Broadband generation of perfect Poincaré beams via dielectric spin-multiplexed metasurface

Construction of vector vortex beams on hybrid-order Poincaré sphere through highly scattering media

Vector vortex beams (VVBs) have attracted extensive attention due to their unique properties and their wide applications in fields such as optical manipulation and optical imaging. However, the wavefronts of the vector vortex beams are highly scrambled when they encounter highly scattering media (HSM), such as thick biological tissues, which greatly prevents the applications of VVBs behind HSM. To address this issue, we propose a scheme to construct VVBs of freewill position on the surface of hybrid-order Poincaré sphere (HyOPS) through HSM. With the measurement of two orthogonal scalar transmission matrices, the conjugated wavefronts for constructing orbital angular momentum beams with arbitrary topological charge in right and left circularly polarized states through HSM can be calculated, respectively. When an input wavefront superimposed by the two conjugated wavefronts with an appropriate ratio and phase delay, impinges on the HSM, the desired VVB can be created through HSM. To demonstrate the viability of our scheme, a series of VVBs on different locations of various HyOPSs have been reconstructed through a ZnO scattering layer experimentally. Furthermore, to characterize the polarization distribution of the generated beams, the polarization maps of these beams are derived by measuring the four Stokes parameters, which agree well with the theoretical distributions. This work will promote the applications of VVBs in highly scattering environments.

Multichannel focused higher-order Poincaré sphere beam generation based on a dielectric geometric metasurface

Focused vector beams (VBs) are important topic in the areas of light field manipulation. Geometric metasurfaces provide a convenient platform to facilitate the generation of focused VBs. In this study, we propose a dielectric geometric metasurface to generate multichannel focused higher-order Poincaré sphere (HOP) beams. With identical meta-atoms of half-wave plate, the metasurface comprises two sub-metasurfaces, and each of them includes two sets of rings related to Fresnel zones. For meta-atoms on each set of rings, the hyperbolic geometric phase profile is configured so that the mirror-symmetrical position-flip of the off-axis focal point is enabled under the chirality switch of the illuminating circular polarization. With the design of helical geometric phase profiles for the two sets of rings, a sub-metasurface generate two HOP beams at the symmetrical two focal points. The performance of the two sub-metasurfaces enables the metasurface with four sets of rings to generate the array of four HOP beams. The proposed method was validated by theoretical analyses, numerical simulation and experimental conduction. This research would be significant in miniaturizing and integrating optical systems involving applications of VB generations and applications.

Dual perfect vectorial vortex beam generation with a single spin-multiplexed metasurface

Perfect optical vortex beams (POVBs) carrying orbital angular momentum (OAM) possess annular intensity profiles that are independent of the topological charge. Unlike POVBs, perfect vectorial vortex beams (PVVBs) not only carry orbital angular momentum but also exhibit spin angular momentum (SAM). By incorporating a Dammann vortex grating (DVG) on an all-dielectric metasurface, we demonstrate an approach to create a pair of PVVBs on a hybrid-order Poincaré sphere. Benefiting flexible phase modulation, by engineering the DVG and changing the input-beam state we are able to freely tailor the topological OAM and polarization eigenstates of the output PVVBs. This work demonstrates a versatile flat-optics platform for high-quality PVVB generation and may pave the way for applications in optical communication and quantum information processing.

Two-dimensional beam scanning by tunable photonic spin Hall effect

To the best of our knowledge, a novel tunable photonic spin Hall effect is proposed based on a pair of liquid crystal Pancharatnam-Berry (PB) lenses. Owing to the spin-dependent geometric phases, a PB lens focus or defocus the incident light field according to its spin angular momentum. By cascading two PB lenses with a small gap, the focus and defocus effects can be suppressed, and the transmitted light fields with opposite spin will be deflected toward opposite directions when the two PB lenses have a relative lateral displacement. The deflection angles vary linearly with the displacements, thus double-lines two-dimensional continuous beam scanning is achieved with a scanning angle of 39o × 39° and a beam diverging angle of 0.028o × 0.028°. The scanning beam is used to write different patterns on a 200 nm thick gold film. We believe this beam scanning system can find wide applications ranging from laser processing, Lidar, particle manipulation, to free space optical communications.

Experimental realization of a transmissive microwave metasurface for dual vector vortex beams generation

This work presents a theoretical design and experimental demonstration of a transmissive microwave metasurface for generating dual-vector vortex beams (VVBs). The proposed metasurface consists of an array of pixelated dartboard discretization meta-atoms. By rotating the meta-atoms from 0° to 180°, a Pancharatnam-Barry (P-B) phase covering the full 360° range is achieved, with a transmittance exceeding 90% over the frequency range from 9.7 to 10.2 GHz. The measured results demonstrate that when a linearly polarized microwave normally impinges on the metasurface, the transmitted beams correspond to the dual VVBs with different directions. A good agreement among Poincaré sphere theory, full-wave simulation, and experimental measurement is observed. This proposed transmissive microwave metasurface for VVBs may offer promising applications in communications and radar detection.

High-security learning-based optical encryption assisted by disordered metasurface

Artificial intelligence has gained significant attention for exploiting optical scattering for optical encryption. Conventional scattering media are inevitably influenced by instability or perturbations, and hence unsuitable for long-term scenarios. Additionally, the plaintext can be easily compromised due to the single channel within the medium and one-to-one mapping between input and output. To mitigate these issues, a stable spin-multiplexing disordered metasurface (DM) with numerous polarized transmission channels serves as the scattering medium, and a double-secure procedure with superposition of plaintext and security key achieves two-to-one mapping between input and output. In attack analysis, when the ciphertext, security key, and incident polarization are all correct, the plaintext can be decrypted. This system demonstrates excellent decryption efficiency over extended periods in noisy environments. The DM, functioning as an ultra-stable and active speckle generator, coupled with the double-secure approach, creates a highly secure speckle-based cryptosystem with immense potentials for practical applications.

