Abstract
OBJECTIVES This systematic review aims to examine the neural correlates of reward processing in various forms of Internet Addiction (IA) among adults, including generalized IA and specific conditions such as Internet Gaming Disorder (IGD). The study seeks to identify distinct patterns of altered connectivity and activation in reward-related brain regions across different IA subtypes. METHODS We analyzed findings from 44 neuroimaging studies, aligning with the Research Domain Criteria (RDoC) framework. The review focused on three key aspects of reward processing: responsiveness, learning, and valuation. Studies included both structural and functional neuroimaging data from adult populations with various forms of IA. RESULTS Findings suggest distinct patterns of altered connectivity and activation in reward-related brain regions across different IA subtypes. IGD is associated with widespread abnormalities in both structural and functional connectivity within the reward network, whereas excess social media use primarily affects the amygdala-striatal system. However, methodological limitations, including variability in IA definitions, lack of comparative studies between IA subtypes, and predominance of cross-sectional designs, hinder definitive conclusions. CONCLUSION This review underscores the need for a nuanced approach to IA, recognizing potentially distinct neural mechanisms across subtypes. Such insights could inform the development of targeted interventions and enhance the clinical utility of IA research and treatment. Future research should address current methodological limitations to provide more definitive conclusions about the neurobiological underpinnings of various forms of IA.

Abstract
Background Social media use among college students often leads to psychological dependence, resulting in a rising number of internet addictions. The link between social media dependence and addiction is garnering increasing attention. Objective The aim of this study was to analyze and discuss the research trends and hotspots on social media dependence and internet disorder among college students by bibliometric methods. Methods Relevant studies on social media dependence and online addiction among college students were retrieved from the Web of Science (WoS) database spanning the years 2013 to 2024. We delineated the distribution of publications to identify the core productivity within the field. VOSviewer software was employed to conduct network visualization analyses of countries, authors, journals, and keywords, aiding in a comprehensive understanding of the research trends and hotspots in this domain. Results From the WoS database, we retrieved 302 publications, and 167 publications were included after screening. The findings revealed: (1) a steady increase in publications and citations, particularly accelerating after 2019. (2) The most productive journal is Computers in human behavior, the most productive research area is Psychology, and the most productive author, institution, and country are Professor Griffiths MD, Nottingham Trent University and China, respectively. (3) Collaborative network analysis indicated that there were multiple research groups in this field, yet the connections among countries and authors remain relatively limited. (4) Co-citation analysis of journals revealed that this field was interdisciplinary, primarily integrating psychology, psychiatry, and behavioral science. (5) Keyword analysis identified two major research hotspots: the relationship between college students' social media dependence and internet addiction, and the mediating factors influencing college students' social media dependence and internet addiction. The mechanism of internet addiction is an emerging research frontier. Conclusion This analysis outlines the progress and directions of research on college students' social media dependence and internet addiction. It offers a comprehensive examination of the latest frontiers and trends, providing theoretical support for regulating the use of electronic products and implementing mental health interventions in college students.

Abstract
Background This study employs a network analysis approach to explore the interconnections between anxiety, depression, and sleep problems and smartphone addiction among college students using network analysis, offering a new perspective on these prevalent mental health issues. Methods A cross-sectional study was conducted among art students at a public university in the province of Fujian, China. Data were collected using the Generalized Anxiety Disorder Scale-7, Patient Health Questionnaire-9, Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index, and Mobile Phone Addiction Index. The R package was used in the analysis for statistical analysis, and information was collected using multi-stage sampling as well as stratified sampling. Network analysis was utilized to identify bivariate associations between symptoms, core components, co-occurring patterns, and key nodes within the network. Network stability and accuracy were assessed using the bootstrap method, and network comparisons were conducted across subgroups based on gender, residential condition, and sibling status. Results The study included 2,057 participants. The network analysis revealed uncontrollable worry as the most central symptom, with low energy and excessive worry also identified as key symptoms within the network. Bridge symptoms such as daytime dysfunction, self-harm or suicidal ideation, abnormal behavior and speech, and sensory fear were found to be critical in linking anxiety, depression, and sleep problems. The network of comorbid symptoms and smartphone addiction highlighted inefficiency and loss of control as central factors influencing mental health. No significant differences in network characteristics were found across the subgroups, suggesting the universality of the identified network structure. Conclusion This study delineates the intricate network of anxiety, depression, sleep problems, and smartphone addiction among college students, identifying key symptomatic intersections and their implications for mental health.

