Mechanical bonding of rigid MORFs using a tetratopic rotaxane

The preparation of highly rigid cobalt(II)- and copper(II)-organic frameworks incorporating a tetralactam [2]rotaxane as a ligand is described. The interlocked ligand is functionalized with two pairs of carboxylate groups placed at each counterpart, thus limiting its dynamics within the crystal. The solid structure of the metal-organic rotaxane frameworks showed different, unprecedented polycatenation modes of grids, depending on the employed metal, providing great rigidity to the structures. This rigidity has been evaluated by using single crystal X-ray diffraction analyses of the cobalt(II)-organic frameworks embedded in different solvents, observing that the lattices remain unchanged. Thus, this research demonstrates that rigid and robust materials with permanent porosity can be achieved using dynamic ligands.

Hydrogen-bond linking is crucial for growing ice VII embryos

We use molecular dynamics simulations to examine the homogeneous nucleation of ice VII from metastable liquid water. An unsupervised machine learning classification identifies two distinct local structures composing Ice VII nuclei. The seeding method, combined with the classical nucleation theory (CNT), predicts the solid-liquid interfacial free energy, consistent with the value from the mold integration method. Meanwhile, the nucleation rates estimated from the CNT framework and brute force spontaneous nucleations are inconsistent, and we discuss the reasons for this discrepancy. Structural and dynamical heterogeneities suggest that the potential birthplace for an ice VII embryo is relatively ordered, although not necessarily relatively immobile. Moreover, we demonstrate that without the formation of hydrogen-bond links, ice VII embryos do not grow.

Advancements and strategic approaches in catenane synthesis

Catenanes, a distinctive category of mechanically interlocked molecules composed of intertwined macrocycles, have undergone significant advancements since their initial stages characterized by inefficient statistical synthesis methods. Through the aid of molecular recognition processes and principles of self-assembly, a diverse array of catenanes with intricate structures can now be readily accessed utilizing template-directed synthetic protocols. The rapid evolution and emergence of this field have catalyzed the design and construction of artificial molecular switches and machines, leading to the development of increasingly integrated functional systems and materials. This review endeavors to explore the pivotal advancements in catenane synthesis from its inception, offering a comprehensive discussion of the synthetic methodologies employed in recent years. By elucidating the progress made in synthetic approaches to catenanes, our aim is to provide a clearer understanding of the future challenges in further advancing catenane chemistry from a synthetic perspective.

Stimulus-Induced Dynamic Behavior Regulation of Flexible Crystals through the Tuning of Module Rigidity

Introducing dynamic behavior into periodic frameworks has borne fruit in the form of flexible porous crystals. The detailed molecular design of frameworks in order to control their collective dynamics is of particular interest, for example, to achieve stimulus-induced behavior. Herein, by varying the degree of rigidity of ditopic pillar linkers, two isostructural flexible metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) with common rigid supermolecular building bilayers were constructed. The subtle substitution of single (in bibenzyl-4,4'-dicarboxylic acid; H2BBDC) with double (in 4,4'-stilbenedicarboxylic acid; H2SDC) C-C bonds in pillared linkers led to markedly different flexible behavior of these two MOFs. Upon the removal of guest molecules, both frameworks clearly show reversible single-crystal-to-single-crystal transformations involving the cis-trans conformation change and a resulting swing of the corresponding pillar linkers, which gives rise to Flex-Cd-MOF-1a and Flex-Cd-MOF-2a, respectively. Strikingly, a more favorable gas-induced dynamic behavior in Flex-Cd-MOF-2a was verified in detail by stepwise C3H6/C3H8 sorption isotherms and the corresponding in situ powder X-ray diffraction experiments. These insights are strongly supported by molecular modeling studies on the sorption mechanism that explores the sorption landscape. Furthermore, a consistency between the macroscopic elasticity and microscopic flexibility of Flex-Cd-MOF-2 was observed. This work fuels a growing interest in developing MOFs with desired chemomechanical functions and presents detailed insights into the origins of flexible MOFs.

