Abstract
One-carbon (1C) metabolism is a central biochemical pathway that plays a crucial role in methylation reactions, amino acid synthesis, and nucleotide production, making it essential for plant growth. Recent advances in omics technologies, including transcriptomics, proteomics, and metabolomics, have provided comprehensive insights into the regulation of 1C metabolism in wheat, one of the world's main crops, and in the model plant Arabidopsis. Genetic manipulation through overexpression and loss-of-function studies has further revealed the roles of specific genes in modulating 1C fluxes and regulating key intermediates, such as methionine, S-adenosyl methionine, and folates. These studies have also demonstrated changes in methylation patterns as well as disruptions in growth and nutrient homeostasis. The integration of these analyses has highlighted complex feedback mechanisms within 1C metabolism that coordinate responses to environmental and developmental signals. Notably, enzymes such as serine hydroxymethyltransferase and S-adenosylmethionine synthetase have emerged as critical nodes, linking 1C metabolism with broader metabolic networks, including nitrogen and sulfur metabolism. This review synthesizes findings from recent omics and genetic studies to outline the dynamic regulation of 1C metabolism, offering a comprehensive framework for exploring its potential applications in crop improvement.

Abstract
Over the last half-century, the widespread use of synthetic chemical fertilizers has boosted crop yields but caused noticeable environmental damage. In recent years, the application of humic substances to increase plant growth and crop yield has gained considerable interest, largely due to their organic origin and their ability to reduce nutrient losses while enhancing plant nutrient use efficiency. Humalite, found exclusively in large deposits in southern Alberta, Canada, is rich in humic substances and has low levels of unwanted ash and heavy metals, which makes it particularly valuable for agricultural applications. However, its effects on canola, the largest oilseed crop in Canada and the second-largest in the world, have yet to be evaluated. This study investigated the effects of five Humalite rates (0, 200, 400, 800, and 1600 kg ha-1) in combination with nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium (NPK) applied at recommended levels, on canola growth, soil nitrogen availability, plant nutrient uptake, photosynthesis, seed yield, seed oil content, and nitrogen use efficiency under controlled environmental conditions. The results demonstrated that Humalite application significantly enhanced soil nitrogen availability, uptake of macro- and micronutrients (N, P, K, S, Mg, Mn, B, Fe and Zn), shoot and root biomass, net photosynthesis, and water use efficiency as compared to the NPK alone treatment. The application of Humalite also led to increased seed yield, seed oil content, and nitrogen use efficiency. Taken together, Humalite could serve as an effective organic soil amendment to enhance canola growth and yield while enhancing fertilizer use efficiency.

Abstract
Reductions in sulfur (S) atmospheric deposition in recent decades have been attributed to S deficiencies in crops. Similarly, global soil selenium (Se) concentrations were predicted to drop, particularly in Europe, due to increases in leaching attributed to increases in aridity. Given its international importance in agriculture, reductions of essential elements, including S and Se, in European soils could have important impacts on nutrition and human health. Our objectives were to model current soil S and Se levels in Europe and predict concentration changes for the 21st century. We interrogated four machine-learning (ML) techniques, but after critical evaluation, only outputs for linear support vector regression (Lin-SVR) models for S and Se and the multilayer perceptron model (MLP) for Se were consistent with known mechanisms reported in literature. Other models exhibited overfitting even when differences in training and testing performance were low or non-existent. Furthermore, our results highlight that similarly performing models based on RMSE or R2 can lead to drastically different predictions and conclusions, thus highlighting the need to interrogate machine learning models and to ensure they are consistent with known mechanisms reported in the literature. Both elements exhibited similar spatial patterns with predicted gains in Scandinavia versus losses in the central and Mediterranean regions of Europe, respectively, by the end of the 21st century for an extreme climate scenario. The median change was -5.5% for S (Lin-SVR) and -3.5% (MLP) and -4.0% (Lin-SVR) for Se. For both elements, modeled losses were driven by decreases in soil organic carbon, S and Se atmospheric deposition, and gains were driven by increases in evapotranspiration.

