Abstract
The impact of the polymeric matrix on the photophysical characteristics of monomeric dyes responsive to excited-state intramolecular proton transfer (ESIPT) was investigated through UV-Vis absorption as well as steady-state and time-resolved emission spectroscopies. For this purpose, two benzoxazole monomers (M1 and M2) with acryloyl groups at different positions in their molecular structures were employed to facilitate covalent bonding within a styrene chain. Our findings reveal significant variations in their excited-state properties due to the proximity of the acryloyl groups, which affects the energy barrier of the ESIPT reaction, the emission wavelength, and the balance between the normal and tautomeric forms. The experimental results were corroborated through theoretical investigations at the DFT/TDDFT level, specifically using the B3LYP-D3/def2-TZVP methodology. Three notable observations emerged: donor/acceptor groups at the meta/para positions induced electron distribution changes, causing red-shifted emission for M2; in the polymer film, particularly in PM1, intramolecular hydrogen bond deactivation favored N* emission over T* emission; and the zwitterionic character of the T* species. This study underscores the advantages of functionalization in polymers, which can lead to colorless films and prevalent N* or T* emission, and contributes valuable insights into molecular design strategies for tailoring the photophysical properties of polymeric materials.

Abstract
Antioxidant activity, as a topic of current interest, is discussed together with the excited state intramolecular proton transfer (ESIPT) process for three flavonoid derivatives, based on density functional theory (DFT)and time-dependent DFT (TD-DFT) methods, as well as DPPH free radical scavenging assay. The potential energy curves and transition states demonstrate that the three molecules can undergo only single proton transfer in the excited state, and all of them are ultrafast ESIPT processes. The absorption spectra of all the molecules show effective protection against UV radiation with low fluorescence intensity, especially Baicalein (Bai), which demonstrates their great potential for sunscreen applications. The density of states, HOMO energy values, global and local indices reveal that the antioxidant activity of the molecules after ESIPT process is enhanced, with Bai having the highest antioxidant activity, which is significantly attributed to the number and position of phenolic hydroxyl groups. Moreover, by comparing the DPPH free radical scavenging activity under the dark and UV radiation conditions, the radical scavenging activity (RSA) value in the UV radiation is remarkably higher than that in the dark condition, in which Bai achieves RSA value of 93.4%. Overall, the antioxidant activity of all three ESIPT-based flavonoid derivatives, especially Bai, is significantly elevated in the keto* form, which reinforces the significant relationship between antioxidant activity and ESIPT process, and provides new application prospects for molecules with ESIPT properties.

Abstract
Organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) for low energy transfer and double emission, but the current methods for regulating ESIPT processes are mostly solvent and substituent effects. Here, utilizing the density theory functional (DFT) and time-dependent density functional theory (TD-DFT) methods, the ESIPT process controlled by an external electric field (EEF) is proposed, and the changes in photophysical properties of 2-(benzo[d]thiazol-2-yl)-4-(pyren-1-yl)phenol (PyHBT) are investigated. Structural parameter variations and IR vibrational spectra measure the prerequisite for the ESIPT process, namely, intramolecular hydrogen bond (IHB) strength, and the scanned potential energy curves (PECs) demonstrate that the ESIPT process of PyHBT is harder to execute as the positive EEF increases, and the opposite is true for the negative EEF. The absorption and fluorescence spectra show shifts under the distinct EEFs, and even the emission wavelength reaches the short-wave near-infrared (SW-NIR) region (780-1100 nm), such as 815.2 nm for a positive EEF of + 30 × 10-4 a.u. in the keto form. Additionally, the fluorescence intensity of PyHBT is strongly influenced by the positive EEF, especially in the enol form, and the investigation of the mechanism by hole-electron analysis demonstrates that under the positive EEF, the twisted intramolecular charge transfer (TICT) process is induced, which triggers the weakening of the fluorescence intensity. In summary, our work not only complements the theoretical approach to modulate the ESIPT process, but also reveals that the photophysical properties of materials affected by the external electric field are even expected to reach the NIR region.

Abstract
This study reports the rapid intramolecular proton transfer studies upon photo excitation of 2-(benzo[d]thiazol-2-yl)naphthalene-1-ol derivatives, yielding tautomer emission with large Stokes shift. Employing photophysical studies, density functional theory (DFT) and, time-dependent density functional theory (TD-DFT) methods, we scrutinize excited state intramolecular proton transfer (ESIPT) modulation over varying solvent polarities. Analysis of UV-Visible and fluorescence spectra, alongside exploration of hydrogen bond dynamics, reveals solvation effects on the excited state proton transfer process. Theoretical vibrational spectra confirm enhanced hydrogen bond strength in the excited state which is sensitive to the solvent polarity. Energy profile curves and the scatter graph depict impact of solvent polarity on ESIPT. Additionally, molecular interactions and X-ray diffraction studies of the title compound 4a are presented.