Integrating spin-dependent emission and dielectric switching in FeII catenated metal-organic frameworks

Mechanically interlocked molecules (MIMs) including famous catenanes show switchable physical properties and attract continuous research interest due to their potential application in molecular devices. The advantages of using spin crossover (SCO) materials here are enormous, allowing for control through diverse stimuli and highly specific functions, and enabling the transfer of the internal dynamics of MIMs from solution to solid state, leading to macroscopic applications. Herein, we report the efficient self-assembly of catenated metal-organic frameworks (termed catena-MOFs) induced by stacking interactions, through the combination of rationally selected flexible and conjugated naphthalene diimide-based bis-pyridyl ligand (BPND), [MI(CN)2]- (M = Ag or Au) and Fe2+ in a one-step strategy. The obtained bimetallic Hofmann-type SCO-MOFs [FeII(BPND){Ag(CN)2}2]·3CHCl3 (1Ag) and [FeII(BPND{Au(CN)2}2]·2CHCl3·2H2O (1Au) possess a unique three-dimensional (3D) catena-MOF constructed from the polycatenation of two-dimensional (2D) layers with hxl topology. Both complexes undergo thermal- and light-induced SCO. Significantly, abnormal increases in the maximum emission intensity and dielectric constant can be detected simultaneously with the switching of spin states. This research opens up SCO-actuated bistable MIMs that afford dual functionality of coupled fluorescence emission and dielectricity.

Unconventional mechanical and thermal behaviours of MOF CALF-20

CALF-20 was recently identified as a benchmark sorbent for CO2 capture at the industrial scale, however comprehensive atomistic insight into its mechanical/thermal properties under working conditions is still lacking. In this study, we developed a general-purpose machine-learned potential (MLP) for the CALF-20 MOF framework that predicts the thermodynamic and mechanical properties of the structure at finite temperatures within first-principles accuracy. Interestingly, CALF-20 was demonstrated to exhibit both negative area compression and negative thermal expansion. Most strikingly, upon application of the tensile strain along the [001] direction, CALF-20 was shown to display a distinct two-step elastic deformation behaviour, unlike typical MOFs that undergo plastic deformation after elasticity. Furthermore, this MOF was shown to exhibit a fracture strain of up to 27% along the [001] direction at room temperature comparable to that of MOF glasses. These abnormal thermal and mechanical properties make CALF-20 as attractive material for flexible and stretchable electronics and sensors.

MEMS Resonant Beam with Outstanding Uniformity of Sensitivity and Temperature Distribution for Accurate Gas Sensing and On-Chip TGA

Micromechanical resonators have aroused growing interest as biological and chemical sensors, and microcantilever beams are the main research focus. Recently, a resonant microcantilever with an integrated heater has been applied in on-chip thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). However, there is a strong relationship between the mass sensitivity of a resonant microcantilever and the location of adsorbed masses. Different sampling positions will cause sensitivity differences, which will result in an inaccurate calculation of mass change. Herein, an integrated H-shaped resonant beam with uniform mass sensitivity and temperature distribution is proposed and developed to improve the accuracy of bio/chemical sensing and TGA applications. Experiments verified that the presented resonant beam possesses much better uniformity of sensitivity and temperature distribution compared with resonant microcantilevers. Gas-sensing and TGA experiments utilizing the integrated resonant beam were also carried out and exhibited good measurement accuracy.

Metal-Assisted Carbohydrate Assembly

The sequence-controlled assembly of nucleic acids and amino acids into well-defined superstructures constitutes one of the most revolutionary technologies in modern science. The elaboration of such superstructures from carbohydrates, however, remains elusive and largely unexplored on account of their intrinsic constitutional and configurational complexity, not to mention their inherent conformational flexibility. Here, we report the bottom-up assembly of two classes of hierarchical superstructures that are formed from a highly flexible cyclo-oligosaccharide─namely, cyclofructan-6 (CF-6). The formation of coordinative bonds between the oxygen atoms of CF-6 and alkali metal cations (i) locks a myriad of flexible conformations of CF-6 into a few rigid conformations, (ii) bridges adjacent CF-6 ligands, and (iii) gives rise to the multiple-level assembly of three extended frameworks. The hierarchical superstructures present in these frameworks have been shown to modulate their nanomechanical properties. This research highlights the unique opportunities of constructing convoluted superstructures from carbohydrates and should encourage future endeavors in this underinvestigated field of science.

