Abstract
Background While several methodologies are available to measure adiposity, few have been validated in sub-Saharan African (SSA) and none in postpartum African women living with HIV (WLHIV). We compared bioelectrical impendence analysis (BIA) and air displacement plethysmography (ADP) against dual x-ray absorptiometry (DXA) in South African women and examined differences by HIV and body mass index (BMI) status. Methods Lin's concordance correlation coefficient (CCC) test was used to examine fat mass (FM), fat free mass (FFM), and total body fat percent (%BF) difference between BIA vs. DXA, and ADP vs. DXA in women living with HIV (n = 57) and without HIV (n = 25). The Bland Altman test was used to assess mean differences and the direction of bias. Results The median age was 31 years (IQR, 26-35) and months postpartum were 11 (IQR, 7-16), 44% of the women had obesity. Lin's CCC for BIA and ADP vs. DXA were both 0.80 for %BF and 0.97 for FM, and 0.86 and 0.80 for FFM, respectively. Mean differences (DXA-BIA and ADP estimates) were 0.22 ± 4.54% (p = 0.54) and 3.35 ± 3.27% (p < 0.01) for %BF, -0.82 ± 3.56 kg (p = 0.06) and 1.43 ± 2.68 kg (p = 0.01) for FM, -1.38 ± 3.61 kg (p = 0.01) and - 3.34 ± 2.37 kg (p < 0.01) for FFM, respectively. BIA overestimated %BF in WLHIV and underestimated it in women with obesity. Conclusion Body composition measurements using BIA and ADP correlated well with DXA, thereby providing alternative, safe tools for measuring postpartum FM and FFM in SSA women, including WLHIV.

Abstract
BACKGROUND All definitions for diagnosing sarcopenia include the estimation of muscle mass. This can be made using bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA) or dual x-ray absorptiometry (DXA). BIA is a portable and inexpensive method suitable for clinical settings, while DXA is cumbersome, more expensive and less available. OBJECTIVES To evaluate the interchangeability of both techniques for skeletal muscle mass index (SMI) estimation, and assess whether the two methods are comparable for the diagnosis of sarcopenia. APPROACH Prospective, cross-sectional study. SETTING Faculty for Health Sciences, Universidad de Caldas, Colombia. PARTICIPANTS Seventy-two subjects aged 65-80 years were recruited. MEASUREMENTS BIA and DXA for SMI estimation and sarcopenia diagnoses using the definition of the European Working Group on Sarcopenia in Older People (EWGSOP). Of the 72 patients, 28 were diagnosed with sarcopenia by BIA and corroborated by DXA were included in the study. To establish the agreement between techniques, the intraclass correlation coefficient and the concordance correlation coefficient were calculated. A Bland-Altman plot evaluated the agreement. To evaluate agreement on the diagnosis of sarcopenia, a Cohen's kappa test was performed. MAIN RESULTS Agreement between SMI by BIA and DXA was good according to the intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC 0.7 95% CI 0.5 to 0.8) but poor when the concordance correlation coefficient was used (CCC 0.4 was calculated 95% CI 0.3 to 0.5). The Bland-Altman analysis showed a clinically unacceptable discrepancy between the methods; the confidence intervals were too wide; the difference between methods tends to get larger as the average increases and the scatter around the bias line get larger as the average gets higher. Cohen's kappa test was 0.2 (SEE: 0.1). SIGNIFICANCE The agreement between BIA and DXA was weak. We concluded that, in this studied population, the methods were not interchangeable. Results may improve if a specific formula in a greater sample size is used.

J Strength Cond Res 34(6): 1700-1708, 2020-The aim of our study was to compare the agreement between bioelectrical impedance (BIA) and dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) to track changes on fat-free mass (FFM) after a resistance training (RT) program in older women. Forty-three older women (65.2 ± 4.6 years, 59.5 ± 9.2 kg, 156.4 ± 6.0 cm, 24.3 ± 3.3 kg·m) participated in a RT intervention (12 weeks, 8 exercises, 2 sets, 10-15 repetitions, 3 nonconsecutive days per week). Fat-free mass changes were determined by a single-frequency BIA device (EQ1), 6 BIA prediction equations for older women (EQ2, EQ3, EQ4, EQ5, EQ6, and EQ7), and DXA. At pretraining, 3 equations overpredicted, and 3 underpredicted DXA FFM (F = 244.63, p < 0.001), although all equations had high correlations with DXA (r = 0.78-0.83). After training, 4 equations overpredicted and one underpredicted DXA FFM (F = 176.25, p < 0.001). Dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry detected significant gains in FFM (0.65 ± 0.82 kg; p < 0.05), as did EQ3 (0.55 ± 1.69 kg; p < 0.05), and EQ4 (0.61 ± 1.88 kg; p < 0.05), whereas the remaining equations did not indicate significant changes in FFM. Low correlations between FFM and equation change values suggest that single-frequency BIA-derived equations may not provide sufficient accuracy to track changes in FFM after 12 weeks of RT in older women.

