Metal and metalloid elements have various possible isotopic compositions and oxidation states and often form coordination or covalent compounds with inorganic and organic small molecules or biological macromolecules, resulting in complex elemental speciation. Different species of the same element often have different properties, which dictate their behavior. Thus, elemental speciation analysis is vital for comprehensively and accurately assessing an element's environmental and biological effects and the corresponding risks. Because elemental speciation determines the behavior of an element in different environmental and biological processes, the analysis of elemental species has, in recent years, been important in various subjects, including analytical chemistry, environmental chemistry, geochemistry, ecology, agronomy, and biomedicine. The complexity of environmental and biological sample matrices, as well as the multiformity, low levels, and lability of chemical forms pose severe challenges in elemental speciation analysis. Therefore, the highly selective identification and efficient separation of native species is necessary for conducting the identification, quantification, ecotoxicity evaluation, and physiological function study of elemental speciation. Sample pretreatment by solid-phase extraction is an effective solution to the aforementioned problems, but the existing methods do not meet the requirements of current research. The transition of the target species from pre-processing to the detection device includes both on- and off-line arrangements. Compared with the on-line approach, the off-line approach requires more manual participation, increasing the analysis workload. However, the off-line approach can improve the analysis efficiency through high-throughput pretreatment when large batches of samples are encountered, meaning the off-line approach is still an effective model. Ion imprinting technology has been developed based on existing molecular imprinting technology, with four main steps present in the synthesis of ion imprinted polymers. First, ion imprinting technology uses metal ions as templates. Then, these templates are combined with the functional monomers through coordination, electrostatic or hydrogen bonding. The functional monomers simultaneously surround and fix the templates, after which the cross-linkers and functional monomers polymerize to prepare ion-imprinted polymers with a specific structure and composition. Finally, the imprinted holes are created in the polymers by eluting the template ions. Therefore, the template molecules, functional monomers, and cross-linkers are three precursors necessary for synthesizing ion-imprinted polymers. These polymers can specifically bind to the imprinted metal ions with accuracy, sensitivity, and reliability. In recent years, they have been widely used in separating, enriching, analyzing, and detecting elemental species. During solid-phase extraction, the non-magnetic adsorbent materials dispersed in the sample solution need to be separated by centrifugation or filtration, which is time-consuming and laborious. Because an external magnetic field can be used for rapid magnetic solid-phase extraction, it has become a potential method for separating and enriching elemental species. This review systematically summarizes the latest progress in ion-imprinting technology, including its principle and the preparation methods of ion-imprinted polymers. The challenges faced by ion imprinting technology are analyzed in the context of the development of ion-imprinting magnetic solid-phase extraction in elemental speciation analysis. Finally, the direction of future development and the strategies of ion imprinting technology in elemental speciation analysis are proposed. It is important to exploit novel organic-inorganic hybrid polymerization-based multifunctional ion-imprinted magnetic nanocomposites for the magnetic solid-phase extraction and separation of elemental species. By establishing the pretreatment protocols with high recognition selectivity, strong separation ability, large adsorption capacity, and good speciation stability, we expect to achieve the research objectives of simultaneously separating and enriching the multiple-species of typical metal/metalloid elements in environmental and biological samples.

Surface Plasmon Resonance-Based Fiber Optic Sensors Utilizing Molecular Imprinting

Molecular imprinting is earning worldwide attention from researchers in the field of sensing and diagnostic applications, due to its properties of inevitable specific affinity for the template molecule. The fabrication of complementary template imprints allows this technique to achieve high selectivity for the analyte to be sensed. Sensors incorporating this technique along with surface plasmon or localized surface plasmon resonance (SPR/LSPR) provide highly sensitive real time detection with quick response times. Unfolding these techniques with optical fiber provide the additional advantages of miniaturized probes with ease of handling, online monitoring and remote sensing. In this review a summary of optical fiber sensors using the combined approaches of molecularly imprinted polymer (MIP) and the SPR/LSPR technique is discussed. An overview of the fundamentals of SPR/LSPR implementation on optical fiber is provided. The review also covers the molecular imprinting technology (MIT) with its elementary study, synthesis procedures and its applications for chemical and biological anlayte detection with different sensing methods. In conclusion, we explore the advantages, challenges and the future perspectives of developing highly sensitive and selective methods for the detection of analytes utilizing MIT with the SPR/LSPR phenomenon on optical fiber platforms.

Molecular imprinting science and technology: a survey of the literature for the years 2004-2011

Herein, we present a survey of the literature covering the development of molecular imprinting science and technology over the years 2004-2011. In total, 3779 references to the original papers, reviews, edited volumes and monographs from this period are included, along with recently identified uncited materials from prior to 2004, which were omitted in the first instalment of this series covering the years 1930-2003. In the presentation of the assembled references, a section presenting reviews and monographs covering the area is followed by sections describing fundamental aspects of molecular imprinting including the development of novel polymer formats. Thereafter, literature describing efforts to apply these polymeric materials to a range of application areas is presented. Current trends and areas of rapid development are discussed.