Copper-based electrocatalyst for hydrogen evolution in water

In aqueous pH 7 phosphate buffer, during controlled potential electrolysis (CPE) at -1.10 V vs. Ag|AgCl the literature square planar copper complex, [CuIILEt]BF4 (1), forms a heterogeneous deposit on the glassy carbon working electrode (GCWE) that is a stable and effective hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) electrocatalyst. Specifically, CPE for 20 hours using a small GCWE (A = 0.071 cm2) gave a turnover number (TON) of 364, with ongoing activity. During CPE the brownish-yellow colour of the working solution fades, and a deposit is observed on the small GCWE. Repeating this CPE experiment in a larger cell with a larger GCWE (A = 2.7 cm2), connected to a gas chromatograph, resulted in a TON of 2628 after 2.6 days, with FE = 93%, and with activity ongoing. After this CPE, the working solution had faded to nearly colourless, and visual inspection of the large GCWE showed a material had deposited on the surface. In a 'rinse and repeat test', this heterogeneous deposit was used for further CPE, in a freshly prepared working solution minus fresh catalyst, which resulted in similar ongoing HER activity to before, consistent with the surface deposited material being the active HER catalyst. EDS, PXRD and SEM analysis of this deposit shows that copper and oxygen are the main components present, most likely comprising copper and copper(I) oxide ((Cu2O)n) formed from 1. The use of 1 leads to a deposit that is more catalytically active than that formed when starting with a simple copper salt (control), likely due to it forming a more robustly attached deposit, which also enables the observed long-lived catalytic activity.

Prediction of Metal-Organic Frameworks with Phase Transition via Machine Learning

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) possess a virtually unlimited number of potential structures. Although the latter enables an efficient route to control the structure-related functional properties of MOFs, it still complicates the prediction and searching for an optimal structure for specific application. Next to prediction of the MOFs for gas sorption/separation and catalysis via machine learning (ML), we report on ML to find MOFs demonstrating a phase transition (PT). On the basis of an available QMOF database (7463 frameworks), we create and train the autoencoder followed by training the classifier of MOFs from a unique database with experimentally confirmed PT. This makes it possible to identify MOFs with a high potential for PT and evaluate the most likely stimulus for it (guest molecules or temperature/pressure). The formed list of available MOFs for PT allows us to discuss their structural features and opens an opportunity to search for phase change MOFs for diverse physical/chemical application.

Metal ion assistant transformation strategy to synthesize catechol-based metal-organic frameworks from Ti3C2Tx precursors

Chemical transformation strategy is capable of fabricating nanomaterials with well-defined structures and fascinating performance via controllable crystallization kinetics in the phase transformation. V2CTx MXene has been used as precursors to fabricate vanadium porphyrin metal-organic frameworks (V-PMOFs) via the coordination of deprotonated carboxylic acid ligands. However, the rational and in-depth exploration of synthesis mechanism with the aim of enriching the variety of MXene (i.e., Ti3C2Tx) and organic ligands (i.e., catechol-based) to design new MOFs is rarely reported. Herein, we have first developed a metal ion assistant transformation strategy to synthesize three-dimensional catechol-based TiCu-HHTP (HHTP = 2,3,6,7,10,11-hexahydroxytriphenylene) MOFs with a non-interpenetrating SrSi2 (srs) framework using two-dimensional Ti3C2Tx as precursors. The unique synergetic transformation mechanism involves the electron transfer from Ti3C2Tx to electrostatically adsorbed Cu2+ ion for redox reaction, the subsequent Ti-C bond rupture for Ti4+ ion release, and the continuous chelation coordination between Ti4+/Cu2+ and HHTP. Ti3C2Tx precursors and auxiliary metal ion could be rationally substituted by V2CTx and Mn+ (e.g., Ni2+, Co2+, Mn2+, and Zn2+), respectively. This strategy lays the foundation for the design and synthesis of innovative and multifarious MOFs derived from MXene or other unconventional metal precursors.

Molecular Recognition of Aromatics in Spherical Nanocages

In general, due to the lack of efficient specific molecular interactions, achieving host-guest molecular recognition inside large and neutral metal-organic cages (MOCs) is challenging. Preferential molecular recognition of aromatics using the internal binding sites of interlocked icosahedral (i. e., spherical) M12 L8 MOCs within poly-[n]-catenane (1) is reported. The guest absorption was monitored directly in the solid-state by consecutive single-crystal-to-single-crystal (SCSC) reactions in a gas-solid environment, in single-crystal X-ray diffraction (SC-XRD) experiments. The preferential guest uptake was corroborated by density functional theory (DFT) calculations by determining the host-guest interaction energy (Ehost-guest ) with a nitrobenzene (NB)≫p-xylene (p-xy)≫o-dichlorobenzene (o-DCB) trend (i. e., from 44 to 25 kcal mol-1 ), assessing the XRD outcomes. Combining SC-XRD, DFT and solid-state 13 C NMR, the exceptional stability of the M12 L8 cages, together with the guest exchange/release properties were rationalized by considering the presence of mechanical bonds (efficient π-π interactions) and by the pyridine's rotor-like behaviour (with 3 kcal mol-1 rotational energy barrier). The structure-function properties of M12 L8 makes 1 a potential candidate in the field of molecular sensors.

