Abstract
BACKGROUND Root resorption consists of complex, multistep processes that involve cell signalling caused by inflammation and stromal cells, which promotes the secretion of receptor activator of nuclear factor κB ligand/ macrophage-colony stimulating factor (RANKL/M-CSF) resulting in a resorptive process. OBJECTIVE The aim of this narrative review was to analyse the literature related to root resorption resulting from microbial infection and to comparing it with non-microbial infection. METHODS An electronic literature search was performed using the PubMed database and applying keywords of articles published in English. Eligible papers were reviewed to reveal the descriptions of bone and root resorption processes. The abstracts were searched manually to identify articles about infection-stimulating bone and root resorption. RESULTS Three main types of root resorption were identified, two associated with primary bacterial infection and one secondary to bacterial infection. These include external inflammatory resorption, internal inflammatory resorption and external cervical (invasive) resorption. DISCUSSION The magnitude of cytokine involvement that promotes resorption and M-CSF/RANKL production depends on multiple factors, including pathogen virulence, site of infection and host genetic factors that activate the inflammation at the infection site. Two mechanisms activate the resorption mechanisms-the canonical and non-canonical pathways that can activate clastic cells independently of the RANKL/RANK canonical pathways. CONCLUSIONS Two pathways of root resorption co-exist in the body. When resorption is caused by infection, chronic inflammation due to bacterial infection prolongs the secretions of pro-inflammatory cytokines that intensify root and bone resorption. The second pathway is bacterial independent of the non-infection root resorption that is part of the wound healing process, which is limited in time due to its innate ability.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Canine-induced root resorption (CIRR) is caused by impacted canines and CBCT images have shown to be more accurate in diagnosing CIRR than panoramic and periapical radiographs with the reported AUCs being 0.95, 0.49, and 0.57, respectively. The aim of this study was to use deep learning to automatically evaluate the diagnosis of CIRR in maxillary incisors using CBCT images. METHODS A total of 50 cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) images and 176 incisors were selected for the present study. The maxillary incisors were manually segmented and labeled from the CBCT images by two independent radiologists as either healthy or affected by root resorption induced by the impacted canines. We used five different strategies for training the model: (A) classification using 3D ResNet50 (Baseline), (B) classification of the segmented masks using the outcome of a 3D U-Net pretrained on the 3D MNIST, (C) training a 3D U-Net for the segmentation task and use its outputs for classification, (D) pretraining a 3D U-Net for the segmentation and transfer of the model, and (E) pretraining a 3D U-Net for the segmentation and fine-tuning the model with only the model encoder. The segmentation models were evaluated using the mean intersection over union (mIoU) and Dice coefficient (DSC). The classification models were evaluated in terms of classification accuracy, precision, recall, and F1 score. RESULTS The segmentation model achieved a mean intersection over union (mIoU) of 0.641 and a DSC of 0.901, indicating good performance in segmenting the tooth structures from the CBCT images. For the main classification task of detecting CIRR, Model C (classification of the segmented masks using 3D ResNet) and Model E (pretraining on segmentation followed by fine-tuning for classification) performed the best, both achieving 82% classification accuracy and 0.62 F1-scores on the test set. These results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed hierarchical, data-efficient deep learning approaches in improving the accuracy of automated CIRR diagnosis from limited CBCT data compared to the 3D ResNet baseline model. CONCLUSION The proposed approaches are effective at improving the accuracy of classification tasks and are helpful when the diagnosis is based on the volume and boundaries of an object. While the study demonstrated promising results, future studies with larger sample size are required to validate the effectiveness of the proposed method in enhancing the medical image classification tasks.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION External root resorption following avulsion injury is a complex process wherein differentiation of macrophages (Mϕ) to multinucleated osteoclasts is temporally regulated by resident periodontal fibroblasts (PDLF). The current study aims to assess the effect of engineered bioactive chitosan nanoparticles (CSNP), sustained released dexamethasone conjugated CSNP (CS-DEX) and CSNP functionalized with photosensitizer Rose Bengal (CSRB) for application in root resorption using an in-vitro PDLF-Mϕ direct coculture model and in-vivo delayed reimplantation model. METHODS PDLF-Mϕ direct coculture system was exposed to lipopolysaccharide (LPS), macrophage colony stimulating factor, receptor activator of nuclear factor kappa β ligand with or without CSNP/CS-DEX for 7 days. Clastic differentiation was assessed by tartrate resistant acid phosphatase (TRAP) staining on day 7. On day 2 and 7, immunofluorescence analysis was conducted to assess the expression of Mϕ polarization markers (CD80, CD206), multinucleation markers (NFATc1, STAT6) in Mϕ and matricellular protein periostin in PDLF and cytokine profiling in cell culture supernatants. Delayed replantation model with extraoral air dry/LPS exposure for 1h followed by root surface treatment with CS-DEX/CSRB was used in Wistar rats. After 21 days, rats were euthanized for histologic and immunofluorescence analysis. Statistical analysis one-way ANOVA with Tukey's multiple comparisons was used to analyze the data (P < .05). RESULTS CS-DEX significantly reduced TRAP+ multinucleated cells and CSNP treatment showed no TRAP+ cells. Immunofluorescence analysis showed that CSNP/CS-DEX reduced CD80, NFATc1 and STAT6 expression and increased periostin as expressed by fluorescence intensity. CSNP/CS-DEX significantly reduced TNFα, MMP9 and increased IL10, TGFβ1. Osteoprotegerin was upregulated only by CSNP. Root surface treatment in delayed replantation model showed that CS-DEX and CSRB substantially reduced the degree of resorption and ankylosis. Further, CD80, CD206, and MMP2 expression in groups with root surface treatment with CS-DEX and CSRB was lower than airdry/LPS group and similar to healthy control and NFATc1, STAT6, and MMP9 expressions were lower than healthy control. CONCLUSION The engineered nanosized immunomodulatory bioactive materials chitosan nanoparticles functionalized with photosensitizer and dexamethasone effectively reduced the clastic differentiation of Mϕ in in-vitro coculture and minimized the resorption and ankylosis in a delayed reimplantation model. These biomaterials have the potential to serve as root modification agents, promoting favorable healing outcomes in cases of dental avulsion.