All-dielectric geometric metasurfaces for the generation and manipulation of perfect high-order Poincaré sphere beams

A high-order Poincaré sphere (HOPS) can be used to describe high-order modes of waveguides and vector beams, since it generalizes the feature of spin and the orbital angular momentum of light. HOPS beams are such beams with polarization states on the HOPS, which have potential applications in optical manipulation and optical communication. In general, the intensity distribution of this kind of beam changes with the topological charge, which limits their practical applications. Based on the concept of perfect vortex beams (PVBs), perfect HOPS beams have been proposed to solve this problem. Here, a flexible and compact scheme based on all-dielectric metasurfaces for realizing and manipulating perfect HOPS beams at near-infrared wavelength was demonstrated. Geometric-phase-only manipulation was employed for simultaneously controlling the phase and polarization of the incident light. By varying the incident polarization, several selected polarization states on the HOPS could be realized by the proposed metasurface. Further, the single ultra-thin metasurface can also realize high quality multiplexing perfect HOPS beams that carry different topological charges. Finally, a cascaded metasurface system has been proposed for generating and manipulating multiple HOPS beams. This compact flat-optics-based scheme for perfect HOPS beam generation and manipulation demonstrated here can be used for on-chip optical manipulation and integrated optical communication in the future.

Multi-dimensional cylindrical vector beam (de)multiplexing through cascaded wavelength- and polarization-sensitive metasurfaces

Cylindrical vector beams (CVBs) exhibit great potential for multiplexing communication, owing to their mode orthogonality and compatibility with conventional wavelength multiplexing techniques. However, the practical application of CVB multiplexing communication faces challenges due to the lack of effective spatial polarization manipulation technologies for (de)multiplexing multi-dimensional physical dimensions of CVBs. Herein, we introduce a wavelength- and polarization-sensitive cascaded phase modulation strategy that utilizes multiple coaxial metasurfaces for multi-dimensional modulation of CVBs. By leveraging the spin-dependent phase modulation mechanism, these metasurfaces enable the independent transformation of the two orthogonal polarization components of CVB modes. Combined with the wavelength sensitivity of Fresnel diffraction in progressive phase modulation, this approach establishes a high-dimensional mapping relationship among CVB modes, wavelengths, spatial positions, and Gaussian fundamental modes, thereby facilitating multi-dimensional (de)multiplexing involving CVB modes and wavelengths. As a proof of concept, we theoretically demonstrate a 9-channel multi-dimensional multiplexing system, successfully achieving joint (de)multiplexing of 3 CVB modes (1, 2, and 3) and 3 wavelengths (1550 nm, 1560 nm, and 1570 nm) with a diffraction efficiency exceeding 80%. Additionally, we show the transmission of 16-QAM signals across 9 channels with the bit-error-rates below 10-5. By combining the integrability of metasurfaces with the high-dimensional wavefront manipulation capabilities of multilevel modulation, our strategy can effectively address the diverse demands of different wavelengths and CVB modes in optical communication.

Elliptical spiral zone plate fabrication using direct laser writing for generating an elliptical perfect vortex beam

We report and fabricate a novel, to our knowledge, vortex beam generator called elliptical spiral zone plate (ESZP) using direct laser writing (DLW), which can generate the elliptical perfect vortex beam (EPVB). It is shown that the radius of the EPVB can be adjusted by tuning the control parameters of the ESZP. It is verified through the interference experiment and the Hermitian-Gaussian light field that the topological charge of the EPVB is consistent with the design. In addition, we integrate the ESZP at the tip of the single-mode fiber. Our work may set the scene for applications in fiber optical tweezers, optical communications, and integrated optics.

Do dielectric bilayer metasurfaces behave as a stack of decoupled single-layer metasurfaces?

Flat optics or metasurfaces have opened new frontiers in wavefront shaping and its applications. Polarization optics is one prominent area which has greatly benefited from the shape-birefringence of metasurfaces. However, flat optics comprising a single layer of meta-atoms can only perform a subset of polarization transformations, constrained by a symmetric Jones matrix. This limitation can be tackled using metasurfaces composed of bilayer meta-atoms but exhausting all possible combinations of geometries to build a bilayer metasurface library is a very daunting task. Consequently, bilayer metasurfaces have been widely treated as a cascade (product) of two decoupled single-layer metasurfaces. Here, we test the validity of this assumption for dielectric metasurfaces by considering a metasurface made of titanium dioxide on fused silica substrate at a design wavelength of 532 nm. We explore regions in the design space where the coupling between the top and bottom layers can be neglected, i.e., producing a far-field response which approximates that of two decoupled single-layer metasurfaces. We complement this picture with the near-field analysis to explore the underlying physics in regions where both layers are strongly coupled. We also show the generality of our analysis by applying it to silicon metasurfaces at telecom wavelengths. Our unified approach allows the designer to efficiently build a multi-layer dielectric metasurface, either in transmission or reflection, by only running one full-wave simulation for a single-layer metasurface.

Quarter-Wave Plate Metasurfaces for Generating Multi-Channel Vortex Beams

Metasurfaces of quarter-wave plate (QWP) meta-atoms have exhibited high flexibility and versatile functionalities in the manipulation of light fields. However, the generation of multi-channel vortex beams with the QWP meta-atom metasurfaces presents a significant challenge. In this study, we propose dielectric metasurfaces composed of QWP meta-atoms to manipulate multi-channel vortex beams. QWP meta-atoms, systematically arranged in concentric circular rings, are designed to introduce the modulations via the propagation phase and geometric phase, leading to the generation of co- and cross-polarized vortex beams in distinct channels. Theoretical investigations and simulations are employed to analyze the modulation process, confirming the capability of QWP meta-atom metasurfaces for generating the multi-channel vortex beams. This study presents prospective advancements for the compact, integrated, and multifunctional nanophotonic platforms, which have potential applications in classical physics and quantum domains.

Gallium nitride-based geometric and propagation metasurfaces for vortex beam emissions

This work experimentally demonstrates the highly-efficient geometric and propagation metasurfaces for vortex beam emissions. These metasurfaces are respectively composed of high-aspect-ratio fin-like and cylindrical gallium nitride (GaN) meta-atoms. Remarkably, the optimized configuration of the fin-like GaN meta-atoms achieves a cross-polarization transmission efficiency of up to 99 %. Similarly, the cylindrical GaN meta-atoms exhibit an average co-polarization transmission efficiency of 97 %. Both metasurfaces, designed for vortex beam emission, exhibit annular intensity converging capabilities at distinct wavelengths in the visible. Notably, the geometric metasurface shows achromatic annular intensity distributions over a continuous wavelength range up to 100 nm, in sharp contrast to the propagation metasurface, which is subject to inherent wavelength dispersion limitations.

