Probing Temperature-Induced Plasmonic Nonlinearity: Unveiling Opto-Thermal Effects on Light Absorption and Near-Field Enhancement

Precise measurement and control of local heating in plasmonic nanostructures are vital for diverse nanophotonic devices. Despite significant efforts, challenges in understanding temperature-induced plasmonic nonlinearity persist, particularly in light absorption and near-field enhancement due to the absence of suitable measurement techniques. This study presents an approach allowing simultaneous measurements of light absorption and near-field enhancement through angle-resolved near-field scanning optical microscopy with iterative opto-thermal analysis. We revealed gold thin films exhibit sublinear nonlinearity in near-field enhancement due to nonlinear opto-thermal effects, while light absorption shows both sublinear and superlinear behaviors at varying thicknesses. These observations align with predictions from a simple harmonic oscillation model, in which changes in damping parameters affect light absorption and field enhancement differently. The sensitivity of our method was experimentally examined by measuring the opto-thermal responses of three-dimensional nanostructure arrays. Our findings have direct implications for advancing plasmonic applications, including photocatalysis, photovoltaics, photothermal effects, and surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy.

Mapping electric field components of superchiral field with photo-induced force

Circular dichroism (CD) of materials, difference in absorbance of left- and right-circularly polarized light, is a standard measure of chirality. Detection of the chirality for individual molecules is a frontier in analytical chemistry and optical science. The usage of a superchiral electromagnetic field near metallic structure is one promising way because it boosts the molecular far-field CD signal. However, it is still elusive as to how such a field actually interacts with the molecules. The cause is that the distribution of the electric field vector is unclear in the vicinity of the metal surface. In particular, it is difficult to directly measure the localized field, e.g., using aperture-type scanning near-field optical microscope. Here, we calculate the three-dimensional (3D) electric field vector, including the longitudinal field, and reveal the whole figure of the near-field CD on a two-dimensional (2D) plane just above the metal surface. Moreover, we propose a method to measure the near-field CD of the whole superchiral field by photo-induced force microscopy (PiFM), where the optical force distribution is mapped in a scanning 2D plane. We numerically demonstrate that, although the presence of the metallic probe tip affects the 3D electric field distribution, the PiFM is sufficiently capable to evaluate the superchiral field. Unveiling the whole figure of near-field is significantly beneficial in obtaining rich information of single molecules with multiple orientations and in analyzing the boosted far-field CD signals.

Optical Imaging of a Single Molecule with Subnanometer Resolution by Photoinduced Force Microscopy

Visualizing the optical response of individual molecules is a long-standing goal in catalysis, molecular nanotechnology, and biotechnology. The molecular response is dominated not only by the electronic states in their isolated environment but also by neighboring molecules and the substrate. Information about the transfer of energy and charge in real environments is essential for the design of the desired molecular functions. However, visualizing these factors with spatial resolution beyond the molecular scale has been challenging. Here, by combining photoinduced force microscopy and Kelvin probe force microscopy, we have mapped the photoinduced force in a pentacene bilayer with a spatial resolution of 0.6 nm and observed its "multipole excitation". We identified the excitation as the result of energy and charge transfer between the molecules and to the Ag substrate. These findings can be achieved only by combining microscopy techniques to simultaneously visualize the optical response of the molecules and the charge transfer between the neighboring environments. Our approach and findings provide insights into designing molecular functions by considering the optical response at each step of layering molecules.

Atomic Force Microscopy-Based Nanoscale Infrared Techniques for Catalysis

Atomic force microscopy (AFM)-based nanoscale infrared (nano-IR) techniques have found extensive application in the fields of chemistry, physics, and materials science, enabling the visualization of nanoscale features that surpass the optical diffraction limit. More recently, tentative investigations have been conducted into the use of these techniques in the field of catalysis, particularly in studying interfacial processes involving molecular monolayer samples. IR nanoimaging and nanospectroscopy offer unique perspectives on catalytic processes. Considering the specific characteristics of catalytic processes, this Perspective highlights the need for and reviews the current status of AFM-based nano-IR techniques for catalysis investigations, which aims to contribute to a deeper understanding of the nanoscale mechanisms underlying the catalytic processes.

Nanoscopic Observation of Chiro-Optical Force

Nanoscopic observation of chiro-optical phenomena is essential in wide scientific areas but has measurement difficulties; hence, its physics is still unknown. To obtain a full understanding of the physics of chiro-optical systems and derive the full potentials, it is essential to perform an in situ observation of the chiro-optical effect from the individual parts because the macroscopic chiro-optical effect cannot be translated directly into microscopic effects. In the present study, we observed the chiro-optical responses at the nanoscale level by detecting the chiro-optical forces, which were generated by illumination of the material-probe system with circularly polarized light. The induced optical force was dependent on the handedness and wavelength of the incident circularly polarized light and was well correlated to the electromagnetically simulated differential intensity of the longitudinal electric field. Our results facilitate the clarification of chiro-optical phenomena at the nanoscale level and could innovate chiro-optical nanotechnologies.