Abstract
Dental trauma is one of the most common injuries encountered in the younger population. This can have a long-term impact on the patient's overall quality of life as they may have to deal with the sequelae of these injuries for years to come. Young boys experience dental trauma more frequently than young girls and one of the most common outcomes of these injuries are fractured teeth. This first paper in a two-part review series aims to provide an overview of dental trauma followed by a discussion on management of fractured teeth, associated pulpal complications and resorption. These can be uncomplicated fractures involving enamel and/or dentine, or complicated fractures involving enamel, dentine and pulp. They can involve the crown, the crown and root together, or present solely as root fractures. Pulpal complications can lead to pulp necrosis or pulp canal obliteration. Resorption can be internal or external, inflammatory, or replacement type. The management of each of these injuries begins with a thorough assessment followed by initiating emergency treatment to stabilise the presenting condition. This is followed by a long-term treatment plan which aims to address the patients' aesthetic and functional requirements and provide the patient with the most suitable treatment outcome in the hope to improve their sense of wellbeing and overall quality of life.

Abstract
BACKGROUND/AIM Root resorption occurs for various reasons and can also be seen as a treatment complication in orthodontics. This study aimed to assess the reliability and quality of YouTube™ videos on root resorption and to assess whether the videos referred to orthodontic treatment and other stimulation factors. MATERIALS AND METHODS YouTube was searched using the keyword 'root resorption', which is the most searched term on Google Trends. The first 200 videos identified using the default filter 'sort by relevance' were used. Information such as the source, type, duration, and number of likes were recorded. Videos were analyzed using a 23-point content scale related to root resorption and divided into groups (poor, moderate, and excellent) based on the Global Quality Score. RESULTS A total of 95 videos were included in the study. Most were uploaded by dentists or dental clinics (n = 64, 67.4%). The mean number of days since upload was 1536 ± 1254, and the mean duration was 5 ± 4 min. The videos had a mean of 80 ± 515 likes and 7043 ± 35,382 views, and a mean viewing rate of 1131.71 ± 8736.83. The most discussed topic was radiographic signs of root resorption. While the highest content score for the videos was 21, the average score was only 4. The mean GQS was 2 ± 1. Grouping videos by GQS showed that 55 (57.9%) were poor, 38 (40%) were moderate, and 2 (2.1%) were excellent. There was a significant relationship between videos that mentioned orthodontics (n = 62; 65.3%) and higher GQS (p = .036), and a significant difference was between GQS groups for total content levels (p < .001). CONCLUSIONS YouTube videos related to root resorption lack sufficient information and clarity, and their quality needs to be improved. Oral health professionals should strive to produce higher-quality videos.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION The aim of this study was to evaluate the anti-osteoclastic activity of calcium hydroxide-loaded poly(lactic-co-glycolic acid) nanoparticles [Ca(OH)2-loaded PLGA NPs] in comparison to calcium hydroxide nanoparticles [Ca(OH)2 NPs]. METHODS RAW 264.7 cell lines (third-fifth passage) were cultured and incubated with soluble receptor activator of nuclear factor kappa B ligand in triplicate. Subsequently, Ca(OH)2-loaded PLGA NPs and Ca(OH)2 NPs were added for 7 days to evaluate their effects on receptor activator of nuclear factor kappa B ligand-induced osteoclast differentiation of RAW 264.7 cells by tartrate-resistant acid phosphatase activity. Additionally, a 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide assay was conducted to confirm the cytotoxicity of treatments to cells. RESULTS Tartrate-resistant acid phosphatase staining showed a significant reduction in the osteoclast number when treated with Ca(OH)2-loaded PLGA NPs compared with Ca(OH)2 NPs (P < .01). In comparison to the