Coupling of Surface Plasmon Modes and Refractive Index Sensitivity of Hollow Silver Nanoprism

Superior Resonant Nanocavities Engineering on the Photonic Crystal-Coupled Emission Platform for the Detection of Femtomolar Iodide and Zeptomolar Cortisol

Although luminescence spectroscopy has been a promising sensing technology with widespread applications in point-of-care diagnostics and chem-bio detection, it fundamentally suffers from low signal collection efficiency, considerable background noise, poor photostability, and intrinsic omnidirectional emission properties. In this regard, surface plasmon-coupled emission, a versatile plasmon-enhanced detection platform with >50% signal collection efficiency, high directionality, and polarization has previously been explored to amplify the limit of detection of desired analytes. However, high Ohmic loss in metal-dependent plasmonic platforms has remained an inevitable challenge. Here, we develop a hybrid nanocavity interface on a template-free and loss-less photonic crystal-coupled emission (PCCE) platform by the quintessential integration of high refractive index dielectric Nd₂O₃ "Huygens sources" and sharp-edged silver nanoprisms (NPrs). While efficient forward light scattering characteristics of Nd₂O₃ nanorods (NRs) present 460-fold emission enhancements in PCCE, the tunable localized plasmon resonances of NPrs display high electromagnetic field confinement at sharp nanotips and protrusions, boosting the enhancements 947-fold. The judicious use of silver NPr (AgNPr) metal-Nd₂O₃ dielectric hybrid resonances in conjugation with surface-trapped Bloch surface waves of the one-dimensional photonic crystal (1DPhC) displayed unprecedented >1300-fold enhancements. The experimental results are validated by excellent correlations with numerical calculations. The multifold hotspots generated by zero and nonzero nanogaps between the coassembly of NPrs, NRs, and 1DPhCs are used for (i) determination of hyper and hypothyroidism levels through monitoring the concentration of iodide (I^-) ions and (ii) single-molecule detection (zeptomolar) of the stress hormone, cortisol, through the synthesized cortisol-rhodamine B conjugate obtained using a simple esterification reaction.

An effective utilization of MXene and its effect on electromagnetic interference shielding: flexible, free-standing and thermally conductive composite from MXene–PAT–poly(p-aminophenol)–polyaniline co-polymer

MXene and conductive polymers are attractive candidates for electromagnetic interference shielding (EMI) applications. The MXene–PAT-conductive polymer (CP) composites were fabricated by a cost-effective spray coating technique and characterized using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Raman spectroscopy. A new approach has been developed for the synthesis of exfoliated MXene. The MXene–PAT–poly(p-aminophenol)–polyaniline co-polymer composite exhibited good electric conductivity (EC) of 7.813 S cm⁻¹. The composites revealed an excellent thermal properties, which were 0.687 W (m K)⁻¹ thermal conductivity, 2.247 J (g K)⁻¹ heat capacity, 0.282 mm² s⁻¹ thermal diffusivity and 1.330 W s^1/2 m⁻² K⁻¹ thermal effusivity. The composites showed 99.99% shielding efficiency and the MXene–PAT–PANI–PpAP composite (MXPATPA) had EMI shielding effectiveness of 45.18 dB at 8.2 GHz. The reduced form of MXene (r-Ti₃C₂T_x) increased the shielding effectiveness (SE) by 7.26% and the absorption (SE_A) was greatly enhanced by the ant farm like structure. The composites possess excellent thermal and EMI SE characteristics, thus can be applied in areas, such as mobile phones, military utensils, heat-emitting electronic devices, automobiles and radars.

Modulation of LSPR spectra and enhanced RI-sensitivity through symmetry breaking in hollow gold nanoprism

Optical responses of plasmonic nanostructures can be tailor-made by judiciously controlling their structural parameters. Here in this article, we describe how symmetry-breaking influences the optical properties of an anisotropic hollow nanostructure, a hollow gold nanoprism (HGN). We find that the introduction of structural asymmetry by shifting the cavity position alters the plasmon hybridization conditions, which, in turn, lifts the degeneracy of bonding plasmon modes and thereby causes mode splitting. The splitting between the nondegenerate bonding modes is directly correlated with the extent of the cavity offset. Interestingly, it is found that a reduced symmetry HGN having a cavity of any arbitrary size does not necessarily show such spectral modulation as a function of the cavity offset. Rather, there is a threshold value of (cavity diameter/edge length) ratio for observing this kind of optical behavior. Symmetry breaking not only leads to spectral modulation but also improves the refractive index (RI) sensitivity as well as the associated figure of merit of the HGN nanosensors tremendously. This comprehensive study develops a predictive understanding of the structure-specificity of the optical properties of HGNs and also suggest that sensible tailoring of the structural parameters can make HGNs as one of the most suitable candidates for RI sensing based applications.