Therefore, this review aggregates the extant research spanning the past two decades on the prevalence, pathogenesis, comorbidities, assessment, and treatment of MPA, aiming to furnish a reference for future investigations into this condition.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The incidence of behavioral addictions (BAs) associated with scientific and technological advances has been increasing steadily. Unfortunately, a large number of studies on the structural and functional abnormalities have shown poor reproducibility, and it remains unclear whether different addictive behaviors share common underlying abnormalities. Therefore, our objective was to conduct a quantitative meta-analysis of different behavioral addictions to provide evidence-based evidence of common structural and functional changes. METHODS We conducted systematic searches in PubMed, Web of Science and Scopus from January 2010 to December 2023, supplementing reference lists of high-quality relevant meta-analyses and reviews, to identify eligible voxel-based morphometry (VBM) and functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) studies. Using anisotropic seed-based D-Mapping (AES-SDM) meta-analysis methods, we compared brain abnormalities between BAs and healthy controls (HCs). RESULTS There were 11 GMV studies (287 BAs and 292 HCs) and 26 fMRI studies (577 BAs and 545 HCs) that met inclusion criteria. Compared with HCs, BAs demonstrated significant reductions in gray matter volume (GMV) in (1) right anterior cingulate gyri extending into the adjacent superior frontal gyrus, as well as in the left inferior frontal gyrus and right striatum. (2) the bilateral precuneus, right supramarginal gyrus, and right fusiform gyrus were hyperfunction; (3) the left medial cingulate gyrus extended to the superior frontal gyrus, the left inferior frontal gyrus, and right middle temporal gyrus had hypofunction. CONCLUSIONS Our study identified structural and functional impairments in brain regions involved in executive control, cognitive function, visual memory, and reward-driven behavior in BAs. Notably, fronto-cingulate regions may serve as common biomarkers of BAs.

Abstract
The human cerebellum is increasingly recognized to be involved in nonmotor and higher-order cognitive functions. Yet, its ties with the entire cerebral cortex have not been holistically studied in a whole brain exploration with a unified analytical framework. Here, we characterized dissociable cortical-cerebellar structural covariation patterns based on regional gray matter volume (GMV) across the brain in n = 38,527 UK Biobank participants. Our results invigorate previous observations in that important shares of cortical-cerebellar structural covariation are described as 1) a dissociation between the higher-level cognitive system and lower-level sensorimotor system and 2) an anticorrelation between the visual-attention system and advanced associative networks within the cerebellum. We also discovered a novel pattern of ipsilateral, rather than contralateral, cerebral-cerebellar associations. Furthermore, phenome-wide association assays revealed key phenotypes, including cognitive phenotypes, lifestyle, physical properties, and blood assays, associated with each decomposed covariation pattern, helping to understand their real-world implications. This systems neuroscience view paves the way for future studies to explore the implications of these structural covariations, potentially illuminating new pathways in our understanding of neurological and cognitive disorders.NEW & NOTEWORTHY Cerebellum's association with the entire cerebral cortex has not been holistically studied in a unified way. Here, we conjointly characterize the population-level cortical-cerebellar structural covariation patterns leveraging ∼40,000 UK Biobank participants whole brain structural scans and ∼1,000 phenotypes. We revitalize the previous hypothesis of an anticorrelation between the visual-attention system and advanced associative networks within the cerebellum. We also discovered a novel ipsilateral cerebral-cerebellar associations. Phenome-wide association (PheWAS) revealed real-world implications of the structural covariation patterns.