control, the number of osteoclasts significantly reduced upon treatment with Ca(OH)2-loaded PLGA NPs (P < .05), but there was no significant difference in Ca(OH)2 NPs. Furthermore, osteoclast morphology in both treatment groups exhibited smaller sizes than the control group. Neither Ca(OH)2-loaded PLGA NPs nor Ca(OH)2 NPs demonstrated cytotoxic effects on RAW264.7 cells. CONCLUSIONS Both Ca(OH)2 NPs with and without poly(lactic-co-glycolic acid) have the ability to inhibit osteoclast differentiation. However, Ca(OH)2-loaded PLGA NPs exhibit greater potential than Ca(OH)2 NPs, making them a promising intracanal medicament for cases of root resorption.

Abstract
Context External inflammatory root resorption has rapid onset and progresses aggressively. It leads to cementum loss, which allows communication between the infected pulp and the periodontium through the denuded dentinal tubules. Primary management strategy includes adequate chemomechanical debridement and lesion arrest for which maintaining alkaline pH and aerobic conditions is essential for healing and repair of the resorption defect. Aims The aim of this study is to evaluate rise in pH and oxygen release at the site of simulated external root resorption cavities using different oxygen-releasing biomaterials. Materials and Methods In 40 extracted single-rooted teeth access opening and chemomechanical debridement were done. Cavities simulating resorption defect are prepared on the roots. The samples are divided into four groups (n = 10) based on the biomaterial used. After placing the biomaterial, the root apices were sealed. Half of the samples from each group were tested for oxygen release using dissolved oxygen meter and the other half for rise in pH using pH meter at 7, 14, 21, and 28 days. Statistical Analysis The pH values were analyzed using Friedman 2-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) and Kruskal-Wallis test. Oxygen release was measured using the two-way and repeated-measures ANOVA. Results Calcium peroxide group showed the highest mean pH and oxygen release than other groups at any given point of time. Conclusions Incorporating oxygen-releasing biomaterials such as calcium peroxide and perfluorodecalin into intracanal medicaments, such as calcium hydroxide, creates an alkaline and oxygen-enriched milieu in the periapical tissues.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Pathological root resorption affects permanent teeth and is usually triggered by infectious-inflammatory stimuli and/or dental trauma. Periodontitis and traumatic occlusion have been reported as possible causative factors of root resorptions, whilst the impact of systemic diseases is less well understood. This case highlights the need for consideration of multiple risk factors, especially when presenting in combination. METHODS AND RESULTS A 62-year-old South Asian female presented with unstable Stage IV Grade C periodontitis, poor oral hygiene and multiple autoimmune conditions including oral lichen planus. Clinical and radiographic examination revealed multiple advanced apical and external root resorptions of the patient's molars associated with periapical bone loss, despite of a minimally restored dental status. CONCLUSION A likely etiology of this patient's multiple root resorptions is the presence of unstable periodontitis with periodontal-endodontic lesions, exacerbated by a dysbalanced immune response to infectious agents. Appropriate monitoring and managing of such patients can prevent or limit the pathological process of inflammatory root resorption. KEY POINTS Why is this case new information? This is the first report documenting advanced multiple external inflammatory root resorptions in a periodontitis patient with oral and systemic co-morbidities. What are the keys to successful management of this case? Early diagnosis, prevention and intervention to limit periodontal inflammation, endodontic infection and occlusal trauma. What are the primary limitations to success in this case? Late diagnosis of multiple root resorptions, palliative periodontal treatment due to poor oral hygiene compliance, and poorly controlled systemic inflammation favoring the persistence of a dysregulated immune response to the oral microbiota.