Colossal negative thermal expansion in a cucurbit[8]uril-enabled uranyl-organic polythreading framework via thermally induced relaxation

It is an ongoing goal to achieve the effective regulation of the thermal expansion properties of materials. In this work, we propose a method for incorporating host-guest complexation into a framework structure and construct a flexible cucurbit[8]uril uranyl-organic polythreading framework, U₃(bcbpy)₃(CB8). U₃(bcbpy)₃(CB8) can undergo huge negative thermal expansion (NTE) and has a large volumetric coefficient of -962.9 × 10^-6 K^-1 within the temperature range of 260 K to 300 K. Crystallographic snapshots of the polythreading framework at various temperatures reveal that, different from the intrinsic transverse vibrations of the subunits of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) that experience NTE via a well-known hinging model, the remarkable NTE effect observed here is the result of a newly-proposed thermally induced relaxation process. During this process, an extreme spring-like contraction of the flexible CB8-based pseudorotaxane units, with an onset temperature of ∼260 K, follows a period of cumulative expansion. More interestingly, compared with MOFs that commonly have relatively strong coordination bonds, due to the difference in the structural flexibility and adaptivity of the weakly bonded U₃(bcbpy)₃(CB8) polythreading framework, U₃(bcbpy)₃(CB8) shows unique time-dependent structural dynamics related to the relaxation process, the first time this has been reported in NTE materials. This work provides a feasible pathway for exploring new NTE mechanisms by using tailored supramolecular host-guest complexes with high structural flexibility and has promise for the design of new kinds of functional metal-organic materials with controllable thermal responsive behaviour.

Fabrication of Two-Dimensional Platelets with Heat-Resistant Luminescence and Large Two-Photon Absorption Cross Sections via Cooperative Solution/Solid Self-Assembly

The combination of solution self-assembly, which enables primary morphological control, and solid self-assembly, which enables the creation of novel properties, can lead to the formation of new functional materials that cannot be obtained using either technique alone. Herein, we report a cooperative solution/solid self-assembly strategy to fabricate novel two-dimensional (2D) platelets. Precursor 2D platelets with preorganized packing structure, shape, and size are formed via the living self-assembly of a donor-acceptor fluorophore and volatile coformer (i.e., propanol) in solution phase. After high-temperature annealing, propanol is released from the precursor platelets, and new continuous intermolecular hydrogen bonds are formed. The new 2D platelets formed retain the controllable morphologies originally defined by the solution phase living self-assembly but exhibit remarkable heat-resistant luminescence up to 200 °C and high two-photon absorption cross sections (i.e., >19,000 GM at 760 nm laser excitation).

An Engineering Method for Resonant Microcantilever Using Double-Channel Excitation and Signal Acquisition Based on LabVIEW

Resonant microcantilevers have the advantages of ultra-high heating rates, analysis speed, ultra-low power consumption, temperature programming, and trace sample analysis when applied in TGA. However, the current single-channel testing system for resonant microcantilevers can only detect one sample at a time, and need two program heating tests to obtain the thermogravimetric curve of a sample. In many cases, it is desirable to obtain the thermogravimetric curve of a sample with a single-program heating test and to simultaneously detect multiple microcantilevers for testing multiple samples. To address this issue, this paper proposes a dual-channel testing method, where a microcantilever is used as a control group and another microcantilever is used as an experimental group, to obtain the thermal weight curve of the sample in a single program temperature ramp test. With the help of the LabVIEW's convenient parallel running method, the functionality of simultaneously detecting two microcantilevers is achieved. Experimental validation showed that this dual-channel testing system can obtain the thermogravimetric curve of a sample with a single program heating test and detect two types of samples simultaneously.

Multistate Structural Switching of [3]Catenanes with Cyclic Porphyrin Dimers by Complexation with Amine Ligands

Catenanes with multistate switchable properties are promising components for next-generation molecular machines and supramolecular materials. Herein, we report a ligand-controlled switching method, a novel method for the multistate switching of catenanes controlled by complexation with added amine ligands. To verify this method, a [3]catenane comprising cyclic porphyrin dimers with a rigid π-system has been synthesized. Owing to the rigidity, the relative positions among the cyclic components of the [3]catenane can be precisely controlled by complexation with various amine ligands. Moreover, ligand-controlled multistate switching affects the optical properties of the [3]catenanes: the emission intensity can be tuned by modulating the sizes and coordination numbers of integrated amine ligands. This work shows the utility of using organic ligands for the structural switching of catenanes, and will contribute to the further development of multistate switchable mechanically interlocked molecules.