Abstract
The electronic structure of the molecule is significantly influenced by the number of conjugated C=C bonds. In this work, the influence of the conjugated C=C bonds of the SNCN derivatives on the excited state intramolecular proton transfer (ESIPT) and intramolecular charge transfer (ICT) properties are studied by density functional theory (DFT) and time-dependent density functional theory (TDDFT). The calculation level is proved to be reasonable by calculating electronic spectra. The hydrogen bond parameters, infrared vibrational frequency (IR), reduction density gradient (RDG) isosurface, topological analysis and potential energy curves of SNCN derivatives in ground state (S0) and the first excited state (S1) are analyzed. According to theoretical research results, ESIPT reaction has a higher likelihood of occurring in the S1 state. Moreover, the ESIPT reaction becomes more challenging to occur with the number of conjugated C=C bonds rising. Finally, the analyses of the frontier molecular orbitals (FMOs), dipole moment and charge transfer transition confirm that the ICT effect is aided by the increased number of conjugated C=C bonds. This work indicates that the number of conjugated C=C bonds can regulate the ESIPT and ICT processes, which provides guidance for the study of fluorescent groups with similar characteristics.

Abstract
Fisetin and Luteolin are important flavonoids produced in plants and known for their antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, neuroprotective, and analgesic properties. They are also good candidates for different types of biosensors. The model used to describe the fluorescence (FL) emission of these flavonoids involves an excited-state intermolecular proton transfer (ESIPT) process that causes a change in the molecule configuration and a corresponding decrease in the emission energy. Due to the different molecular structures of Fisetin and Luteolin, only one possible proton transfer within the molecule is allowed for each of them: transfer of the H3 proton for Fisetin and of the H5 for Luteolin. Here, we compare their calculated emission wavelengths, obtained using TDDFT/M06-2X/6-31++G(d,p), with their FL emission spectra measured on the corresponding powders and solutions and show that the experimental data are consistent with the presence of the ESIPT process. We also compare the emission wavelengths found for Fisetin and Luteolin with those calculated and measured for Quercetin, where, under photoexcitation, the transfers of both H3 and H5 protons are possible. We analyze the difference in the processes associated with the H3 and H5 proton transfers and discuss the reason for the predominance of the H5 proton transfer in Quercetin. Additionally, a new system of notation for flavonoid molecules is developed.

Abstract
The present study describes photophysical properties of 3-(benzo[d]oxazol-2-yl)-5-bromo-2-hydroxybenzaldehyde (HBOB) and (E)-2-(benzo[d]oxazol-2-yl)-4-bromo-6-(hydrazonomethyl)phenol (HBON) molecules with asymmetric two-way proton transfer sites. The purpose of this study is to know the direction of ESIPT out of the two-way proton transfer pathways in these molecules in both the solid and solution state. The steady state and time-resolved spectral behaviour of HBOB and HBON and a comparison of the spectral features with the two distinct control compounds 2-(benzo[d]oxazol-2-yl)-4-bromophenol (HBO) and (E)-4-bromo-2-(hydrazonomethyl)phenol (HBN) having single 6-membered hydrogen bonded network reveal that HBOB undergoes imine-amine photoisomerisation by proton transfer towards the oxazole side and HBON undergoes towards the hydrazone side with characteristic Stokes' shifted emission. Proton transfer forms with the red shifted emission of these molecules shows fast decay than the locally excited state. In the solid state, extremely high fluorescence intensity was observed, following a similar type of ESIPT pattern. Calculated ground (S0) and excited state (S1) energy barriers for the PT process obtained using density functional theory (DFT) and time-dependent density functional theory (TD-DFT) corroborate the unidirectional excited state intramolecular proton transfer (ESIPT) process for HBOB and HBON, and the theoretical spectral features validate our experimental absorption and emission spectra well. Interestingly, the unique unidirectional ESIPT behaviour of HBOB was utilised to detect hydrazine both in solution and solid phases. On the other hand, HBON was found to be a good fluorescence pH sensor with a ratiometric color change from yellow to green in acidic and basic media.

Abstract
DFT and TD-DFT were used in this article to investigate the effects of different substitutions at multiple sites on the photophysical mechanism of bis-HBX in the gas phase. Four different substitution modes were selected, denoted as A1 (X=Me, Y=S), A2 (X=OMe, Y=S), B1 (X=Me, Y=NH), and C1 (X=Me, Y=O). The geometric parameters proved that the IHBs enhanced after photoexcitation, which was conducive to promote the ESIPT process. Combining the analysis of the PECs, it was revealed that the bis-HBX molecule underwent the ESIPT process, and the ease of the ESIPT process was in the order of A1 > A2> B1 > C1. In particular, the TICT process in A1 and B1 promoted the occurrence of the ESIPT process. In addition, the IC process was identified, particularly in C1. Meanwhile, the calculation of fluorescence lifetime and fluorescence rate further confirmed that A1 was the most effective fluorescent probe molecule. This theoretical research provides an innovative theoretical reference for regulating ESIPT reactions and optimizing fluorescent probe molecules.

