Hierarchical H-ZSM5 zeolites based on natural kaolinite as a high-performance catalyst for methanol to aromatic hydrocarbons conversion

Polyethylene upcycling to aromatics by pulse pressurized catalytic pyrolysis

To address the challenging issues of waste plastic pollution and petroleum shortage, we report herein a pulse pressurized catalytic pyrolysis process where polyethylene is continuously converted into aromatics using HZSM-5 catalyst incorporated with hydrated SiO2. Pressurization improves the activity of single-pulse pyrolysis of polyethylene by 14.42%. In contrast to the linear decrease of BTEXS relative yield with a K value of - 0.23 under non-pressurized conditions, pressurization results in a notable stability in the latter stage, characterized by a K value of only - 0.063. Comprehensive catalyst characterization demonstrates that pressurization promotes the release of water from hydrated SiO2, enabling HZSM-5 to effectively undergo dealumination and obtain suitable acidity and pore structure, and ultimately enhancing the resistance to carbon deposition. In summary, pressurization improves both pyrolysis activity and catalysis stability, offering a promising strategy for the high-value utilization of waste plastics.

Effective adsorption of Pb(II) ion from aqueous solution onto ZSM-5 zeolite synthesized from Vietnamese bentonite clay

ZSM-5 zeolite was successfully synthesized from bentonite clay sourced from Lam Dong Province, Vietnam, using the hydrothermal method at 170 °C for 18 h. The synthesized ZSM-5 (SiO2/Al2O3 ratio ~ 34) exhibited a single phase with high crystallinity (91.8%), and a clear and uniform shape. In a detailed examination of the synthesized material's Pb(II) adsorptive capacity, various factors were taken into account, including pH, interaction time, ionic strength, and the amount of adsorbent. Isotherms and kinetics were examined to elucidate the uptake behavior. Study results suggested that Pb(II) ion uptake by ZSM-5 was most appropriately described by the Sips isotherm and intraparticle diffusion kinetic models. The calculated maximum monolayer adsorption capacity according to the Langmuir isotherm model was 48.36 mg/g. Furthermore, the adsorption mechanisms of Pb(II) on ZSM-5 involving electrostatic interactions, ion exchange, and diffusion into pores were demonstrated using the analytical techniques before and after Pb(II) adsorption. These findings demonstrate that ZSM-5 synthesized from bentonite clay exhibits an excellent adsorption capacity for Pb(II), resulting in promising applications for treating drinking water or aqueous industrial waste containing Pb(II) ions.

Evaluating the efficacy of zeolites synthesized from natural clay for the methanol-to-hydrocarbon process

Introducing sustainability into advanced catalytic material design is essential to address growing environmental concerns. Among them, synthesizing inorganic zeolite materials from non-traditional sources (like natural clay) offers several advantages, contributing to sustainability and environmental stewardship. With this objective, we used kaolin to synthesize zeolites with different topologies: SSZ-13 (8-MR with CHA topology), ZSM-5 (10-MR with MFI topology), and Beta (12-MR with BEA topology) (MR: member ring), where a simple and flexible synthetic protocol was adopted without any significant changes. All these zeolites were subjected to catalytic performance evaluation concerning the industrially relevant methanol-to-hydrocarbon (MTH) process. Herein, the kaolin-derived zeolites, especially ZSM-5, led to superior performance and demonstrated enhanced catalyst deactivation-resistant behavior compared to their zeolite counterparts prepared from traditional synthetic routes. Various characterization tools (including under operando conditions) were employed to understand their reactions and deactivation mechanisms. Overall, making zeolites from non-traditional sources presents a pathway for sustainable and environmentally friendly material production, offering benefits such as reduced resource dependence, lower energy consumption, and tailored physicochemical properties beneficial to catalysis. In a broader context, such a research approach contributes to the transition toward a more sustainable and circular economy.

Effects of aging and hydrothermal treatment on the crystallization of ZSM-5 zeolite synthesis from bentonite

In the present study, Lam Dong bentonite clay was utilized as a novel resource to effectively synthesize microporous ZSM-5 zeolite (Si/Al ∼ 40). The effects of aging and hydrothermal treatment on the crystallization of ZSM-5 were carefully investigated. Herein, the aging temperatures of RT, 60, and 80 °C at time intervals of 12, 36, and 60 h, followed by high temperature hydrothermal treatment (170 °C) for 3-18 h were studied. Techniques such as XRD, SEM-EDX, FTIR, TGA-DSC, and BET-BJH were applied to characterize the synthesized ZSM-5. Bentonite clay showed great benefits as a natural resource for ZSM-5 synthesis and is cost efficient, environment friendly, and has a large reserves. The form, size, and crystallinity of ZSM-5 were greatly influenced by aging and hydrothermal treatment conditions. The optimal ZSM-5 product had high purity, crystallinity (∼90%), and porosity (BET ∼380 m² g^-1) as well as thermal stability, which are beneficial for adsorptive and catalytic applications.

