Modeling Heterogeneous Catalysis Using Quantum Computers: An Academic and Industry Perspective

Heterogeneous catalysis plays a critical role in many industrial processes, including the production of fuels, chemicals, and pharmaceuticals, and research to improve current catalytic processes is important to make the chemical industry more sustainable. Despite its importance, the challenge of identifying optimal catalysts with the required activity and selectivity persists, demanding a detailed understanding of the complex interactions between catalysts and reactants at various length and time scales. Density functional theory (DFT) has been the workhorse in modeling heterogeneous catalysis for more than three decades. While DFT has been instrumental, this review explores the application of quantum computing algorithms in modeling heterogeneous catalysis, which could bring a paradigm shift in our approach to understanding catalytic interfaces. Bridging academic and industrial perspectives by focusing on emerging materials, such as multicomponent alloys, single-atom catalysts, and magnetic catalysts, we delve into the limitations of DFT in capturing strong correlation effects and spin-related phenomena. The review also presents important algorithms and their applications relevant to heterogeneous catalysis modeling to showcase advancements in the field. Additionally, the review explores embedding strategies where quantum computing algorithms handle strongly correlated regions, while traditional quantum chemistry algorithms address the remainder, thereby offering a promising approach for large-scale heterogeneous catalysis modeling. Looking forward, ongoing investments by academia and industry reflect a growing enthusiasm for quantum computing's potential in heterogeneous catalysis research. The review concludes by envisioning a future where quantum computing algorithms seamlessly integrate into research workflows, propelling us into a new era of computational chemistry and thereby reshaping the landscape of modeling heterogeneous catalysis.

CKineticsDB─An Extensible and FAIR Data Management Framework and Datahub for Multiscale Modeling in Heterogeneous Catalysis

A great advantage of computational research is its reproducibility and reusability. However, an enormous amount of computational research data in heterogeneous catalysis is barricaded due to logistical limitations. Sufficient provenance and characterization of data and computational environment, with uniform organization and easy accessibility, can allow the development of software tools for integration across the multiscale modeling workflow. Here, we develop the Chemical Kinetics Database, CKineticsDB, a state-of-the-art datahub for multiscale modeling, designed to be compliant with the FAIR guiding principles for scientific data management. CKineticsDB utilizes a MongoDB back-end for extensibility and adaptation to varying data formats, with a referencing-based data model to reduce redundancy in storage. We have developed a Python software program for data processing operations and with built-in features to extract data for common applications. CKineticsDB evaluates the incoming data for quality and uniformity, retains curated information from simulations, enables accurate regeneration of publication results, optimizes storage, and allows the selective retrieval of files based on domain-relevant catalyst and simulation parameters. CKineticsDB provides data from multiple scales of theory (ab initio calculations, thermochemistry, and microkinetic models) to accelerate the development of new reaction pathways, kinetic analysis of reaction mechanisms, and catalysis discovery, along with several data-driven applications.

Dynamic vs static behaviour of a supported nanoparticle with reaction-induced catalytic sites in a lattice model

Modern literature shows a rapidly growing interest to the supported nanocatalysts with dynamic behaviour under reaction conditions. This new frontier of heterogeneous catalysis is recognized as one of the most challenging and worthy of consideration from all possible angles. In this context, a previously suggested lattice model is used to get an insight, by means of kinetic Monte Carlo, into the influence of the mobility of reaction-induced catalytic sites of a two-dimensional supported nanoparticle on the system behaviour. The results speak in favour of feasibility of dynamic nanocatalysts with self-organized structures capable of robust functioning. This approach, from the macroscopic end, is believed to be a useful complement to ever developing experimental and first principle approaches.

Statistical learning goes beyond the d-band model providing the thermochemistry of adsorbates on transition metals

The rational design of heterogeneous catalysts relies on the efficient survey of mechanisms by density functional theory (DFT). However, massive reaction networks cannot be sampled effectively as they grow exponentially with the size of reactants. Here we present a statistical principal component analysis and regression applied to the DFT thermochemical data of 71 C\documentclass[12pt]{minimal} \usepackage{amsmath} \usepackage{wasysym} \usepackage{amsfonts} \usepackage{amssymb} \usepackage{amsbsy} \usepackage{mathrsfs} \usepackage{upgreek} \setlength{\oddsidemargin}{-69pt} \begin{document}$${}_{1}$$\end{document}1–C\documentclass[12pt]{minimal} \usepackage{amsmath} \usepackage{wasysym} \usepackage{amsfonts} \usepackage{amssymb} \usepackage{amsbsy} \usepackage{mathrsfs} \usepackage{upgreek} \setlength{\oddsidemargin}{-69pt} \begin{document}$${}_{2}$$\end{document}2 species on 12 close-packed metal surfaces. Adsorption is controlled by covalent (\documentclass[12pt]{minimal} \usepackage{amsmath} \usepackage{wasysym} \usepackage{amsfonts} \usepackage{amssymb} \usepackage{amsbsy} \usepackage{mathrsfs} \usepackage{upgreek} \setlength{\oddsidemargin}{-69pt} \begin{document}$$d$$\end{document}d-band center) and ionic terms (reduction potential), modulated by conjugation and conformational contributions. All formation energies can be reproduced from only three key intermediates (predictors) calculated with DFT. The results agree with accurate experimental measurements having error bars comparable to those of DFT. The procedure can be extended to single-atom and near-surface alloys reducing the number of explicit DFT calculation needed by a factor of 20, thus paving the way for a rapid and accurate survey of whole reaction networks on multimetallic surfaces.

Assessing catalytic mechanisms using DFT calculations greatly aids catalyst design, but is impractical for large molecules. Here the authors develop a statistical learning-based thermochemical model for estimating adsorption of organics onto metals, retaining DFT accuracy while reducing the number of calculations by a factor of 20.