Molecular imprinted polymers as synthetic receptors for the analysis of myco- and phyco-toxins

Continuous exposure to low doses of myco- and phyco-toxins poses severe risks to human health. Contemporary analytical methods have the sensitivity required for contamination detection and quantification, but direct application of these methods on real samples can be rarely performed because of matrix complexity. Thus, selective analytical methods, relying on intelligent functional materials are needed. Recent years have seen the increasing use of molecular imprinted polymers in contaminant analysis because these materials seem to be particularly suitable for applications where analyte selectivity is essential. In this review, several applications of molecular imprinted polymers in myco- and phyco-toxin contamination analysis will be discussed.

Current perspectives in analyte extraction strategies for tin and arsenic speciation

Nowadays, reliable and robust detectors can be considered standard laboratory instrumentation, which, for most of the elements provide quantitation limits in the lower ng/g range. Despite these advances in detector technology, sample preparation is by far the most important error source in modern analytical method development and can be judged as the "Achilles' heel" of any analytical process regarding reliability of the obtained results and time consumption. The aim of the present review is to highlight modern trends for tin and arsenic speciation, as these analytes can be considered as models for challenges in modern method development in this field. First background information, legislative aspects and current needs are elucidated. Then the role of sample treatment within the process of method development in speciation is discussed, followed by a presentation of modern extraction techniques, matching the requirements for arsenic and tin speciation analysis: to provide mild conditions in order to ensure species preservation, to improve species recovery, to enhance sample throughput and to be suitable for hyphenation with chromatographic separation systems. The review includes applications on tin and arsenic speciation, covering the period of 2001-2006.

Solid phase extraction of food contaminants using molecular imprinted polymers

Food contamination from natural or anthropogenic sources poses severe risks to human health. It is now largely accepted that continuous exposure to low doses of toxic chemicals can be related to several chronic diseases, including some type of cancer and serious hormonal dysfunctions. Contemporary analytical methods have the sensitivity required for contamination detection and quantification, but direct application of these methods on food samples can be rarely performed. In fact, the matrix introduces severe disturbances, and analysis can be performed only after some clean-up and preconcentration steps. Current sample pre-treatment methods, mostly based on the solid phase extraction technique, are very fast and inexpensive but show a lack of selectivity, while methods based on immunoaffinity extraction are very selective but expensive and not suitable for harsh environments. Thus, inexpensive, rapid and selective clean-up methods, relaying on "intelligent" materials are needed. Recent years have seen a significant increase of the "molecularly imprinted solid phase extraction" (MISPE) technique in the food contaminant analysis. In fact, this technique seems to be particularly suitable for extractive applications where analyte selectivity in the presence of very complex and structured matrices represents the main problem. In this review, several applications of MISPE in food contamination analysis will be discussed, with particular emphasis on the extraction of pesticides, drugs residua, mycotoxins and environmental contaminants.

Application of molecularly imprinted polymers to solid-phase extraction of analytes from real samples

A review is presented of recent developments in the use of molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs) as selective materials for solid-phase extraction. Compared with traditional sorbents, MIPs can not only concentrate but also selectively separate the target analytes from real samples, which is crucial for the quantitatively determination of analytes in complex samples. Consequently, as one of the most effective sorbents, MIPs have been successfully applied to the pretreatment of analytes in foods, drugs, and biological and environmental samples in the past five years.

Focused ultrasound and molecularly imprinted polymers: A new approach to organotin analysis in environmental samples

There is a high interest in speciation of organotin compounds (OTCs) in biota and marine sediment samples, due to their influence in the transmission of the contamination in the trophic chain. Sample treatment is still the most "compromising" step of speciation analysis. Extraction methods are in general time-consuming due to long extraction times and several analytical steps involved. In addition, in most cases there are problems of low recovery, especially for MBT. These drawbacks, added to the high matrix effects generally present in biota samples, make the sample treatment for organotin analysis a serious challenge for environmental issues. Here we present a novel, fast and efficient two steps method for organotin speciation in mussel and oyster tissue as well as in marine sediments. The first step based on the use of ultrasonic probe extraction for species leaching allowed us to quantitatively extract these compounds in a few minutes. Matrix interferences drastically decreased by applying a clean-up step based on the use of an imprinted polymer especially designed for tributyltin (TBT). This procedure increased accuracy and precision of the GC-FPD analysis and improving the limit of detection, Besides, this new method prevents the use of standard addition calibration method, which is mandatory without the clean-up step. The optimization and validation has been performed by using three reference materials: mussel tissue CRM-477, oyster candidate T-38 and sediment PACS-2.
