Effects of the Mesoporous Filler and Oleophilic Property on the Tribological Behavior of Polyetheretherketone Composites

Porous composites, such as polyimide and polyetheretherketone (PEEK) polymer composites, became more attractive as a result of excellent specific strength, lightweightness, and smart lubrication. However, revealing the influence of a porous filler on the friction behaviors of polymer composites remains a challenge. The current work examines the effects of the pore structure and wettability on the mechanical and tribological performances of polymer composites reinforced with fillers. Three kinds of particles (non-porous, porous, and oleophobic porous) act as fillers within PEEK, respectively. It was identified that adding porous zeolite particles into PEEK slightly decreased the mechanical property. The zeolite particles significantly increased the oil adsorption of the composite, leading to a significant increase in the friction coefficient at 10 wt % content. However, the friction coefficient of the PEEK composite filled with 20 wt % modified zeolite was relatively low as a result of the weak adsorption. The interface analyses indicated that the thickness of the oil film was controlled via porous structures, changing the lubrication regime of the tribopair. The reason is the appropriate adsorption of oil and the release of zeolite from the composites during the friction process. These results can offer technical guidance to control the friction behaviors of composites under oil-lubricating conditions by a porous particle and pore modification.

Polycrystalline Diamond as a Potential Material for the Hard-on-Hard Bearing of Total Hip Prosthesis: Von Mises Stress Analysis

Due to polymeric wear debris causing osteolysis from polymer, metal ions causing metallosis from metal, and brittle characteristic causing fracture failure from ceramic in the application on bearing of total hip prosthesis requires the availability of new material options as a solution to these problems. Polycrystalline diamond (PCD) has the potential to become the selected material for hard-on-hard bearing in view of its advantages in terms of mechanical properties and biocompatibility. The present study contributes to confirming the potential of PCD to replace metals and ceramics for hard-on-hard bearing through von Mises stress investigations. A computational simulation using a 2D axisymmetric finite element model of hard-on-hard bearing under gait loading has been performed. The percentage of maximum von Mises stress to respective yield strength from PCD-on-PCD is the lowest at 2.47%, with CoCrMo (cobalt chromium molybdenum)-on-CoCrMo at 10.79%, and Al₂O₃ (aluminium oxide)-on-Al₂O₃ at 13.49%. This confirms that the use of PCD as a hard-on-hard bearing material is the safest option compared to the investigated metal and ceramic hard-on-hard bearings from the mechanical perspective.

Modeling Fracture Formation, Behavior and Mechanics of Polymeric Materials: A Biomedical Implant Perspective

In industrial applications where contact behavior of materials is characterized, fretting-associated fatigue plays a vital role as a failure agitator. While considering connection, it encounters friction. Biomaterials like polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) and ultra-high-molecular-weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) are renowned for their low coefficient of friction and are utilized in sophisticated functions like the hip joint cup and other biomedical implants. In addition to the axial stresses, some degree of dynamic bending stress is also developed occasionally in those fretting contacts. This research investigated the fracture behavior of a polymer PTFE under bending fretting fatigue. Finite element analysis justified the experimental results. A mathematical model is proposed by developing an empirical equation for fracture characterization in polymers like PTFE. It was found that the bending stiffness exists below the loading point ratio (LPR) 3.0, near the collar section of the specimen. Along with fretting, the bending load forces the specimen to crack in a brittle-ductile mode near the sharp-edged collar where the maximum strain rate, as well as stress, builds up. For a loading point ratio of above 3, a fracture takes place near the fretting pads in a tensile-brittle mode. Strain proportionality factor, k was found as a life optimization parameter under conditional loading. The microscopic analysis revealed that the fracture striation initiates perpendicularly to the fretting load. The fretting fatigue damage characteristic of PTFE may have a new era for the biomedical application of polymer-based composite materials.

A Systematic Review of Unsystematic Total Ankle Replacement Wear Evaluations

BACKGROUND

Numerous studies have reported the use of laboratory multistation joint simulators to successfully predict wear performance and functionality of hip and knee replacements. In contrast, few studies in the peer-reviewed literature have used joint simulation to quantify the wear performance and functionality of ankle replacements. We performed a systematic review of the literature on joint simulator studies that quantified polyethylene wear in total ankle arthroplasty. In addition to the quantified wear results, the load and motion parameters were identified and compared among the studies.

METHODS

A search was performed according to the PRISMA (Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses) guidelines to identify articles reporting total ankle replacement polyethylene wear using joint simulators.

RESULTS

Nine studies that used joint simulators and 1 study that used a computer simulation were found. Although all studies used physiological multidirectional motions (i.e., internal/external rotation, plantar flexion/dorsiflexion, anterior/posterior translation), there was large variability among the studies in the magnitudes of these motions. Among these studies, mean non-cross-linked polyethylene wear ranged from 3.3 ± 0.4 to 25.8 ± 3.1 mm per million cycles. In contrast, mean highly cross-linked polyethylene wear ranged from 2.1 ± 0.3 to 3.3 ± 0.4 mm per million cycles. The wide distribution in wear rates was attributable to the highly inconsistent kinematic parameters and loads applied as well as differences in implant design and materials.

CONCLUSIONS

There is a severe lack of clinically applicable data on wear performance of total ankle replacements in the peer-reviewed literature. No universal set of kinematic load parameters has been established. Furthermore, only 2 of the published studies have validated their findings using independently derived data, such as retrieval analysis. These shortcomings make it difficult to compare findings as a function of design parameters and materials, or to draw clinically relevant conclusions from these simulations. More work is required to enhance the predictive capability of in vitro simulations of total ankle replacements.

CLINICAL RELEVANCE

The results of joint wear simulator studies may not accurately represent in vivo wear of total ankle replacements. Joint simulator studies should establish that they are accurately replicating in vivo wear, thus enabling use of their predictive capabilities for new materials and designs.
