW hybrid structure, further proving the proposed scenario. This work provides an effective approach to selectively and directionally designing the nonlinear optical response of layered TMDCs, paving the way for developing high-performance, anisotropic nonlinear photonic nanodevices.