Abstract
Sulfur fertilization plays a crucial role in wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) production, influencing both protein concentration and grain yield. Wheat, being one of the most important food crops globally, requires efficient management of essential nutrients, including sulfur and nitrogen, to achieve optimal production. This study aimed to quantify the effect of sulfur fertilization on wheat protein concentration and grain yield and the relationship with nitrogen through two complementary methods: a comprehensive meta-analysis and a controlled greenhouse experiment. The meta-analysis, encompassing 55 studies from 20 countries with 545 comparisons, quantified the overall response of wheat to sulfur fertilization in diverse field environments, examining the effects based on soil texture and organic matter content. The greenhouse study investigated the effects of varying sulfur application rates and sources on protein concentration and grain yield and analyzed the relationship between sulfur and nitrogen concentrations in the grain. The meta-analysis showed overall positive effects of sulfur application on both protein concentration (2.1%) and grain yield (4.2%), with the magnitude of these effects varying based on soil texture and organic matter content. Sandy soils and soils with low organic matter content exhibited the most pronounced responses to sulfur fertilization. The greenhouse experiment revealed responses of both protein concentration and grain yield to increasing sulfur application rates, indicating an optimal rate beyond which additional sulfur may not provide further benefits. A strong positive correlation between sulfur and nitrogen concentrations in the grain highlighted their interdependence in wheat nutrition. These findings emphasize the importance of considering soil properties and the sulfur–nitrogen interaction when developing site-specific sulfur fertilization strategies for wheat. The results provide valuable insights for optimizing grain yield and protein concentration, contributing to more sustainable and efficient wheat production systems.

Abstract
Sulfur (S) is an essential macronutrient for plants and its availability in soils is an important determinant for growth and development. Current regulatory policies aimed at reducing industrial S emissions together with changes in agronomical practices have led to a decline in S contents in soils worldwide. Deficiency of sulfate-the primary form of S accessible to plants in soil-has adverse effects on both crop yield and nutritional quality. Hence, recent research has increasingly focused on unraveling the molecular mechanisms through which plants detect and adapt to a limiting supply of sulfate. A significant part of these studies involves the use of omics technologies and has generated comprehensive catalogs of sulfate deficiency-responsive genes and processes, principally in Arabidopsis together with a few studies centering on crop species such as wheat, rice, or members of the Brassica genus. Although we know that sulfate deficiency elicits an important reprogramming of the transcriptome, the transcriptional regulators orchestrating this response are not yet well understood. In this review, we summarize our current knowledge of gene expression responses to sulfate deficiency and recent efforts towards the identification of the transcription factors that are involved in controlling these responses. We further compare the transcriptional response and putative regulators between Arabidopsis and two important crop species, rice and tomato, to gain insights into common mechanisms of the response to sulfate deficiency.

Abstract
KEY MESSAGE Different wheat QTLs were associated to the free asparagine content of grain grown in four different conditions. Environmental effects are a key factor when selecting for low acrylamide-forming potential. The amount of free asparagine in grain of a wheat genotype determines its potential to form harmful acrylamide in derivative food products. Here, we explored the variation in the free asparagine, aspartate, glutamine and glutamate contents of 485 accessions reflecting wheat worldwide diversity to define the genetic architecture governing the accumulation of these amino acids in grain. Accessions were grown under high and low nitrogen availability and in water-deficient and well-watered conditions, and plant and grain phenotypes were measured. Free amino acid contents of grain varied from 0.01 to 1.02 mg g-1 among genotypes in a highly heritable way that did not correlate strongly with grain yield, protein content, specific weight, thousand-kernel weight or heading date. Mean free asparagine content was 4% higher under high nitrogen and 3% higher in water-deficient conditions. After genotyping the accessions, single-locus and multi-locus genome-wide association study models were used to identify several QTLs for free asparagine content located on nine chromosomes. Each QTL was associated with a single amino acid and growing environment, and none of the QTLs colocalised with genes known to be involved in the corresponding amino acid metabolism. This suggests that free asparagine content is controlled by several loci with minor effects interacting with the environment. We conclude that breeding for reduced asparagine content is feasible, but should be firmly based on multi-environment field trials. KEY MESSAGE Different wheat QTLs were associated to the free asparagine content of grain grown in four different conditions. Environmental effects are a key factor when selecting for low acrylamide-forming potential.

