Full-field real-time characterization of creeping solitons dynamics in a mode-locked fiber laser

Creeping solitons, which belong to the class of pulsating solitons, can be meaningful for fundamental physics owing to their fruitful nonlinear dynamics. Their characteristics in mode-locked lasers have been studied theoretically, but it is difficult to experimentally observe evolution dynamics in real time. Here, we have experimentally observed the temporal and spectral evolution dynamics of creeping solitons in a passively mode-locked fiber laser by employing time-lens and dispersive Fourier transform technique. With the aid of Raman amplification, the measured recording length of the time lens in the asynchronous mode could be substantially improved. Temporal soliton snaking motion and spectral breathing dynamics are experimentally obtained, confirming intrinsic feature of pulsation dynamics. These results display how single-shot measurements can offer new insights into ultrafast transient dynamics in nonlinear optics.

Instabilities in a dissipative soliton-similariton laser using a scalar iterative map

Numerical simulations of a dissipative soliton-similariton laser are shown to reproduce a range of instabilities seen in recent experiments. The model uses a scalar nonlinear Schrödinger equation map, and regions of stability and instability are readily identified as a function of gain and saturable absorber parameters. Studying evolution over multiple round trips reveals spectral instabilities linked with soliton molecule internal motion, soliton explosions, chaos, and intermittence. For the case of soliton molecules, the relative phase variation in the spectrum is shown to be due to differences in nonlinear phase evolution between the molecule components over multiple round trips.

High-power pulse, pulse pair, and pulse train generated by breathers in dispersion exponentially decreasing fiber

Based on the derived rational solutions of the nonautonomous nonlinear Schrödinger equation with varying coefficients, we present a simple scheme to generate a high-power pulse, pulse pair, and pulse train with non-oscillating amplitudes in dispersion exponentially decreasing fiber. Without requiring elimination of the background, the stable pulse train can be generated from the first-order Akhmediev breather, and the high-power pulse and pulse pair can be generated from the second-order Kuznetsov-Ma breather. Moreover, it is found that the characteristics of these pulses can be controlled by adjusting the eigenvalue parameter and fiber parameters. The results presented here are expected to be useful in large-capacity and high-power optical communication systems.

Real-Time Observation of the Buildup of Soliton Molecules

Real-time spectroscopy access to ultrafast fiber lasers opens new opportunities for exploring complex soliton interaction dynamics. Here, we have reported the first observation, to the best of our knowledge, of the entire buildup process of soliton molecules (SMs) in a mode-locked laser. We have observed that the birth dynamics of a stable SM experiences five different stages, i.e., the raised relaxation oscillation (RO) stage, beating dynamics stage, transient single pulse stage, transient bound state, and finally the stable bound state. We have discovered that the evolution of pulses in the raised RO stage follows a law that only the strongest one can ultimately survive and, meanwhile, the pulses periodically appear at the same temporal positions for all lasing spikes during the same RO stage (named as memory ability) but they lose such ability between different RO stages. Moreover, we have found that the buildup dynamics of SMs is quite sensitive to both the polarization state of intracavity light and the fluctuation of pump power. These results provide new perspectives into the ultrafast transient process in mode-locked lasers and the dynamics of complex nonlinear systems.

Manipulation of group-velocity-locked vector dissipative solitons and properties of the generated high-order vector soliton structure

Details of various composites of the projections originated from a fundamental group-velocity-locked vector dissipative soliton (GVLVDS) are both experimentally and numerically explored. By combining the projections from the orthogonal polarization components of the GVLVDS, a high-order vector soliton structure with a double-humped pulse profile along one polarization and a single-humped pulse profile along the orthogonal polarization can be observed. Moreover, by de-chirping the composite double-humped pulse, the time separation between the two humps is reduced from 15.36 ps to 1.28 ps, indicating that the frequency chirp of the GVLVDS contributes significantly to the shaping of the double-humped pulse profile.

Decomposition of group-velocity-locked-vector-dissipative solitons and formation of the high-order soliton structure by the product of their recombination

By using a polarization manipulation and projection system, we numerically decomposed the group-velocity-locked-vector-dissipative solitons (GVLVDSs) from a normal dispersion fiber laser and studied the combination of the projections of the phase-modulated components of the GVLVDS through a polarization beam splitter. Pulses with a structure similar to a high-order vector soliton could be obtained, which could be considered as a pseudo-high-order GVLVDS. It is found that, although GVLVDSs are intrinsically different from group-velocity-locked-vector solitons generated in fiber lasers operated in the anomalous dispersion regime, similar characteristics for the generation of pseudo-high-order GVLVDS are obtained. However, pulse chirp plays a significant role on the generation of pseudo-high-order GVLVDS.

Cascaded gain-switching in the mid-infrared region

In this report, we demonstrate mid-infrared dual-waveband (i.e., ~3 μm and ~2 μm) pulses from a cascaded gain-switched Ho³⁺-doped ZBLAN fiber laser by the use of hybrid pumping of 1150 nm CW and pulse LDs for the first time. Stable ~3 μm gain-switched pulses with the maximum output power 262.14 mW and shortest pulse duration of 0.824 μs were first gained at the repetition rate of 80 kHz and wavelength of 2928.5 nm. Then stable ~2 μm gain-switched pulses at 2068 nm were achieved at a switchable repetition rate between 40 kHz and 80 kHz. The maximum output power and shortest pulse duration were 75.23 mW and 0.787 μs, respectively (not simultaneously). Between them, there is a power-dependent μs-order time delay. This dual-waveband laser source has great potential in laser surgery, material processing.

