Magnetoelectric effects in Josephson junctions

The review is devoted to the fundamental aspects and characteristic features of the magnetoelectric effects, reported in the literature on Josephson junctions (JJs). The main focus of the review is on the manifestations of the direct and inverse magnetoelectric effects in various types of Josephson systems. They provide a coupling of the magnetization in superconductor/ferromagnet/superconductor JJs to the Josephson current. The direct magnetoelectric effect is a driving force of spin torques acting on the ferromagnet inside the JJ. Therefore it is of key importance for the electrical control of the magnetization. The inverse magnetoelectric effect accounts for the back action of the magnetization dynamics on the Josephson subsystem, in particular, making the JJ to be in the resistive state in the presence of the magnetization dynamics of any origin. The perspectives of the coupling of the magnetization in JJs with ferromagnetic interlayers to the Josephson current via the magnetoelectric effects are discussed.

Analysis of Low-Temperature Magnetotransport Properties of NbN Thin Films Grown by Atomic Layer Deposition

Superconducting niobium nitride (NbN) films with nominal thicknesses of 4 nm, 5 nm, 7 nm, and 9 nm were grown on sapphire substrates using atomic layer deposition (ALD). We observed probed Hall resistance (HR) (Rxy) in external out-of-plane magnetic fields up to 6 T and magnetoresistance (MR) (Rxx) in external in-plane and out-of-plane magnetic fields up to 6 T on NbN thin films in Van der Pauw geometry. We also observed that positive MR dominated. Our study focused on the analysis of interaction and localisation effects on electronic disorder in NbN in the normal state in temperatures that ranged from 50 K down to the superconducting transition temperature. By modelling the temperature and magnetic field dependence of the MR data, we extracted the temperature-dependent Coulomb interaction constants, spin–orbit scattering lengths, localisation lengths, and valley degeneracy factors. The MR model allowed us to distinguish between interaction effects (positive MR) and localisation effects (negative MR) for in-plane and out-of-plane magnetic fields. We showed that anisotropic dephasing scattering due to lattice non-idealities in NbN could be neglected in the ALD-grown NbN thin films.

Dynamic Spin-Triplet Order Induced by Alternating Electric Fields in Superconductor-Ferromagnet-Superconductor Josephson Junctions

Dynamic states offer extended possibilities to control the properties of quantum matter. Recent efforts are focused on studying the ordered states which appear exclusively under the time-dependent drives. Here, we demonstrate a class of systems which feature dynamic spin-triplet superconducting order stimulated by the alternating electric field. The effect is based on the interplay of ferromagnetism, interfacial spin-orbital coupling, and the condensate motion driven by the field, which converts hidden static p-wave order, produced by the joint action of the ferromagnetism and the spin-orbital coupling, into dynamic s-wave equal-spin-triplet correlations. We demonstrate that the critical current of Josephson junctions hosting these states is proportional to the electromagnetic power, supplied either by the external irradiation or by the ac current source. Based on these unusual properties we propose the scheme of a Josephson transistor which can be switched by the ac voltage and demonstrates an even-numbered sequence of Shapiro steps. Combining the photoactive Josephson junctions with recently discovered Josephson phase batteries we find photomagnetic SQUID devices which can generate spontaneous magnetic fields while being exposed to irradiation.

Sub-gap Fano resonances in a topological superconducting wire with on-site Coulomb interactions

We consider theoretically a 1D-semiconducting wire with strong Rashba interaction in proximity withs-wave superconductor, driven into topological phase by external magnetic field. Additionally, we take into account on-site Coulomb interactions inside the wire. The system is modelled by a tight binding Hamiltonian with Rashba hopping term and induceds-wave superconductivity. Calculations are performed utilizing recursive Green's function method, and Coulomb interactions are treated selfconsistently within Hubbard I approximation. For the Hubbard levels residing withinp-wave superconducting gap, particle-hole symmetric four-resonance structure develops in the density of states, apart from Majorana resonance. One pair of particle-hole symmetric resonances is created by the discrete II-Hubbard levels of the particular site, and the second pair of Hubbard sub-bands originates from recursive summation over the sites of the wire. Quantum interference between both types of pairs of states creates in-gap charge-conjugated Fano resonances with opposite asymmetry factors. We demonstrate that when quantum interference is dominated by two-particle tunneling, the Majorana resonance is strongly diminished, while it is not altered when single-particle tunneling dominates in interference process. We also discuss some consequences for experimental distinction of true Majorana states, and show that on-site Coulomb interactions support the appearance of topological phase.