Highly Efficient Storage of 25-Dimensional Photonic Qudit in a Cold-Atom-Based Quantum Memory

Building an efficient quantum memory in high-dimensional Hilbert spaces is one of the fundamental requirements for establishing high-dimensional quantum repeaters, where it offers many advantages over two-dimensional quantum systems, such as a larger information capacity and enhanced noise resilience. To date, it remains a challenge to develop an efficient high-dimensional quantum memory. Here, we experimentally realize a quantum memory that is operational in Hilbert spaces of up to 25 dimensions with a storage efficiency of close to 60% and a fidelity of 84.2±0.6%. The proposed approach exploits the spatial-mode-independent interaction between atoms and photons which are encoded in transverse-size-invariant vortex modes. In particular, our memory features uniform storage efficiency and low crosstalk disturbance for 25 individual spatial modes of photons, thus allowing the storing of qudit states programmed from 25 eigenstates within the high-dimensional Hilbert spaces. These results have great prospects for the implementation of long-distance high-dimensional quantum networks and quantum information processing.

High-Resolution Metalens Imaging Polarimetry

Imaging polarimeters find many critical applications in applications ranging from remote sensing to biological detection. Metasurfaces have been proposed as a compact approach for imaging polarimeters, but prior strategies suffer from low imaging resolution. Here, we propose an interleaved metalens configuration for polarization imaging where three-row metasurface units within a group individually interact with three pairs of orthogonal polarization channels. The optical paths between the object and adjacent three-row metasurfaces are nearly equal, allowing the construction of a metalens polarimeter with an unlimited numerical aperture (NA), which is beneficial for high-resolution polarization imaging. The metalens polarimeter fabricated by crystalline silicon nanostructures has a NA of 0.51 at 632.8 nm and achieves an imaging resolution of up to a 1.2-fold wavelength. Polarimetric microscopy experiments demonstrate that metalens polarimeters can realize high-resolution polarization imaging for various microscopic samples. This study offers a promising solution for high-resolution metasurface polarization imaging, with the potential for widespread applications.

Metafiber transforming arbitrarily structured light

Structured light has proven useful for numerous photonic applications. However, the current use of structured light in optical fiber science and technology is severely limited by mode mixing or by the lack of optical elements that can be integrated onto fiber end-faces for wavefront engineering, and hence generation of structured light is still handled outside the fiber via bulky optics in free space. We report a metafiber platform capable of creating arbitrarily structured light on the hybrid-order Poincaré sphere. Polymeric metasurfaces, with unleashed height degree of freedom and a greatly expanded 3D meta-atom library, were 3D laser nanoprinted and interfaced with polarization-maintaining single-mode fibers. Multiple metasurfaces were interfaced on the fiber end-faces, transforming the fiber output into different structured-light fields, including cylindrical vector beams, circularly polarized vortex beams, and arbitrary vector field. Our work provides a paradigm for advancing optical fiber science and technology towards fiber-integrated light shaping, which may find important applications in fiber communications, fiber lasers and sensors, endoscopic imaging, fiber lithography, and lab-on-fiber technology.

Metasurfaces for generating higher-order Poincaré beams by polarization-selective focusing and overall elimination of co-polarization components

Focused higher-order Poincaré (HOP) beams are of particular interest because they facilitate understanding the exotic properties of structured light and their applications in classical physics and quantum information. However, generating focused HOP beams using metasurfaces is challenging. In this study, we proposed a metasurface design comprising two sets of metal nanoslits for generating coaxially focused HOP beams. The nanoslits were interleaved on equispaced alternating rings. The initial rings started at the two adjacent Fresnel zones to provide opposite propagation phases for overall elimination of the co-polarization components. With the designed hyperbolic and helical profiles of the geometric phases, the two vortices of the opposite cross-circular-polarizations were formed and selectively focused, realizing HOP beams of improved quality. Simulations and experimental results demonstrated the feasibility of the proposed metasurface design. This study is of significance in the integration of miniaturized optical devices and enriches the application areas of metasurfaces.

On-demand multiplexed vortex beams for terahertz polarization detection based on metasurfaces

The manipulation of polarization states is crucial for tailoring light-matter interactions and has great applications in fundamental science. Nevertheless, conventional polarization measurement approaches are extremely challenging to determine the polarization state of incident terahertz (THz) beams. The combination of metasurfaces and inhomogeneous vector vortex beams (VVBs) provides a new solution for integrated polarization-related functional devices. Herein, a general design strategy for spin-multiplexing all-silicon metasurfaces is presented and demonstrated in THz polarization detection. The employment of basic building blocks with a high aspect ratio (AR) imparts a greater degree of freedom for generating vector beams, and those basic blocks are subsequently utilized to explore the visualized polarization state. With the assistance of a THz near-field scanning system, we evaluate the capability of reconstructing the incident polarization state from the longitudinal polarization component multiplexed by vortex beams with tight focusing characteristics. Not only that, we also utilize the polarization with dynamically varying behavior as the illumination method to elucidate the evolution trend of the polarization state under a single snapshot and establish a visualized parametric model. This work paves the way to realize ultra-compact THz polarization detection-related devices for future applications in remote sensing, high-resolution imaging, and communications.

Optical reflective metasurfaces enable spin-decoupled OAM and focusing

Due to the physically unrestricted set of orthogonally helical modes of orbital angular momentum (OAM), it has contributed significantly to wireless communication and information capacity. Meanwhile, focusing has important applications in fields such as super-resolution microscopic imaging and optical integration. Plasmonic metasurfaces have a powerful ability to modulate electromagnetic (EM) waves, and diversified functionalities in them are strongly desired. As of today, few plasmonic metasurfaces are reported which have multi-function in a single flat device. Herein, by fine-tuning the geometric dimensions and orientation angle of the meta-atom, the geometric phase is combined with the propagation phase to produce an independent phase response when left-handed circular polarization (LCP) and right-handed circular polarization (RCP) waves illuminate the metasurface. This paper presents three plasmonic metasurfaces, and each of them implements multiple functions on a single plasmonic metasurface. Firstly, normal reflection of OAM and a focused beam is achieved. Secondly, we realize anomalous reflection of OAM by convolving a gradient sequence and implement computational focusing at any point. Finally, addition theorem is adopted to implement the above two functions, and this design contains normal and inclined output beams. Our work provides novel approaches for the integration of multifunctional EM modulation.