Abstract
The current literature on multiple idiopathic cervical root resorption (MICRR), a rare and aggressive form of external root resorption, is limited to case reports and series. Therefore, we performed a systematic review of this condition. A comprehensive search of PubMed, Embase, Web of science, Cochrane Library, CNKI, and WANFANG was conducted using key terms relevant to MICRR, supplemented by a grey literature search. Risk of bias was assessed using Cochrane's and Joanna Briggs Institute's tools. A total of 36 studies with 47 cases were included. MICRR is more common among younger females and may be related to hormonal changes and denosumab use. Initially, the premolars are usually affected but all permanent teeth may eventually be involved. Cone-beam computed tomography is recommended for diagnosis and assessment of resorptive lesions. The management is focused on complete removal and restoration of the resorptive tissue to maintain the tooth's structural integrity. However, MICRR usually has a poor prognosis. Due to its invasive and aggressive behavior, MICRR requires greater attention.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION In a growing child, preservation of traumatized immature permanent upper incisors is challenging. This study aimed to evaluate the long-term outcome of endodontically treated traumatized immature upper incisors and associated variables. METHODS A total of 183 traumatized immature upper incisors treated with pulpotomy, apexification, or regenerative endodontic procedure (REP), with follow-up between 4 and 15 years, were assessed for presence of pulpal responses or periodontal/bone responses using standardized clinical and radiologic criteria. Logistic regression, including stage of root development, type and complexity of traumatic event, type of endodontic intervention, and history of orthodontic management, were used to estimate impact on tooth survival and occurrence of tissue responses. Study approved by Ethics Committee Research UZ/KU Leuven (S60597). RESULTS After a median follow-up of 7.3 years (interquartile range, 6.1-9.2), 159 teeth (86.9%) were still functional. From these teeth, 58 (36.5%) developed tissue responses. This was significantly associated with stage of root development at moment of trauma (root length <¾) and type of endodontic intervention (REP presenting worst outcome). Tooth loss (24 teeth, 13.1%) occurred after a mean time span of 3.2 years (±1.5) and was significantly associated with type and complexity of the traumatic event and type of endodontic intervention, with apexification showing better results than REP (odds ratio, 0.30; 95% confidence interval, 0.11-0.79). CONCLUSIONS A large number of endodontically treated traumatized immature teeth could be kept functional. Very immature teeth, teeth with periodontal tissue damage, and teeth treated with REP were at highest risk for an unfavorable outcome.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To compare the performance of the Malmgren index on 2D and 3D radiographs. METHODS Patients with a panoramic radiograph and a cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) taken at an interval of <3 months and presenting root resorption (RR) on at least one incisor and/or canine were retrospectively included. RR was scored twice by two observers using the Malmgren index in both the 2D and 3D sets, and intra-class correlation coefficient (ICC) was calculated. RESULTS 155 teeth were analyzed. The ICC was the lowest in 2D, followed by overall, transversal and sagittal 3D. Malmgren scores were systematically higher in 2D, which overestimated RR, especially in the transversal plane on all incisors and canines and in the sagittal plane on the maxillary incisors. 2D respectively leads to 28.0-34.8% of false positives and negatives when discriminating between RR or not. The early stages of RR are often misdiagnosed in 2D, while later stages are more accurate. CONCLUSIONS The original Malmgren index is not suited for 3D images, especially axial, where using dichotomized values (resorption yes/no) leads to overestimation of RR. A low-dose CBCT of the upper incisors could detect RR with high diagnostic accuracy in the early stages of orthodontic treatment, especially in patients with dental trauma or familial RR history.