Abstract
Smartphones are now in very widespread use, and concerns have arisen about potential detrimental effects, even with acute use. These adverse consequences are often linked to the emergence of mental fatigue. While the cognitive implications of fatigue are well-documented, knowledge about the specific influence of acute smartphone use on cognitive performance remains scarce. The aim of this study was therefore to investigate the impact of acute smartphone use on cognitive performance. It included two experiments: one designed to assess the impact of smartphone use on vigilance, and the other focusing on evaluating inhibition capacities. In Experiment 1, two groups of 40 participants completed a Psychomotor Vigilance Task (PVT) before and after using a smartphone for 45 min (experimental group), or before and after watching a documentary (control group). In Experiment 2, two groups of 40 participants were subjected to a similar experimental design but had to perform a Go/NoGo task instead of a PVT. Mental fatigue and drowsiness were evaluated with visual analog scales before and after smartphone use and watching a documentary. Results suggested that both watching a documentary and using a smartphone for 45 min increased subjective mental fatigue and drowsiness. Watching the documentary did not impair cognitive performance. Reaction times on the PVT and number of errors on NoGo trials in the Go/NoGo task were higher among the participants in the smartphone condition. These results indicate reduced vigilance and impaired inhibition capacities only after smartphone use. We conclude that acute smartphone use induces mental fatigue and decreases cognitive performance. Further research is needed to understand the mechanisms underlying this decline in cognitive performance.

Abstract
ABSTRACT Smartphones have become essential to life in Western society. This situation reached its peak, especially during the pandemic period. The possibility that smartphone use has negative impact on brain activity has attracted increasing interest among researchers. Medical faculty students were contacted via e-mail and invited to participate in the study. Participants completed the Smartphone Addiction Scale (SAS), the Mental Fatigue Scale (MFS), and the Cognitive Flexibility Inventory (CFI). The total SAS scores of participants with mental fatigue were significantly higher than those of participants without mental fatigue (p < 0.001). In the smartphone addiction tendency group, the total MFS scores were significantly higher, and the total CFI scores were significantly lower than the scores of the control group (p < 0.001 for both). In the logistic regression analysis, the total SAS score was associated with the development of mental fatigue (B coefficient, 0.031, p < 0.001). This study identified potential relationships between smartphone addiction, mental fatigue, and cognitive flexibility. We suggest that smartphone overuse may be an independent risk factor for the development of mental fatigue.

Abstract
Background and aims Adolescents, who are undergoing brain changes, are vulnerable to many online risks in their use or overuse of digital technology. Parental media mediation (a set of practices parents use to guide children's media use and to reduce potential negative consequences of children from media) is considered an important way to help regulate and reduce adolescents' use or problematic use of digital media and protect them from online risks. However, previous studies have shown controversial results. These controversial results reflect a reproducibility crisis in psychological science due to selective reporting, selective analysis, and inadequate description of the conditions necessary to obtain results. Methods To address this issue and reveal the authentic effect of parental media mediation strategies, this study presented the results of a specification curve analysis of 1176 combinations indicating the longitudinal effect of parental media mediation on adolescent smartphone use or problematic use. A total of 2154 parent-adolescent dyads (adolescents' ages ranged from 9 to 18, the average age was 12.13 ± 2.20, and 817 of the adolescents were male) participated in two waves of measurements. Results The results showed that of the 12 parental media mediations, joint parental use for learning had the greatest effect in reducing future smartphone use or problematic use among adolescents. Overall, none of the parental media mediations had a substantial effect in reducing future smartphone use or problematic use among adolescents. Discussion and conclusions The ineffectiveness of parental media mediation poses a challenge for researchers, the public, and policy-makers. More exploration is needed in the search of effective parental media mediations for adolescents.