Continuous-Spectrum-Polarization Recombinant Optical Encryption with a Dielectric Metasurface

The Jones matrix, with eight degrees of freedom (DoFs), provides a general mathematical framework for the multifunctional design of metasurfaces. Theoretically, the maximum eight DoFs can be further extended in the spectrum dimension to endow unique encryption capabilities. However, the topology and intrinsic spectral responses of meta-atoms constrains the continuous engineering of polarization evolution over wavelength dimension. In this work, a forward evolution strategy to quickly establish the mapping relationships between the solutions of the dispersion Jones matrix and the spectral responses of meta-atoms is reported. Based on the eigenvector transformation method, arbitrary conjugate polarization channels over the continuous-spectrum dimension are successfully reconstructed. As a proof-of-concept, a silicon metadevice is demonstrated for optical information encryption transmission. Remarkably, the arbitrary combination forms of polarization and wavelength dimension increase the information capacity (210 ), and the measured polarization contrasts of the conjugate polarization conversion are >94% in the entire wavelength range (3-4 µm). It is believed that the proposed approach will benefit secure optical and quantum information technologies.

Wide-Angle Optical Metasurface for Vortex Beam Generation

In this work, we have achieved an advancement by integrating wide-angle capacity into vortex beams with an impressive topological charge (TC) of 12. This accomplishment was realized through the meticulous engineering of a propagation-phase-designed metasurface. Comprising gallium nitride (GaN), meta-structures characterized by their high-aspect ratio, this metasurface exhibits an average co-polarization transmission efficiency, reaching a remarkable simulated value of up to 97%. The intricate spiral patterns, along with their respective quantification, have been meticulously investigated through tilt-view scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and were further analyzed through the Mach-Zehnder interferometer. A captivating revelation emerged, a distinctive petal-like interference pattern manifests prior to the metasurface's designed focal distance. The occurrence of this petal-like pattern at a specific z-axis position prompts a deliberate manipulation of the helicity of the spiral branches. This strategic helicity alteration is intrinsically tied to the achievement of a minimized donut diameter at the designed focal length. In regard to the angular capability of the device, the captured images continuously showcase prominent attributes within incident angles spanning up to 30 degrees. However, as incident angles surpass the 30-degree threshold, the measured values diverge from their corresponding theoretical projections, resulting in a progressive reduction in the completeness of the donut-shaped structure.

Silicon metaoptics for the compact generation of perfect vector beams in the telecom infrared

Perfect vortices have attracted considerable attention as orbital angular momentum (OAM) beams with customizable ring-like intensity distribution. More recently, the non-separable combination of perfect vortices with opposite OAMs and spins, yielding so-called perfect vector beams, has further expanded their applications in the fields of optical manipulation and imaging, high-resolution lithography, and telecommunications. Exploiting the combined manipulation of dynamic and geometric phases using silicon anisotropic metaunits, here we present the design, fabrication, and characterization of novel, to the best of our knowledge, dielectric metaoptics for the compact generation of perfect vector beams in the telecom infrared using a single metasurface. These devices pave the way to integrated optical architectures with applications in information and communication technologies in both the classical and quantum regimes.

Nanophotonic Materials for Twisted-Light Manipulation

Twisted light, an unbounded set of helical spatial modes carrying orbital angular momentum (OAM), offers not only fundamental new insights into structured light-matter interactions, but also a new degree of freedom to boost optical and quantum information capacity. However, current OAM experiments still rely on bulky, expensive, and slow-response diffractive or refractive optical elements, hindering today's OAM systems to be largely deployed. In the last decade, nanophotonics has transformed the photonic design and unveiled a diverse range of compact and multifunctional nanophotonic devices harnessing the generation and detection of OAM modes. Recent metasurface devices developed for OAM generation in both real and momentum space, presenting design principle and exemplary devices, are summarized. Moreover, recent development of whispering-gallery-mode-based passive and tunable microcavities, capable of extracting degenerate OAM modes for on-chip vortex emission and lasing, is summarized. In addition, the design principle of different plasmonic devices and photodetectors recently developed for on-chip OAM detection is discussed. Current challenges faced by the nanophotonic field for twisted-light manipulation and future advances to meet these challenges are further discussed. It is believed that twisted-light manipulation in nanophotonics will continue to make significant impact on future development of ultracompact, ultrahigh-capacity, and ultrahigh-speed OAM systems-on-a-chip.

Phase control scheme of the coherent beam combining system for generating perfect vectorial vortex beams assisted by a Dammann vortex grating

Based on Dammann vortex grating and adaptive gain stochastic parallel gradient descent algorithm, we theoretically proposed a phase control technology scheme of the coherent beam combining system for generating perfect vectorial vortex beams (VVBs). The simulated results demonstrate that the discrete phase locking for different types of VVBs (including vortex beams, vector beams, and generalized VVBs) can be successfully realized. The intensity distributions, polarization orientation, Pancharatnam phases, and beam widths of different |Hm_,n〉 states with the obtained discrete phase distribution further prove that the generated beams are perfect VVBs. Subsequently, the phase aberration residual for different VVBs is evaluated using the normalized phase cosine distance function, and their values range from 0.01 to 0.08, which indicates the obtained discrete phase distribution is close to the ideal phase distribution. In addition, benefitting from the high bandwidth of involved devices in the proposed scheme, the influence of dynamic phase noise can be negligible. The proposed method could be beneficial to realize and switch flexible perfect VVBs in further applications.

Single Photon Emitters with Polarization and Orbital Angular Momentum Locking in Monolayer Semiconductors

Excitons in monolayer transition metal dichalcogenide are endowed with intrinsic valley-orbit coupling between their center-of-mass motion and valley pseudospin. When trapped in a confinement potential, e.g., generated by strain field, we find that intralayer excitons are valley and orbital angular momentum (OAM) entangled. By tuning the trap profile and external magnetic field, one can engineer the exciton states at the ground state and realize a series of valley-OAM entangled states. We further show that the OAM of excitons can be transferred to emitted photons, and these novel exciton states can naturally serve as polarization-OAM locked single photon emitters, which under certain circumstance become polarization-OAM entangled, highly tunable by strain trap and magnetic field. Our proposal demonstrates a novel scheme to generate polarization-OAM locked/entangled photons at the nanoscale with a high degree of integrability and tunability, pointing to exciting opportunities for quantum information applications.

