Abstract
In this study, we aimed to separately evaluate the relationship between waist circumference and the incidence of hyperuricemia in men and women in the general Japanese population. We performed a population-based longitudinal study using data from the annual health examination of residents of Iki City, Japan. A total of 5567 participants without hyperuricemia at baseline were included in the analysis. The men and women were placed into groups according to the tertile of waist circumference. The outcome was incident hyperuricemia (uric acid > 416 µmol/L [7.0 mg/dL]). The relationship between waist circumference and the incidence of hyperuricemia was investigated using Cox proportional hazards models. During the follow-up period, hyperuricemia developed in 697 people (551 men and 146 women). The incidence (per 1000 person-years) of hyperuricemia increased with increasing waist circumference in the men (34.9 for tertile 1, 49.9 for tertile 2 and 63.3 for tertile 3; Ptrend < 0.001) and women (5.5 for tertile 1, 6.3 for tertile 2 and 11.9 for tertile 3; Ptrend < 0.001). Significant associations were identified after adjustment for potential confounders (men: Ptrend < 0.001; women: Ptrend = 0.014). In conclusion, both men and women with larger waist circumferences were at higher risks of subsequent hyperuricemia.

Abstract
BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES This study aimed to assess the current mean daily intake of 10 food groups, analyze the sociodemographic factors associated with food consumption, and determine the associations between food consumption/dietary intake and the prevalence rates of obesity, type 2 diabetes (T2D), and hypertension (HTN) in Jakarta, Indonesia. SUBJECTS/METHODS A total of 600 participants aged 20-85 yrs were included in this cross-sectional study. Food consumption and dietary habits were assessed using a food frequency questionnaire. To determine the association between food consumption/dietary habits and the abovementioned diseases, logistic regression analysis was performed. RESULTS The average vegetable and fruit intake was lower, while sugar and salt consumption were higher than that recommended by Indonesia's national dietary guidelines. A high intake of ultra-processed foods (UPFs) was associated with young age, men, "single" status, a high education level, and employment with a high monthly income. Obesity and T2D were positively correlated with high intakes of cereals and tubers, UPFs, sugars, fats, and oils. Conversely, an inverse association was found between legume, vegetable, and fruit consumption and obesity risk. An inverse correlation was also observed between vegetable consumption and T2D risk. Moreover, a high salt intake was inversely correlated with fruit consumption in terms of HTN risk. Non-indulgence in habitual late-night snacking and refrainment from consuming more than one dish at each meal were also negatively related to the prevalence of obesity, T2D, and HTN. Inverse correlations were also observed between the prevalence rates of T2D and HTN and abstaining from adding sugar to beverages. CONCLUSION Foods high in fat, sugar, and sodium were strongly associated with the risks of obesity, T2D, and HTN. Additionally, poor eating habits were also associated with disease development.

Abstract
Vascular function assessment is useful for the evaluation of atherosclerosis severity, which may provide additional information for cardiovascular risk stratification. In addition, vascular function assessment is helpful for a better understanding of pathophysiological associations between vascular dysfunction and cardiometabolic disorders. In 2020 and 2021, although coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) was still a worldwide challenge for health care systems, many excellent articles regarding vascular function were published in Hypertension Research and other major cardiovascular and hypertension journals. In this review, we summarize new findings on vascular function and discuss the association between vascular function and COVID-19, the importance of lifestyle modifications for the maintenance of vascular function, and the usefulness of vascular function tests for cardiovascular risk assessment. We hope this review will be helpful for the management of cardiovascular risk factors, including hypertension and cardiovascular diseases, in clinical practice.

Abstract
Hypertension in chronic kidney disease (CKD) patients is a risk factor for end-stage renal disease, cardiovascular events, and mortality. Thus, the prevention and appropriate management of hypertension in these patients are essential strategies for better cardio-renal outcomes. In this review, we show novel risk factors for hypertension with CKD, several promising prognostic markers and treatment for cardio-renal outcomes. Of note, the clinical use of sodium-glucose cotransporter 2 (SGLT2) inhibitors has recently expanded to non-diabetic patients with CKD and heart failure as well as diabetic patients. SGLT2 inhibitors have an antihypertensive effect, but are also associated with a low risk of hypotension. This unique mechanism of blood pressure regulation by SGLT2 inhibitors may partially depend on body fluid homeostasis, which is mediated by the autoregulation property between "accelerator" (diuretic action) and "brake" (increase in anti-diuretic hormone vasopressin and fluid intake). Mineralocorticoid receptor (MR) blockers are used in the treatment of essential hypertension and hyperaldosteronism. Recently, a new MR blocker, finerenone, has been launched as a treatment for CKD with type 2 diabetes. These advances in relation to hypertension in CKD may contribute to the reduction of renal and cardiovascular events.

Serum triglyceride levels and incidence of hypertension in a general Japanese population: ISSA-CKD study. Hypertens Res 2023; 46:1122-1131. Abstract
The aim of this study was to clarify the relationship between fasting and nonfasting serum triglyceride (TG) levels and the incidence of hypertension in a general Japanese population. We conducted a population-based retrospective cohort study using annual health check-up data of residents of Iki City, Nagasaki Prefecture, Japan. A total of 3202 participants without hypertension at baseline were included in the present analysis. TG levels were classified as quartile 1 (<0.82 mmol/L), quartile 2 (0.83-1.13 mmol/L), quartile 3 (1.14-1.70 mmol/L) and quartile 4 (≥1.71 mmol/L) for men, and as quartile 1 (<0.70 mmol/L), quartile 2 (0.71-0.96 mmol/L), quartile 3 (0.97-1.34 mmol/L) and quartile 4 (≥1.35 mmol/L) for women. The outcome was incident hypertension. During an average follow-up of 4.4 years, 983 participants developed hypertension, according to the Cox proportional hazards model. The annual incidence of hypertension increased with an elevation in TG levels for men (5.88% in quartile 1, 8.30% in quartile 2, 7.62% in quartile 3, and 9.82% in quartile 4). This association was significant, even after adjustment for other risk factors: hazard ratio 1.41 [95% CI 1.07-1.85] for quartile 2, 1.30 [0.99-1.71] for quartile 3, and 1.59 [1.22-2.08] for quartile 4 compared with quartile 1 (p = 0.041 for trend). In contrast, there was no clear association between serum TG levels and the incidence of hypertension after adjustment for confounding factors among women (p = 0.240 for trend). High levels of serum TG were associated with the future incidence of hypertension in a general population of Japanese men but were not associated with that in women.