Abstract
The influence of drought induced by polyethylene glycol (PEG) and the alleviatory effect of nitric oxide (50 µM) and sulphur (S, 1 mM K2SO4) were studied in Vigna radiata. Drought stress reduced plant height, dry weight, total chlorophylls, carotenoids and the content of nitrogen, phosphorous, potassium and sulphur. The foliar applications of NO and sulphur each individually alleviated the decline, with a greater alleviation observed in seedlings treated with both NO and sulphur. The reduction in intermediates of chlorophyll synthesis pathways and photosynthesis were alleviated by NO and sulphur. Oxidative stress was evident through the increased hydrogen peroxide, superoxide and activity of lipoxygenase and protease which were significantly assuaged by NO, sulphur and NO + sulphur treatments. A reduction in the activity of nitrate reductase, glutamine synthetase and glutamate synthase was mitigated due to the application of NO and the supplementation of sulphur. The endogenous concentration of NO and hydrogen sulphide (HS) was increased due to PEG; however, the PEG-induced increase in NO and HS was lowered due to NO and sulphur. Furthermore, NO and sulphur treatments to PEG-stressed seedlings further enhanced the functioning of the antioxidant system, osmolytes and secondary metabolite accumulation. Activities of γ-glutamyl kinase and phenylalanine ammonia lyase were up-regulated due to NO and S treatments. The treatment of NO and S regulated the expression of the Cu/ZnSOD, POD, CAT, RLP, HSP70 and LEA genes significantly under normal and drought stress. The present study advocates for the beneficial use of NO and sulphur in the mitigation of drought-induced alterations in the metabolism of Vigna radiata.

Abstract
In many crops species, sulfur (S) deprivation negatively affects growth, seed yield quality and plant health. Furthermore, silicon (Si) is known to alleviate many nutritional stresses but the effects of Si supply on plants subjected to S deficiency remain unclear and poorly documented. The objective of this study was to evaluate whether Si supply would alleviate the negative effects of S deprivation on root nodulation and atmospheric dinitrogen (N2) fixation capacity in Trifolium incarnatum subjected (or not) to long-term S deficiency. For this, plants were grown for 63 days in hydroponic conditions with (500 µM) or without S and supplied (1.7 mM) or not with Si. The effects of Si on growth, root nodulation and N2 fixation and nitrogenase abundance in nodules have been measured. The most important beneficial effect of Si was observed after 63 days. Indeed, at this harvest time, a Si supply increased growth, the nitrogenase abundance in nodules and N2 fixation in S-fed and S-deprived plants while a beneficial effect on the number and total biomass of nodules was only observed in S-deprived plants. This study shows clearly for the first time that a Si supply alleviates negative effects of S deprivation in Trifolium incarnatum.

Abstract
To improve the yield and quality of wheat is of great importance for food security worldwide. One of the most effective and significant approaches to achieve this goal is to enhance the nitrogen use efficiency (NUE) in wheat. In this review, a comprehensive understanding of the factors involved in the process of the wheat nitrogen uptake, assimilation and remobilization of nitrogen in wheat were introduced. An appropriate definition of NUE is vital prior to its precise evaluation for the following gene identification and breeding process. Apart from grain yield (GY) and grain protein content (GPC), the commonly recognized major indicators of NUE, grain protein deviation (GPD) could also be considered as a potential trait for NUE evaluation. As a complex quantitative trait, NUE is affected by transporter proteins, kinases, transcription factors (TFs) and micro RNAs (miRNAs), which participate in the nitrogen uptake process, as well as key enzymes, circadian regulators, cross-talks between carbon metabolism, which are associated with nitrogen assimilation and remobilization. A series of quantitative genetic loci (QTLs) and linking markers were compiled in the hope to help discover more efficient and useful genetic resources for breeding program. For future NUE improvement, an exploration for other criteria during selection process that incorporates morphological, physiological and biochemical traits is needed. Applying new technologies from phenomics will allow high-throughput NUE phenotyping and accelerate the breeding process. A combination of multi-omics techniques and the previously verified QTLs and molecular markers will facilitate the NUE QTL-mapping and novel gene identification.

