Controlled multi-photon subtraction with cascaded Rydberg superatoms as single-photon absorbers

Subtraction and Addition of Propagating Photons by Two-Level Emitters

Coherent manipulation of quantum states of light is key to photonic quantum information processing. In this Letter, we show that a passive two-level nonlinearity suffices to implement non-Gaussian quantum operations on propagating field modes. In particular, the collective light-matter interaction can efficiently extract a single photon from a multiphoton input wave packet to an orthogonal temporal mode. We accurately describe the single-photon subtraction process by elements of an intuitive quantum-trajectory model. By employing this process, quantum information protocols gain orders of magnitude improved efficiency over heralded schemes with linear optics. The reverse process can be used to add photons one by one to a single wave packet mode and compose arbitrarily large Fock states with a finite total success probability >96.7%.

Deterministic single photon subtraction with a cascade of waveguide-coupled atoms

We present a specialized photon subtraction scheme that allows for the deterministic extraction of single photons from multiphoton states while preserving the input single-photon states unaltered. The proposed device integrates two Λ-type emitters with transitions selectively coupled to a single chiral waveguide through single photon Raman interaction (SPRINT). We develop a comprehensive theoretical model for the system using the input-output formalism within the SLH framework and conduct numerical simulations to analyze its interaction with traveling few-photon pulses of coherent light. We use these simulations to predict the scheme's operation and highlight how this two-emitter extension improves the original SPRINT-based deterministic single-photon subtraction when it comes to implementing undetectable photon number splitting attack on a quantum key distribution channel.

Quantum Interference between Fundamentally Different Processes Is Enabled by Shaped Input Wavefunctions

This work presents a general framework for quantum interference between processes that can involve different fundamental particles or quasi-particles. This framework shows that shaping input wavefunctions is a versatile and powerful tool for producing and controlling quantum interference between distinguishable pathways, beyond previously explored quantum interference between indistinguishable pathways. Two examples of quantum interference enabled by shaping in interactions between free electrons, bound electrons, and photons are presented: i) the vanishing of the zero-loss peak by destructive quantum interference when a shaped electron wavepacket couples to light, under conditions where the electron's zero-loss peak otherwise dominates; ii) quantum interference between free electron and atomic (bound electron) spontaneous emission processes, which can be significant even when the free electron and atom are far apart, breaking the common notion that a free electron and an atom must be close by to significantly affect each other's processes. Conclusions show that emerging quantum wave-shaping techniques unlock the door to greater versatility in light-matter interactions and other quantum processes in general.

Many-Body Radiative Decay in Strongly Interacting Rydberg Ensembles

When atoms are excited to high-lying Rydberg states they interact strongly with dipolar forces. The resulting state-dependent level shifts allow us to study many-body systems displaying intriguing nonequilibrium phenomena, such as constrained spin systems, and are at the heart of numerous technological applications, e.g., in quantum simulation and computation platforms. Here, we show that these interactions also have a significant impact on dissipative effects caused by the inevitable coupling of Rydberg atoms to the surrounding electromagnetic field. We demonstrate that their presence modifies the frequency of the photons emitted from the Rydberg atoms, making it dependent on the local neighborhood of the emitting atom. Interactions among Rydberg atoms thus turn spontaneous emission into a many-body process which manifests, in a thermodynamically consistent Markovian setting, in the emergence of collective jump operators in the quantum master equation governing the dynamics. We discuss how this collective dissipation-stemming from a mechanism different from the much studied superradiance and subradiance-accelerates decoherence and affects dissipative phase transitions in Rydberg ensembles.