Abstract
AIM Scleroderma, or systemic sclerosis, is a multisystem autoimmune disorder characterized by hardening and fibrosis of the skin. To date, only a small number of case reports have established a relationship between scleroderma and external cervical resorption (ECR). The aim of this case report is to document the case of a patient with multiple external cervical resorption lesions, who was referred to our unit. SUMMARY A 54-year-old female patient, with a 10-year history of systemic sclerosis diagnosed by her rheumatologist, was referred to our unit regarding extensive ECR. A total of 14 maxillary and mandibular teeth with ECR were detected by clinical examination and cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT). The characteristic vascularity of resorptive defects with profuse bleeding upon probing was not evident. The patient declined any active treatment owing to the desire to avoid lengthy and unpredictable treatment, which may hasten the loss of her teeth. CONCLUSIONS General practitioners should be aware of the relationship between connective tissue disorders and ECR. Although not well established in the literature, the vascular changes implicated in scleroderma may stimulate the odontoclastic processes involved in ECR.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Proper skills in radiographic diagnosis are essential for optimal management of dental trauma. AIM To assess diagnostic accuracy obtained by paediatric dentists using Cone Beam Computed Tomography (CBCT) without specific training and to compare this with their performance using intraoral radiographs. METHODS Intraoral and CBCT images of 89 teeth, spread over twenty dental trauma cases were presented in random order to nine paediatric dentists. Diagnostic findings were compared with those of a benchmark reference. Sensitivity and specificity were calculated and compared using paired t-tests. RESULTS Overall, observers' diagnostic performance was rather poor with significantly higher sensitivity when using 2D images (P = 0.017). Performance differed considerably according to the type of pathology. Using either imaging modality, sensitivity for diagnosing apical pathology and root fractures was high while the opposite was seen for inflammatory root resorption, root cracks and subluxations. Statistically significant differences between imaging modalities were seen for root fractures (P = 0.013) and apical pathology (P = 0.001), in favor of 3D, and for crown fractures (P = 0.009) in favor of 2D. CONCLUSION Overall poor performance of paediatric dentists indicates that additional training in radiographic diagnosis is required. In order to justify the use of CBCT to increase diagnostic performance, proper training of the paediatric dentist is mandatory.

Abstract
One possible consequence of dentoalveolar trauma is the development of external inflammatory root resorption (EIRR), which represents an anatomic and microbiologic challenge for clinicians. This case report describes different strategies implemented for successful endodontic management of teeth with multiple EIRR lesions, highlighting the orthograde root canal filling using a tricalcium silicate-based material (Biodentine, Septodont, Saint-Maur-des-Fossés, France). A 17-year-old female patient presented with severe pain in the anterior maxillary teeth and a history of trauma. Two- and three-dimensional radiographic exams confirmed EIRR in three teeth, with a total of 11 EIRR lesions, three exhibiting communication with the root canal. Therefore, chemo-mechanical preparation complemented by ultrasonic activation of irrigants and some changes of intra-canal dressing with calcium hydroxide were performed to reduce the microbiologic load of the affected teeth as much as possible. Then, the canals were entirely filled with Biodentine to interrupt the root resorption process and strengthen the remaining root structure. A 60-month follow-up showed the disappearance of bone rarefactions and the complete repair of the 11 EIRR lesions. The favorable long-term response indicates the feasibility of using tricalcium silicate-based putty as part of orthograde endodontic treatment of teeth with EIRR and root perforations.

Abstract
Orthodontic tooth movement (OTM) is a tissue remodeling process based on orthodontic force loading. Compressed periodontal tissues have a complicated aseptic inflammatory cascade, which are considered the initial factor of alveolar bone remodeling. Since skeletal and immune systems shared a wide variety of molecules, osteoimmunology has been generally accepted as an interdisciplinary field to investigate their interactions. Unsurprisingly, OTM is considered a good mirror of osteoimmunology since it involves immune reaction and bone remolding. In fact, besides bone remodeling, OTM involves cementum resorption, soft tissue remodeling, orthodontic pain, and relapse, all correlated with immune cells and/or immunologically active substance. The aim of this paper is to review the interaction of immune system with orthodontic tooth movement, which helps gain insights into mechanisms of OTM and search novel method to short treatment period and control complications.

Abstract
Root resorption is the loss of dental hard tissue because of odontoclastic action. In permanent teeth, it is undesirable and pathological in nature. Root resorption may occur on the inner aspect of the root canal (internal root resorption) or on the outer aspect of the root (external root resorption). Regardless of its location, root resorption is irreversible, and may result in discomfort for the patient, requires management and/or, in some cases, results in the premature loss of the affected tooth. Root resorption is often challenging to accurately diagnose and manage. The aim of this narrative review is to present the relevant literature on the aetiology, pathogenesis, diagnosis and management, as well as discuss the future directions of diagnosis and management of root resorption.