Metasurface-Enabled On-Chip Manipulation of Higher-Order Poincaré Sphere Beams

An integrated way to generate and manipulate higher-order Poincaré sphere beams (HOPBs) is a sought-after goal in photonic integrated circuits for high-capacity communication systems. Here, we demonstrate a novel method for on-chip generation and manipulation of HOPBs through combining metasurface with optical waveguides on lithium niobate on insulator platform. With phase modulation by a diatomic geometric metasurface, guided waves are extracted into free space with a high signal-to-noise ratio in the form of two orthogonal circularly polarized optical vortices which are linearly superposed into HOPBs. Meanwhile, a dual-port waveguide crossing is established to reconfigure the output states into an arbitrary point on a higher-order Poincaré sphere based on in-plane interference of two guided waves. Our approach provides a promising solution to generate and manipulate the HOPBs in a compact manner, which would be further enhanced by employing the electro-optical modulation on a lithium niobate waveguide to access a fully tunable scheme.

Meta-optics empowered vector visual cryptography for high security and rapid decryption

Optical encryption is a promising approach to protecting secret information owing to the advantages of low-power consumption, parallel, high-speed, and multi-dimensional processing capabilities. Nevertheless, conventional strategies generally suffer from bulky system volume, relatively low security level, redundant measurement, and/or requirement of digital decryption algorithms. Here, we propose a general optical security strategy dubbed meta-optics-empowered vector visual cryptography, which fully exploits the abundant degrees of freedom of light as well as the spatial dislocation as key parameters, significantly upgrading the security level. We also demonstrate a decryption meta-camera that can implement the reversal coding procedure for real-time imaging display of hidden information, avoiding redundant measurement and digital post-processing. Our strategy features the merits of a compact footprint, high security, and rapid decryption, which may open an avenue for optical information security and anti-counterfeiting.

Longitudinal evolution from scalar to vector beams assembled from all-dielectric metasurfaces

Vector vortex beams (VVBs) with non-uniform polarization states have a wide range of applications, from particle capture to quantum information. Here, we theoretically demonstrate a generic design for all-dielectric metasurfaces operating in the terahertz (THz) band, characterized as a longitudinal evolution from scalar vortices carrying homogeneous polarization states to inhomogeneous vector vortices with polarization singularities. The order of the converted VVBs can be arbitrarily tailored by manipulating the topological charge embedded in two orthogonal circular polarization channels. The introduction of the extended focal length and the initial phase difference effectively guarantees the smoothness of the longitudinal switchable behavior. A generic design approach based on vector-generated metasurfaces can assist in the exploration of new singular properties of THz optical fields.

Angular momentum holography via a minimalist metasurface for optical nested encryption

Metasurfaces can perform high-performance multi-functional integration by manipulating the abundant physical dimensions of light, demonstrating great potential in high-capacity information technologies. The orbital angular momentum (OAM) and spin angular momentum (SAM) dimensions have been respectively explored as the independent carrier for information multiplexing. However, fully managing these two intrinsic properties in information multiplexing remains elusive. Here, we propose the concept of angular momentum (AM) holography which can fully synergize these two fundamental dimensions to act as the information carrier, via a single-layer, non-interleaved metasurface. The underlying mechanism relies on independently controlling the two spin eigenstates and arbitrary overlaying them in each operation channel, thereby spatially modulating the resulting waveform at will. As a proof of concept, we demonstrate an AM meta-hologram allowing the reconstruction of two sets of holographic images, i.e., the spin-orbital locked and the spin-superimposed ones. Remarkably, leveraging the designed dual-functional AM meta-hologram, we demonstrate a novel optical nested encryption scheme, which is able to achieve parallel information transmission with ultra-high capacity and security. Our work opens a new avenue for optionally manipulating the AM, holding promising applications in the fields of optical communication, information security and quantum science.

Bifunctional Manipulation of Terahertz Waves with High-Efficiency Transmissive Dielectric Metasurfaces

Multifunctional terahertz (THz) devices in transmission mode are highly desired in integration-optics applications, but conventional devices are bulky in size and inefficient. While ultra-thin multifunctional THz devices are recently demonstrated based on reflective metasurfaces, their transmissive counterparts suffer from severe limitations in efficiency and functionality. Here, based on high aspect-ratio silicon micropillars exhibiting wide transmission-phase tuning ranges with high transmission-amplitudes, a set of dielectric metasurfaces is designed and fabricated to achieve efficient spin-multiplexed wavefront controls on THz waves. As a benchmark test, the photonic-spin-Hall-effect is experimentally demonstrated with a record high absolute efficiency of 92% using a dielectric metasurface encoded with geometric phases only. Next, spin-multiplexed controls on circularly polarized THz beams (e.g., anomalous refraction and focusing) are experimentally demonstrated with experimental efficiency reaching 88%, based on a dielectric meta-device encoded with both spin-independent resonant phases and spin-dependent geometric phases. Finally, high-efficiency spin-multiplexed dual holographic images are experimentally realized with the third meta-device encoded with both resonant and geometric phases. Both near-field and far-field measurements are performed to characterize these devices, yielding results in agreement with full-wave simulations. The study paves the way to realize multifunctional, high-performance, and ultra-compact THz devices for applications in biology sensing, communications, and so on.

Full-space wavefront manipulation enabled by asymmetric photonic spin-orbit interactions

Optical metasurfaces empower complete wavefront manipulation of electromagnetic waves and have been found in extensive applications, whereas most of them work in either transmission or reflection space. Here, we demonstrate that two independent and arbitrary phase profiles in transmission and reflection spaces could be produced by a monolayer all-dielectric metasurface based on the asymmetric photonic spin-orbit interactions, realizing full-space wavefront independent manipulation. Furthermore, the supercell-based non-local approach is employed to suppress crosstalk between adjacent nanopillars in one supercell for broadband and high-efficiency wavefront manipulation in full space. Compared with the conventional unit cell-based local approach, such a method could improve efficiency about 10%. As a proof of concept, two metadevices are designed, in which the maximum diffraction efficiencies are ∼95.53%/∼74.07% within the wavelength range of 1500-1600 nm in reflection/transmission space under circularly polarized light incidence. This configuration may offer an efficient way for 2π-space holographic imaging, augmented reality, virtual reality technologies, three-dimensional imaging, and so forth.