Abstract
Introduction Using digital addiction as an umbrella term to cover any type of addictions to digital technologies such as the internet, smartphones, social media, or video games, the current study aimed to reveal the intellectual structure and evolution of research addressing digital addiction-depression relationship. Methods The study combined bibliometric and science mapping analysis methods for this purpose. Data for the study was gathered from Web of Science Core Collection after a comprehensive process of data search/extraction, and 241 articles were included in the final data set. A period-based, comparative science mapping analysis was performed using the SciMAT software. Results The analysis of data over three periods, Period 1 (1983-2016), Period 2 (2017-2019), and Period 3 (2020-2022) showed that internet addiction was the most significant theme across all three periods, which was followed by social media addiction. Depression, which emerged as a significant theme during Period 1, was later covered under anxiety disorder theme. Research interest was mostly on factors related to both addiction and depression such as cognitive distortion, insomnia, loneliness, self-esteem, social support, alexithymia, as well as cybervictimization or academic performance. Discussion The results suggested that much research is warranted on the digital addiction-depression relationship in different age cohorts, especially children and elderly. Similarly, the current analysis showed that this line of research particularly focused on internet, gaming and social media addiction, and evidence with regard to other types of digital addiction or related compulsive behaviors was almost absent. In addition, research was mostly inclined to understanding cause-effect relationships, which is significant, but preventive strategies seemed to be barely addressed. Likewise, the smartphone addiction-depression relationship arguably garnered less research interest, so future research would contribute to the field in this respect.

Abstract
The smartphone represents a transformative device that dramatically changed our daily lives, including how we communicate, work, entertain ourselves, and navigate through unknown territory. Given its ubiquitous availability and impact on nearly every aspect of our lives, debates on the potential impact of smartphone (over-)use on the brain and whether smartphone use can be "addictive" have increased over the last years. Several studies have used magnetic resonance imaging to characterize associations between individual differences in excessive smartphone use and variations in brain structure or function. Therefore, it is an opportune time to summarize and critically reflect on the available studies. Following this overview, we present a roadmap for future research to improve our understanding of how excessive smartphone use can affect the brain, mental health, and cognitive and affective functions.

Abstract
Growing literature indicates that problematic Internet use (PIU) and excessive smartphone use (ESU) are associated with breakdown of functional brain networks. The effects of PIU&ESU on emotional face expression (EFE) recognition are not well understood, however behavioural investigations and fMRI studies of different addiction forms indicated the impairment of this function. The Facial Emotion Recognition Paradigm was used to probe cortico-limbic responses during EFE recognition. Combined fMRI and psychophysiological analysis were implemented to measure EFE-related functional brain changes in PIU&ESU. Self-reported questionnaires were used to assess PIU&ESU. Positive associations were found between the extent of PIU&ESU and functional connections related to emotional cognitive control and social brain networks. Our findings highlight the involvement of social functioning, especially EFE recognition in PIU&ESU. Therefore, we emphasize that besides the brain's executive and reward systems, the social brain network might be the next candidate to be involved in the pathogenesis of PIU&ESU.

Abstract
Background: Despite known association of internet addiction with a reduced brain volume and abnormal connectivity, the impact of excessive smartphone use remains unclear. Methods: PubMed, Embase, ClinicalTrial.gov, and Web of Science databases were systematically searched from inception to July 2022 using appropriate keywords for observational studies comparing differences in brain volumes and activations between excessive smartphone users and individuals with regular use by magnetic resonance imaging. Results: Of the 11 eligible studies retrieved from 6993 articles initially screened, seven and six evaluated brain volumes and activations, respectively. The former enrolled 421 participants (165 excessive smartphone users vs. 256 controls), while the latter recruited 276 subjects with 139 excessive smartphone users. The results demonstrated a smaller brain volume in excessive smartphone users compared to the controls (g = −0.55, p < 0.001), especially in subcortical regions (p < 0.001). Besides, the impact was more pronounced in adolescents than in adults (p < 0.001). Regression analysis revealed a significant positive association between impulsivity and volume reduction. Regarding altered activations, the convergences of foci in the declive of the posterior lobe of cerebellum, the lingual gyrus, and the middle frontal gyrus were noted. Conclusions: Our findings demonstrated a potential association of excessive smartphone use with a reduced brain volume and altered activations.

