Adsorption, thermodynamic, and quantum chemical investigations of an ionic liquid that inhibits corrosion of carbon steel in chloride solutions

In this work, we study the efficiency of N1, N3-dibenzyl-N1, N1, N3, N3-tetramethylpropane-1,3-diaminium chloride, as anticorrosion. This compound exhibits potential as a prospective remedy to stop the deterioration of carbon steel caused by corrosion in 1.0 M HCl. The synthesis of this compound is described in a comprehensive manner, and its composition is supported by a range of precise analytical approaches such as elemental analysis, and mass spectroscopy. Based on the findings of the investigation, the synthesized Gemini ionic liquid demonstrates a robust capacity to slow down the rate at which the metal corrodes. The Prepared compound was evaluation by electrochemical and morphology study. Our results revealed that elevating the inhibitor concentration led to an augmentation in inhibition effectiveness, reaching up to 94.8% at 200 ppm of the synthesized compound at 298 K. It is crucial to emphasize that the recently prepared Gemini ionic liquid is consistent with the Langmuir adsorption model and function as a mixed inhibitor, participating in the physio-chemisorption process of adsorption.

In-Depth Insight into Corrosion Inhibition Performance of Sweet Potato Leaf Extract as a Green and Efficient Inhibitor for 6N01 Al Alloy in the Seawater: Experimental and Theoretical Perspectives

Corrosion protection of metal has become an important and urgent topic, which requires the development of an inexpensive, environmentally friendly, and highly efficient corrosion inhibitor. Herein, a sweet potato leaf extract (SPL) was obtained by a simple water-based extraction method and then as a green corrosion inhibitor for 6N01 Al alloy in the seawater was well investigated by the weight loss method and various electrochemical tests. Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) and ultraviolet-visible (UV-vis) spectroscopies were carried out to investigate the compositions of SPL. The findings from the potentiodynamic polarization (PDP) curves suggest that SPL functions as a typical mixed-type corrosion inhibitor. Notably, the maximum corrosion inhibition efficiency reaches 94.6% following a 36 h immersion period at 25 °C. The adsorption behavior of SPL on the Al alloy surface belongs to the Langmuir adsorption isotherm. The Gibbs free energy value illustrates that the adsorption of SPL contains both physisorption and chemisorption. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) indicate that SPL is firmly attached to the Al alloy surface by making a protective layer, which can effectively inhibit the corrosion of the Al alloy in the seawater. Furthermore, quantum chemical calculations were applied to validate the chemical adsorption and elucidate the relationship between the electronic structure of the active components in SPL and their effectiveness in corrosion inhibition.

Zwitterion modified chitosan as a high-performance corrosion inhibitor for mild steel in hydrochloric acid solution

Herein, a novel chitosan Schiff base (CS-FGA) as a sustainable corrosion inhibitor has been successfully synthesized via a simple amidation reaction by using an imidazolium zwitterion and chitosan (CS). The corrosion inhibition property of CS-FGA for mild steel (MS) in a 1.0 M HCl solution was studied by various electrochemical tests and physical characterization methods. The findings indicate that the maximum inhibition efficiency of CS-FGA as a mixed-type inhibitor for MS in 1.0 M HCl solution with 400 mg L-1 reaches 97.6 %, much much higher than the CS and the recently reported chitosan-based inhibitors. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), atomic force microscopy (AFM), and water contact angle (WCA) results reveal that the CS-FGA molecules firmly adsorb on the MS surface to form a protective layer. The adsorption of CS-FGA on the MS surface belongs to the Langmuir adsorption isotherm containing both the physisorption and chemisorption. According to the X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and UV-vis spectrum, FeN bonds presented on the MS surface further prove the chemisorption between CS-FGA and Fe to generate the stable protective layer. Additionally, theoretical calculations from quantum chemical calculation (DFT) and molecular simulations (MD) were performed to reveal the inhibition mechanism of CS-FGA.

Flawless polyaniline coating for preservation and corrosion protection of ancient steel spearheads: an archaeological study from military museum, Al-Qala, Egypt

The purpose of this research was to examine the viability of applying a flawless polyaniline coating on steel spearheads to preserve them and protect them from corrosion. The spearpoints, thought to be archaeologically significant, were acquired from the Military Museum in Al-Qala, Egypt. X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy were used to characterize the spearheads chemical composition and microstructure (EDX). The spearheads were determined to be constructed of steel and to have a coating of ferric oxide and other corrosion products on their exteriors. After that, a flawless polyaniline coating was electrochemically deposited onto the spearpoints in a way that was both quick and cheap. Many types of corrosion tests, such as electrochemical impedance spectroscopy and potentiodynamic polarization (PDP) readings, were used to determine the coating's effectiveness. The steel spearheads' findings revealed a significant improvement in their resistance to corrosion after being coated with flawless polyaniline. The coating served as a barrier, blocking out water and other corrosive substances and slowing the buildup of corrosion byproducts on the spearpoints. In conclusion, our research shows that a flawless polyaniline coating may be an effective anti-corrosion treatment for ancient steel artifacts. The approach is straightforward, cheap, and readily scalable for massive conservation efforts.

