Graphene Oxide Sheets Combine into Conductive Coatings by Direct Oxidative Electropolymerization

On the effect of particle surface chemistry in film stratification and morphology regulation

Combinations of colloids and binders are often used to formulate functional coatings. In these mixtures, competition between particle migration, polymer chain diffusion, evaporation and sedimentation affects their respective spatial location and therefore can govern the surface features. In addition to this, the surface chemistry of the nanoparticles (NPs) and the resulting interparticle interactions can play a significant role in dictating the morphology and the properties of resultant films. Hence it would be possible to tune the surface and bulk topology of the films by controlling these parameters. A combination of various acrylic binders with two types of silica sols, bare (BSiO2) and modified silica (MSiO2), differing in their ability to gel, were formulated and dried under controlled conditions. Factors influencing the mobility and migration of binder and silica particles were evaluated with respect to particle concentration and drying rate. MSiO2 films showed prominent pores with gradual increase in Si% across the cross-section of the films, whereas, BSiO2 films had no pores and showed a uniform Si content across the cross-section of the films. This difference is explained by the variation in gelation between BSiO2 compared to MSiO2, that hindered the NPs migration and affects the infiltration and stratification process. This study paves a path forward to achieve desired surface and bulk porosity from colloidal silica coatings by effective control of chemistry of particles along with process parameters.

Enhancement of photoelectrochemical organics degradation and power generation by electrodeposited coatings of g-C3N4 and graphene on TiO2 nanotube arrays

New g-C₃N₄ coatings obtained via electropolymerization (EP) of melamine followed by a heat treatment and graphene oxide (GO) coatings based on combining GO sheets via EP of GO phenolic groups are used to improve the performance of photoanodes composed of TiO₂ nanotube arrays towards the photoelectrochemical (PEC) oxidation of methanol. This process, as examined in Na₂CO₃ solution (pH 11.4) for the two types of coatings and serving as a model for the degradation of an organic pollutant, demonstrates enhanced PEC performance as compared to that obtained using electrochemically reduced GO coatings. PEC oxidation currents obtained with 1 M methanol reach saturation at potentials as low as ∼-0.4 V vs. Ag/AgCl, with the highest saturation current density of ∼2.6 mA cm^-2 and photon-to-current efficiency of 52% as observed for the new TiO₂NTs/g-C₃N₄ photoanodes. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy measurements for these photoanodes show a charge transfer resistance one order of magnitude lower than that obtained by the other types of coatings. This indicates an enhanced charge separation ability for the photogenerated electron-hole pairs and faster interfacial charge transfer between the electron donor (methanol) and acceptor (holes). It is also demonstrated that the process of organics degradation can be achieved not only via an applied potential but also in a galvanic photofuelcell with methanol and oxygen serving as the fuel and oxidant, respectively. The power densities achieved with the electrochemically prepared g-C₃N₄ photoanodes (∼0.5 mW cm^-2) are at least one order of magnitude higher than those reported for other TiO₂-based systems.

Adsorptive removal of bisphenol A from aqueous solutions using phosphonated levan

In this study, the potential use of phosphonated Halomonas Levan (PhHL) as a natural and cost effective adsorbent for Bisphenol A (BPA), was systematically investigated via the study of the adsorption equilibrium, kinetics, and reuse potential as well as the interpretation of adsorption mechanism. The effects of pH and temperature on the adsorption were also evaluated. The maximum amount of BPA adsorbed on the unit weight of PhHL was determined as 104.8 (∓5.02) mg/g (at 298 K) and the maximum adsorption capacity was calculated as 126.6 mg/g by Sips model. FTIR and XPS studies were conducted to elucidate the adsorption mechanism. Based on the obtained results OH-pi and CH-pi interactions were found to be effective in the adsorption mechanism. The reuse ability was studied with three cycles of adsorption-desorption, and the results showed that the BPA adsorbed per gram of the PhHL decreased 28.6% after the third cycle. This study has shown that PhHL can be used as an effective adsorbent for the removal of BPA from aqueous solutions. The obtained results may be useful in the development of PhHL based adsorption systems for the removal of EDCs with similar chemical properties to BPA.