Abstract
BACKGROUND With the continued spread of smartphones and development of the internet, the potential negative effects arising from problematic smartphone use (PSU) in adolescents are being reported on an increasing basis. This study aimed to investigate whether altered resting-state functional connectivity (rsFC) is related to the psychological factors underlying PSU in adolescents. METHODS Resting-state functional magnetic resonance images were acquired from 47 adolescents with PSU and 46 healthy control adolescents (the CON group). Seed-based functional connectivity analyses were then performed to compare the two groups with respect to rsFC in the right inferior frontal gyrus, associated with various forms of self-control, and rsFC in the left inferior frontal gyrus. RESULTS Compared to the CON group, the PSU group exhibited a reduction in rsFC between the right inferior frontal gyrus and limbic areas, including the bilateral parahippocampal gyrus, the left amygdala, and the right hippocampus. In addition, a reduction in fronto-limbic rsFC was associated with the severity of PSU, the degree of self-control, and the amount of time the subjects used their smartphones. CONCLUSION Adolescents with PSU exhibited reduced levels of fronto-limbic functional connectivity; this mechanism is involved in salience attribution and self-control, attributes that are critical to the clinical manifestation of substance and behavioral addictions. Our data provide clear evidence for alterations in brain connectivity with respect to self-control in PSU.

Abstract
Background and Aims: This present paper will review the existing evidence on the effects of excessive smartphone use on physical and mental health. Results: Comorbidity with depression, anxiety, OCD, ADHD and alcohol use disorder. Excessive smartphone use is associated with difficulties in cognitive-emotion regulation, impulsivity, impaired cognitive function, addiction to social networking, shyness and low self-esteem. Medical problems include sleep problems, reduced physical fitness, unhealthy eating habits, pain and migraines, reduced cognitive control and changes in the brain's gray matter volume. In Conclusion: Excessive smartphone use is associated with psychiatric, cognitive, emotional, medical and brain changes that should be considered by health and education professionals.

Abstract
Smartphones provide convenience in everyday life. Smartphones, however, can elicit adverse effects when used excessively. The purpose of this study was to examine the underlying neurobiological alterations that arise from problematic smartphone use. We performed resting state seed-based functional connectivity (FC) analysis of 44 problematic smartphone users and 54 healthy controls. This analysis assessed the salience, central executive, default mode, and affective networks. Compared to controls, problematic smartphone users showed enhanced FC within the salience network and between the salience and default mode network. Moreover, we observed decreased FC between the salience and central executive network in problematic smartphone users, compared to controls. These results imply that problematic smartphone use is associated with aberrant FC in key brain networks. Our results suggest that changes in FC of key networks centered around the salience network might be associated with problematic smartphone use.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Perceived stress, burnout, and poor sleep quality are high among medical students. Interventions designed to target these issues are necessary to promote the health and well-being of medical students. The purpose of this study was twofold: 1) to assess the feasibility of implementing a sunrise alarm clock intervention with medical students and 2) to evaluate the impact of the intervention on perceived stress, burnout scores, and sleep quality. METHODS We conducted a feasibility study to evaluate the efficacy of a two-week, sunrise alarm clock intervention in combination with electronic device removal at bedtime. We assessed first- and second-year medical students' perceived stress, burnout scores, including Emotional Exhaustion, Depersonalization, and Low Sense of Personal Achievement, and sleep quality before and after the intervention. In addition, we measured smartphone addiction prior to the intervention. RESULTS A total of 57 students consented to participate, of which 55 completed both the pre- and post-assessments (3.5% attrition). The mean age of the participants was 24.8 ± 1.9 years, 50.9% (n = 29) identified as women, and 68.4% (n = 39) identified as white. Pre-intervention, 42.1% (n = 24) of students met criteria for smartphone addiction and 77.2% (n = 44) met criteria for poor sleep quality. In addition, 22.8% (n = 13) of participants had high emotional exhaustion, 64.9% (n = 31) high depersonalization, and 42.1% (n = 24) low sense of personal accomplishment prior to the intervention. Following the two-week intervention, participants showed improvements in emotional exhaustion (p = 0.001, Cohen's d = 0.353), depersonalization (p = 0.001, Cohen's d = 0.411) low sense of personal accomplishment (p = 0.023, Cohen's d = 0.275), perceived stress (p < .001, Cohen's d = .334), and sleep quality (p < 0.001, Cohen's d = 0.925). The number of participants who reported poor sleep quality decreased to 41.8% (n = 23), demonstrating a significant decline (p = 0.026). Participants also improved subjective sleep quality (p < 0.001, Cohen's d = 1.033), sleep duration (p = 0.001, Cohen's d = 0.431), sleep latency (p < 0.001, Cohen's d = 0.433), and sleep efficiency (p = 0.021, Cohen's d = 0.673). CONCLUSIONS These findings suggest that the two-week sunrise alarm clock protocol with electronic device removal was effective in improving sleep quality and reducing burnout scores, and perceived stress. However, additional research comparing this intervention to a proper control group is needed to draw meaningful conclusions about the effectiveness of this intervention.