Solvent-Controlled Quadruple Catenation of Giant Chiral [8+12] Salicylimine Cubes Driven by Weak Hydrogen Bonding

Mechanically interlocked structures are fascinating synthetic targets and the topological complexity achieved through catenation offers numerous possibilities for the construction of new molecules with exciting properties. In the structural space of catenated organic cage molecules, only few examples have been realized so far, and control over the catenation process in solution is still barely achieved. Herein, we describe the formation of a quadruply interlocked catenane of giant chiral [8+12] salicylimine cubes. The formation could be controlled by the choice of solvent used in the reaction. The interlocked structure was unambiguously characterized by single crystal X-ray diffraction and weak hydrogen bonding was identified as a central driving force for the catenation. Furthermore, scrambling experiments using partially deuterated cages were performed, revealing that the catenane formation occurs through mechanical interlocking of preformed single cages.

One-dimensional alignment of defects in a flexible metal-organic framework

Crystalline materials are often considered to have rigid periodic lattices, while soft materials are associated with flexibility and nonperiodicity. The continuous evolution of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) has erased the boundaries between these two distinct conceptions. Flexibility, disorder, and defects have been found to be abundant in MOF materials with imperfect crystallinity, and their intricate interplay is poorly understood because of the limited strategies for characterizing disordered structures. Here, we apply advanced nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy to elucidate the mesoscale structures in a defective MOF with a semicrystalline lattice. We show that engineered defects can tune the degree of lattice flexibility by combining both ordered and disordered compartments. The one-dimensional alignment of correlated defects is the key for the reversible topological transition. The unique matrix is featured with both rigid framework of nanoporosity and flexible linkage of high swellability.

Exploration of Structured Symmetric Cyclic Peptides as Ligands for Metal-Organic Frameworks

Despite remarkable advances in the assembly of highly structured coordination polymers and metal-organic frameworks, the rational design of such materials using more conformationally flexible organic ligands such as peptides remains challenging. In an effort to make the design of such materials fully programmable, we first developed a computational design method for generating metal-mediated 3D frameworks using rigid and symmetric peptide macrocycles with metal-coordinating sidechains. We solved the structures of six crystalline networks involving conformationally constrained 6 to 12 residue cyclic peptides with C2, C3, and S2 internal symmetry and three different types of metals (Zn2+, Co2+, or Cu2+) by single-crystal X-ray diffraction, which reveals how the peptide sequences, backbone symmetries, and metal coordination preferences drive the assembly of the resulting structures. In contrast to smaller ligands, these peptides associate through peptide-peptide interactions without full coordination of the metals, contrary to one of the assumptions underlying our computational design method. The cyclic peptides are the largest peptidic ligands reported to form crystalline coordination polymers with transition metals to date, and while more work is required to develop methods for fully programming their crystal structures, the combination of high chemical diversity with synthetic accessibility makes them attractive building blocks for engineering a broader set of new crystalline materials for use in applications such as sensing, asymmetric catalysis, and chiral separation.

Amplification of integrated microscopic motions of high-density [2]rotaxanes in mechanically interlocked networks

Integrating individual microscopic motion to perform tasks in macroscopic sale is common in living organisms. However, developing artificial materials in which molecular-level motions could be amplified to behave macroscopically is still challenging. Herein, we present a class of mechanically interlocked networks (MINs) carrying densely rotaxanated backbones as a model system to understand macroscopic mechanical properties stemmed from the integration and amplification of intramolecular motion of the embedded [2]rotaxane motifs. On the one hand, the motion of mechanical bonds introduces the original dangling chains into the network, and the synergy of numerous such microscopic motions leads to an expansion of entire network, imparting good stretchability and puncture resistance to the MINs. On the other hand, the dissociation of host-guest recognition and subsequent sliding motion represent a peculiar energy dissipation pathway, whose integration and amplification result in the bulk materials with favorable toughness and damping capacity. Thereinto, we develop a continuous stress-relaxation method to elucidate the microscopic motion of [2]rotaxane units, which contributes to the understanding of the relationship between cumulative microscopic motions and amplified macroscopic mechanical performance.