Abstract
BACKGROUND It has been reported that skeletal muscle mass and strength are decreased in patients with heart failure (HF), and HF is associated with both reduced exercise capacity and adverse clinical outcomes. Myostatin has been known as a negative regulator of muscle growth, follistatin as the myostatin antagonist, maintaining tissue homeostasis. We thus determined serum myostatin levels in HF patients and whether they are associated with skeletal muscle wasting. METHODS AND RESULTS Forty one consecutive HF patients (58±15years old, New York Heart Association class I-III) and 30 age-matched healthy subjects as controls (53±8years old) were studied. Serum myostatin levels were significantly lower in HF patients than controls (18.7±7.4 vs. 23.6±5.2ng/mL, P<0.001). Circumference of the thickest part of the right thigh was significantly small (468±72 vs. 559±37mm, P=0.001) and lower extremity muscular strength was lower in patients with HF (129±55 vs. 219±52N×m, P<0.001). Fourteen HF patients (34%) had muscle wasting. By univariate analysis, higher age, higher serum follistatin, and lower serum myostatin were significantly associated with the presence of muscle wasting. By multivariate analysis, serum myostatin levels were independently associated with muscle wasting (OR=0.77, 95% CI [0.58, 0.93], P=0.02). CONCLUSION Serum myostatin levels were significantly decreased in HF patients and associated with lower extremity muscle wasting, suggesting that myostatin may be an important factor for maintaining skeletal muscle mass and strength in HF.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Fat mass (FM) and fat-free mass (FFM) are frequently measured to define body composition phenotypes. The load-capacity model integrates the effects of both FM and FFM to improve disease-risk prediction. We aimed to derive age-, gender- and BMI-specific reference curves of load-capacity model indices in an adult population (≥18 years). DESIGN Cross-sectional study. Dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry was used to measure FM, FFM, appendicular skeletal muscle mass (ASM) and truncal fat mass (TrFM). Two metabolic load-capacity indices were calculated: ratio of FM (kg) to FFM (kg) and ratio of TrFM (kg) to ASM (kg). Age-standardised reference curves, stratified by gender and BMI (<25.0 kg/m2, 25.0-29.9 kg/m2, ≥30.0 kg/m2), were constructed using an LMS approach. Percentiles of the reference curves were 5th, 15th, 25th, 50th, 75th, 85th and 95th. SETTING Secondary analysis of data from the 1999-2004 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES). SUBJECTS The population included 6580 females and 6656 males. RESULTS The unweighted proportions of obesity in males and females were 25.5 % and 34.7 %, respectively. The average values of both FM:FFM and TrFM:ASM were greater in female and obese subjects. Gender and BMI influenced the shape of the association of age with FM:FFM and TrFM:ASM, as a curvilinear relationship was observed in female and obese subjects. Menopause appeared to modify the steepness of the reference curves of both indices. CONCLUSIONS This is a novel risk-stratification approach integrating the effects of high adiposity and low muscle mass which may be particularly useful to identify cases of sarcopenic obesity and improve disease-risk prediction.

Abstract
UNLABELLED This study evaluated the agreement of novel anthropometric equations and established indirect methods (skinfold thickness and bioimpedance analysis) with reference methods [dual X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) and air displacement plethysmography (ADP)] for fat mass assessment (FM) in older subjects. METHODS Forty subjects (M/F = 15/25, age = 61-84 years, BMI = 18-37 kg/m(2)) were recruited. The agreement of the following predictive equations was evaluated: body adiposity index (BAI), BAI-Fels and Clínica Universidad de Navarra-body adiposity estimator (CUN-BAE). RESULTS BAI estimates were comparable to DXA (Δ ± 2SD = 0.4 ± 6.0 kg, p > 0.05) but not to ADP (Δ ± 2SD = -2.8 ± 7.2 kg, p < 0.001); BAI-Fels estimates were comparable to DXA (Δ ± 2SD = 0.8 ± 5.5 kg, p > 0.05) but not to ADP (Δ ± 2SD = -4.0 ± 6.9 kg, p < 0.001). The difference between CUN-BAE and ADP was not significant (Δ ± 2SD = -0.4 ± 5.6 kg, p > 0.05), whereas it significantly overestimated DXA (Δ ± 2SD = 2.8 ± 5.4 kg, p < 0.001). ADP significantly overestimated FM compared to DXA (Δ ± 2SD = 3.2 ± 5.4 kg, p < 0.001) and the measurement bias was significantly correlated with BMI in men (p = 0.004). CONCLUSIONS The accuracy of the three anthropometric indexes is dependent on the choice of the reference method. The variability of the FM estimates was large and these indexes cannot be recommended for the assessment of FM in older subjects.

