Abstract
Regardless of the sustainable development path, today, there are highly demanded chemical productions still operating that bear environmental and technological risks inherited from the previous century. The fabrication of nitro compounds, and nitroarenes in particular, is traditionally associated with acidic wastes formed in nitration reactions exploiting mixed acids. However, nitroarenes are indispensable for industrial and military applications. We faced the challenge and developed a greener, safer, and yet effective method for the production of nitroaromatics. The proposed approach comprises the application of an eco-friendly nitrating agent, namely dinitrogen pentoxide (DNP), in the medium of liquefied 1,1,1,2-tetrafluoroethane (TFE) – one of the most non-hazardous Freons. Importantly, the used TFE is not emitted into the atmosphere but is effortlessly recondensed and returned into the process. DNP is obtained via the oxidation of dinitrogen tetroxide with ozone. The elaborated method is characterized by high yields of the targeted nitro arenes, mild reaction conditions, and minimal amount of easy-to-utilize wastes. A green, safe, and economical method for the production of nitroaromatics is developed. The method comprises the use of the eco-friendly nitrating agent, dinitrogen pentoxide, and liquefied 1,1,1,2-tetrafluoroethane as the reusable reaction medium.![]()

Abstract
Predominant ortho-selective mononitration of low-melting and liquid phenols and hydroxycoumarins in moderate to high yields has been accomplished upon grinding with solid cerium (IV) ammonium nitrate (CAN). Microwave-assisted expeditious CAN-mediated nitration of relatively high melting phenols and hydroxycoumarins with high efficiency and selectively under solvent-free conditions has been also developed to address the problems of sluggishness and low yield for these reluctant substrates.

Abstract
This report describes an efficient nitrating system for the nitration of arenes at room temperature by using an equivalent of nitric acid in HFIP (1,1,1,3,3,3-hexafluoroisopropanol). The π-complex intermediate of an arene with a nitronium ion stabilized by HFIP can be directly observed by UV-vis spectra and is supported by theoretical calculations.

Abstract
An efficient sonochemical protocol for the nitration of aromatic compounds was described in the presence of a catalytic amount of sulfuric acid-functionalized silica-based core/shell magnetic nanocomposite at room temperature in an eco-friendly and recyclable media, deep eutectic solvent (DES), based on choline chloride and urea. The particle size, morphology and elemental analysis of the core/shell nanocatalyst were carried out by TEM, SEM, EDX and XRD analyses. The nanocatalyst and DES were easily recovered from the reaction mixture quantitatively and reused several times.

Abstract
Nitration with nitric acid and acetic anhydride via acetyl nitrate as nitrating species is efficient with the substrate m-xylene as solvent. Zeolite Hβ with an SiO2/Al2O3 ratio of 500 was found to be the most active of the catalysts tried both in yield and regioselectivity in the nitration of m-xylene. The molecular volume of the reactants was calculated with the Gaussian 09 program at the B3LYP/6–311+G(2d, p) level and compared with the size of the zeolite Hβ channels. A range of other substrates were subjected to the nitrating system under the same conditions as those optimized for m-xylene and excellent selectivity was obtained.

Abstract
Phenols are selectively nitrated to o-nitrophenol along with rate enhancement using dilute nitric acid (6 wt%)/tetra butyl ammonium bromide (TBAB) under sonication. The selectivity can also be reversed to p-nitrophenol using NaBr as a catalyst. Kinetic analysis of nitration of phenol both with and without sonication has been investigated by variation of reaction parameters such as catalyst, nitric acid and substrate concentration.