Dimensionality Mediated Highly Repeatable and Fast Transformation of Coordination Polymer Single Crystals for All-Optical Data Processing

A family of coordination polymers (CPs) based on dynamic structural elements are of great fundamental and commercial interest addressing modern problems in controlled molecular separation, catalysis, and even data processing. Herein, the endurance and fast structural dynamics of such materials at ambient conditions are still a fundamental challenge. Here, we report on the design of a series of Cu-based CPs [Cu(bImB)Cl₂] and [Cu(bImB)₂Cl₂] with flexible ligand bImB (1,4-bis(imidazol-1-yl)butane) packed into one- and two-dimensional (1D, 2D) structures demonstrating dimensionality mediated flexibility and reversible structural transformations. Using the laser pulses as a fast source of activation energy, we initiate CP heating followed by anisotropic thermal expansion and 0.2-0.8% volume changes with the record transformation rates from 2220 to 1640 s^-1 for 1D and 2D CPs, respectively. The endurance over 10³ cycles of structural transformations, achieved for the CPs at ambient conditions, allows demonstrating optical fiber integrated all-optical data processing.

Controlling dynamics in extended molecular frameworks

Molecular machines are essential dynamic components for fuel production, cargo delivery, information storage and processing in living systems. Scientists have demonstrated that they can design and synthesize artificial molecular machines that operate efficiently in isolation - for example, at high dilution in solution - fuelled by chemicals, electricity or light. To organize the spatial arrangement and motion of these machines within close proximity to one another in solid frameworks, such that useful macroscopic work can be performed, remains a challenge in both chemical and materials science. In this Review, we summarize the progress that has been made during the past decade in organizing dynamic molecular entities in such solid frameworks. Emerging applications of these dynamic smart materials in the contexts of molecular recognition, optoelectronics, drug delivery, photodynamic therapy and water desalination are highlighted. Finally, we review recent work on a new non-equilibrium adsorption phenomenon for which we have coined the term mechanisorption. The ability to use external energy to drive directional processes in mechanized extended frameworks augurs well for the future development of artificial molecular factories.

Nitroxyl radical-containing flexible porous coordination polymer for controllable size-aelective aerobic oxidation of alcohols

The ability of flexible porous coordination polymers (PCPs) to change their structure in response to various stimuli has not been exploited in the design of tunable-selectivity catalysts. Herein, we make use of this ability and prepare nitroxyl radical-containing flexible PCP that can reversibly switch between large- and contracted-pore configurations in response to solvent change and thus promote the controllable size-selective aerobic oxidation of alcohols.

Modular Assembly of Isostructural Mixed-Ligand Uranyl Coordination Polymers Based on a Patterning Strategy

Controlling the orderly assembly of molecular building blocks for the formation of the desired architectural, chemical, and physical properties of the resulting solid-state materials remains a long-term goal and deserves to be examined. In this work, we propose a patterning strategy for modular assembly and structural regulation of mixed-ligand uranyl coordination polymers (CPs) through the combination of couples of organic ligands with complementary molecular geometry and well-matched coordination modes. By using a 5-(p-tolyldiazenyl)isophthalic acid ligand (H₂ptdi) with different rigid linear bicarboxylic acid linkers to construct a well-defined ladder-like pattern, five novel isostructural uranyl coordination polymers, [(UO)₂(ptdi)(bdc)_0.5](dma) (1), [(UO)₂(ptdi)(bpdc)_0.5](dma) (2), [(UO)₂(ptdi)(tpdc)_0.5](dma) (3), [(UO)₂(ptdi)(ndc)_0.5](dma) (4), and [(UO)₂(ptdi) (pdc)_0.5](dma) (5) {H₂bdc, 1,4-dicarboxybenzene; H₂bpdc, 4,4'-biphenyldicarboxylic acid; H₂tpdc, terphenyl-4,4″-dicarboxylic acid; H₂ndc, 2,6-naphthalenedicarboxylic acid; H₂pdc, 1,6-pyrenedicarboxylic acid; [dma]⁺, [(CH₃)₂NH₂]⁺}, were successfully synthesized. Structural analysis reveals that 1-5 have similar ladder-like units but different sizes of one-dimensional nanochannels and interlayer spacing due to the different lengths and widths of the linkers. Because of the changes in interlayer spacing of these isostructural cationic frameworks, differences in the performance of Eu³⁺ ion exchange with [dma]⁺ are observed. Moreover, those compounds with high phase purity have been further characterized by thermogravimetric analysis, infrared spectroscopy, and luminescence spectroscopy, element analysis, PXRD and UV spectroscopy. Among them, compound 3 with strong fluorescence can selectively detect Fe³⁺ over several competing metal cations in aqueous solution. This work not only provides a feasible patterning method for effectively regulating the modular synthesis of functional coordination polymers but also enriches the library of uranyl-based coordination polymers with intriguing structures and functionality.