Abstract
Clinicians and researchers use body composition measurements to identify individuals who may be at risk of adverse health complications. This study compared two commonly used two-compartmental anthropometric models (bioelectrical impedance analysis [BIA] and air displacement plethysmography [ADP]) to determine whether these two cost-effective methods would provide similar fat free mass index (FFMI) values in a mixed and sex-separated sample population of healthy older adults. Community-dwelling older adults ( N = 37, 18 men) aged 74.5 ± 5.2 years participated. FFMIBIA was correlated with FFMIADP ( r = .916); however, these correlations were markedly reduced when the population was split by sex ( r < .60). The level of agreement between the difference values (FFMIBIA – FFMIADP) fluctuated ± 2.1 kg/m2 (illustrated via Bland-Altman plots), but these differences were not statistically different from 0. Findings from the current work suggest that clinicians must be cautious when using portable devices such as BIA to assess FFMI in an older adult population.

Abstract
PURPOSE The purpose of this study was to evaluate the validity and reliability of air displacement plethysmography (ADP) compared to a dual energy x-ray absorptiometry (DXA) criterion for body composition measurement in overweight and obese women (BMI ≥ 25·0 kg m(2) ). SUBJECTS/METHODS Twenty-four overweight and obese women (Mean ± SD; Age: 36·6 ± 12·0 years; Height: 166·4 ± 5·8 cm; Weight: 86·5 ± 14·2 kg; Body Fat: 38·5 ± 3·7%; BMI: 31·3 ± 5·5 kg m(2) ) were tested after an 8-h fast. Fat mass (FM), fat-free mass (FFM) and percent body fat (%BF) were measured by ADP and compared to values determined by the DXA criterion. FFM from DXA was calculated as lean mass plus bone mineral content. A paired samples t-test was used to test for significant differences in the body composition variables between methods. A one-way ANOVA along with intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC), SEM,%SEM and MD was used to represent reliability. RESULTS Validity data comparing ADP and DXA demonstrated no significant difference in FM (ADP-DXA FM = 0·99 kg; P = 0·113), FFM (0·98 kg; P = 0·115) and %BF (1·56%; P = 0·540). Reliability data for ADP between the first and second trials showed no significant difference in FM (P = 0·168; ICC = 0·994; SEM = 0·668), FFM (P = 0·058; ICC = 0·973; SEM = 0·892) or %BF (P = 0·121; ICC = 0·971; SEM = 0·813). CONCLUSIONS For overweight and obese women, ADP was found to be a valid measure of FM, FFM and %BF when compared with DXA. The reliability of ADP was supported for all body composition variables.

Abstract
BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES (1) To cross-validate tetra- (4-BIA) and octopolar (8-BIA) bioelectrical impedance analysis vs dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) for the assessment of total and appendicular body composition and (2) to evaluate the accuracy of external 4-BIA algorithms for the prediction of total body composition, in a representative sample of Swiss children. SUBJECTS/METHODS A representative sample of 333 Swiss children aged 6-13 years from the Kinder-Sportstudie (KISS) (ISRCTN15360785). Whole-body fat-free mass (FFM) and appendicular lean tissue mass were measured with DXA. Body resistance (R) was measured at 50 kHz with 4-BIA and segmental body resistance at 5, 50, 250 and 500 kHz with 8-BIA. The resistance index (RI) was calculated as height(2)/R. Selection of predictors (gender, age, weight, RI4 and RI8) for BIA algorithms was performed using bootstrapped stepwise linear regression on 1000 samples. We calculated 95% confidence intervals (CI) of regression coefficients and measures of model fit using bootstrap analysis. Limits of agreement were used as measures of interchangeability of BIA with DXA. RESULTS 8-BIA was more accurate than 4-BIA for the assessment of FFM (root mean square error (RMSE)=0.90 (95% CI 0.82-0.98) vs 1.12 kg (1.01-1.24); limits of agreement 1.80 to -1.80 kg vs 2.24 to -2.24 kg). 8-BIA also gave accurate estimates of appendicular body composition, with RMSE < or = 0.10 kg for arms and < or = 0.24 kg for legs. All external 4-BIA algorithms performed poorly with substantial negative proportional bias (r> or = 0.48, P<0.001). CONCLUSIONS In a representative sample of young Swiss children (1) 8-BIA was superior to 4-BIA for the prediction of FFM, (2) external 4-BIA algorithms gave biased predictions of FFM and (3) 8-BIA was an accurate predictor of segmental body composition.