Tunable and switchable dual-waveband ultrafast fiber laser with 100 GHz repetition-rate

We demonstrate a tunable and switchable dual-waveband 100 GHz high-repetition-rate (HRR) ultrafast fiber laser based on dissipative four-wave-mixing (DFWM) mode-locked technique. Each waveband maintains HRR operation. The DFWM effect was realized by combining a Fabry-Perot (F-P) filter and a piece of highly nonlinear fiber (HNLF). The tunable and switchable operations were achieved by nonlinear polarization rotation (NPR) technique. Through appropriately controlling the filtering effect induced by NPR, the laser could operate at two kinds of tunable regimes. One is that the spacing between these two wavebands could be tuned while keeping their center at 1559 nm. The other is that the central position of the entire dual-waveband is tunable while with the same separation between these two wavebands of 13.2 nm. Moreover, the laser could switch between these two wavebands. Correspondingly, the center of the single-waveband has a tuning range of 15.2 nm. This versatile ultrafast fiber laser may find applications in fields of optical frequency combs, high speed optical communications, where HRR pulses are necessary.

General description and understanding of the nonlinear dynamics of mode-locked fiber lasers

As a type of nonlinear system with complexity, mode-locked fiber lasers are known for their complex behaviour. It is a challenging task to understand the fundamental physics behind such complex behaviour, and a unified description for the nonlinear behaviour and the systematic and quantitative analysis of the underlying mechanisms of these lasers have not been developed. Here, we present a complexity science-based theoretical framework for understanding the behaviour of mode-locked fiber lasers by going beyond reductionism. This hierarchically structured framework provides a model with variable dimensionality, resulting in a simple view that can be used to systematically describe complex states. Moreover, research into the attractors’ basins reveals the origin of stochasticity, hysteresis and multistability in these systems and presents a new method for quantitative analysis of these nonlinear phenomena. These findings pave the way for dynamics analysis and system designs of mode-locked fiber lasers. We expect that this paradigm will also enable potential applications in diverse research fields related to complex nonlinear phenomena.

CNT-based saturable absorbers with scalable modulation depth for Thulium-doped fiber lasers operating at 1.9 μm

In this work, we demonstrate a comprehensive study on the nonlinear parameters of carbon nanotube (CNT) saturable absorbers (SA) as a function of the nanotube film thickness. We have fabricated a set of four saturable absorbers with different CNT thickness, ranging from 50 to 200 nm. The CNTs were fabricated via a vacuum filtration technique and deposited on fiber connector end facets. Each SA was characterized in terms of nonlinear transmittance (i.e. optical modulation depth) and tested in a Thulium-doped fiber laser. We show, that increasing the thickness of the CNT layer significantly increases the modulation depth (up to 17.3% with 200 nm thick layer), which strongly influences the central wavelength of the laser, but moderately affects the pulse duration. It means, that choosing the SA with defined CNT thickness might be an efficient method for wavelength-tuning of the laser, without degrading the pulse duration. In our setup, the best performance in terms of bandwidth and pulse duration (8.5 nm and 501 fs, respectively) were obtained with 100 nm thick CNT layer. This is also, to our knowledge, the first demonstration of a fully polarization-maintaining mode-locked Tm-doped laser based on CNT saturable absorber.

Nonlinear Saturable and Polarization-induced Absorption of Rhenium Disulfide

Monolayer of transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs), with lamellar structure as that of graphene, has attracted significant attentions in optoelectronics and photonics. Here, we focus on the optical absorption response of a new member TMDs, rhenium disulphide (ReS₂) whose monolayer and bulk forms have the nearly identical band structures. The nonlinear saturable and polarization-induced absorption of ReS₂ are investigated at near-infrared communication band beyond its bandgap. It is found that the ReS₂-covered D-shaped fiber (RDF) displays the remarkable polarization-induced absorption, which indicates the different responses for transverse electric (TE) and transverse magnetic (TM) polarizations relative to ReS₂ plane. Nonlinear saturable absorption of RDF exhibits the similar saturable fluence of several tens of μJ/cm² and modulation depth of about 1% for ultrafast pulses with two orthogonal polarizations. RDF is utilized as a saturable absorber to achieve self-started mode-locking operation in an Er-doped fiber laser. The results broaden the operation wavelength of ReS₂ from visible light to around 1550 nm, and numerous applications may benefit from the anisotropic and nonlinear absorption characteristics of ReS₂, such as in-line optical polarizers, high-power pulsed lasers, and optical communication system.

Electrically Tunable Nd:YAG waveguide laser based on Graphene

We demonstrate a tunable hybrid Graphene-Nd:YAG cladding waveguide laser exploiting the electro-optic and the Joule heating effects of Graphene. A cladding Nd:YAG waveguide was fabricated by the ion irradiation. The multi-layer graphene were transferred onto the waveguide surface as the saturable absorber to get the Q-switched pulsed laser oscillation in the waveguide. Composing with appropriate electrodes, graphene based capacitance and heater were formed on the surface of the Nd:YAG waveguide. Through electrical control of graphene, the state of the hybrid waveguide laser was turned on or off. And the laser operation of the hybrid waveguide was electrically tuned between the continuous wave laser and the nanosecond pulsed laser.