Abstract
In this work, by capitalizing on the density functional theory (DFT) and the time-dependent density functional theory (TD-DFT) methods, it has been systematically studied that the excited state double intramolecular proton transfer (ESDPT) process and the photophysical properties of 1,8-dihydroxy-2-naphthaldehyde (DHNA) are affected by the distinct external electric fields (EEFs). The obtained intramolecular hydrogen bond (IHB) parameters containing bond lengths and angles, as well as infrared (IR) vibrational spectra demonstrate that IHB strength changes in the distinct EEFs. Moreover, not only do the potential energy surfaces (PESs) indicate that the ESDPT process of DHNA is stepwise, but also increasing the positive EEF results in a decrease in the energy barrier accordingly, while vice versa. The absorption and fluorescence spectra also undergo a corresponding red or blue shift in the EEF; for instance, when the EEF changes from +10 × 10-4 a.u. to +20 × 10-4 a.u., the fluorescence peak undergoes a blue shift from 602 nm to 513 nm in the keto2 form. In a nutshell, the ESDPT process of DHNA can be influenced by the EEF, which will serve as a reference in regulating and controlling proton transfer that causes luminescence.

Abstract
Kaempferol (KMP) is one of the most common flavonoids, currently being extensively studied for its numerous beneficial health effects. Here we study the fluorescence (FL) emission of KMP powder and of its solutions prepared using different types of solvents (polar and non-polar). In the spectra of KMP powder and KMP solutions with high concentration, the same FL peak with maximum at 1.9 eV is observed. Another FL peak, at higher energy of 2.45 eV, emerges in solutions, its relative intensity increases with decreasing solution concentration. The FL emission of solutions with lowest concentration displays only that peak. To calculate characteristic energies of absorption and emission of KMP molecule in vacuum and in solutions we use time-dependent density functional theory. Comparing the results of computations with measured FL spectra, we associate the FL band at 1.9 eV with the emission due to excited state intramolecular transfer of the proton of -OH5 hydroxyl group. The FL emission at 2.45 eV is related to the -OH3 proton transfer. We measure the FL spectra of KMP powder using two different excitation energies, 3.06 eV and 2.33 eV, and find that its FL spectrum depends on the excitation energy. To understand that dependence, we compare the FL spectra of KMP and Q monohydrate powders. We consider the excited state intermolecular transfer of the proton from -OH3' hydroxyl group to a neighboring molecule in Q crystal and calculate the energy corresponding to the emission of the resulted anion of Q molecule. The spectral feature at 1.69 eV observed only in the FL spectrum of Q hydrate is attributed to the Q anion FL emission.

Abstract
Myricetin is a flavonol with high antioxidant properties. In this research, the fluorescence emission of myricetin powder and its solutions in different solvents were measured and analyzed by comparing with the results of calculations. Comparison of the calculated and measured characteristic wavelengths allowed the identification of all the spectral features in the fluorescence spectra of myricetin powder and solutions with different concentrations. The computation was based on modeling the process of the excited state intermolecular proton transfer, which predicts the formation of tautomeric forms of the flavonol molecule. Characteristic emission wavelengths were obtained using TDDFT/M06-2X/6-31++G(d,p). To understand the influence of the hydroxyl groups in the B-ring of the flavonol molecule on the emission spectrum, we also compared the fluorescence spectra of myricetin with those of kaempferol and quercetin. Moreover, based on the analysis of the changes in the shape of the FL spectra with the concentration of the solution, a criterion for the complete dissolution of the flavonol powders was established, which is important for bioavailability of flavonoids.

Abstract
Photooxygenation of flavonoids leads to the release of carbon monoxide (CO). Our structure-photoreactivity study, employing several structurally different flavonoids, including their 13C-labeled analogs, revealed that CO can be produced via two completely orthogonal pathways, depending on their hydroxy group substitution pattern and the reaction conditions. While photooxygenation of the enol 3-OH group has previously been established as the CO liberation channel, we show that the catechol-type hydroxy groups of ring B can predominantly participate in photodecarbonylation.

Abstract
Excited state hydrogen (ESHT) and proton (ESPT) transfer reaction pathways in the three and four solvent clusters of 6-azaindole (6AI-S3,4 ) and 2,6-diazaindole (26DAI-S3,4 )(S=H2 O, NH3 ) were computationally investigated to understand the fate of photo-excited biomolecules. The ESHT energy barriers in (H2 O)3 complexes (39.6-41.3 kJmol-1 ) were decreased in (H2 O)4 complexes (23.1-20.2 kJmol-1 ). Lengthening the solvent chain lowered the barrier because of the relaxed transition states geometries with reduced angular strains. Replacing the water molecule with ammonia drastically decreased the energy barriers to 21.4-21.3 kJmol-1 in (NH3 )3 complexes and 8.1-9.5 kJ mol-1 in (NH3 )4 complexes. The transition states were identified as Ha atom attached to the first solvent molecule. The formation of stronger hydrogen bonds in (NH3 )3,4 complexes resulted in facile ESHT reaction than that in the (H2 O)3,4 complexes. The ESPT energy barriers in 6AI-S3,4 and 26DAI-S3,4 were found to range between 40-73 kJmol-1 . The above values were significantly higher than that of the ESHT processes and hence are considered as a minor channel in the process. The effect of N(2) insertion was explored for the very first time in the isolated solvent clusters using local vibrational mode analysis. In DAI-S4 , the higher Ka (Ha ⋯Sa ) values depicted the increased photoacidity of the N(1)-Ha group which may facilitate the hydrogen transfer reaction. However, the increased N(6)⋯Hb bond length elevated the reaction barriers. Therefore, in the ESHT reaction channel, the co-existence of two competing factors led to a marginal/no change in the overall energy barriers due to the N(2) insertion. In the ESPT reaction pathway, the energy barriers showed notable increase upon N(2) insertion because of the increased N(6)⋯Hb bond length.

