Electrically driven organic laser using integrated OLED pumping

Delocalized, asynchronous, closed-loop discovery of organic laser emitters

Contemporary materials discovery requires intricate sequences of synthesis, formulation, and characterization that often span multiple locations with specialized expertise or instrumentation. To accelerate these workflows, we present a cloud-based strategy that enabled delocalized and asynchronous design-make-test-analyze cycles. We showcased this approach through the exploration of molecular gain materials for organic solid-state lasers as a frontier application in molecular optoelectronics. Distributed robotic synthesis and in-line property characterization, orchestrated by a cloud-based artificial intelligence experiment planner, resulted in the discovery of 21 new state-of-the-art materials. Gram-scale synthesis ultimately allowed for the verification of best-in-class stimulated emission in a thin-film device. Demonstrating the asynchronous integration of five laboratories across the globe, this workflow provides a blueprint for delocalizing-and democratizing-scientific discovery.

Phosphine-Capped Effects Enable Full-Color Clusteroluminescence in Nonconjugated Polyesters

Full-color luminophores have advanced applications in materials and engineering, but constructing color-tunable clusteroluminescence (CL) from nonconjugated polymers based on through-space interactions remains a huge challenge. Herein, we develop phosphine-capped nonconjugated polyesters exhibiting blue-to-red CL (400-700 nm) based on phosphine-initiated copolymerization of epoxides and cyclic anhydrides, especially P1-0.5TPP, which exhibits red CL (610 nm) with a high quantum yield of 32%. Experiments and theoretical calculations disclose that the phosphine-capped effect in polyesters brings about conformational changes and induces phosphine-ester clusters by through-space (n,π*) interactions. Moreover, CL colors and efficiencies can be easily tailored by types of phosphines, compositions and structures of polyesters, and concentration. Significantly, the role of polymer motions (group, segmental, and chain motions) on CL originating from microregions inside polyesters is revealed. Further, phosphine-capped nonconjugated polyesters are demonstrated to be nonconjugated dyes and fluorescent fibers and are also used for multicolor light-emitting diodes including white light. This work not only provides an engineering strategy based on the end-group effect to prepare full-color clusteroluminogens but also broadens the prospects for material applications.

Lasing in Low-Dimensional Crystals of a Fumaronitrile-Based Luminogen

Low-dimensional structures are ideal for organic laser media because of their efficient waveguide, photon confinement, and stimulated emission. Control of the structure and alignment of luminescent molecules is very important for realizing laser media. Here, we fabricate low-dimensional crystals of bis(biphenyl)fumaronitrile (BPFN), which is an aggregation-induced emission luminogen. The BPFN molecule contains fumaronitrile, which displays solid-state luminescence, and biphenyl, which forms low-dimensional structures through dipole-dipole interactions. Solvent diffusion yielded two-dimensional platelet crystals of BPFN with strong dipole-dipole CH-π interactions. The high photoluminescence quantum efficiency of 0.46 and uniaxially aligned molecular π-electronic transition dipole moment in the two-dimensional crystals of BPFN resulted in optically pumped lasing even when using an optical excitation source with a long pulse duration (∼5 ns). One-dimensional BPFN crystals obtained via epitaxial growth on the cleaved surface of a KBr single crystal also displayed lasing behavior.

Concluding remarks: challenges and prospects in organic photonics and electronics

The Faraday Discussion meeting on 'challenges and prospects in organic and photonics and electronics' was held in Osaka, Japan, after the COVID pandemic and during the subsequent global difficulties, in the traditional face-to-face and condensed style, with many discussions, both after the short presentations and in front of the poster presentations. I would like to take this opportunity to thank the organising members, particularly Youhei Takeda and local professors, for their efforts in organising this meeting.

A Rigid Multiple Resonance Thermally Activated Delayed Fluorescence Core Toward Stable Electroluminescence and Lasing

The investigation of organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) and organic laser devices with thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) molecules is emerging due to the potential of harnessing triplets. In this work, a boron/nitrogen multiple-resonance TADF polycyclic framework fusing carbazole units (CzBNPh) was proposed. CzBNPh exhibited a narrowband emission (<30 nm), a unity photoluminescence quantum yield, and a fast radiative rate. Consequently, CzBNPh demonstrated a low distributed feedback (DFB) lasing threshold of 0.68 μJ cm-2 . Furthermore, the stimulated emission zone of CzBNPh was effectively separated from its singlet and triplet absorption, thereby minimizing the singlet-triplet annihilation under long-pulsed excitation ranging from 20 μs to 2.5 ms. Significantly, the enhanced rigid molecular conformation, thermal stability, and photo-stability resulted in improved lasing and electroluminescence stability compared to that of 5,9-diphenyl-5,9-diaza-13b-boranaphtho[3,2,1-de]anthracene (DABNA)-core. These findings indicate the potential of CzBN-core as a promising framework for achieving long-pulsed wave and electrically-pumped lasing in the future.