Spin-decoupling of vertical cavity surface-emitting lasers with complete phase modulation using on-chip integrated Jones matrix metasurfaces

Polarization response of artificially structured nano-antennas can be exploited to design innovative optical components, also dubbed "vectorial metasurfaces", for the modulation of phase, amplitude, and polarization with subwavelength spatial resolution. Recent efforts in conceiving Jones matrix formalism led to the advancement of vectorial metasurfaces to independently manipulate any arbitrary phase function of orthogonal polarization states. Here, we are taking advantages of this formalism to design and experimentally validate the performance of CMOS compatible Jones matrix metasurfaces monolithically integrated with standard VCSELs for on-chip spin-decoupling and phase shaping. Our approach enables accessing the optical spin states of VCSELs in an ultra-compact way with previously unattainable phase controllability. By exploiting spin states as a new degree of freedom for laser wavefront engineering, our platform is capable of operating and reading-out the spin-momentum of lasers associated with injected spin carriers, which would potentially play a pivotal role for the development of emerging spin-optoelectronic devices.

Spin-Decoupled Interference Metasurfaces for Complete Complex-Vectorial-Field Control and Five-Channel Imaging

Light is a complex vectorial field characterized by its amplitude, phase, and polarization properties, which can be further represented by four basic parameters, that is, amplitudes and phases of two orthogonally polarized components. Controlling these parameters simultaneously and independently at will using metasurfaces are essential in arbitrarily manipulating the light propagation. However, most of the studies so far commonly require a great number of different meta-atoms or rely on diffraction under oblique incidence, which lack convenience and flexibility in design and implementation. Here, a new metasurface paradigm is proposed that can completely manipulate the amplitudes and phases of two spin components based on the interference effect, where only two different meta-atoms are applied. For proof-of-concept demonstration, two five-channel meta-holograms for imaging and information encryption are designed and experimentally characterized. The interference method provides a simple route toward compact complex and multifunctional meta-devices.

Full-space dual-helicity decoupled metasurface for a high-efficiency multi-folded reflective antenna

The independent tailoring of electromagnetic waves with different circular-polarized (CP) wavefront in both reflection and transmission channels is of broad scientific and technical interest, offering ultimate degrees of freedom in designing advanced devices with the merits of functionality integration and spatial exploitation. However, most metasurfaces only provide dependent wavefront control of dual-helicity in a single channel, restricting their applications to limited practical scenarios. Herein, we propose a full-space dual-helicity decoupled metasurface and apply it to assemble a multi-folded reflective antenna (MFRA) in the microwave regime. A multilayered chiral meta-atom is designed and optimized to reflect a particular helical wave while allowing the orthogonal helical wave to penetrate through, with simultaneous full span of phase modulations in both channels. When a uniform reflection and a hyperbolic transmission phase profile is imposed simultaneously on the metasurface in a polarization-selective manner, it can be engineered to conduct specular reflection for one helical wave and convergent transmission of the other helical wave. Combining the proposed metasurface with a metallic plate as a bottom reflector and an integrated microstrip patch antenna in the center of metasurface as a feed, a MFRA is realized with a low profile, high efficiency, and high polarization purity in a broad frequency band. The proposed design method of the dual-helicity decoupled metasurface and its antenna application provide opportunities for high-performance functional devices, promising more potential in future communication and detection systems.

Active multiband varifocal metalenses based on orbital angular momentum division multiplexing

Metalenses as miniature flat lenses exhibit a substantial potential in replacing traditional optical component. Although the metalenses have been intensively explored, their functions are limited by poor active ability, narrow operating band and small depth of field (DOF). Here, we show a dielectric metalens consisting of TiO₂ nanofins array with ultrahigh aspect ratio to realize active multiband varifocal function. Regulating the orbital angular momentum (OAM) by the phase assignment covering the 2π range, its focal lengths can be switched from 5 mm to 35 mm. This active optical multiplexing uses the physical properties of OAM channels to selectively address and decode the vortex beams. The multiband capability and large DOFs with conversion efficiency of 49% for this metalens are validated for both 532 nm and 633 nm, and the incidence wavelength can further change the focal lengths. This non-mechanical tunable metalens demonstrates the possibility of active varifocal metalenses.

A dielectric metalens consisting of ultrahigh aspect ratio TiO₂ nanofins array is demonstrated to realize active multiband varifocal functionality. By regulating the orbital angular momentum, the focal length can be switched from 5 mm to 35 mm with large DOFs.

Designing Highly Directional Luminescent Phased-Array Metasurfaces with Reciprocity-Based Simulations

Phased-array metasurfaces grant the ability to arbitrarily shape the wavefront of light. As such, they have been used as various optical elements including waveplates, lenses, and beam deflectors. Luminescent metasurfaces, on the other hand, have largely comprised uniform arrays and are therefore unable to provide the same control over the wavefront of emitted light. Recently, phased-array control of the wavefront of spontaneous emission has been experimentally demonstrated in luminescent phased-array metalenses and beam deflectors. However, current luminescent metasurface beam deflectors exhibit unidirectional emission for only p-polarized light. In this paper, we use a reciprocal simulation strategy to explain the polarization disparity and improve the directionality of incoherent emission from current quantum-well emitting phased-array metasurfaces. We also design complementary metasurfaces to direct emission from systems where emission originates from alternate quantum mechanical processes.

Multifunctional all-dielectric metasurface quarter-wave plates for polarization conversion and wavefront shaping

Different from conventional optical waveplates, which suffer from limited functionalities and bulky configurations, metasurfaces provide full-range birefringence control along with unprecedented capabilities of wavefront shaping at any wavelength range of interest with properly designed anisotropic meta-atoms, thereby resulting in miniaturized planar meta-waveplates with excellent and fancy functionalities beyond the conventional counterparts. In this Letter, we design a set of dielectric metasurface quarter-wave plates (QWPs) that enable efficient circular-to-linear polarization conversion along with complete phase control over the converted linearly polarized beam under circularly polarized (CP) excitation. Capitalizing on this meta-QWP platform, we numerically demonstrate two advanced multifunctional meta-QWPs (i.e., a beam-steerer and a focusing metalens) to generate different wavefronts with homogeneous and inhomogeneous linear polarization distributions under CP excitation, mimicking the functionalities of cascaded multi-stage optical components. Owing to the compactness, flexibility, and versatility, such meta-QWPs are capable of integrating more advanced applications in polarization optics.