Abstract
The discovery and implementation of media that derive from bioinspired designs and bear optical readouts featuring large Stokes shifts are of continued interest to a wide variety of researchers and clinicians. Myco-F, a novel mycophenolic acid precursor-based probe features a cleavable tert-butyldimethylsiloxy group to allow for fluoride detection. Myco-F exhibits high selectivity and specificity towards F- (Stokes shift = 120 nm). All measurements were performed in complete aqueous media (LOD=0.38 μM). Myco-F enables detection of fluoride ions in living HEK293 cells and localizes in the eye region (among other regions) of the zebrafish. DFT calculations support the proposed ESIPT working photomechanism.

Abstract
CONTEXT In recent years, fluorescent probe technology has received more and more attention. However, the photophysical and photochemical properties of probe molecules still need to be further explored. This paper presents the excited state intramolecular proton transfer (ESIPT) processes and photophysical properties of the probe molecule 4-bromo-2-((E)-((Z)-((5-bromo-1H-indol-2-yl) methylene) hydrazono) methyl) phenol (BHPL) and its four derivatives (BHPL2, BHPL3, BHPL4, and BHPL5). Infrared spectra and geometric structure analyses revealed that introducing the -NH2 group on the benzene ring with the hydroxyl group will enhance the intramolecular hydrogen bond, which benefits the ESIPT process. Combining their absorption and fluorescence spectra, it can be concluded that BHPL2 and BHPL4 are both excellent probe candidates due to their large Stokes shift. The hole and electron and root mean square displacement analyses manifest that the fluorescence quenching of BHPL4 may be due to the intramolecular charge transfer process. Potential energy curves of BHPL and its four derivatives noted that ESIPT process of the BHPL2 is the most favorable to occur. The frontier molecular orbital and NBO analyses indicated that besides introducing electron-donating groups to reduce the energy gap and enhance fluorescence emission, introducing double electron-withdrawing groups can also achieve this effect, explaining why the energy barrier of ESIPT process for BHPL2 is lower than BHPL5. This work would provide the theoretical basis for designing novel fluorescence probes with more prominent properties. METHODS The ground (S0) and excited (S1) state structures of all compounds were optimized by density functional theory (DFT) and time-dependent (TDDFT) method, with B3LYP/6-311+G(d,p) level, respectively. The infrared spectra and potential energy curves were simulated at the same theoretical level. The reduced density gradient scatter plots and interaction region indicator isosurfaces were drawn using Multiwfn and VMD programs. The absorption and fluorescence spectra were simulated by the TDDFT/B3PW91/6-311+G(d,p) method. All the calculations in this work are carried out in Gaussian 16 program package.

Abstract
A pyrene-based e xcited - state intramolecular proton transfer (ESIPT) active probe PMHMP was synthesized, characterized, and employed for the ppb-level, dual-mode, and high-fidelity detection of Cu2+ (LOD: 7.8 ppb) and Zn2+ ions (LOD: 4.2 ppb) in acetonitrile medium. The colorless solution of PMHMP turned yellow upon the addition of Cu2+, suggesting its ratiometric, naked-eye sensing. On the contrary, Zn2+ ions displayed concentration-dependent fluorescence rise till a 0.5 mole fraction and subsequent quenching. Mechanistic investigations indicated the formation of a 1:2 exciplex (Zn2+:PMHMP) at a lower concentration of Zn2+, which eventually turned into a more stable 1:1 (Zn2+:PMHMP) complex with an additional amount of Zn2+ ions. However, in both cases, it was observed that the hydroxyl group and the nitrogen atom of the azomethine unit were involved in the metal ion coordination, which eventually altered the ESIPT emission. Furthermore, a green-fluorescent 2:1 PMHMP-Zn2+ complex was developed and additionally employed for the fluorimetric analysis of both Cu2+ and H2PO4 - ions. The Cu2+ ion, owing to its higher binding affinity for PMHMP, could replace the Zn2+ ion from the preformed complex. On the other hand, H2PO4 - formed a tertiary adduct with the Zn2+-complex, leading to a distinguishable optical signal. Furthermore, extensive and organized density functional theory calculations were performed to explore the ESIPT behavior of PMHMP and the geometrical and electronic properties of the metal complexes.