Effect of Physicochemical Properties of Co and Mo Modified Natural Sourced Hierarchical ZSM-5 Zeolite Catalysts on Vanillin and Phenol Production from Diphenyl Ether

The conversion of lignocellulose biomass to value-added chemicals is challenging. In this paper, the conversion process of diphenyl ether (DPE) as a model lignin compound to phenol and vanillin compounds involved a bifunctional catalyst in reaching the simultaneous one-pot reaction in mild conditions with a high yield product. The catalysts used in this conversion are hierarchical ZSM-5 zeolites and their cobalt oxide and molybdenum oxide impregnated derivate. The ZSM-5 zeolites were synthesized using alternative precursors from natural resources, i.e., Indonesian natural zeolite and kaolin. The physicochemical properties of the catalysts were determined with various characterization methods, such as: X-ray Diffraction (XRD), Fourier Transform Infra Red (FT-IR), Scanning Electron Microscope - Energy Dispersive X-ray (SEM-EDX), X-ray Fluorescence (XRF), Surface Area Analyzer (SAA), and NH3-Temperature Programmed Desorption (NH3-TPD). The catalytic activity on conversion of DPE substrates showed that the MoOx/HZSM-5 produced the highest %yield for phenol and vanillin products; 31.96% at 250 °C and 7.63% at 200 °C, respectively. The correlation study between the physicochemical properties and the catalytic activity shows that the dominance of weak acid (>40%) and mesoporosity contribution (pore size of ~ 9 nm) play roles in giving the best catalytic activity at low temperatures. Preparation and application of porous materials from coal gasification slag for wastewater treatment: A review

In recent years, coal gasification has been gradually promoted as clean technology, and coal gasification slag (CGS) emissions have increased accordingly. CGS, including coarse slag and fine slag, is rich in SiO₂ and Al₂O₃ and has pozzolanic activity, and thus CGS can be regarded as a cheap source of aluminosilicate. Also, CGS, especially the fine slag, usually contains higher contents of residual carbon which has a large specific surface area and low volatility and hence can be considered as a favorable precursor of activated carbon. Benefiting from these characteristics, CGS can be used to prepare high value-added porous materials, such as zeolite, mesoporous silica, carbon-silicon composite, and porous ceramics, and the obtained structures accommodate both sufficient adsorption capacity and low cost. Here, we review the research advances in characteristics of CGS and preparation methods of CGS-based porous materials, as well as their adsorption performance of heavy metal ions, organic dyes, ammonia nitrogen, and other water pollutants. The current studies indicate that CGS-derived adsorbents are effective and economical alternatives for removing aqueous pollutants. In addition, further research prospects on CGS-based porous materials are proposed.

Comparative study of catalytic conversion of glycerol, a by-product of transesterification, to cyclic hydrocarbons using MCM-22, ZSM-5 and alumina

Recently chemical consumption has increased due to the growth of human population and industrialization. Depleting fuel reserves and increase in chemicals rise has led and researcher to focus on alternative bio based chemicals. Glycerol which is produced as a major byproduct from the trans-esterification reaction of fatty acids for producing biodiesel has been used in this work for conversion to value added products. Conversion of glycerol in presence of alumina, MCM-22 (pure silica based mesoporous catalyst) and ZSM-5 (Si-Al based catalyst) is investigated at different temperature and catalyst weight in a fixed bed reactor. The conversion of glycerol was found to be maximum in presence of alumina whereas maximum liquid products were obtained with ZSM-5. GC/MS analysis confirmed the production of Furan compounds in higher fraction with both alumina as well as ZSM-5 showing the importance of acid sites for the glycerol conversion to higher hydrocarbons. The GC/MS analysis of liquid product obtained in presence of catalyst was also observed with high area% of unconverted glycerol. The order is as follow 54% (MCM-22) > 44% (ZSM-5) > 42.2% (Alumina). For the investigation of the conversion for varying catalyst weight (0–3 g with 0.5 g weight difference), reaction temperature were varied between 450 and 550 °C. Different values of n = 0, 1, 2 etc. were used for the fitting of the respective plot. A change in reaction rate and the rate constant indicated that with the change of temperature, reaction rate was increased. The rate constant value obtained between 0.09 and 0.12 h−1. In all cases 450 °C and catalyst weight of 2.5 g was obtained as optimum for higher liquid yield. TGA analysis of spent catalyst also showed that alumina give high yield (∼50% by weight) of coke as compared to ZSM-5 and MCM-22.

Synthesis of Template-Free ZSM-5 from Rice Husk Ash at Low Temperatures and Its CO2 Adsorption Performance

In this paper, a green synthesis method for ZSM-5 zeolite is explored to reduce the synthesis cost, environmental hazard, and reaction temperatures. For the ZSM-5 samples prepared at low temperatures, the influence of factors such as the hydrothermal temperature, crystallization time, and the number of seeds is systematically investigated. The adsorption isotherm of CO2 is used for fitting analysis of adsorption models and determination of the adsorption selectivity. The results show that the best one among the three samples presents the highest CO2 adsorption capacity of 2.39 mmol/g at 273 K and 15 bar. It is prepared with a hydrothermal temperature of 393 K, crystallization time of 7 days, and a seed crystal of 1 wt %. The dual-site Langmuir model can well describe the experimental data, indicating that double adsorption sites rather than the simple single-layer adsorption are dominant in samples. As the pressure increases, the adsorption capacity calculated by the model is much lower than the actual value with a deviation index of 12.5%. At a pressure of 1 bar, the optimal selectivity is attained with sample L-20, viz., CO2/N2 of 34.3 and CO2/O2 of 70.2. The green synthesis method reported in this research can be used to successfully prepare ZSM-5 zeolite, and it shows excellent CO2 adsorption performance. In addition, the use of low-cost raw materials and template-free synthesis methods will facilitate the large-scale application of green synthesis processes in the future.