Abstract
Uncoupling chemical looping gasification (CLG), the organic sulfur evolution was simulated and explored qualitatively and quantitatively using typical sulfur compounds on TG-MS and temperature-programmed fixed bed. The HS radical in the reductive atmosphere easier converted to H2S and COS. H2O activated the evolution of S which was stably bonded to carbon, and H2 generated from gasification and oxidation of reductive Fe by H2O contributed to the release of sulfur. The proportion of H2S released from sulfur compounds was greater than 87% in steam gasification, and more than 60% during CLG. Oxygen carriers promoted the conversion of sulfur to SO2 in the mid-temperature region (500 °C-700 °C), and H2S in the high temperature region (700 °C-900 °C). Sulfur species played a pivotal role in sulfur evolution at low temperature of CLG. The organic sulfur in mercaptan and benzyl were more easily converted and escaped than in thiophene and phenyl. The thermal stability of sulfur species, the presence of steam and OC affected the initial temperature and peak concentration of gas sulfur release as well as sulfur distribution. Consequently, CLG strengthened the sulfur evolution, and made it possible to targeted restructure the distribution of sulfur by regulating process parameters, or blending fuel with different sulfur species for emission reduction, and selective conversion of sulfur.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to test the significant effects of inorganic sulfur and cysteine on grain protein and flour quality in wheat and to provide a theoretical basis of wheat cultivation techniques with high yield and quality. In the field experiment, a winter wheat cultivar, Yangmai 16, was used, and five treatments were established, i.e., S0 (no sulfur fertilizer application during the whole wheat growth period), S(B)60 (60 kg ha-1 inorganic sulfur fertilizer was applied as the basal fertilizer), Cys(B)60 (60 kg ha-1 cysteine sulfur fertilizer was applied as the basal fertilizer), S(J)60 (60 kg ha-1 inorganic sulfur fertilizer was applied as the jointing fertilizer), and Cys(J)60 (60 kg ha-1 cysteine sulfur fertilizer was applied as the jointing fertilizer). The fertilizer application at jointing stage showed a better influence than basal fertilizer application on protein quality; for the content of albumin, gliadin, and high molecular weight glutenin (HMW-GS), Cys(J)60 was the best among these treatments. An increase of 7.9%, 24.4%, 43.5%, 22.7% and 36.4% was found in grain yield, glutenin content, glutenin macro-polymer (GMP), low molecular weight glutenin (LMW-GS), and S content under Cys(J)60, in relation to the control, respectively. A similar trend was found in the end-use quality, as exemplified by an increase of 38.6%, 10.9%, 60.5%, and 109.8% in wet gluten content, dry gluten content, sedimentation volume, and bread-specific volume, respectively; a decrease of 69.3% and 69.1% in bread hardness and bread chewiness was found under Cys(J)60. In terms of application period, topdressing at jointing stage is compared with base fertilizer, the sulfur fertilizer application at jointing stage showed larger effects on grain protein and flour quality, from the different types of sulfur fertilizer, the application of cysteine performed better than the use of inorganic sulfur. The Cys(J)60 exhibited the best effects on protein and flour quality. It was suggested that sufficient sulfur application at jointing stage has the potential to enhance the grain protein and flour quality.

Abstract
Sulfur fertilizers play an important role in increasing the yield and improving the dough quality of bread wheat, but their regulatory mechanism remains unclear. In this study, 0 kg·ha-1 (S0) and 60 kg·ha-1 (S60) of sulfur were applied on the anthesis date; subsequently, immature wheat grains at 8, 13, and 18 days post-anthesis (DPA) were subjected to integrated transcriptomic and metabolomic analyses to investigate the changes in the gene/metabolite activity in a typical strong-gluten wheat, Gaoyou2018 (GY2018). Our data show that the S60 treatment could significantly increase the grain yield and grain protein content by 13.2 and 3.6%, respectively. The transcriptomic analysis revealed that 10,694 differentially expressed genes (DEGs) were induced by S60 from 8 to 18 DPA when compared with their corresponding no-sulfur controls, and most DEGs were mainly involved in lipid metabolism and amino acid metabolism pathways. Ninety-seven MYB transcription factors (TFs) were identified as responsive to the S60 treatment; of these, 66 showed significantly differential expression at 13 DPA, and MYB118 might participate in the process of sulfur metabolism by regulating glucosinolate synthesis. In total, 542 significantly enriched differentially expressed (DE) metabolites (DEMs) were identified following the S60 treatment, which mainly included secondary metabolites, carbohydrates, and amino acids. Several metabolites (e.g., glutathione, sucrose, GDP-alpha-D-glucose, and amino acids) exhibited altered abundances following the S60 treatment. The combination of transcriptomic and metabolomic analyses highlighted the important role of amino acid metabolism (especially cysteine, methionine, and glutathione metabolism) and starch and sucrose metabolism pathways after S60 application. Our results provide valuable information enhancing our understanding of the molecular mechanism of the response to sulfur and provide useful clues for grain protein quality formation and yield improvement in bread wheat.