Abstract
This work considers excited state intramolecular proton transfers (ESIPT) occurred in multiple hydroxyl-containing compounds with one proton transfer site in the normal form. If several hydroxyl groups are located close to each other in a molecule, then the ESIPT process can lead to the next one. A proton donor site in the first ESIPT will be a proton acceptor during the second reaction. Therefore, a number of consecutive excited state proton transfers can occur. This work deals with the case of two successive proton transfers occurred in the molecular system. Such process is called as a stepwise excited state intramolecular double proton transfer (stepwise ESIDPT). It leads to the formation of two molecular tautomers. Therefore, fluorescence of such compounds can contain different emission bands correspond to emission of normal form and two tautomers. In this work, a rigorous analysis of fluorescence decay kinetics has been made using the model with three species, including a normal molecular form and two tautomers. The work presents theoretical framework of fluorescence decay analysis of ESIDPT process taking into account three species emission. Theoretically, the stepwise proton transfers can be consisted of more than two ESIPT reactions. It depends on molecular structure and number of involved hydroxyl groups. Here, a formal analysis of fluorescence decay kinetics has been made in the case of a stepwise process consisting of two proton transfers. Moreover, the quantum-chemical calculations have been performed in the case of scutellarein. It is a multiple hydroxyl-containing flavone and, therefore, it can be applied as a model molecule to study stepwise intramolecular proton transfers. The hypothetical scheme of ESIDPT has been proposed for this compound.

Abstract
Organic molecules with excited-state intramolecular proton transfer (ESIPT) and thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) properties have great potential for realizing efficient organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs). Furthermore, 2,2'-bipyridine-3,3'-diol (BP(OH)2) is a typical molecule with ESIPT and TADF properties. Previously, the double ESIPT state was proved to be a luminescent state, and the T2 state plays a dominant role in TADF for the molecule. Nevertheless, whether BP(OH)2 undergoes a double or single ESIPT process is controversial. Since different ESIPT channels will bring different TADF mechanisms, the previously proposed TADF mechanism based on the double ESIPT structure for BP(OH)2 needs to be reconsidered. Herein, reduced density gradient, potential energy surface, IR spectra and exited-state hydrogen-bond dynamics computations confirm that BP(OH)2 undergoes the barrierless single ESIPT process rather than the double ESIPT process with a barrier. Moreover, based on the single ESIPT structure, we calculated spin-orbit coupling matrix elements, nonradiative rates and electron-hole distributions. These results disclose that the T3 state plays a predominant role in TADF. Our investigation provides a better understanding on the TADF mechanism in hydrogen-bonded molecular systems and the interaction between ESIPT and TADF, which further provides a reference for developing efficient OLEDs.

Abstract
In the present work, four probe molecules for detecting hydrazine have been designed based on the 2-(4-Acetoxy-3-benzothiazole-2-yl-phenyl)-4-methyl-thiazole- 5-carboxylic acid ethyl ester (HP1) to investigate the influence of the amino and cyano groups on the excited-state intramolecular proton transfer (ESIPT) behavior and photophysical properties. The changes in hydrogen bond strength indicate that the intramolecular hydrogen bond of all probe products is enhanced upon photoexcitation. Frontier molecular orbitals (FMOs) and natural bond orbital (NBO) reveal the driving force of ESIPT. In addition, the potential energy curves and transition state theory explain the reason for the single fluorescence phenomenon in the experiment. The simulated absorption and fluorescence spectra of HP1 and its product (HPP1) are completely consistent with the experimental results, which also verify the viewpoint. Meanwhile the cyano derivative HPP4 exhibits a larger Stokes-shift (201 nm) than that of HPP1 (145 nm) and has the same low energy barrier as HPP1. These excellent properties allow HPP4 to be a fluorescent probe with superior performance than the original molecule. In conclusion, this work can provide a theoretical basis for the design and synthesis of more sensitive fluorescent probes for the detection of hydrazine.

Abstract
Morin (M) is one of the most widely distributed flavonoids with several beneficial effects on human health, and has the potential of being used as a possible treatment for COVID-19. To achieve a better understanding of the process of M dissolution, the fluorescent (FL) emission from M solutions prepared with different polar and nonpolar solvents (methanol, DMSO, and chloroform) was measured and compared with the FL emission from M powder and M crystals. In the FL spectra of the solutions with high M concentration, as well as in the spectra of M in solid state, two features, at 615 nm and 670 nm, were observed. As the solution concentration decreases, the maxima of FL spectra of the M solutions in all considered solvents shift to the blue side of the spectrum until reaching the value of 520 nm. To explain the experimental results, the TDDFT-M06-2X/6-31++G(d,p) method was used to determine the possible electronic transitions in the M molecule. The computations show that the FL emission in the spectral range of detection of our setup (405–800 nm) is related to the excited state intramolecular proton transfer (ESIPT). Comparison of the experimental data with the computations strongly suggests that in low-concentrated solutions, the FL emission is mostly due to electronic transitions in the keto OH3 form, whereas in aggregated states, the dominate contribution to the FL emission spectra is due to the transitions in keto OH5 form. Moreover, the time evolution of the M solutions FL spectra was observed, measured and explained for the first time.