Abstract
Simple Summary Incisor diseases are a common problem in equine medicine. However, Equine Odontoclastic Tooth Resorption and Hypercementosis (EOTRH) and other lesions are often only diagnosed in advanced stages. In this study, the incisors of 20 horses were examined. The findings of X-rays, macroscopical inspection, and micro-computed tomography (µCT) were compared. Five categories from healthy to severely affected teeth were formed and selected teeth from each category were additionally examined by means of histology. Odontoclastic resorption of dental hard substances, infiltration of inflammatory cells, areas of irregular dental cementum, and formation of granulation tissue were observed. Resorptive lesions previously detected by µCT were confirmed by microscopical imaging, however, not all resorptive lesions were regarded as a pathological condition like EOTRH. Detailed microscopical inspection revealed the presence of so-called surface resorptions which represent repaired resorptive lesions without any pathological consequence for the horse. Nevertheless, some incisors which appeared healthy on the X-rays featured histological findings related to EOTRH. Therefore, the detection of early incisor lesions in equine medicine remains challenging. Histologically, odontoclastic resorptive lesions, leukocytic infiltrations, and areas of irregular cementum and granulation tissue were observed. The extent and severity of histological findings were correlated to the µCT data. Micro-CT imaging was suitable to detect subtle irregularities in the dental substances which were referred to as resorptive lesions. Although histological examinations confirmed the presence of resorptive lesions, not all of them were classified as pathological conditions. Instead, repaired surface lesions were documented which were regarded as a physiological condition. Nevertheless, incisors which were radiographically regarded as healthy can also feature histological signs of EOTRH. Therefore, due to the possibility of misinterpreting radiographic findings combined with superimpositions on intraoral radiographs, the detection of early resorptive lesions remains challenging.

Abstract
Background: Singleton-Merten syndrome type 1 (SGMRT1) is a rare autosomal dominant disorder caused by IFIH1 variations with blood vessel calcifications, teeth anomalies, and bone defects. Aim: We aimed to summarize the oral findings in SGMRT1 through a systematic review of the literature and to describe the phenotype of a 10-year-old patient with SGMRT1 diagnosis. Results: A total of 20 patients were described in the literature, in nine articles. Eight IFIH1 mutations were described in 11 families. Delayed eruption, short roots, and premature loss of permanent teeth were the most described features (100%). Impacted teeth (89%) and carious lesions (67%) were also described. Our patient, a 10-year-old male with Singleton-Merten syndrome, presented numerous carious lesions, severe teeth malposition, especially in the anterior arch, and an oral hygiene deficiency with a 100% plaque index. The panoramic X-ray did not show any dental agenesis but revealed very short roots and a decrease in the jaw alveolar bone height. The whole-genome sequencing analysis revealed a heterozygous de novo variant in IFIH1 (NM_022168.4) c.2465G > A (p.Arg822Gln). Conclusion: Confused descriptions of oral features occurred in the literature between congenital findings and "acquired" pathology, especially carious lesions. The dental phenotype of these patients encompasses eruption anomalies (delayed eruption and impacted teeth) and lack of root edification, leading to premature loss of permanent teeth, and it may contribute to the diagnosis. An early diagnosis is essential to prevent teeth loss and to improve the quality of life of these patients. Abstract
In 1966, Andreasen and Hjørting‐Hansen were the first to describe a relationship between tooth resorption and dental trauma. However, Andreasen's original classification did not include other resorptive processes which have since been identified. Numerous articles have been published suggesting new terminology and definitions for tooth resorption. A uniform language with universally accepted terminology is crucial to eliminate the multiplicity of terms and definitions which only cause confusion within the profession. An electronic literature search was carried out in the PubMed database using the following keywords for articles published in English: “root resorption,” “inflammatory root resorption,” “replacement resorption,” “cervical resorption,” “trauma,” “ankylosis,” “surface resorption,” and “internal resorption.” The search also included textbooks and glossaries that may not have surfaced in the online search. This was done to identify articles related to tooth resorption and its etiology in dentistry. The aim of this review was to present the history that has led to the variety of terms and definitions for resorption. This review emphasizes the need for a clearer, simpler, and more comprehensive nomenclature for the various types of tooth resorption which are presented in Part 2 of this series.