Abstract
Popularity of smartphones has dramatically increased in the past years, accompanied by increased concerns regarding potentially adverse effects on physical and mental health. Addictive behavior associated with excessive smartphone use, frequently referred to as "smartphone addiction" (SPA), has attracted increased scientific interest. However the neural correlates of SPA are unknown. We used functional magnetic resonance imaging at 3T to investigate the neural correlates of cue reactivity (CR) in individuals with SPA (n = 21) compared to controls (n = 21). SPA was assessed using the Smartphone Addiction Inventory (SPAI), and neural activity was measured by a modified CR task. Contrasts of images of smartphones vs. neutral stimuli and stimuli including active vs. inactive smartphones (p < 0.001, uncorrected for height, followed by correction for spatial extent) were analyzed. In the first contrast, group differences in medial prefrontal (MPFC), occipital, temporal, and anterior cingulate (ACC) cortices, in temporoparietal regions, and cerebellum were found. For active vs. inactive smartphones, group differences were found in frontal operculum/anterior insula and precentral gyrus. Negative correlations were found between MPFC, ACC, precuneus, and precentral gyrus and specific SPAI subscores, i.e. compulsive behavior, functional impairment and withdrawal. This study suggests spatial similarities of CR-related brain activation between addictive smartphone use and other well-known addictive disorders.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND AIMS Although the Internet has provided convenience and efficiency in many areas of everyday life, problems stemming from Internet use have also been identified, such as Internet gaming disorder (IGD). Internet addiction, which includes IGD, can be viewed as a behavioral addiction or impulse control disorder. This study investigated the altered functional and effective connectivity of the core brain networks in individuals with IGD compared to healthy controls (HCs). METHODS Forty-five adults with IGD and 45 HCs were included in this study. To examine the brain networks related to personality traits that influence problematic online gaming, the left and right central executive network (CEN) and the salience network (SN) were included in the analysis. Also, to examine changes in major brain network topographies, we analyzed the default mode network (DMN). RESULTS IGD participants showed lower functional connectivity between the dorsal lateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC) and other regions in the CEN than HC participants during resting state. Also, IGD participants revealed reduced functional connectivity between the dorsal anterior cingulate cortex and other regions in the SN and lower functional connectivity in the medial prefrontal cortex of the anterior DMN. Notably, in IGD individuals but not HC individuals, there was a positive correlation between IGD severity and effective connectivity and a positive correlation between reward sensitivity and effective connectivity within the ventral striatum of the SN. CONCLUSIONS Problematic online gaming was associated with neurofunctional alterations, impairing the capacity of core brain networks.

