Role of the stability of charge ordering in exchange bias effect in doped manganites

Magnetic and magnetocaloric effect study of a polycrystalline Gd0.5Sr0.5-xCaxMnO3 compound

The magnetic and magnetocaloric properties of polycrystalline Gd_0.5Sr_0.5-xCa_xMnO₃ (x = 0.0, 0.2, 0.3, 0.4 and 0.5) compounds have been investigated. Depending upon the Ca and Sr proportions, fascinating magnetic ground states were observed in the Gd_0.5Sr_0.5-xCa_xMnO₃ compounds. Here, the dominating nature of the canted magnetic state (for the Gd_0.5Ca_0.5MnO₃ compound) and glassy (disordered ferromagnetic) magnetic state (for the Gd_0.5Sr_0.5MnO₃ compound) are observed. However, for the intermediate doped samples (x = 0.2, 0.3, 0.4), a competing nature is found in their magnetic and exchange bias properties. Additionally, in the low temperature region, a significantly large magnetocaloric effect is observed for all the samples. At a 70 kOe external magnetic field, the highest observed value of the magnetocaloric entropy change is 21.58 J kg^-1 K^-1 (for the Gd_0.5Ca_0.5MnO₃ sample) and the lowest is 10.15 J kg^-1 K^-1 (for the Gd_0.5Sr_0.5MnO₃ sample).

Structural and Magnetic Properties of Nanosized Half-Doped Rare-Earth Ho0.5Ca0.5MnO3 Manganite

We investigated the structural and magnetic properties of 20 nm-sized nanoparticles of the half-doped manganite Ho0.5Ca0.5MnO3 prepared by sol-gel approach. Neutron powder diffraction patterns show Pbnm orthorhombic symmetry for 10 K < T < 290 K, with lattice parameters a, b, and c in the relationship c/√2 < a < b, indicating a cooperative Jahn–Teller effect, i.e., orbital ordering OO, from below room temperature. In contrast with the bulk samples, in the interval 250 < T < 300 K, the fingerprint of charge ordering (CO) does not manifest itself in the temperature dependence of lattice parameters. However, there are signs of CO in the temperature dependence of magnetization. Accordingly, below 100 K superlattice magnetic Bragg reflections arise, which are consistent with an antiferromagnetic phase strictly related to the bulk Mn ordering of a charge exchange-type (CE-type), but characterized by an increased fraction of ferromagnetic couplings between manganese species themselves. Our results show that in this narrow band half-doped manganite, size reduction only modifies the balance between the Anderson superexchange and Zener double exchange interactions, without destabilizing an overall very robust antiferromagnetic state.

Chemical disorder driven reentrant spin cluster glass state formation and associated magnetocaloric properties of Nd2Ni0.94Si2.94

In this work, we report the synthesis of a new ternary intermetallic compound, Nd₂Ni_0.94Si_2.94, that forms in single phase only in a defect crystal structure. The compound exhibits an antiferromagnetic transition below 7.2 K (T_N) followed by a spin cluster freezing behaviour below 2.85 K (T_f), which makes the compound a reentrant spin cluster glass system. The detailed studies of dc and ac magnetization, heat capacity, non-equilibrium dynamical behaviour, viz., aging effect, temperature and field dependent magnetic relaxation and magnetic memory effect establish the compound to be a cluster-glass material below freezing temperature. The interplay between competing exchange coupling (c/a ≃ 1.04 ⇒ J_NN ≃ J_NNN) and chemical disorder driven variation in the electronic environment among the Nd ions has been argued to be responsible for such a metastable state formation. A considerable value of MCE parameters (-ΔS ∼ 11.4 J kg^-1 K^-1, RCP ∼ 160 J kg^-1 and ΔT_ad ∼ 5.2 K for a field change of 70 kOe) is obtained for this magnetically frustrated glassy compound.