Mechanically Interlocked Aerogels with Densely Rotaxanated Backbones

Mechanically interlocked molecules are considered promising candidates for the construction of self-adaptive materials by virtue of their fascinating structural and dynamic features. However, it is still a great challenge to fabricate such materials with higher complexity and richer functionality. Herein, we propose the concept of mechanically interlocked aerogels (MIAs) in which the three-dimensional (3D) porous frameworks are made of dense mechanically interlocked modules, thereby enabling the integration of mechanical adaptivity and multifunctionality in a single entity. The lightweight MIA monoliths possess a good appearance and hierarchical meso- and submicron-pores. Profiting from the combination of dynamic mechanical bonds and porous skeletons of aerogels, our MIAs are not only mechanically robust (average Young's modulus = 5.80 GPa and specific modulus = 130.5 kN·m/kg) but also showcase favorable mechanical adaptivity and responsiveness under external stimuli. Taking advantage of the above integrative merits, we demonstrate the multifunctionality of our MIAs in terms of iodine uptake, thermal insulation, and selective adsorption of organic dyes. Our work opens the door to designing intelligent aerogels with delicate topological chemical structures while facilitating the development of mechanically interlocked materials.

Photoresponsive Metal-Organic Frameworks as Adjustable Scaffolds in Reticular Chemistry

The easy and remote switching of light makes this stimulus an ideal candidate for a large number of applications, among which the preparation of photoresponsive materials stands out. The interest of several scientists in this area in order to achieve improved functionalities has increase parallel to the growth of the structural complexity of these materials. Thus, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) turned out to be ideal scaffolds for light-responsive ligands. This review is focused on the integration of photoresponsive organic ligands inside MOF crystalline arrays to prepare enhanced functional materials. Besides the summary of the preparation, properties and applications of these materials, an overview of the future outlook of this research area is provided.

Thermogravimetric Analysis on a Resonant Microcantilever

Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) is a widely applied classic method for material characterization. However, the existing TGA method has reached its technical ceiling in regard to its sensitivity, efficiency, application scope, and extensibility. With temperature-programming and a picogram (10^-12 g) mass resoluble measurement function, an integrated resonant microcantilever is proposed and developed into micro-electromechanical system-based TGA (MEMS TGA) technology to satisfy the significantly higher TGA requirements. With only a nanogram (10^-9 g) level of a loaded sample, the microcantilever can conduct ultrasensitive mass-loss analysis along with ultrafast and controllable heating up to 1200 °C. Experiments have verified that MEMS TGA can improve heating efficiency by at least one order of magnitude compared to conventional TGA while maintaining measurement accuracy. The trace sample requirement also enables MEMS TGA to directly test explosive substances in an air atmosphere, while conventional TGA with a larger amount of sample has difficulty in avoiding explosion-induced equipment damage during heating. The silicon MEMS TGA microchip also exhibits functional combination (even integration) with other analytical techniques such as Raman spectroscopy to realize operando characterization.

Mechanically interlocked molecules in metal-organic frameworks

Mechanically interlocked molecules (MIMs) have great potential in the development of molecular machinery due to their intercomponent dynamics. The incorporation of these molecules in a condensed phase makes it possible to take advantage of the control of the motion of the components at the macroscopic level. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are postulated as ideal supports for intertwined molecules. This review covers the chemistry of the mechanical bond incorporated into metal-organic frameworks from the seminal studies to the latest published advances. We first describe some fundamental concepts of MIMs and MOFs. Next, we summarize the advances in the incorporation of rotaxanes and catenanes inside MOF matrices. Finally, we conclude by showing the study of the rotaxane dynamics in MOFs and the operation of some stimuli-responsive MIMs within MOFs. In addition to emphasising some selected examples, we offer a critical opinion on the state of the art of this research field, remarking the key points on which the future of these systems should be focused.

Microreactor-Based TG-TEM Synchronous Analysis

It is challenging to measure the heating-induced mass change of the material during its morphological/structural evolution process. Herein, a silicon microreactor is developed for thermogravimetric-transmission electron microscopy synchronous analysis (TG-TEM synchronous analysis). A self-heating resonant microcantilever for mass-change detection and a dummy microcantilever with electron-beam transparent SiN_x windows for in situ TEM imaging are integrated back-to-back inside the microreactor. The TEM resolution of the microreactor reaches the Ångström level in an air atmosphere of 100 mbar, and the TGA function is realized by the heatable resonant microcantilever. The TG-TEM synchronous analysis has been successfully used to characterize two Ni(OH)₂ samples. During the in situ TEM observing process, the desorption of the intercalated H₂O molecules and dehydration of the lattice OH groups in the amorphous Ni(OH)₂·xH₂O nanosheets can be clearly distinguished from the microcantilever-based TGA. For single-crystal Ni(OH)₂ nanosheets, the TG-TEM synchronous analysis can distinguish the desorption of physiosorbed water, the condensation of surface OH groups, and the dehydration of lattice OH groups. The amorphous Ni(OH)₂ nanosheets transformed to polycrystalline NiO completed at 290 °C, and the decomposition from the single-crystalline Ni(OH)₂ nanoplates to NiO at 315 °C is also clearly recognized. The proposed microreactor-based TG-TEM synchronous analysis provides an interrelated characterization platform to obtain more comprehensive information on materials.