Dynamic circular birefringence response with fractured geometric phase metasurface systems

Optical activity is a fundamental property of symmetry-broken three-dimensional systems and enables control of the polarization state of electromagnetic waves. This work introduces a type of reconfigurable geometric phase response in which shearing displacements between two Pancharatnam–Berry-phase metasurfaces transduce chiral symmetry breaking within nanoscale waveguide structures. These metasurface systems, termed fractured metasurface waveplates, can be tailored to support dynamically tunable, broadband circular birefringence responses. Polarization modulation is based on microscopic motions and uniquely enables high-speed modulation over large area apertures. Our system paves the way for new classes of nanophotonic devices that feature systems-level symmetry breaking for controlling electromagnetic waves, which is relevant for sensing, imaging, and quantum-control applications.

Control over symmetry breaking in three-dimensional electromagnetic systems offers a pathway to tailoring their optical activity. We introduce fractured Pancharatnam–Berry-phase metasurface systems, in which a full-waveplate geometric phase metasurface is fractured into two half-waveplate-based metasurfaces and actively configured using shear displacement. Local relative rotations between stacked half-nanowaveplates within the metasurface system are transduced by shear displacement, leading to dynamic modulation of their collective geometric phase properties. We apply this concept to pairs of periodic Pancharatnam–Berry-phase metasurfaces and experimentally show that these systems support arbitrary and reconfigurable broadband circular birefringence response. High-speed circular birefringence modulation is demonstrated with modest shearing speeds, indicating the potential for these concepts to dynamically control polarization states with fast temporal responses. We anticipate that fractured geometric phase metasurface systems will serve as a nanophotonic platform that leverages systems-level symmetry breaking to enable active electromagnetic wave control.

Emerging Long-Range Order from a Freeform Disordered Metasurface

Recently, disordered metasurfaces have attracted considerable interest due to their potential applications in imaging, holography, and wavefront shaping. However, how to emerge long-range ordered phase distribution in disordered metasurfaces remains an outstanding problem. Here, a general framework is proposed to generate a spatially homogeneous in-plane phase distribution from a disordered metasurface, by engineering disorder parameters together with topology optimization. As a proof-of-concept demonstration, an all-dielectric disordered supercell metasurface with relatively homogeneous in-plane phase fluctuation is designed by disorder parameter engineering, manifesting as polarization conversion-dependent random scattering or unidirectional transmission. Then, a topology optimization approach is utilized to overcome the lattice coupling effect and to further improve the homogeneity of complex electric field fluctuation. In comparison with the initial supercell metasurface, both the phase fluctuation range and the relative efficiency of the topology-optimized freeform metasurface are significantly improved, leading to a long-range ordered electric field distribution. Moreover, three experimental realizations are performed, all of which agree well with the theoretical results. This methodology may inspire more exotic optical phenomena and find more promising applications in disordered metasurfaces and disordered optics.

Broadband high-efficiency polarization-encoded meta-holograms based on 3-bit spin-decoupled reflective meta-atoms

Metasurfaces are engineered planar surfaces consisting of arrays of resonators for tailoring the electromagnetic wavefronts in a desirable way. However, the spin-locked issue of the geometric metasurfaces hinders simultaneous manipulation of both spins. In this work, a spin-decoupled information metasurface composed of simple C-shaped resonators is proposed to realize two different information channels under the orthogonal circularly polarized (CP) incidences. Based on the encoded digit '0' or '1', the diffusion scattering or a holographic image could be realized under the CP excitation in a broadband frequency range from 9 to 12 GHz. As an illustrative example, a 3-bit polarization-encoded meta-hologram is designed, fabricated, and characterized. The measured results agree very well with the numerical results, which gives the proposed method great potential in numerous applications such as holographic displays and information processing.

Super-resolution imaging based on radially polarized beam induced superoscillation using an all-dielectric metasurface

Superoscillation is a kind of phenomenon which can generate oscillation faster than the fastest component of a band-limited function. For optics, superoscillation is generated by coherence of low spatial frequency waves. It can bring a localized region named "hot spot", which has a smaller size than the diffraction-limit, and this character has potential applicaions in super-resolution imaging. Using a high-order radially polarized Laguerre-Gaussian beam tightly focused by high-NA objective lens, we can easily obtain and control the superoscillation hot spot. Using a metasurface, which has compact volume and sub-wavelength pixel size, we can generate the high-order radially polarized Laguerre-Gaussian beam more simply than conventional methods like using a liquid crystal mode converter. We first analyze the properties of unit cells of the metasurface and simulate the performance of the metasurface. Then we analyze the property of the tightly focused high-order radially polarized Laguerre-Gaussian beam and design a super-resolution imaging system using our designed metasurface. Therefore, the 2-fold lateral resolution enhancement is realized in our approach. This method can be used to improve lateral resolution in conventional confocal imaging systems.

Single-layered phase-change metasurfaces achieving efficient wavefront manipulation and reversible chiral transmission

Efficient control of the phase and polarization of light is of significant importance in modern optics and photonics. However, traditional methods are often accompanied with cascaded and bulky designs that cannot fulfill the ongoing demand for further integrations. Here, a single-layered metasurface composed of nonvolatile phase-change material Ge₂Sb₂Se₄Te₁ (GSST) is proposed with tunable spin-orbit interactions in subwavelength scale. According to the spin-dependent destructive or constructive interference, asymmetric transmission for circularly polarized incidence (extinction ratio > 8:1) can be achieved when GSST is in an amorphous state. Moreover, when GSST changes to crystalline state, reversed chiral transmission (extinction ratio > 12:1) can be observed due to the existence of intrinsic chirality. In addition, as the average cross-polarized transmitted amplitude is larger than 85%, arbitrary wavefront manipulations can be achieved in both states simultaneously based on the theory of Pancharatnam-Berry phase. As a proof of concept, several functional metasurface devices are designed and characterized to further demonstrate the validation of our design methodology. It is believed that these multifunctional devices with ultrahigh compactness are promising for various applications including chiroptical spectroscopy, EM communication, chiral imaging, and information encryption.

