Can de Broglie-Bohm Mechanics Be Considered Complete?

In this work celebrating the centenary of quantum mechanics, we review the principles of the de Broglie-Bohm theory (dBB), also known as pilot-wave theory. We assess the most common reading of it (the Nomological interpretation based on the notion of primitive ontology in tridimensional space) and defend instead a more causal and pluralistic approach, drawing on classical analogies with optics and hydrodynamics. Within this framework, we review some of the approaches exploiting mechanical analogies to overcome the limitations of the current dBB theory and perhaps quantum mechanics itself.

The POVM Theorem in Bohmian Mechanics

The POVM theorem is a central result in Bohmian mechanics, grounding the measurement formalism of standard quantum mechanics in a statistical analysis based on the quantum equilibrium hypothesis (the Born rule for Bohmian particle positions). It states that the outcome statistics of an experiment are described by a positive operator-valued measure (POVM) acting on the Hilbert space of the measured system. In light of recent debates about the scope and status of this result, we provide a systematic presentation of the POVM theorem and its underlying assumptions with a focus on their conceptual foundations and physical justifications. We conclude with a brief discussion of the scope of the POVM theorem-especially the sense in which it does (and does not) place limits on what is "measurable" in Bohmian mechanics.

Dwell Times, Wavepacket Dynamics, and Quantum Trajectories for Particles with Spin 1/2

The theoretical connections between quantum trajectories and quantum dwell times, previously explored in the context of 1D time-independent stationary scattering applications, are here generalized for multidimensional time-dependent wavepacket applications for particles with spin 1/2. In addition to dwell times, trajectory-based dwell time distributions are also developed, and compared with previous distributions based on the dwell time operator and the flux-flux correlation function. Dwell time distributions are of interest, in part because they may be of experimental relevance. In addition to standard unipolar quantum trajectories, bipolar quantum trajectories are also considered, and found to relate more directly to the dwell time (and other quantum time) quantities of greatest relevance for scattering applications. Detailed calculations are performed for a benchmark 3D spin-1/2 particle application, considered previously in the context of computing quantum arrival times.

On the spin dependence of detection times and the nonmeasurability of arrival times

According to a well-known principle of quantum physics, the statistics of the outcomes of any quantum experiment are governed by a Positive-Operator-Valued Measure (POVM). In particular, for experiments designed to measure a specific physical quantity, like the time of a particle's first arrival at a surface, this principle establishes that if the probability distribution of that quantity does not arise from a POVM, no such experiment exists. Such is the case with the arrival time distributions proposed by Das and Dürr, due to the nature of their spin dependence.

Non-local temporal interference

Although position and time have different mathematical roles in quantum mechanics, with one being an operator and the other being a parameter, there is a space-time duality in quantum phenomena-a lot of quantum phenomena that were first observed in the spatial domain were later observed in the temporal domain as well. In this context, we propose a modified version of the double-double-slit experiment using entangled atom pairs to observe a non-local interference in the arrival time distribution, which is analogous to the non-local interference observed in the arrival position distribution. However, computing the arrival time distribution in quantum mechanics is a challenging open problem, and so to overcome this problem we employ a Bohmian treatment. Based on this approach, we numerically demonstrate that there is a complementary relationship between the one-particle and two-particle interference visibilities in the arrival time distribution, which is analogous to the complementary relationship observed in the position distribution. These results can be used to test the Bohmian arrival time distribution in a strict manner, i.e., where the semiclassical approximation breaks down. Moreover, our approach to investigating this experiment can be applied to a wide range of phenomena, and it seems that the predicted non-local temporal interference and associated complementary relationship are universal behaviors of entangled quantum systems that may manifest in various phenomena.

Times of arrival and gauge invariance

We revisit the arguments underlying two well-known arrival-time distributions in quantum mechanics, viz., the Aharonov–Bohm–Kijowski (ABK) distribution, applicable for freely moving particles, and the quantum flux (QF) distribution. An inconsistency in the original axiomatic derivation of Kijowski’s result is pointed out, along with an inescapable consequence of the ‘negative arrival times’ inherent to this proposal (and generalizations thereof). The ABK free-particle restriction is lifted in a discussion of an explicit arrival-time set-up featuring a charged particle moving in a constant magnetic field. A natural generalization of the ABK distribution is in this case shown to be critically gauge-dependent. A direct comparison to the QF distribution, which does not exhibit this flaw, is drawn (its acknowledged drawback concerning the quantum backflow effect notwithstanding).
