Energy harnessing and storage from surface switching with a ferroelectric electrolyte

In the quest for innovative energy solutions suitable for mobile, stationary and digital applications, ferroelectric topological insulators (FETIs)1 emerge as promising candidates. These materials combine topologically protected states with spontaneous and switchable polarization. This study reveals emergent phenomena in FETI-electrolytes through experiments and simulations, specifically in the A3-2xBaxClO family (where A = Li, Na or K, and x = 0 or 0.005). Here, it is shown that surface oscillations of the potential (V), temperature, and mass may synchronize with the bulk's oscillations, and be harnessed and stored in the form of electrical energy either in a sole FETI or in a battery-type cell presenting a panoply of applications from wireless batteries to transistors, memories, sensors, and selective catalysts.

Spatio-temporal superconducting dynamics driven by THz fields from topological spintronic terahertz emitters

Metastructures of spintronic THz emitters can be engineered to have a well-defined topology characterized by a topological charge. The emitted THz radiation possesses a phase-locked transversal and longitudinal components with the ratio of which being tunable by the topological charge of the underlying metastructure. The THz fields so produced are employed to drive and spatio-temporally modulate the superconducting order parameter in a type II superconductor. Using a time-dependent Landau-Ginzburg approach, it is demonstrated how the topology of the THz fields is reflected in a texturing of the superconducting phase and density. Full numerical simulations illustrate the emergence and the nanoscale steering of Abrikosov vortices as well as the local modification of the superconducting density and transport properties of nanoscale samples with different geometries. The study highlights the potential of metamaterials based on spintronic THz emitters as a coherent source for spatially and vectorially modulated THz radiation.

Revealing Josephson Vortex Dynamics in Proximity Junctions below Critical Current

Made of a thin non-superconducting metal (N) sandwiched by two superconductors (S), SNS Josephson junctions enable novel quantum functionalities by mixing up the intrinsic electronic properties of N with the superconducting correlations induced from S by proximity. Electronic properties of these devices are governed by Andreev quasiparticles (Andreev, A. Sov. Phys. JETP 1965, 20, 1490) which are absent in conventional SIS junctions whose insulating barrier (I) between the two S electrodes owns no electronic states. Here we focus on the Josephson vortex (JV) motion inside Nb-Cu-Nb proximity junctions subject to electric currents and magnetic fields. The results of local (magnetic force microscopy) and global (transport) experiments provided simultaneously are compared with our numerical model, revealing the existence of several distinct dynamic regimes of the JV motion. One of them, identified as a fast hysteretic entry/escape below the critical value of Josephson current, is analyzed and suggested for low-dissipative logic and memory elements.

Current-driven production of vortex-antivortex pairs in planar Josephson junction arrays and phase cracks in long-range order

Proliferation of topological defects like vortices and dislocations plays a key role in the physics of systems with long-range order, particularly, superconductivity and superfluidity in thin films, plasticity of solids, and melting of atomic monolayers. Topological defects are characterized by their topological charge reflecting fundamental symmetries and conservation laws of the system. Conservation of topological charge manifests itself in extreme stability of static topological defects because destruction of a single defect requires overcoming a huge energy barrier proportional to the system size. However, the stability of driven topological defects remains largely unexplored. Here we address this issue and investigate numerically a dynamic instability of moving vortices in planar arrays of Josephson junctions. We show that a single vortex driven by sufficiently strong current becomes unstable and destroys superconductivity by triggering a chain reaction of self-replicating vortex-antivortex pairs forming linear of branching expanding patterns. This process can be described in terms of propagating phase cracks in long-range order with far-reaching implications for dynamic systems of interacting spins and atoms hosting magnetic vortices and dislocations.