Enantioselective optical trapping of single chiral molecules in the superchiral field vicinity of metal nanostructures

In this study, we theoretically analyzed the optical force acting on single chiral molecules in the plasmon field induced by metallic nanostructures. Using the extended discrete dipole approximation, we quantitatively examined the optical response of single chiral molecules in the localized plasmon by numerically analyzing the internal polarization structure of the molecules obtained from quantum chemical calculations, without phenomenological treatment. We evaluated the chiral gradient force due to the optical chirality gradient of the superchiral field near the metallic nanostructures for chiral molecules. Our calculation method can be used to evaluate the molecular-orientation dependence and rotational torque by considering the chiral spatial structure inside the molecules. We theoretically showed that the superchiral field induced by chiral plasmonic nanostructures can be used to selectively optically capture the enantiomers of a single chiral molecule.

Development of low-temperature and ultrahigh-vacuum photoinduced force microscopy

In this paper, we develop optical and electronic systems for photoinduced force microscopy (PiFM) that can measure photoinduced forces under low temperature and ultrahigh vacuum (LT-UHV) without artifacts. For our LT-UHV PiFM, light is irradiated from the side on the tip-sample junction, which can be adjusted through the combination of an objective lens inside the vacuum chamber and a 90° mirror outside the vacuum chamber. We measured photoinduced forces due to the electric field enhancement between the tip and the Ag surface, and confirmed that photoinduced force mapping and measurement of photoinduced force curves were possible using the PiFM that we developed. The Ag surface was used to measure the photoinduced force with high sensitivity, and it is effective in enhancing the electric field using the plasmon gap mode between the metal tip and the metal surface. Additionally, we confirmed the necessity of Kelvin feedback during the measurement of photoinduced forces, to avoid artifacts due to electrostatic forces, by measuring photoinduced forces on organic thin films. The PiFM, operating under low temperature and ultrahigh vacuum developed here, is a promising tool to investigate the optical properties of various materials with very high spatial resolution.

Near-field circular dichroism of single molecules

Near-field images of molecules provide information about their excited orbitals, giving rise to photonic and chemical functions. Such information is crucial to the elucidation of the full potential of molecules as components in functional materials and devices at the nanoscale. However, direct imaging inside single molecules with a complex structure in the near-field is still challenging because it requires in situ observation at a higher resolution than the molecular scale. Here, using a proven theoretical method that has demonstrated sub-nanoscale resolution based on photoinduced force microscopy (PiFM) experiment [Nat. Commun.12, 3865 (2021)10.1038/s41467-021-24136-2], we propose an approach to obtaining the near-field imaging with spatial patterns of electronic transitions of single molecules. We use an extended discrete dipole approximation method that incorporates microscopic nonlocal optical response of molecules and demonstrate that PiFM can visualize circular-dichroism signal patterns at sub-nanometer scale for both optically allowed and forbidden transitions. The result will open the possibility for the direct observation of complex spatial patterns of electronic transitions in a single molecule, providing insight into the optical function of single molecules and helping realize new functional materials and devices.

Optical Force of Bessel Pincer Light-Sheets Beam on a Dielectric Sphere of Arbitrary Size

In the framework of Generalized Lorenz-Mie theory (GLMT), based on the expansion results of electromagnetic field radiation components of Bessel pincer light sheets beam acting on dielectric particles of arbitrary size, the expression of radiation force components in a Cartesian coordinate system is obtained by using the Maxwell stress tensor method. On the one hand, the effects of the refractive index and the equivalent radius of spherical particles on the distribution of radiation force are discussed; On the other hand, the influence of beam scaling parameter and beam order of Bessel pincer light sheets beam on the distribution of radiation force are investigated. The results indicate that the changes of particle's refractive index and effective radius only affect the distribution of radiation force. However, the beam scaling parameter and beam order of Bessel pincer light sheets beam have a very sharp impact on the convergence position, distribution range and bending degree far away from the wave source of the radiation force. Single-beam optical tweezers using the self-focusing and self-bending Bessel pincer light-sheets beam are crucial for applications such as single molecule biophysics, optical manipulation and particle separation/clearing.

