Controllable synthesis of sphere-shaped interconnected interlinked binder-free nickel sulfide@nickel foam for high-performance supercapacitor applications

Improving the Conversion Ratio of QDSCs via the Passivation Effects of NiS

To revolutionize the photochemical efficiency of quantum dots sensitized solar cells (QDSSCs) devices, herein, a passivation of the cells with multilayer material has been developed for heterojunctions TiO2/NiS/MnS/HI-30/Pt devices. In this study, NiS and MnS were deposited on a photoanode for the first time as passivated photon absorbers at room temperature. The adoption of NiS as a passisvative layer could tailor the active surface area and improve the photochemical properties of the newly modified cells. The vibrational shifts obtained from the Raman spectra imply that the energy change is influenced by the surface effect, giving rise to better electronic conductivity. The electrochemical stability and durability test for the N/M-3 device slows down and remains at 8.88% of its initial current after 3500 s, as compared to the N/M-1 device at 7.20%. The disparity in charge recombination implies that both the outer and inner parts of the nanoporous material are involved in the photogeneration reaction. The hybridized N/M-3 cell device reveals the highest current density with a low potential onset, indicating that power conversion occurs more easily because photons tend to be adsorbed easily on the surface of the MnS. The Nyquist plot for N/M-1 and N/M-3 promotes the faster transport of electrolytic ions across the TiO2/NiS/MnS, providing a good interaction for the electrolyte. The I-J Value of 9.94% shows that the passivation with the NiS layer promotes electron transport and enhances the performance of the modified cells. The passivation of the TiO2 layer with NiS attains a better power conversion efficiency among the scant studies so far on the surface passivation of QDSCs.

Resent Development of Binder-Free Electrodes of Transition Metal Oxides and Nanohybrids for High Performance Supercapacitors - A Review

The entire world is aware of the serious issue of global warming and therefore utilizing renewable energy sources is the most encouraging steps toward solving energy crises, and as a result, energy storage solutions are necessary. The supercapacitors (SCs) have a high-power density and a long cycle life, they are promising as an electrochemical conversion and storage device. In order to achieve high electrochemical performance, electrode fabrication must be implemented properly. Electrochemically inactive and insulating binders are utilized in the conventional slurry coating method of making electrodes to provide adhesion between the electrode material and the substrate. This results in an undesirable "dead mass," which lowers the overall device performance. In this review, we focused on binder-free SCs electrodes based on transition metal oxides and composites. With the best examples providing the critical aspects, the benefits of binder-free electrodes over slurry-coated electrodes are addressed. Additionally, different metal-oxides used in the fabrication of binder-free electrodes are assessed, taking into account the various synthesis methods, giving an overall picture of the work done for binder-free electrodes. The future outlook is provided along with the benefits and drawbacks of binder-free electrodes based on transition metal oxides.

Tailoring the phase composition of carbon-coated nickel sulfides to achieve a high specific capacitance

As significant transition metal sulfides, nickel sulfides integrated with carbon were successfully synthesized in the presence of polyethylenimine and glutaraldehyde with a solvothermal route at 180 °C followed by carbonization. Glutaraldehyde prevented complete sulfur loss and allowed the formation of a mixed phase of nickel sulfide. The electrochemical performances of pure NiS2, NiS@C0, NiS2/NiS@C1, and NiS2/NiS@C2 electrodes were tested by a series of measurements. The specific capacitances obtained from GCD analysis were 698, 1160, 1484, and 908 F g-1 at 1 A g-1 for NiS2, NiS@C0, NiS2/NiS@C1, and NiS2/NiS@C2 electrodes, respectively. The results implied that the NiS2/NiS@C1 electrode possessed the highest specific capacitances and this study can be a good reference for the preparation of other hybrid metal sulfides as pseudocapacitive electrode materials.

vs-NiS2/NiS Heterostructures Achieving Ultralow Overpotential in Alkaline Hydrogen Evolution

The hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) usually has slow kinetics in an alkaline environment because of the lack of binding protons. Herein, we use a simple strategy to prepare NiS₂/NiS heterostructure (HS) electrocatalysts rich in sulfur vacancies (v_s). The v_s-NiS₂/NiS HSs demonstrate an ultralow overpotential of 44 mV at the current density of 10 mA cm^-2 and corresponding Tafel slope of 42 mV dec^-1. The improved activity and accelerated reaction kinetics of v_s-NiS₂/NiS HSs are derived from the dual regulation of morphology engineering and defect engineering, which not only increases the number and exposure of active sites but also optimizes the adsorption of active sites and active species. This work provides a potential non-noble metal candidate for efficient hydrogen evolution in an alkaline environment and a feasible method for constructing a high-performance electrocatalyst.