Metalation/Demetalation as a Postgelation Strategy To Tune the Mechanical Properties of Catenane-Crosslinked Gels

Mechanically interlocked molecules (MIMs) possess unique architectures and nontraditional degrees of freedom that arise from well-defined topologies that are achieved through precise mechanical bonding. Incorporation of MIMs into materials can thus provide an avenue to discover new and emergent macroscale properties. Here, the synthesis of a phenanthroline-based [2]catenane crosslinker and its incorporation into polyacrylate organogels are described. Specifically, Cu(I) metalation and demetalation was used as a postgelation strategy to tune the mechanical properties of a gel by controlling the conformational motions of integrated MIMs. The organogels were prepared via thermally initiated free radical polymerization, and Cu(I) metal was added in MeOH to the pretreated, swollen gels. Demetalation of the gels was achieved by adding lithium cyanide and washing the gels. Changes in Young's and shear moduli, as well as tensile strength, were quantified through oscillatory shear rheology and tensile testing. The reported approach provides a general method for postgelation tuning of mechanical properties using metals and well-defined catenane topologies as part of a gel network architecture.

2D and 3D metal-organic frameworks constructed with a mechanically rigidified [3]rotaxane ligand

A mechanically interlocked [3]rotaxane was newly designed, synthesized, and employed as a ligand for constructing metal-organic frameworks (MOFs). The nano-confinement by macrocycles forces the soft bis-isophthalate axle into a pseudo-rigid conformation and coordinates to zinc(II) ions, affording a two- or three-dimensional MOF under controlled conditions. The 2D MOF exhibits a neutral framework with a periodic puckering sheet structure, while an anionic framework with a pts topology was observed for the 3D MOF. The phase purity of both bulk materials was confirmed by powder X-ray diffraction. Thermogravimetric analysis reveals that both materials are stable up to 250 °C. The success of applying mechanical bonds to rigidify flexible ligands provides new insights for the design of metal-organic frameworks.

Controllable photomechanical bending of metal-organic rotaxane crystals facilitated by regioselective confined-space photodimerization

Molecular machines based on mechanically-interlocked molecules (MIMs) such as (pseudo) rotaxanes or catenates are known for their molecular-level dynamics, but promoting macro-mechanical response of these molecular machines or related materials is still challenging. Herein, by employing macrocyclic cucurbit[8]uril (CB[8])-based pseudorotaxane with a pair of styrene-derived photoactive guest molecules as linking structs of uranyl node, we describe a metal-organic rotaxane compound, U-CB[8]-MPyVB, that is capable of delivering controllable macroscopic mechanical responses. Under light irradiation, the ladder-shape structural unit of metal-organic rotaxane chain in U-CB[8]-MPyVB undergoes a regioselective solid-state [2 + 2] photodimerization, and facilitates a photo-triggered single-crystal-to-single-crystal (SCSC) transformation, which even induces macroscopic photomechanical bending of individual rod-like bulk crystals. The fabrication of rotaxane-based crystalline materials with both photoresponsive microscopic and macroscopic dynamic behaviors in solid state can be promising photoactuator devices, and will have implications in emerging fields such as optomechanical microdevices and smart microrobotics.

Distinctive features and challenges in catenane chemistry

From being an aesthetic molecular object to a building block for the construction of molecular machines, catenanes and related mechanically interlocked molecules (MIMs) continue to attract immense interest in many research areas. Catenane chemistry is closely tied to that of rotaxanes and knots, and involves concepts like mechanical bonds, chemical topology and co-conformation that are unique to these molecules. Yet, because of their different topological structures and mechanical bond properties, there are some fundamental differences between the chemistry of catenanes and that of rotaxanes and knots although the boundary is sometimes blurred. Clearly distinguishing these differences, in aspects of bonding, structure, synthesis and properties, between catenanes and other MIMs is therefore of fundamental importance to understand their chemistry and explore the new opportunities from mechanical bonds.
