Decreasing extents of Archean serpentinization contributed to the rise of an oxidized atmosphere

Evaluating Serpentinization as a Source of Phosphite to Microbial Communities in Hydrothermal Vents

Previous studies have documented the presence of phosphite, a reduced and highly soluble form of phosphorus, in serpentinites, which has led to the hypothesis that serpentinizing hydrothermal vents could have been an important source of bioavailable phosphorus for early microbial communities in the Archean. Here, we test this hypothesis by evaluating the genomic hallmarks of phosphorus usage in microbial communities living in modern hydrothermal vents with and without influence from serpentinization. These genomic analyses are combined with results from a geochemical model that calculates phosphorus speciation during serpentinization as a function of temperature, water:rock ratio, and lithology at thermodynamic equilibrium. We find little to no genomic evidence of phosphite use in serpentinizing environments at the Voltri Massif or the Von Damm hydrothermal field at the Mid Cayman Rise, but relatively more in the Lost City hydrothermal field, Coast Range Ophiolite Microbial Observatory, The Cedars, and chimney samples from Old City hydrothermal field and Prony Bay hydrothermal field, as well as in the non-serpentinizing hydrothermal vents at Axial Seamount. Geochemical modeling shows that phosphite production is favored at ca 275°C-325°C and low water:rock ratios, which may explain previous observations of phosphite in serpentinite rocks; however, most of the initial phosphate is trapped in apatite during serpentinization, suppressing the absolute phosphite yield. As a result, phosphite from serpentinizing vents could have supported microbial growth around olivine minerals in chimney walls and suspended aggregates, but it is unlikely to have fueled substantial primary productivity in diffusely venting fluids during life's origin and evolution in the Archean unless substrates equivalent to dunites (composed of > 90 wt% olivine) were more common.

Observational constraints on the process and products of Martian serpentinization

The alteration of olivine-rich rocks to serpentine minerals, (hydr)oxides, and aqueous hydrogen through serpentinization is long thought to have influenced the distribution of habitable environments on early Mars and the evolution of the early Martian hydrosphere and atmosphere. Nevertheless, the planetary importance of Martian serpentinization has remained a matter of debate. To constrain the process and products of Martian serpentinization, we studied serpentinized iron-rich olivines from the 1.1-billion-year Duluth Complex. These data indicate that serpentinized iron-rich olivine would have been accompanied by a fivefold increase in hydrogen production relative to serpentinized terrestrial mantle peridotites. In contrast to previous expectations, this style of serpentinization yields hisingerite as the dominant iron serpentine mineral at comparatively low temperature and pH, consistent with meteorite mineralogy and in situ rover data. The widespread occurrence of oxidized iron-bearing phyllosilicates in highly magnetized regions of the Martian crust supports the hypothesis that serpentinization was more pervasive on early Mars than currently estimated.

Formation and Preservation of Brucite and Awaruite in Serpentinized and Tectonized Mantle in Central British Columbia: Implications for Carbon Mineralization and Nickel Mining

The serpentinized and tectonized mantle in the Decar area in central British Columbia, including rocks that host the Baptiste Ni Deposit, consists of several ultramafic protolith lithologies that were variably altered to serpentinite, ophicarbonate, soapstone and listvenite. Alteration minerals include brucite (Mg[OH]2), which can be used to sequester atmospheric CO2 and awaruite (Ni3Fe), which is an economically attractive nickel alloy. This study examines the formation and preservation of brucite (up to 13 wt%) and awaruite (up to 0.12 wt%) in the Decar area and demonstrates that both minerals are formed during serpentinization and destroyed during carbonate alteration of mantle rocks. We distinguish five alteration stages that occurred primarily in a continental environment: (1) low-temperature lizardite serpentinization from meteoric fluids at <300°C, (2) high-temperature antigorite (±metamorphic olivine) serpentinization from metamorphic fluids at >300°C, (3) carbonate alteration, (4) chrysotile veining (±antigorite) serpentinization, and (5) later carbonate alteration from crustal fluids. Brucite formed primarily during late lizardite serpentinization and is most abundant in rocks that originally had high olivine–pyroxene ratios. Awaruite formed during both late lizardite serpentinization and during antigorite serpentinization and is most abundant in serpentinized olivine-rich harzburgite. The stability and abundance of brucite and awaruite are controlled by both the host rock composition and degree of serpentinization. The coexistence of brucite and awaruite reflects formation in serpentinized olivine-rich peridotite and creates an opportunity for carbon-neutral nickel mining.
