Role of cohesion in the flow of active particles through bottlenecks

The pendant drop experiment for aggregates of cohesive granular particles

The pendant drop experiment can be used to study the interfacial tension of a liquid. Here we perform a similar experiment for a granular system. When a dense aggregate of cohesive particles extrudes from an orifice, a cluster of particles detaches, similar to the detachment of a liquid drop. We investigate the volume of the clusters formed from close-packed cohesive oil droplets in an aqueous solution. Our findings reveal that the volume of the clusters depends on the size of the orifice as well as the cohesion strength. Interestingly, we observe that the droplet size does not significantly impact the average cluster volume. We establish a simple scaling law that governs the size of a granular cluster which differs from that of a classic pendant drop. We propose that the key difference between continuum and granular systems is the constraints on rearrangements within the cohesive particles that prevent the clusters from adopting a minimal surface structure, as is the case for a classic pendant drop.

Motility-Induced Clustering of Active Particles under Soft Confinement

We investigate the structural and dynamic properties of active Brownian particles (APs) confined within a soft annulus-shaped channel. Depending on the strength of the confinement and the Péclet number, we observe a novel reentrant behavior that is not present in unconfined systems. Our findings are substantiated by numerical simulations and analytical considerations, revealing that this behavior arises from the strong coupling between the Péclet number and the effective confining dimensionality of the APs. Our work highlights the peculiarities of soft boundaries for APs and how clogging can be avoided under such conditions.

Clogging of noncohesive suspensions through constrictions using an efficient discrete particle solver with unresolved fluid flow

When objects are forced to flow through constrictions their transport can be frustrated temporarily or permanently due to the formation of arches in the region of the bottleneck. While such systems have been intensively studied in the case of solid particles in a gas phase being forced by gravitational forces, the case of solid particles suspended in a liquid phase, forced by the liquid itself, has received much less attention. In this case, the influence of the liquid flow on the transport efficiency is not well understood yet, leading to several apparently trivial but yet unanswered questions, e.g., would an increase of the liquid flow improve the transport of particles or worsen it? Although some experimental data are already available, they lack enough detail to give a complete answer to such a question. Numerical models would be needed to scrutinize the system deeper. In this paper, we study this system making use of an advanced discrete particle solver (mercurydpm) and an approximated numerical model for the liquid drag and compare the results with experimental data.

Capture and transport of rod-shaped cargo via programmable active particles

We study the influence of the cargo shape on the capture and transport process of colloidal rods via swarms of active particles using Brownian dynamics simulations. Starting at random initial conditions, active particles that interact via the Lennard-Jones potential and possess a tuneable speed are utilised to capture passive rods inside a hexagonal cage of individually addressable units. By adjusting the velocity of the individual active particles, the rod can then be transported. To guarantee a successful capture process (with a strong localisation), we find that specific geometric and energetic constraints have to be met; i.e., the length of the rod must approximately be in the vicinity of an odd multiple of the lattice constant of the hexagonal cage, and the Lennard-Jones interaction strength must be in the range of [Formula: see text] to [Formula: see text]. If the cargo aspect ratio gets too large, the subsequent transport of successfully captured rods can fail. For systems where transport is possible, an increase in the cargo aspect ratio decreases the achievable transport velocity. Our work shows that the particle shape must be considered while designing interaction rules to accomplish specific tasks via groups of controllable units.

Anchoring Effect of an Obstacle in the Silo Unclogging Process

Contrary to the proven beneficial role that placing an obstacle above a silo exit has in clogging prevention, we demonstrate that, when the system is gently shaken, this passive element has a twofold effect in the clogging destruction process. On one side, the obstacle eases the destruction of weak arches, a phenomenon that can be explained by the pressure screening that it causes in the outlet proximities. But on the other side, we discover that the obstacle presence leads to the development of a few very strong arches. These arches, which dominate in the heavy tailed distributions of unclogging times, correlate with configurations where the number of particles contacting the obstacle from below are higher than the average; hence suggesting that the obstacle acts as an anchoring point for the granular packing. This finding may help one to understand the ambiguous effect of obstacles in the bottleneck flow of other systems, such as pedestrians evacuating a room or active matter in general.