Abstract
The development of fluorescence materials with switched on/off emission has attracted great attention owing to the potential application of these materials in chemical sensing. In this work, the photophysical properties of a series of original 2-(2'-hydroxyphenyl)pyrimidines were thoroughly studied. The compounds were prepared by following well-established and straightforward methodologies and showed very little or null photoluminescence both in solution and in the solid state. This absence of emission can be explained by a fast proton transfer from the OH group to the nitrogen atoms of the pyrimidine ring to yield an excited tautomer that deactivates through a nonradiative pathway. The key role of the OH group in the emission quenching was demonstrated by the preparation of 2'-unsubstituted derivatives, all of which exhibited violet or blue luminescence. Single crystals of some compounds suitable for an X-ray diffraction analysis could be obtained, which permitted us to investigate inter- and intramolecular interactions and molecular packing structures. The protonation of the pyrimidine ring by an addition of trifluoroacetic acid inhibited the excited-state intramolecular proton transfer (ESIPT) process, causing a reversible switch on fluorescence response detectable by the naked eye. This acidochromic behavior allows 2-(2'-hydroxyphenyl)pyrimidines to be used as solid-state acid-base vapor sensors and anticounterfeiting agents. Extensive density functional theory and its time-dependent counterpart calculations at the M06-2X/6-31+G** level of theory were performed to rationalize all the experimental results and understand the impact of protonation on the different optical transitions.

Abstract
Two novel compounds (HQS and HQSe) with excited-state intramolecular proton transfer (ESIPT) properties were designed based on the compound 2-(2-hydroxy-3-ethoxyphenyl)-3H-quinazolin-4-one (HQ). The parameters related to the ESIPT properties and electronic spectra of HQ and its derivatives were calculated using density functional theory and time-dependent density functional theory methods. The obtained geometric configurations, infrared vibrational spectra, and reduced density gradient scatter plots have shown that the intramolecular hydrogen bond O1···H1-N1 has been weakened upon photoexcitation. Moreover, from the scanned potential energy curves, it can be found that the ESIPT processes of the three compounds have no energy barriers. It is noteworthy that HQS and HQSe can strongly absorb light in the UVA region (∼340 nm) and exhibit weak fluorescence emission in the visible light region, which comes from the keto configuration. The special optical properties of HQS and HQSe can promote their application as potential sunscreen agents.

Abstract
In this work, the effects of atomic electronegativity (O, S, and Se atoms) on the competitive double excited-state intramolecular proton transfer (ESIPT) reactions and photophysical characteristics of uralenol (URA) were systematically explored by using the density functional theory (DFT) and time-dependent DFT (TD-DFT) methods. The calculated hydrogen bond parameters, infrared (IR) vibrational spectra, reduced density gradient (RDG) scatter plots, interaction region indicator (IRI) isosurface and topology parameters have confirmed the six-membered intramolecular hydrogen bond (IHB) O4H5…O3 is the stronger one in all the three studied compounds. Subsequently, frontier molecular orbitals (FMOs) and natural bond orbital (NBO) population analysis essentially uncover that the electron redistribution has induced the ESIPT process. Besides, the constructed potential energy curves (PECs) have indicated that the ESIPT process prefers to occur along the O4H5…O3 rather than the O1H2…O3 and the proton-transfer energy barrier is gradually decreased with the weakening of atomic electronegativity from URA to URA-S and URA-Se. In a conclusion, the attenuating of atomic electronegativity has enhanced the IHBs of URA and thereby promoting the ESIPT reaction, which is helpful for further developing novel fluorophores based on ESIPT behavior in the future.

Abstract
Quercetin (Q) is an important antioxidant with high bioactivity and the potential of being used as SARS-CoV-2 inhibitor. The fluorescence (FL) emission from Q solutions made with different polar and non-polar solvents (methanol, acetone, and chloroform) was measured and compared with the FL emission from Q powder and from Q crystals. In the FL spectra of the solutions with high Q concentration, as well as in the spectra of Q in solid state, two features, at 615 nm and 670 nm, were observed. As the solution concentration decreases, the intensity of those peaks decreases and a peak at 505 nm arises. The FL emission of low concentration solutions displayed only that peak. Calculations for the Q molecule in each solvent, performed using time-dependent density functional theory (TDDFT), show that the emission at 505 nm is associated with the excited state intramolecular proton transfer (ESIPT) of the –OH3 group proton. Our calculations also show that the feature at 615 nm, which is observed in solid state Q and also in the emission of the high concentrated solutions, is related to the –OH5 proton transfer.

Abstract
Inexperiment, Song et al. have successfully synthesizedtwo novel molecules BtyC-1 and BtyC-2 and observedasingle and dual fluorescence peaks in these two molecules respectively. (Song et al. Tetrahedron Lett. 2019, 60, 1696-1701) However, they still lack a detailed and reasonable theoretical explanation. Then we wonder why these two similar structures behave so much differently? In this work, we focus on explaining the photochemical and photophysical properties of BtyC-1 and BtyC-2 by studying the excited state intramolecular proton transfer (ESIPT) mechanisms. Based on the optimized geometric configurations, the calculated infrared spectra indicate the intramolecular hydrogen bonding interactions are heightened in their excited states. The frontier molecular orbitals reflect the charge redistribution in photoinduced process, which explains that the driving force of ESIPT process is provided by enhanced hydrogen bonding interactions. In the meantime, the calculations of potential energy curves vividly explain the principle of the experimental dual fluorescence phenomenon. The analysis of Mulliken charges deepens the discussion of molecular structures on the potential energy barriers. Calculated absorption spectra via using density functional theory and emission spectra via using time-dependent density functional theory are consistent with the experimental data, which confirms the correctness of our calculation methods. The reduced density gradient isosurfaces help us distinguish the complex non-covalent bonds. Base on the above analyses, we conclude that there is no stable structure for BtyC-1 in excited state, which make it occur the ESIPT reaction spontaneously. BtyC-2 exists a stable normal structure in excited state. Its dual fluorescence signals are emitted by its normal and isomer structures, respectively.