Abstract
Oral diseases are among the most common human diseases yet less studied. These diseases affect both the physical, mental, and social health of the patients resulting in poor quality of life. They affect all ages, although severe stages are mostly observed in older individuals. Poor oral hygiene, genetics, and environmental factors contribute enormously to the development and progression of these diseases. Although there are available treatment options for these diseases, the recurrence of the diseases hinders their efficiency. Oral volatile sulfur compounds (VSCs) are highly produced in oral cavity as a result of bacteria activities. Together with bacteria components such as lipopolysaccharides, VSCs participate in the progression of oral diseases by regulating cellular activities and interfering with the immune response. Hydrogen sulfide (H2S) is a gaseous neurotransmitter primarily produced endogenously and is involved in the regulation of cellular activities. The gas is also among the VSCs produced by oral bacteria. In numerous diseases, H2S have been reported to have dual effects depending on the cell, concentration, and donor used. In oral diseases, high production and subsequent utilization of this gas have been reported. Also, this high production is associated with the progression of oral diseases. In this review, we will discuss the production of H2S in oral cavity, its interaction with cellular activities, and most importantly its role in oral diseases.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES This retrospective observational study aimed to evaluate the diagnostic accuracy of two-dimensional radiographs on canine-induced root resorption (CIRR) in lateral incisors and identify predictors of CIRR in patients with impacted maxillary canines (IMC). METHODS Ninety-nine patients aged 9-17 years, with 156 IMCs, were included in the study. All had CBCT-volumes and two-dimensional radiographs consisting of at least one panoramic radiograph. Two radiologists jointly viewed all cases twice. First, radiographic features related to the IMC and possible CIRR were recorded from two-dimensional radiographs. Then, CIRR was determined from CBCT and according to position and extension classified as mild, moderate and severe. RESULTS CIRRs was detected in 80% of lateral incisors (mild: 45%; moderate: 44%; severe: 11%). The sensitivity was generally low at mild and moderate cut-offs (29 and 29%), and somewhat higher for severe (50%). Corresponding specificities were 48%, 63% and 68%. Canine cusp-tip superimposing the lateral incisor's middle third and root/crown ratio >1 was positively associated with mild CIRR, with an odds ratio (OR) of 3.8 and 6.7, respectively. In addition, the root development stage was positively associated with moderate/severe CIRR when the canine root was nearly or fully developed (OR = 3.1). CONCLUSIONS The diagnostic accuracy of two-dimensional radiographs was inadequate for detecting CIRR amongst patients referred for CBCT examinations. Based on our results, none of the suggested two-dimensional radiographic features could predict moderate/severe CIRR except for root development stage. IMC in a later stage of root development seems to be associated with a higher risk of moderate/severe CIRR.

Abstract
External cervical resorption (ECR) is a relatively unknown and insidious pathology characterized by the loss of hard dental tissues such as: Enamel, cementum and dentine due to clastic function. It begins as a localized resorptive process that initiates on the area of the root beneath the epithelial attachment and the coronal part of the alveolar process, involving vital and non-vital tissues. Despite the fact that there are several potential predisposing factors related to ECR, its aetiology still remains poorly understood and more research is needed to establish the cause-and-effect relationship of all the etiological factors. Improved radiographic detection using cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) is required in order to correctly classify and assess this entity. This provides a three-dimensional insight into the lesion, regarding the location, the size, the depth and the circumferential spread of the ECR defect. It also allows establishment of the most efficacious treatment plan and management. The purpose of this literature review is to cover the relevant literature concerning the etiology, pathogenesis, clinical and radiological presentation and management of ECRs (based on the CBCT findings).

Abstract
The purpose of this case report is to present a case of long-term retention of avulsed upper maxillary incisors with external replacement root resorption in a 15-year-old boy. The avulsed teeth, #11, 21, and 22, were stored under dry conditions for 40 min and replanted. Endodontic treatment was initiated after two weeks, and the nonrigid splint was removed after 3.5 months. A year after replantation of the teeth, replacement root resorption was detected radiographically. For the following 9 years, the resorption progressed slowly, but the teeth were maintained without any adverse effects on esthetic appearance. Under dry storage conditions, replacement root resorption was expected. In this case, the patient was a growing 15-year-old boy; thus, replantation was performed despite a possible poor prognosis. Consequently, root resorption progressed. Nevertheless, maintenance of the tooth crowns led to satisfying results for the patient both esthetically and psychologically. Ankylosis or replacement root resorption is a complication occurring after replantation of avulsed teeth, which could require additional treatment. However, in young patients, replantation could be considered to maintain the teeth until growth is complete.