Photovoltaic and photothermal effects induced by visible laser radiation in atomic force microscopy probes

Excitation of electrons into higher energy states in solid state materials can be induced by absorption of visible light, a physical process generally studied by optical absorption spectroscopy. A promising approach for improving the spatial resolution of optical absorption spectroscopy beyond the diffraction limit is the detection of photoinduced forces by an atomic force microscope operating under wavelength-dependent light irradiation. Here, we report on a combined photovoltaic/photothermal effect induced by the absorption of visible light by the microscope probes. By monitoring the photoinduced modifications of the oscillation of the probes, it is found that the oscillation phase-voltage parabolic signals display specific fingerprints which depend on light intensity and the nature of the materials composing the probes. In particular, a localized surface photovoltage (SPV) is evidenced at the tip apex of uncoated Si probes, while none is observed on Au-coated Si probes. The photothermal effects are distinguished from photovoltaic effects by specific shifts of the phase-voltage parabolas. The findings are relevant for the whole range of atomic force microscopy techniques making use of visible light as an additional means of local optical characterization.

Protein-coated nanostructured surfaces affect the adhesion of Escherichia coli

Developing new implant surfaces with anti-adhesion bacterial properties used for medical devices remains a challenge. Here we describe a novel study investigating nanotopography influences on bacterial adhesion on surfaces with controlled interspatial nanopillar distances. The surfaces were coated with proteins (fibrinogen, collagen, serum and saliva) prior to E. coli-WT adhesion under flow conditions. PiFM provided chemical mapping and showed that proteins adsorbed both between and onto the nanopillars with a preference for areas between the nanopillars. E. coli-WT adhered least to protein-coated areas with low surface nanopillar coverage, most to surfaces coated with saliva, while human serum led to the lowest adhesion. Protein-coated nanostructured surfaces affected the adhesion of E. coli-WT.

Optical force spectroscopy for measurement of nonlinear optical coefficient of single nanoparticles through optical manipulation

Compared with manipulation of microparticles with optical tweezers and control of atomic motion with atom cooling, the manipulation of nanoscale objects is challenging because light exerts a significantly weaker force on nanoparticles than on microparticles. The complex interaction of nanoparticles with the environmental solvent media adds to this challenge. In recent years, optical manipulation using electronic resonance effects has garnered interest because it has enabled researchers to enhance the force as well as sort nanoparticles by their quantum mechanical properties. Especially, a precise observation of the motion of nanoparticles irradiated by resonant light enables the precise measurement of the material parameters of single nanoparticles. Conventional spectroscopic methods of measurement are based on indirect processes involving energy dissipation, such as thermal dissipation and light scattering. This study proposes a theoretical method to measure the nonlinear optical constant based on the optical force. The nonlinear susceptibility of single nanoparticles can be directly measured by evaluating the transportation distance of particles through pure momentum exchange. We extrapolate an experimentally verified method of measuring the linear absorption coefficient of single nanoparticles by the optical force to determine the nonlinear absorption coefficient. To this end, we simulate the third-order nonlinear susceptibility of the target particles with the kinetic analysis of nanoparticles at the solid-liquid interface incorporating the Brownian motion. The results show that optical manipulation can be used as nonlinear optical spectroscopy utilizing direct exchange of momentum. To the best of our knowledge, this is currently the only way to measure the nonlinear coefficient of individual single nanoparticles.

Photo-induced force microscopy (PiFM) - principles and implementations

Photo-induced force microscopy (PiFM) is a scan probe technique that offers images with spectroscopic contrast at a spatial resolution in the nanometer range. PiFM utilizes the non-propagating, enhanced near field at the apex of a sharp tip to locally induce a polarization in the sample, which in turn produces an additional force acting on the cantilevered tip. This photo-induced force, though in the pN range or less, can be extracted from the oscillation properties of the cantilever, thus enabling the generation of photo-induced force maps. Since its inception in 2010, the PiFM technique has grown into a useful nano-spectrocopic tool that has expanded its reach in terms of imaging capabilities and applications. In this review, we present various technical implementations of the PiFM approach. In addition, we discuss the physical origin of the PiFM signal, highlighting the contributions from dipole-dipole forces as well as forces that derive from photo-thermal processes.

High-Resolution Measurement of Molecular Internal Polarization Structure by Photoinduced Force Microscopy

Near-field interactions between metallic surfaces and single molecules play an essential role in the application of metamaterials. To reveal the near-field around a photo-irradiated single molecule on the metallic surface, high-resolution photo-assisted scanning microscopy is required. In this study, we theoretically propose photoinduced force microscopy (PiFM) measurements of single molecules at the atomic resolution. For experimental demonstration, we performed a numerical calculation of PiFM images of various transition states, including optical forbidden transitions, and interpreted them in terms of the interaction between the molecular internal polarization structures and localized plasmon. We also clarified the critical role of atomic-scale structures on the tip surface for high-resolution PiFM measurements.