Abstract
The excited-state intramolecular proton transfer (ESIPT) phenomenon is nowadays widely acknowledged to play a crucial role in many photobiological and photochemical processes. It is an extremely fast transformation, often taking place at sub-100 fs timescales. While its experimental characterization can be highly challenging, a rich manifold of theoretical approaches at different levels is nowadays available to support and guide experimental investigations. In this perspective, we summarize the state-of-the-art quantum-chemical methods, as well as molecular- and quantum-dynamics tools successfully applied in ESIPT process studies, focusing on a critical comparison of their specific properties.

Abstract
Substituent effects on excited-state intramolecular proton transfer (ESIPT) and photophysical properties of 2-(2-Hydroxyphenyl) benzothiazole (HBT) derivatives have been theoretically unveiled via the density functional theory (DFT) and time-dependent DFT (TDDFT). The optimized geometrical configurations and normal mode analyses confirm that the proton transfer processes are more reactive in excited state. Through calculating the activation energies and rate constants of ESIPT processes, finding that the processes are increasingly inactive when substituent group changes from -CN, -CO2Me, -Cl, -Me, -NMe2 to -NO2. In addition, the photophysical properties analyses indicate the vertical transition energies are in good agreement with those observed in experiment. Note that all the absorption and emission maxima of enol and keto forms have the significant red-shift. In order to clarify the substituent effect on ESIPT and photophysical properties, we draw the frontier molecular orbitals (FMOs) isosurfaces and calculate the distances of electrons and holes and atomic charges. It follows that the intramolecular charge transfer (ICT) degrees are increasingly enlarged as substituting from -CN, -CO2Me, -Cl, -Me, -NMe2 to -NO2 groups, which not only causes the red-shift of absorption and emission of enol and keto forms, but also affects the charge distribution of proton donor and acceptor, inhibiting the occurrence of ESIPT processes.

Abstract
The effect of microsolvation on excited-state proton transfer (ESPT) reaction of 3-hydroxyflavone (3HF) and its inclusion complex with γ-cyclodextrin (γ-CD) was studied using computational approaches. From molecular dynamics simulations, two possible inclusion complexes formed by the chromone ring (C-ring, Form I) and the phenyl ring (P-ring, Form II) of 3HF insertion to γ-CD were observed. Form II is likely more stable because of lower fluctuation of 3HF inside the hydrophobic cavity and lower water accessibility to the encapsulated 3HF. Next, the conformation analysis of these models in the ground (S0) and the first excited (S1) states was carried out by density functional theory (DFT) and time-dependent DFT (TD-DFT) calculations, respectively, to reveal the photophysical properties of 3HF influenced by the γ-CD. The results show that the intermolecular hydrogen bonding (interHB) between 3HF and γ-CD, and intramolecular hydrogen bonding (intraHB) within 3HF are strengthened in the S1 state confirmed by the shorter interHB and intraHB distances and the red-shift of O–H vibrational modes involving in the ESPT process. The simulated absorption and emission spectra are in good agreement with the experimental data. Significantly, in the S1 state, the keto form of 3HF is stabilized by γ-CD, explaining the increased quantum yield of keto emission of 3HF when complexing with γ-CD in the experiment. In the other word, ESPT of 3HF is more favorable in the γ-CD hydrophobic cavity than in aqueous solution.

Abstract
This paper presented an effective way to select monomers to fabricate active layers for the thin-film composite (TFC) membrane at the molecular level. Five types of diamine monomers and six acid chloride monomers were firstly selected by a conformer search process. Then, the conceptual density functional theory (CDFT) method was adopted to examine the properties of these monomers. A few different molecular properties were calculated, including relative energy, hydrogen bond, global/local/difference local softness, hardness, chemical potential, and electrophilicity index. Similarly, polyamides that were the productions of interfacial polymerization reaction were also analyzed by CDFT. Our results showed that the mixture of trimesoyl chloride (TMC) and m-phenylenediamine (MPD) for the interfacial polymerization was ideal synthetic materials to fabricate the active layer of TFC membranes. Graphical abstract Polyamides synthesis by interfacial polymerization.

