New transitional fossil from late Jurassic of Chile sheds light on the origin of modern crocodiles

Functional and phylogenetic signals in the pectoral girdle of Thalattosuchia and Dyrosauridae (Crocodylomorpha)

Crocodylomorphs have colonized various environments from fully terrestrial to fully aquatic, making it an important clade among archosaurs. A remarkable example of the rich past diversity of Crocodylomorpha Hay, 1930 is the marine colonization undergone by several crocodylomorph lineages, particularly Thalattosuchia Fraas, 1901 during the Early Jurassic-Early Cretaceous, and Dyrosauridae de Stefano, 1903 during the Late Cretaceous-Early Eocene. Thalattosuchia represents the most impressive and singular marine radiation among Crocodylomorpha, occupying various ecological niches, before enigmatically disappearing in the Cretaceous. Dyrosauridae, on the other hand, is known for surviving the end-Cretaceous mass extinction in abundance but subsequently vanished. The evolutionary path undertaken by crocodylomorphs into the aquatic environments and the reasons for their disappearance outside marine extinction events during the Mesozoic remains a mystery. Despite a well-preserved fossil record, attention has primarily centered on craniodental adaptations, overlooking the swimming-related adaptations recorded in the postcranial skeleton. This research primarily involves a comprehensive examination of the pectoral girdle of the most representative members of Thalattosuchia and Dyrosauridae, highlighting their evolutionary trajectories over time. Additionally, this work aims to test the phylogenetic signal residing in the postcranial anatomy of Crocodylomorpha. As such, the most recent and complete Crocodylomorpha phylogenetic dataset has been repurposed: 42 new postcranial characters have been added and several others have been revised to address our phylogenetic question. We stress that postcranial anatomy constitutes an important tool supply to better understand the relations of extinct crocodyliforms, but also offers insights on their development, ecology, and biomechanics.

The Role of Locomotory Ancestry on Secondarily Aquatic Transitions

Land-to-sea evolutionary transitions are great transformations where terrestrial amniote clades returned to aquatic environments. These secondarily aquatic amniote clades include charismatic marine mammal and marine reptile groups, as well as countless semi-aquatic forms that modified their terrestrial locomotor anatomy to varying degrees to be suited for swimming via axial and/or appendicular propulsion. The terrestrial ancestors of secondarily aquatic groups would have started off swimming strikingly differently from one another given their evolutionary histories, as inferred by the way modern terrestrial amniotes swim. With such stark locomotor functional differences between reptiles and mammals, we ask if this impacted these transitions. Axial propulsion appears favored by aquatic descendants of terrestrially sprawling quadrupedal reptiles, with exceptions. Appendicular propulsion is more prevalent across the aquatic descendants of ancestrally parasagittal-postured mammals, particularly early transitioning forms. Ancestral terrestrial anatomical differences that precede secondarily aquatic invasions between mammals and reptiles, as well as the distribution of axial and appendicular swimming in secondarily aquatic clades, may indicate that ancestral terrestrial locomotor anatomy played a role, potentially in both constraint and facilitation, in certain aquatic locomotion styles. This perspective of the land-to-sea transition can lead to new avenues of functional, biomechanical, and developmental study of secondarily aquatic transitions.

The biogeographic history of neosuchian crocodiles and the impact of saltwater tolerance variability

Extant neosuchian crocodiles are represented by only 24 taxa that are confined to the tropics and subtropics. However, at other intervals during their 200 Myr evolutionary history the clade reached considerably higher levels of species-richness, matched by more widespread distributions. Neosuchians have occupied numerous habitats and niches, ranging from dwarf riverine forms to large marine predators. Despite numerous previous studies, several unsolved questions remain with respect to their biogeographic history, including the geographical origins of major groups, e.g. Eusuchia and Neosuchia itself. We carried out the most comprehensive biogeographic analysis of Neosuchia to date, based on a multivariate K-means clustering approach followed by the application of two ancestral area estimation methods (BioGeoBEARS and Bayesian ancestral location estimation) applied to two recently published phylogenies. Our results place the origin of Neosuchia in northwestern Pangaea, with subsequent radiations into Gondwana. Eusuchia probably emerged in the European archipelago during the Late Jurassic/Early Cretaceous, followed by dispersals to the North American and Asian landmasses. We show that putative transoceanic dispersal events are statistically significantly less likely to happen in alligatoroids. This finding is consistent with the saltwater intolerant physiology of extant alligatoroids, bolstering inferences of such intolerance in their ancestral lineages.

The orbitalauricular chord of Alligator: The unusual functional linkage between the earflap and eyelid of Crocodylians

One of the distinctive features of the Crocodylia is the presence of a superficial meatal chamber the aperture of which is regulated by two earflaps. The movements of the upper earflap have been detailed by multiple workers, however, the mechanics of the lower earflap remain unresolved. The present study was undertaken to document the mechanics of the lower earflap in the American alligator, Alligator mississippiensis, and to explore the functional bases of coordinated movements between the lower earflap and lower eyelid in this species. This anatomical system was examined using a combination of fresh dissection, histology, and micro‐CT analyses applied to post‐embryonic specimens. The rostral margin of the lower earflap is tightly bound to a block of dense connective tissue herein termed the orbitalauricular chord. The orbitalauricular chord is anatomically distinct from both a ligament and a tendon. The dorsal surface of the orbitalauricular chord is attached to a slip of the levator palpebra, while the ventral surface is attached to a slip of the depressor palpebra. These attachments produce a simple mechanism for the elevation and depression of the lower earflap, and thus the opening and closing of the meatal aperture. The caudal surface of the orbitalauricular chord has connective tissue links to the rostral margin of the lower earflap. The morphology of the orbitalauricular chord appears to explain both the mechanics of the lower earflap and the functional coupling between the lower eyelid and lower earflap.