Room-temperature on-chip orbital angular momentum single-photon sources

On-chip photon sources carrying orbital angular momentum (OAM) are in demand for high-capacity optical information processing in both classical and quantum regimes. However, currently exploited integrated OAM sources have been primarily limited to the classical regime. Here, we demonstrate a room-temperature on-chip integrated OAM source that emits well-collimated single photons, with a single-photon purity of g⁽²⁾(0) ≈ 0.22, carrying entangled spin and OAM states and forming two spatially separated entangled radiation channels with different polarization properties. The OAM-encoded single photons are generated by efficiently outcoupling diverging surface plasmon polaritons excited with a deterministically positioned quantum emitter via Archimedean spiral gratings. Our OAM single-photon source platform bridges the gap between conventional OAM manipulation and nonclassical light sources, enabling high-dimensional and large-scale photonic quantum systems for quantum information processing.

Functional Metasurface Quarter-Wave Plates for Simultaneous Polarization Conversion and Beam Steering

The capability to manipulate the polarization state of light at the nanoscale is of paramount importance in many emerging research areas ranging from optical communication to quantum information processing. Gap-surface plasmon (GSP) metasurfaces, which provide advantages and abilities of molding reflected fields, have been demonstrated excellently suited for integration of multifunctional polarization optics into a single device. Here, we establish a versatile GSP metasurface platform based on nanoscale quarter-wave plates (nano-QWPs) that enable efficient circular-to-linear polarization conversion along with the complete phase control over reflected fields. Capitalizing on the nano-QWP design, we demonstrate, both theoretically and experimentally, how resonance and geometric phases can be used in concert to achieve independent and simultaneous phase modulation of both co- and cross-polarized circularly polarized (CP) waves by realizing arbitrary beam steering of co- and cross-polarized CP channels in a broadband near-infrared range. The GSP metasurface platform established in our work provides versatile and flexible solutions to enrich multiple functionalities for diversified metasurface-based polarization optics exploited in modern integrated photonic devices and systems.

Helicity-dependent continuous varifocal metalens based on bilayer dielectric metasurfaces

Metasurfaces offer a unique platform to realize flat lenses, reducing the size and complexity of imaging systems and thus enabling new imaging modalities. In this paper, we designed a bilayer helicity-dependent continuous varifocal dielectric metalens in the near-infrared range. The first layer consists of silicon nanopillars and functions as a half-wave plate, providing the helicity-dependent metasurface by combining propagation phase and geometric phase. The second layer consists of phase-change material Sb₂S₃ nanopillars and provides tunable propagation phases. Upon excitation with the circularly polarized waves possessing different helicities, the metalens can generate helicity-dependent longitudinal focal spots. Under the excitation of linear polarized light, the helicity-dependent dual foci are generated. The focal lengths in this metalens can be continuously tuned by the crystallization fraction of Sb₂S₃. The zoom range is achieved from 32.5 µm to 37.2 µm for right circularly polarized waves and from 50.5 µm to 60.9 µm for left circularly polarized waves. The simulated focusing efficiencies are above 75% and 87% for the circularly and linearly polarized waves, respectively. The proposed metalens has potential applications in miniaturized devices, including compact optical communication systems, imaging, and medical devices.

Design of Metasurface with Nanoslits on Elliptical Curves for Generation of Dual-Channel Vector Beams

The manipulations of nanoscale multi-channel vector beams (VBs) by metasurfaces hold potential applications in various important fields. In this paper, the metasurface with two sets of nanoslits arranged on elliptic curves was proposed to generate the dual-channel focused vector beams (FVBs). Each set of nanoslits was composed of the in-phase and the out-of-phase groups of nanoslits to introduce the constructive interference and destructive interference of the output light field of the nanoslits, focusing the converted spin component and eliminating the incident spin component at the focal point. The two sets of nanoslits for the channels at the two focal points were interleaved on the same ellipses, and by setting their parameters independently, the FVBs in the two channels are generated under illumination of linearly polarized light, while their orders and polarization states of FVBs were controlled independently. The generation of the FVBs with the designed metasurfaces was demonstrated by the finite-difference time domain (FDTD) simulations and by the experimental verifications. The work in this paper is of great significance for the generation of miniaturized multi-channel VBs and for broadening the applications of metasurfaces.

Phase gradient protection of stored spatially multimode perfect optical vortex beams in a diffused rubidium vapor

We experimentally investigate the optical storage of perfect optical vortex (POV) and spatially multimode perfect optical vortex (MPOV) beams via electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) in a hot vapor cell. In particular, we study the role that phase gradients and phase singularities play in reducing the blurring of the retrieved images due to atomic diffusion. Three kinds of manifestations are enumerated to demonstrate such effect. Firstly, the suppression of the ring width broadening is more prominent for POVs with larger orbital angular momentum (OAM). Secondly, the retrieved double-ring MPOV beams' profiles present regular dark singularity distributions that are related to their vortex charge difference. Thirdly, the storage fidelities of the triple-ring MPOVs are substantially improved by designing line phase singularities between multi-ring MPOVs with the same OAM number but π offset phases between adjacent rings. Our experimental demonstration of MPOV storage opens new opportunities for increasing data capacity in quantum memories by spatial multiplexing, as well as the generation and manipulation of complex optical vortex arrays.

Compound Vector Light Generator Based on a Metasurface

In view of wide applications of vector light with a non-uniform polarization state, a compound vector light generator is proposed to generate compound vector light. One compound vector light contains two or more non-uniform polarization modes and several annular intensities, which can carry more polarization information and possess higher dimensional singularity. The proposed compound vector light generator consists of cross nanoholes with high polarization conversion efficiency; it works under linear polarized light, and the mode of the generated compound vector light can be adjusted through rotating cross nanoholes. The structure parameters of the compound vector light generator are optimized with the aid of numerical simulation, and the simulation results for the generated light fields verify the performance of the proposed device. The advancement of the compound vector light and metasurface design of the compound vector light generator can assist in the exploration of novel singular properties of light fields and the broadening of applications of vector light fields.