Investigation of olive leaf extract as a potential environmentally-friendly corrosion inhibitor for carbon steel

Corrosion constitutes a significant issue in industries that handle metals. Corrosion inhibitors with a low impact on the environment provide a significant economic benefit in various engineering applications. In this work, the effectiveness of olive leaves extract is evaluated as a cost-effective and environmentally-friendly corrosion inhibitor. The corrosion of carbon steel in different concentrations of hydrochloric acid (0.1, 1.0, and 2.0 M) when protected by an aqueous solution of olive leaf extract of concentrations ranging from 10 to 60 ppm is investigated. A green extraction process based upon water extraction is used to ensure minimum impact on the environment. Results show that the corrosion inhibition efficiency increased as the concentration of the olive leaf extract increased. An analysis of variance showed a significant effect of acidic molarity, temperature, and inhibitor concentration on the corrosion rate. A significant statistical model indicates that the inhibitor exhibits higher efficiencies at higher acidic molarity. Results of SEM and EDX also demonstrated that a protective film of the inhibitor on the specimen surface plays a role in corrosion inhibition, suggesting that the inhibitor molecules are adsorbed at the interface between the carbon steel and the acid solution. The study provides an insight on the corrosion mechanism and highlights the potential of olive oil extract as an eco-friendly alternative to traditional corrosion inhibitors.

Sustainable development of an effective anti-corrosion film over the St12-steel surface against seawater attacks using Ce(III) ions/tri-sodium phosphate anions

One application of organic compounds is to utilize them as corrosion inhibitors in acidic environments to diminish steel corrosion. These inhibitors do not show very good inhibition properties in saline (NaCl) environments. There have been many studies on boosting these inhibitors' performance in such environments (especially Cl^- containing media). One of the ways that have been proposed is the use of organic and inorganic inhibitors, simultaneously. The synergistic effect of these inhibitors has shown promising results in reducing steel corrosion. In this study, cerium(III) nitrate and tri-sodium phosphate (TSP) was used as organic and inorganic inhibitors to control the corrosion of steel in a 3.5 wt.% NaCl environment. The corrosion measurements were conducted in the 3.5 wt.% NaCl environment by EIS and polarization methods. Surface studies were done by SEM, Raman, GIXRD, and EDS methods. Corrosion studies (EIS and polarization) have revealed that when 500 ppm of Ce(NO₃)₃ and 500 ppm of TSP are added to the 3.5 wt.% NaCl medium, the highest synergism index (1.27) and inhibition efficiency (73.7%) are achieved. Also, by adding 500Ce-500TPS to the solution, i_corr and R_ct of steel decreased by about 80% and increased approximately 4-fold, respectively. This improvement in the steel performance against corrosion in the presence of an equal ratio of Ce(NO₃)₃ and TSP is the outcome of the formation of a hydrophobic dense film (consisting of Ce(OH)₃, Ce/Fe-phosphate complexes) on the metal surface. This claim has been proven by SEM/EDS, contact angel, FT-IR, and XRD analysis.

Preparation of Chitosan/β-Cyclodextrin Composite Membrane and Its Adsorption Mechanism for Proteins

A significant portion of the protein in food waste will contaminate the water. The chitosan/modified β-cyclodextrin (CS/β-CDP) composite membranes were prepared for the adsorption of bovine serum albumin (BSA) in this work to solve the problem of poor adsorption protein performance and easy disintegration by a pure chitosan membrane. A thorough investigation was conducted into the effects of the preparation conditions (the mass ratio of CS and β-CDP, preparation temperature, and glutaraldehyde addition) and adsorption conditions (temperature and pH) on the created CS/β-CDP composite membrane. The physical and chemical properties of pure CS membrane and CS/β-CDP composite membrane were investigated. The results showed that CS/β-CDP composite membrane has better tensile strength, elongation at break, Young's modulus, contact angle properties, and lower swelling degree. The physicochemical and morphological attributes of composite membranes before and after the adsorption of BSA were characterized by SEM, FT-IR, and XRD. The results showed that the CS/β-CDP composite membrane adsorbed BSA by both physical and chemical mechanisms, and the adsorption isotherm, kinetics, and thermodynamic experiments further confirmed its adsorption mechanism. As a result, the CS/β-CDP composite membrane of absorbing BSA was successfully fabricated, demonstrating the potential application prospect in environmental protection.