Abstract
TaATLa1 was identified to respond to nitrogen deprivation through transcriptome analysis of wheat seedlings. TaATLa1 specifically transports Gln, Glu, and Asp, and affects the biomass of Arabidopsis and wheat. Nitrogen is an essential macronutrient and plays a crucial role in wheat production. Amino acids, the major form of organic nitrogen, are remobilized by amino acid transporters (AATs) in plants. AATs are commonly described as central components of essential developmental processes and yield formation via taking up and transporting amino acids in plants. However, few studies have reported the detailed biochemical properties and biological functions of these AATs in wheat. In this study, key genes encoding AATs were screened from transcriptome analysis of wheat seedlings treated with normal nitrogen (NN) and nitrogen deprivation (ND). Among them, 21 AATs were down-regulated and eight AATs were up-regulated under ND treatment. Among the homoeologs, TaATLa1.1-3A, TaATLa1.1-3B, and TaATLa1.1-3D (TaATLa1.1-3A, -3B, and -3D), belonging to amino acid transporter-like a (ATLa) subfamily, were significantly down-regulated in response to ND in wheat, and accordingly were selected for functional analyses. The results demonstrated that TaATLa1.1-3A, -3B, and -3D effectively transported glutamine (Gln), glutamate (Glu), and aspartate (Asp) in yeast. Overexpression of TaAILa1.1-3A, -3B, and -3D in Arabidopsis thaliana L. significantly increased amino acid content in leaves, storage protein content in seeds and the plant biomass under NN. Knockdown of TaATLa1.1-3A, -3B, and -3D in wheat seedlings resulted in a significant block of amino acid remobilization and growth inhibition. Taken together, TaATLa1.1-3A, -3B, and -3D contribute substantially to Arabidopsis and wheat growth. We propose that TaATLa1.1-3A, -3B, and -3D may participate in the source-sink translocation of amino acid, and they may have profound implications for wheat yield improvement.

Abstract
KEY MESSAGE Glutamine synthetase TaGSr-4B is a candidate gene for a QTL of thousand grain weight on 4B, and the gene marker is ready for wheat breeding. A QTL for thousand grain weight (TGW) in wheat was previously mapped on chromosome 4B in a DH population of Westonia × Kauz. For identifying the candidate genes of the QTL, wheat 90 K SNP array was used to saturate the existing linkage map, and four field trials plus one glasshouse experiment over five locations were conducted to refine the QTL. Three nitrogen levels were applied to two of those field trials, resulting in a TGW phenotype data set from nine environments. A robust TGW QTL cluster including 773 genes was detected in six environments with the highest LOD value of 13.4. Based on differentiate gene expression within the QTL cluster in an RNAseq data of Westonia and Kauz during grain filling, a glutamine synthesis gene (GS: TaGSr-4B) was selected as a potential candidate gene for the QTL. A SNP on the promoter region between Westonia and Kauz was used to develop a cleaved amplified polymorphic marker for TaGSr-4B gene mapping and QTL reanalysing. As results, TGW QTL appeared in seven environments, and in four out of seven environments, the TGW QTL were localized on the TaGSr-4B locus and showed significant contributions to the phenotype. Based on the marker, two allele groups of Westonia and Kauz formed showed significant differences on TGW in eight environments. In agreement with the roles of GS genes on nitrogen and carbon remobilizations, TaGSr-4B is likely the candidate gene of the TGW QTL on 4B and the TaGSr-4B gene marker is ready for wheat breeding.