Abstract
In this study at the MP2/6-311++G(2df,pd)//B3LYP/6-311++G(d,p) level of quantum-mechanical theory it was explored conformational variety of the isolated quercetin molecule due to the mirror-symmetrical hindered turnings of the O3H, O5H and O7H hydroxyl groups, belonging to the A and C rings, around the exocyclic C–O bonds. These dipole active conformational transformations proceed through the 72 transition states (TSs; C1 point symmetry) with non-orthogonal orientation of the hydroxyl groups relatively the plane of the A or C rings of the molecule (HO7C7C8/HO7C7C6 = ±(89.9–93.3), HO5C5C10 = ±(108.9–114.4) and HO3C3C4 = ±(113.6–118.8 degrees) (here and below signs ‘±’ corresponds to the enantiomers)) with Gibbs free energy barrier of activation ΔΔGTS in the range 3.51–16.17 kcal·mol−1 under the standard conditions (T = 298.1 K and pressure 1 atm): ΔΔGTSO7H (3.51–4.27) < ΔΔGTSO3H (9.04–11.26) < ΔΔGTSO5H (12.34–16.17 kcal mol−1). Conformational dynamics of the O3H and O5H groups is partially controlled by the intramolecular specific interactions O3H…O4, C2′/C6′H…O3, O3H…C2′/C6′, O5H…O4 and O4…O5, which are flexible and cooperative. Dipole-active interconversions of the enantiomers of the non-planar conformers of the quercetin molecule (C1 point symmetry) is realized via the 24 TSs with C1 point symmetry (HO3C3C2C1 = ±(11.0–19.1), HC2′/C6′C1′C2 = ±(0.6–2.9) and C3C2C1′C2′/C3C2C1′C6′ = ±(1.7–9.1) degree; ΔΔGTS = 1.65–5.59 kcal·mol−1), which are stabilized by the participation of the intramolecular C2′/C6′H…O1 and O3H…HC2′/C6′ H-bonds. Investigated conformational rearrangements are rather quick processes, since the time, which is necessary to acquire thermal equilibrium does not exceed 6.5 ns.

Abstract
Quercetin molecule (3, 3', 4', 5, 7-pentahydroxyflavone, C15H10O7) is an important flavonoid compound of natural origin, consisting of two aromatic A and B rings linked through the C ring with endocyclic oxygen atom and five hydroxyl groups attached to the 3, 3', 4', 5 and 7 positions. This molecule is found in many foods and plants, and is known to have a wide range of therapeutic properties, like an anti-oxidant, anti-toxic, anti-inflammatory etc. In this study for the first time we have revealed and investigated the pathways of the tautomeric transformations for the most stable conformers of the isolated quercetin molecule (Brovarets' & Hovorun, 2019) via the intramolecular proton transfer. Energetic, structural, dynamical and polar characteristics of these transitions, in particular relative Gibbs free and electronic energies, characteristics of the intramolecular specific interactions-H-bonds and attractive van der Waals contacts, have been analysed in details. It was demonstrated that the most probable process among all investigated is the proton transfer from the O3H hydroxyl group of the C ring to the C2' carbon atom of the C2'H group of the B ring along the intramolecular O3H…C2' H-bond with the further formation of the C2'H2 group. It was established that the proton transfer from the hydroxyl groups to the carbon atoms of the neighboring CH groups is assisted at the transition states by the strong intramolecular HCH…O H-bond (~28.5 kcal∙mol-1). The least probable path of the proton transfer-from the C8H group to the endocyclic O1 oxygen atom-causes the decyclization of the C ring in some cases. It is shortly discussed the biological importance of the obtained results.

Abstract
In this work, we present that different structures lead to different excited state properties based on the investigations of the systems with symmetrical and unsymmetrical properties. Our work shows that the symmetrical and unsymmetrical compounds with a modified structure play key roles in regulating the excited state intramolecular proton transfer (PT) (ESIPT) process. For N,N'-bis(salicylidene)-p-phenyle-nediamine (BSP) and N,N'-disalicylidene-1,6-pyrenediamine (BSD), when they are excited, the torsion angels result in the rematch of the spectra. By analyzing the potential energy surfaces (PESs) of the torsion angle and PT process, we conclude that the size of the π stack largely affects the molecular properties in the excited states. For 2'-hydroxychalcone derivatives, which have important applications in biotransformation reactions, investigating the molecules of M1 and M2 could promote innovation in bioengineering. The results of molecular electrostatic potential (MEP) and the real space intramolecular interactions show the state and position of the hydrogen bond (HB) in both S0 and S1 states. The corresponding PT PESs show that the ESIPT reaction is much easier for the M1 system due to the lack of the side chain hydroxyl compared with the M2 system. This work is not only consistent with experimental results and explains its mechanism but also presents that symmetric and nonsymmetric structures modify their own potential regulation and controlling effects for ESIPT behaviors.

Abstract
In this work, the influence of cyanide group substituted on the excited-state intramolecular proton transfer of 2-(2-hydroxyphenyl)benzothiazole (HBT) has been theoretical studied. It is found that the intramolecular hydrogen bonds of HBT and its cyanide substituted derivatives are significantly strengthened in the first excited (S1) state, while this strengthening tends to decrease with the substitution of cyano group. The natural population analysis (NPA) is performed to interpret this phenomenon and the calculated results show that the introduction of cyano groups induces intramolecular charge transfer, leading to the decrease of electrostatic interaction of intramolecular hydrogen bond in the S1 state compared to isolated HBT. Therefore, proton transfer of HBT and its derivatives become difficult with the introduction of cyano groups, which is consistent with the calculated potential barriers (1.95, 2.71 and 2.81 kcal/mol respectively) of the three molecules in the S1 state. This work interprets the hindrance of cyanide group on the proton transfer of HBT and its derivatives in the S1 state, which will bring new insight into the study of analogous molecular system.