Cost-effective and green additives of pozzolanic material derived from the waste of alum sludge for successful replacement of portland cement

The major objective of this study was to examine the viability of using 5, 10, or 15 mass% of Activated Alum Sludge waste (AAS) instead of Ordinary Portland Cement (OPC) as a pozzolanic ingredient in concrete. This fundamental inquiry framed the investigation and OPC-AAS-hardened composites were studied to see whether they may benefit from inexpensive nanocomposites in terms of improved physical properties, mechanical strength, and resistance to heat and flame. The investigation set out to see how inexpensive nanocomposite might be put to use and the nanoparticles of CuFe₂O₄ spinel with an average size of less than 50 nm were successfully manufactured. Many different OPC-AAS-hardened composites benefit from the addition of CuFe₂O₄ spinel, which increases the composites' resistance to fire and enhances their physicomechanical properties at roughly average curing ages. Synthesized CuFe₂O₄ spinel was shown to have desirable characteristics by TGA/DTG and XRD. By using these methods, we were able to identify a broad variety of hydration yields, including C-S-Hs, C-A-S-Hs, C-F-S-Hs, and Cu-S-Hs, that enhance the physicomechanical properties and thermal resistivity of OPC-AAS-hardened composites as a whole. The composite material comprising 90% OPC, 10% AAS waste, and 2% CuFe₂O₄ has several positive economic and environmental outcomes.

Vicia faba peel extracts bearing fatty acids moieties as a cost-effective and green corrosion inhibitor for mild steel in marine water: computational and electrochemical studies

The goal of this research is to determine what chemicals are present in two different extracts (hexane and acetone) of Vicia faba (family Fabaceae, VF) peels and evaluate their effectiveness as a corrosion inhibitor on mild steel in a saline media containing 3.5% sodium chloride. Gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC/MS) was used to determine the composition of various extracts. It was determined that fourteen different chemicals were present in the hexane extract, the most prominent of which were octacosane, tetrasodium tetracontane, palmitic acid, and ethyl palmitate. Heptacosane, lauric acid, myristic acid, ethyl palmitate, and methyl stearate were some of the 13 chemicals found in the acetone extract. Using open circuit potential, potentiodynamic polarisation, and electrochemical impedance spectroscopic techniques, we can approximate the inhibitory effects of (VF) extracts on mild steel. The most effective inhibitory concentrations were found to be 200 ppm for both the hexane and acetone extracts (97.84% for the hexane extract and 88.67% for the acetone extract). Evaluation experiments were conducted at 298 K, with a 3.5% (wt/v) NaCl content and a flow velocity of about 250 rpm. Langmuir adsorption isotherm shows that the two extracts function as a mixed-type inhibitor in nature. Docking models were used to investigate the putative mechanism of corrosion inhibition, and GC/MS was used to identify the major and secondary components of the two extracts. Surface roughness values were calculated after analyzing the morphology of the metal's surface with and without (VF) using a scanning electron microscope (SEM). The results showed that throughout the surface of the mild steel, a thick adsorbate layer was formed. Quantum chemical calculations conducted on the two extracts as part of the theoretical research of quantum chemical calculation demonstrated a connection between the experimental analysis results and the theoretical study of the major chemical components.

Effect of pH fluctuations on the biodegradability of nanocomposite Mg-alloy in simulated bodily fluids

According to the National Institute of Health, the biodegradability, non-toxic nature, and remarkable natural and mechanical properties of magnesium and its components make them desirable choices for use in the production of supplies for biomedical implantation. Simulated bodily fluid (SBF) is used as a standard electrolyte for in vitro corrosion research. Each SBF module's independent and synergistic corrosion effects are studied in this study. Artificial pH variations increase degradation, according to the results. This experiment examined the Mg corrosion submerged in a SBF solution. The effect of pH changes on the rate of corrosion of Mg immersed in standard SBF solution was investigated. According to the previously published study, the corrosion process of Mg has been confirmed by scanning electron microscopy observations of damaged surface morphology. Because of these investigations, pH 7 was selected as the pH for bodily fluids since it is neutral.