Gliadin is a group of grain storage proteins that confers extensibility/viscosity to the dough and are vital to end-use quality in wheat. Moreover, gliadins are one of the important components for nutritional quality because they contain the nutritional unprofitable epitopes that cause chronic immune-mediated intestinal disorder in genetically susceptible individuals designated celiac disease (CD). The main genetic loci encoding the gliadins were revealed by previous studies; however, the genes related to the content of gliadins and their fractions were less elucidated. To illustrate the genetic basis of the content of gliadins and their fractions comprehensively, a recombinant inbred line (RIL) population that consisted of 196 lines was constructed from the two parents, Luozhen No.1 and Zhengyumai 9987. Quantitative trait loci (QTL) controlling the content of total gliadins and their fractions (ω-, α-, and γ-gliadin) were screened genome-widely under four environments across 2 years. Totally, thirty QTL which explained 1.97-12.83% of the phenotypic variation were detected to be distributed on 17 chromosomes and they were gathered into 12 clusters. One hundred and one pairs of epistatic QTL (E-QTL) were revealed, among which five were involved with the total gliadins and its fractions content QTL located on chromosome 1AS, 1DS, 4DS, 1DL, and 6AS. Three Kompetitive Allele-Specific PCR (KASP) markers were developed from three major QTL clusters located on chromosomes 6A, 6D, and 7D, respectively. The present research not only dissects the genetic loci for improving the content of gliadins and their three fractions, but may also contribute to marker-assisted selection of varieties with appropriate gliadin fractions content for end-use quality and health benefit at the early developmental stages and early breeding generations.

Abstract
Remote sensing is an efficient method of monitoring experiments rapidly and by enabling the collection of significantly more detailed data, than using only field measurements, ensuring new possibilities in scientific research. A small plot field experiment was conducted in a randomized block design with winter oat (Avena sativa L.) varieties in Debrecen, Hungary in the 2020/2021 cropping year. Multiple field measurements and aerial surveys were carried out examining the response of oat on Silicon and Sulfur foliar fertilization treatments thereby monitoring their effects on the physiology, production and stress tolerance. Parallel application of in situ (elevation, soil pH, NDVI, SPAD, chlorophyll content) and aerial (NDVI, NDRE) surveys including unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) provided a diverse source of data for evaluation. Both the oat varieties (88.9%) and the foliar fertilization treatments (87.5%) were correctly classified and clearly separated with the discriminant analysis based on measured data. The Pearson correlation analysis showed a very strong positive connection (r = 0.895–1.00) between the NDVI values measured using a hand-held system and UAV-installed camera, except the third measurement time, where the correlation was weaker (r = 0.70). Our results indicate that field experiments can be effectively supported by UAVs.

Abstract
Elucidation of the composition, functional characteristics, and formation mechanism of wheat quality is critical for the sustainable development of wheat industry. It is well documented that wheat processing quality is largely determined by its seed storage proteins including glutenins and gliadins, which confer wheat dough with unique rheological properties, making it possible to produce a series of foods for human consumption. The proportion of different gluten components has become an important target for wheat quality improvement. In many cases, the processing quality of wheat is closely associated with the nutritional value and healthy effect of the end-products. The components of wheat seed storage proteins can greatly influence wheat quality and some can even cause intestinal inflammatory diseases or allergy in humans. Genetic and environmental factors have great impacts on seed storage protein synthesis and accumulation, and fertilization and irrigation strategies also greatly affect the seed storage protein content and composition, which together determine the final end-use quality of wheat. This review summarizes the recent progress in research on the composition, function, biosynthesis, and regulatory mechanism of wheat storage proteins and their impacts on wheat end-product quality.

Using Waste Sulfur from Biogas Production in Combination with Nitrogen Fertilization of Maize ( Zea mays L.) by Foliar Application. PLANTS 2021; 10:plants10102188. Abstract
In Europe, mainly due to industrial desulfurization, the supply of soil sulfur (S), an essential nutrient for crops, has been declining. One of the currently promoted sources of renewable energy is biogas production, which produces S as a waste product. In order to confirm the effect of the foliar application of waste elemental S in combination with liquid urea ammonium nitrate (UAN) fertilizer, a vegetation experiment was conducted with maize as the main crop grown for biogas production. The following treatments were included in the experiment: 1. Control (no fertilization), 2. UAN, 3. UANS1 (N:S ratio, 2:1), 4. UANS2 (1:1), 5. UANS3 (1:2). The application of UAN increased the N content in the plant and significantly affected the chlorophyll content (N-tester value). Despite the lower increase in nitrogen (N) content and uptake by the plant due to the application of UANS, these combinations had a significant effect on the quantum yield of PSII. The application of UANS significantly increased the S content of the plant. The increase in the weight of plants found on the treatment fertilized with UANS can be explained by the synergistic relationship between N and S, which contributed to the increase in crop nitrogen use efficiency. This study suggests that the foliar application of waste elemental S in combination with UAN at a 1:1 ratio could be an effective way to optimize the nutritional status of maize while reducing mineral fertilizer consumption.
