Dynamical Janus-Like Behavior Excited by Passive Cold-Heat Modulation in the Earth-Sun/Universe System: Opportunities and Challenges

The utilization of solar-thermal energy and universal cold energy has led to many innovative designs that achieve effective temperature regulation in different application scenarios. Numerous studies on passive solar heating and radiation cooling often operate independently (or actively control the conversion) and lack a cohesive framework for deep connections. This work provides a concise overview of the recent breakthroughs in solar heating and radiation cooling by employing a mechanism material in the application model. Furthermore, the utilization of dynamic Janus-like behavior serves as a novel nexus to elucidate the relationship between solar heating and radiation cooling, allowing for the analysis of dynamic conversion strategies across various applications. Additionally, special discussions are provided to address specific requirements in diverse applications, such as optimizing light transmission for clothing or window glass. Finally, the challenges and opportunities associated with the development of solar heating and radiation cooling applications are underscored, which hold immense potential for substantial carbon emission reduction and environmental preservation. This work aims to ignite interest and lay a solid foundation for researchers to conduct in-depth studies on effective and self-adaptive regulation of cooling and heating.

Optimal Time-Entropy Bounds and Speed Limits for Brownian Thermal Shortcuts

By controlling the variance of the radiation pressure exerted on an optically trapped microsphere in real time, we engineer temperature protocols that shortcut thermal relaxation when transferring the microsphere from one thermal equilibrium state to another. We identify the entropic footprint of such accelerated transfers and derive optimal temperature protocols that either minimize the production of entropy for a given transfer duration or accelerate the transfer for a given entropic cost as much as possible. Optimizing the trade-off yields time-entropy bounds that put speed limits on thermalization schemes. We further show how optimization expands the possibilities for accelerating Brownian thermalization down to its fundamental limits. Our approach paves the way for the design of optimized, finite-time thermodynamics for Brownian engines. It also offers a platform for investigating fundamental connections between information geometry and finite-time processes.

Information in feedback ratchets

Feedback control uses the state information of the system to actuate on it. The information used implies an effective entropy reduction of the controlled system, potentially increasing its performance. How to compute this entropy reduction has been formally shown for a general system and has been explicitly computed for spatially discrete systems. Here, we address a relevant example of how to compute the entropy reduction by information in a spatially continuous feedback-controlled system. Specifically, we consider a feedback flashing ratchet, which constitutes a paradigmatic example for the role of information and feedback in the dynamics and thermodynamics of transport induced by the rectification of Brownian motion. A Brownian particle moves in a periodic potential that is switched on and off by a controller. The controller measures the position of the particle at regular intervals and performs the switching depending on the result of the measurement. This system reaches a long-time dynamical regime with a nonzero mean particle velocity, even for a symmetric potential. Here, we calculate the efficiency at maximum power in this long-time regime, computing all the required contributions. We show how the entropy reduction can be evaluated from the entropy of the non-Markovian sequence of control actions, and we also discuss the required sampling effort for its accurate computation. Moreover, the output power developed by the particle against an external force is investigated, which-for some values of the system parameters-is shown to become larger than the input power provided by the switching of the potential. The apparent efficiency of the ratchet thus becomes higher than one, if the entropy reduction contribution is not considered. This result highlights the relevance of including the entropy reduction by information in the thermodynamic balance of feedback-controlled devices, specifically when writing the second principle. The inclusion of the entropy reduction by information leads to a well-behaved efficiency over all the range of parameters investigated.

Persistent motion of a Brownian particle subject to repulsive feedback with time delay

Based on analytical and numerical calculations we study the dynamics of an overdamped colloidal particle moving in two dimensions under time-delayed, nonlinear feedback control. Specifically, the particle is subject to a force derived from a repulsive Gaussian potential depending on the difference between its instantaneous position, r(t), and its earlier position r(t-τ), where τ is the delay time. Considering first the deterministic case, we provide analytical results for both the case of small displacements and the dynamics at long times. In particular, at appropriate values of the feedback parameters, the particle approaches a steady state with a constant, nonzero velocity whose direction is constant as well. In the presence of noise, the direction of motion becomes randomized at long times, but the (numerically obtained) velocity autocorrelation still reveals some persistence of motion. Moreover, the mean-squared displacement (MSD) reveals a mixed regime at intermediate times with contributions of both ballistic motion and diffusive translational motion, allowing us to extract an estimate for the effective propulsion velocity in presence of noise. We then analyze the data in terms of exact, known results for the MSD of active Brownian particles. The comparison indeed indicates a strong similarity between the dynamics of the particle under repulsive delayed feedback and active motion. This relation carries over to the behavior of the long-time diffusion coefficient D_{eff} which, similarly to active motion, is strongly enhanced compared to the free case. Finally, we show that, for small delays, D_{eff} can be estimated analytically.

Non-Markovian Feedback Control and Acausality: An Experimental Study

Causality is an important assumption underlying nonequilibrium generalizations of the second law of thermodynamics known as fluctuation relations. We here experimentally study the nonequilibrium statistical properties of the work and of the entropy production for an optically trapped, underdamped nanoparticle continuously subjected to a time-delayed feedback control. Whereas the non-Markovian feedback depends on the past position of the particle for a forward trajectory, it depends on its future position for a time-reversed path, and is therefore acausal. In the steady-state regime, we show that the corresponding fluctuation relations in the long-time limit exhibit a clear signature of this acausality, even though the time-reversed dynamics is not physically realizable.

Nonequilibrium Control of Thermal and Mechanical Changes in a Levitated System

Fluctuation theorems are fundamental extensions of the second law of thermodynamics for small nonequilibrium systems. While work and heat are equally important forms of energy exchange, fluctuation relations have not been experimentally assessed for the generic situation of simultaneous mechanical and thermal changes. Thermal driving is indeed generally slow and more difficult to realize than mechanical driving. Here, we use feedback cooling techniques to implement fast and controlled temperature variations of an underdamped levitated microparticle that are 1 order of magnitude faster than the equilibration time. Combining mechanical and thermal control, we verify the validity of a fluctuation theorem that accounts for both contributions, well beyond the range of linear response theory. Our results allow the investigation of general far-from-equilibrium processes in microscopic systems that involve fast mechanical and thermal changes at the same time.

Medium Entropy Reduction and Instability in Stochastic Systems with Distributed Delay

Many natural and artificial systems are subject to some sort of delay, which can be in the form of a single discrete delay or distributed over a range of times. Here, we discuss the impact of this distribution on (thermo-)dynamical properties of time-delayed stochastic systems. To this end, we study a simple classical model with white and colored noise, and focus on the class of Gamma-distributed delays which includes a variety of distinct delay distributions typical for feedback experiments and biological systems. A physical application is a colloid subject to time-delayed feedback control, which is, in principle, experimentally realizable by co-moving optical traps. We uncover several unexpected phenomena in regard to the system's linear stability and its thermodynamic properties. First, increasing the mean delay time can destabilize or stabilize the process, depending on the distribution of the delay. Second, for all considered distributions, the heat dissipated by the controlled system (e.g., the colloidal particle) can become negative, which implies that the delay force extracts energy and entropy of the bath. As we show here, this refrigerating effect is particularly pronounced for exponential delay. For a specific non-reciprocal realization of a control device, we find that the entropic costs, measured by the total entropy production of the system plus controller, are the lowest for exponential delay. The exponential delay further yields the largest stable parameter regions. In this sense, exponential delay represents the most effective and robust type of delayed feedback.