The aim of this paper is to: (i) Review current literature on the endodontic applications of CBCT; (ii) Based on current evidence make recommendations for the use of CBCT in Endodontics; (iii) Highlight the areas in which more research is required.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Root resorption is a pathological process characterized by loss of dental root substance, caused by bacterial infections, traumatic injuries or chemical irritation. Root resorption might be accidentally observed on digital panoramic radiography. OBJECTIVE The objective of the study was to identify characteristic radiological aspects for the different types of root resorption that could be observed on digital panoramic radiography, to make an easier diagnostic of root resorption. MATERIAL AND METHOD The retrospective study used the X-ray base from the Oral Rehabilitation and Dental Prosthetics Clinic of UMF Craiova to identify the most representative images for different types of root resorption. Digital panoramic radiographies were analysed by two investigators, of which the most suggestive images were selected and described. RESULTS Digital panoramic radiographies and dental charts of 240 patients were analyzed. 113 cases of root resorption were identified. External inflammatory root resorption (EIRR) was present in 27.07% of studied cases, external cervical root resorption (ECRR) was identified in 10.83% of all studied cases, external replacement root resorption (ERRR) was diagnosed in 7.08% of studied cases and internal root resorption (IRR) was the most rare type of root resorption, with only 2.08% from all studied cases. 16 cases were selected to describe the radiologic features of different types of root resorption, featuring the most interesting images of root resorption evident on digital panoramic radiographies. DISCUSSION Comparative analyses have been made between our results and the results of other specific studies, with both similar and different values. The radiological features which lead to the diagnostic of each type of RR were highlighted, assessing the causes that caused the lesions, as well as the treatment recommendations. CONCLUSIONS Digital panoramic radiography is a useful tool to identify root resorption, since it has become the most common radiological investigation for diagnostic in dentistry. Description of radiological aspects of different types of root resorption on panoramic digital radiography allows faster diagnosis. Still, the CBCT may be recommended in some cases to confirm the diagnosis.

Abstract
Root resorption (RR) refers to noninfectious damage related to the loss of hard and soft dental tissue that results from clastic cell activity. It is observed as a pathologic process that is predominantly asymptomatic in the permanent dentition and physiological during the shedding of primary teeth. Roots are protected by unmineralized organic cementoid and predentine. RR occurs because of the inability of the clastic cells to adhere to unmineralized surfaces. Since the first RR classification was described by Andreasen in the 1970s, several classifications have been proposed with diverse terminology. A narrative literature review was undertaken on the current classification, diagnosis, pathophysiology, and treatment of RR. A bibliographic search resulted in 434 titles and abstracts, and from those, 17 articles were obtained that alluded to 15 RR classifications. A total of 28 articles that met the inclusion criteria were included. Results showed that Andreasen’s classification is the most widely used for classifying RR. In terms of epidemiologic data, studies are scarce, although RR pathophysiology is well described in the literature. Overall clinical guidelines are summarized in a new RR classification diagram. The choice of RR treatment application should be in line with the RR type and the dentist’s experience. However, an earlier and correct diagnosis will significantly improve final outcomes and long-term prognosis, especially with the current evolution of advanced imaging techniques, such as cone-beam computed tomography and bioceramic-based endodontic sealers.

Abstract
Ankylosis and external replacement resorption (ERR) are two typical biological responses to delayed replantation of avulsed teeth in cases where adequate root canal treatment is performed. The patient's growth stage affects the progression of root resorption and the long-term outcome of the affected teeth. This case report describes the long-term outcome of an 18.5-year-old patient following an accident in which both of his maxillary central incisors were avulsed and replanted after four hours of non-physiological storage. ERR and ankylosis of teeth 11 and 21 were detected clinically and radiographically during the second year of follow-up. Sixteen years after replantation, replacement resorption was progressing very slowly, enabling functional tooth retention with favorable esthetics. Young adults, with delayed replantation of avulsed teeth, may benefit from tooth retention with slow ERR.

Abstract
External cervical resorption (ECR) is the loss of dental hard tissue as a result of odontoclastic action. It is a dynamic process that involves periodontal, dental and in later stages pulpal tissues. Over the last two decades, ECR has attracted increased interest; this is in part due to novel micro-CT and histopathological techniques for its assessment and also improved radiographic detection using CBCT. This literature review will cover the aetiology, potential predisposing factors, histopathology and diagnosis of ECR. Part 2 will cover the management of ECR.