Abstract
Popularity and availability of smartphones have dramatically increased in the past years. This trend is accompanied by increased concerns regarding potentially adverse effects of excessive smartphone use, particularly with respect to physical and mental health. Recently, the term "smartphone addiction" (SPA) has been introduced to describe smartphone-related addictive behavior and associated physical and psychosocial impairment. Here, we used structural and functional magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) at 3 T to investigate gray matter volume (GMV) and intrinsic neural activity in individuals with SPA (n = 22) compared to a control group (n = 26). SPA was assessed using the Smartphone Addiction Inventory (SPAI), GMV was investigated by means of voxel-based morphometry, and intrinsic neural activity was measured by the amplitude of low frequency fluctuations (ALFF). Compared to controls, individuals with SPA showed lower GMV in left anterior insula, inferior temporal and parahippocampal cortex (p < 0.001, uncorrected for height, followed by correction for spatial extent). Lower intrinsic activity in SPA was found in the right anterior cingulate cortex (ACC). A significant negative association was found between SPAI and both ACC volume and activity. In addition, a significant negative association between SPAI scores and left orbitofrontal GMV was found. This study provides first evidence for distinct structural and functional correlates of behavioral addiction in individuals meeting psychometric criteria for SPA. Given their widespread use and increasing popularity, the present study questions the harmlessness of smartphones, at least in individuals that may be at increased risk for developing smartphone-related addictive behaviors.

Abstract
Verbal abuse is an emotional abuse intended to inflict intense humiliation-denigration-fear as perceived by exposed person. Network-based approaches have been applied to explore the integrative-segregated patterns of associations among the psychological features and external stimuli for diverse populations; few studies reported for verbal abuse effects in college population. Self-reporting measurements acquired form 5,616 college students were used for network analyses. Escalating cascades of verbal abuse from differential sources (parents, peers, or supervisors; network 1) and directed associations among verbal abuse severity-psychopathology-social interaction (network 2) were estimated using the directed acyclic graphs. Principal connectors of verbal abuse–psychopathology–social interaction were shown using the graph theory metrics calculated from the intra-individual covariance networks (network 3). Directed propagating patterns of verbal abuse phenomena differed by source (network 1). Severe peer-related verbal abuse affected psychomotor changes and influenced irritability (network 2). Verbal abuse of self-esteem damage and unjust blame served as connectors in the verbal abuse-psychopathology-social interaction; influence of smartphone overuse-related distress was stronger in cases with more severe verbal abuse (network 3). Verbal abuse that damages self-esteem and conveys unjust blame harms mental health and social interaction for college population.

Abstract
As smartphone use has grown rapidly over recent decade, it has been a growing interest in the potential negative impact of excessive smartphone use. In this study, we aim to identify altered brain connectivity associated with excessive smartphone use, and to investigate correlations between withdrawal symptoms, cortisol concentrations, and frontostriatal connectivity. We focused on investigating functional connectivity in frontostriatal regions, including the orbitofrontal cortex (OFC), midcingulate cortex (MCC), and nucleus accumbens (NAcc), which is related to reward processing and cognitive control. We analyzed data from 38 adolescents with excessive smartphone use (SP) and 42 healthy controls (HC). In the SP group compared with HC, we observed lower functional connectivity between the right OFC and NAcc, and between the left OFC and MCC. Moreover, functional connectivity between the MCC and NAcc was greater in SP compared with HC. Subsequently, we examined the relationship between Internet use withdrawal symptoms, cortisol concentrations, and functional connectivity between the OFC and NAcc in SP and HC. We observed that more severe withdrawal symptoms were associated with higher cortisol concentrations in adolescents with excessive smartphone use. The most interesting finding was that we observed a negative correlation between OFC connectivity with the NAcc and both withdrawal symptoms and cortisol concentrations. The functional connectivity between the OFC and NAcc, and between the OFC and MCC are related to cognitive control of emotional stimuli including reward. The current study suggests that adolescents with SP had reduced functional connectivity in these regions related to cognitive control. Furthermore, Internet use withdrawal symptoms appear to elicit cortisol secretion, and this psychophysiological change may affect frontostriatal connectivity. Our findings provide important clues to understanding the effects of excessive use of smartphones on brain functional connectivity in adolescence.
